Shane David Good, 46, of Lomax, IL passed away Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

Born on November 27, 1970, in Burlington, IA, Shane was the son of Ronald and Elaine Smith Good.

Shane had worked as a truck driver for Raiders Pre Cast Concrete, IPC and Fed Ex Freight. He enjoyed working on motors, watching NASCAR and listening to music. He also loved family events, cookouts, and especially taco in a bag night with his daughters.

Survivors include two daughters, Hannah Renee Good and Caitlin Brooke Good both of Stronghurst, IL, his father, Ronald Good of Lomax, and two sisters, Tammy Good and Sherry Good both of Stronghurst.

Shane was preceded in death by his mother and one son, Joshua Good.

A visitation will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, IL. A private family burial will be held in the Carman Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to help with funeral expenses. Daniel Nicolas West, 63, of West Burlington, died at 9:20 PM Saturday, September 2, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born July 10, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Thomas Frank and Doris Ann Gevock West. On June 22, 1985, he married Brenda Lee Siegel in Burlington.

Daniel worked in oil sales for the Reif family Valley Distribution.

He was a 1972 graduate of Burlington High School

He recently attended Harmony Bible Church in Burlington. He was a member of West Burlington Christian Church, where he was very active in Sunday School and summer camps for kids. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579, he served on the West Burlington City Council from 2009 until 2013, served on the board of the library and was very active in the West Burlington 4th of July celebration. He was an avid World Champion Chicago Cubs fan and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed playing on a pool league.

Survivors include his wife Brenda; three sons, Alec Robert West of Burlington, Nicolas Thomas West of West Burlington, and Baron Daniel West of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Summer Janine (Joss) Teed of Ottumwa, IA; his parents, Thomas Frank and Doris Ann West of Wickenberg, AZ; two brothers, Kenton “Ken” (Stacey) West of West Pagosa Springs, CO, and William (Teresa) West of West Albuquerque, NM; three sisters, Kathy (Earl) Vineyard of Albuquerque, NM, Barbara (Randy) Johnston of Dayton, OH, and Jenni (Bob) Gibbs of Glendale, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. West will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 9, 2017, at Harmony Bible Church, Burlington Campus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Wounded Warriors and Great River Hospice.

Dr. James J. Kivlahan, 85, of Burlington, died at 7:25 AM Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born September 30, 1931, in Highland Park, MI, he was the son of Henry Damien and Margaret H. Kivlahan. On October 27, 1962, he married Lorena Louise Hillebrand at St. Norberts Church in Inkster, MI.

Jim was a Board Certified Medical Doctor with specialties of a Surgeon and General Practitioner for 51 1/2 years. He installed the first pace maker in Burlington in 1964 with Dr. Robert Todd. He made house calls until he was 84. He retired in 2015. He was also the past medical director of Des Moines County Health Department, Des Moines County Jail, and A.D.D.S. He was also the Psych Director for Burlington Medical Center and was the former medical director for Case Co., PPG, G.E., Champion, and Georgia Pacific.

Jim loved working at Great River. He was a team believer-everyone from laundry thru administration worked for the good of the patient. He especially loved the nursing staff, they were his eyes and ears to his patients. Their knowledge and assessments made his job so much easier, and he valued their judgments and input. He said, “who better knows the patient than the caregivers who are with them all day.” He told me, his wife, he was thankful for them every day.

Jim loved practicing medicine and felt privileged and honored to be of service to the people of Burlington and surrounding communities.

He was a 1949 graduate of Farley High School. He graduated from Loras College in 1953 and the University of Iowa Medical School in 1957. He was a medical intern at Wayne County Hospital in Wayne, MI from 1957 to 1958. He served in Korea as a Captain in the Medical Corp from 1958 until 1960. He did his general Surgeon Residency at Wayne County Hospital from 1960 until 1964 and then moved to Burlington in 1964.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Southeastern Iowa Round Table Civil War Group as one of the founding members and a former member of the Burlington Golf Club. He enjoyed traveling, golf, reading biographies and Civil War reenactment.

Survivors include his wife, Lorena; five daughters, Lori “Laura” Kivlahan of Fort Madison, Margaret (Tom) Herman of La Habra, CA, Jane (Joe) Best of Eden Prairie, MN, Kathy (David) Suarez of Burlington, and Annie (Marcus) Powell of New London; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Alice (Robert) Stenander of Galesburg, IL, Joanne (Richard) Boudreau of Lacrosse, WI, and Sister Mary Kivlahan, O.S.F. of Dubuque; one brother, Henry (Patricia) Kivlahan, Jr. of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, John Francis Kivlahan.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 P.M. with the family to receive friends 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Dr. Kivlahan will be 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 8, 2017, at Divine Mercy Parish — St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Bill Roush as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Prugh~Thielen community room following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, Great River Hospice House, Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County and Hope Haven.

Loren Dale Ratekin, 84, of Burlington, died at 5:00 AM Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born January 7, 1933 in Council Bluffs, IA, he was the son of Harry and Dorothy Grason Ratekin. On June 29, 1955, he married Betty Jean Droe in Fort Belvoir, VA.

Loren taught history and business and also was Assistant Principal at Burlington High School.

He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, IA in 1950. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Parsons College in Fairfield, IA and received his Masters of Arts degree in Education Administration from the University of Iowa.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956.

Loren was active in the Player’s Workshop and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, where he had served as treasurer as well as in many other capacities. He served on the Burlington Zoning Board and was a member of the board of directors of the Burlington area Planned Parenthood. For several years he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in locations across the country. Loren enjoyed golf, tennis, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Tom Ratekin of New York; two daughters, Diane Ratekin of Oak Park, IL and Susan Ratekin Krogmeier of Scottsdale, AZ; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one on the way; four brothers, Earl Ratekin of Council Bluffs, Jim Ratekin of Paradise, CA, Ned Ratekin of Cedar Falls,
IA, and Dan Ratekin of West Des Moines, IA and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Ratekin will be 10:00 AM Thursday, September 7, 2017, at Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship with Rich Johnson officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service.

A memorial has been established for Habitat for Humanity.

Mariann C. Grothe, 84, of Burlington, died at 4:53 PM Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born December 8, 1932, in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Anthony W. Chubb and Marcella F. Boyle Chubb. On August 30, 1958, she married Mark Joseph Grothe in Washington, Iowa.

She worked for over 32 years as an administrative clerk for Northwestern Bell-US West-Qwest Telephone Co., retiring February 25, 1982.

She graduated in 1950 from Burlington High School.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish- SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s Guild, Altar & Rosary , St. Agatha Circle, Telephone Pioneers and Epsilon Sigma Alpha. She was very dedicated to her faith and loved praying the rosary. Mariann loved to dance and smile, and she had great style and taste. Mariann liked to play the slots, play cards and enjoyed scrap booking. She was a loving, kind, caring mother and grandmother, who devoted her life to her family, and to her mother.

Survivors include husband, Mark Joseph Grothe of Burlington; four daughters, Annmarie (Kirk) Daily of Ottumwa, Lisa Jo (Mike) Walter of Burlington, Gina Kay (Michael Frost, fiance) Grothe of Des Moines, and Angela (Trevor) Wiemann of Burlington; five grandchildren, Brendan (Emma) Daily, Connor Daily, Audrey Walter, Cooper Wiemann, and Bailey Wiemann; one sister, Nancy (Joel) Miller of Milton, FL; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Mark and Raymond Chubb.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Tuesday September 5, 2017 with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Grothe will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. A luncheon will be held in St. Paul’s cafeteria following the Mass. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for St. Vincent de Paul and Great River Hospice.
