Karl E. Jennings, Sr., age 77 of Morning Sun, died Thursday November 23, 2017 at his home in Morning Sun. The son of Fredrick Ellsworth Jennings and T. Juanita (Mehaffy) Freeman, he was born June 2, 1940 in Wapello. On November 5, 1977 he married Juanita C. (Heater) Allen; she died April 12, 2012. Karl worked as an inspector for J.I. Case in Burlington before his retirement. He attended the New London Christian Church. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, fishing, playing bingo, cooking and watching the Food Network. Karl didn’t know a stranger.
Survivors include: three children, Karl E and Christine Jennings, Jr. of Burlington; Susan N. and John Garrels of Fort Madison; Leo F.and Anh Jennings of Cedar Rapids; three stepdaughters, Dawn Allen of Muscatine; Dalene and Mike Whitney of Huxley; Dana and Ernie Kitchen of Davenport; 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; four siblings, Fredrick, Donald, and Margaret Jennings and Ruth Kibling; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister Carolyn Jackson.
The family will greet friends Tuesday November 28, 2017 from 9:30 -10:15 a.m. at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun. A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun, with Rev Rod Cooper officiating. A memorial has been established for the New London Christian Church Youth Group.
Dorothy Mae Sheets, 94, of Carthage, IL passed away at 5:10 PM Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at the Montebello Health Care Center in Hamilton, IL. Born June 6, 1923 near LaCrosse, IL, Dorothy was the daughter of Ellis and Ethel Schroeder Sheets.
Dorothy worked as a home economics teacher. She had worked at the Colchester, Terre Haute and Carthage schools; retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Hancock County and Illinois Chapters of the Retired Teacher Association and had worked in the state office for two years.
Dorothy was engaged in various activities at the Carthage Library, Memorial Hospital Gift Shop. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Carthage.
Survivors include one niece: Dorothy (John) Chaplin of Keokuk, IA, Two nephews: Clinton (Melody) Reed of Washington, IL, Lee (Lynn) Reed of Driftwood, TX, and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Elizabeth Reed and Viola Ruth Reed.
A private graveside service will be held Monday, November 27, 2017 at the LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, IL. A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church of Carthage. Harry W. Tate, 75, of Dallas City, IL, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, IL. He was surrounded by his family.
Harry was born August 12, 1942, at the La Harpe Hospital, La Harpe, IL to Romane J. Tate and Lois J. (Holford) Tate. He married Mae Dell Blythe at the Elliot Lunning Chapel, in Burlington, IA, on November 21, 1961.
Harry graduated from Dallas City High School in 1960. After High School, he was employed by IAAP; Chevron Chemical Co; First Miss Inc; Agrico Chemical; and American Ordnance where he was a Utilities Manager.
During his lifetime, Harry enjoyed serving his community. He was elected to the Dallas City School Board, where he served as president for 4 years; served as Head Elder and Deacon of the Grace Bible Church of Dallas City, IL, where he was a life long member, where he had the privilege of baptizing three of his grandsons; served on the Dallas City Water Corporation Board for over six years; and was an original Board member that started the Stepping Stone Preschool, Dallas City, IL.
In Harry’s earlier years he played fast pitch softball, where he had the privilege of pitching against The King and His Court! He enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing and pontooning on the Mississippi River. He loved to take trips with his wife on his Goldwing Honda and continued to be a great bowler throughout his lifetime. He had a strong sense of ethics and love for his family, God, and country.
Harry was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Romane and Lois Tate, and two sisters, Sara Sue Tate, and Mary Ann Smith.
Harry is survived by his wife, Mae Dell Tate of Dallas City; three daughters: Lindy (Mike) Alsbrook of Dallas City, IL; Cindy (Robbie) Leake; also of Dallas City, Melody (Bob) Meyer of Colusa, IL; Two brothers: Otho (Pam) Tate of Dallas City, IL, and Frank (Eileen) Tate of Gladstone, IL, and one sister: Diana (Tom) Doran of Carman, IL. Eight grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 10:00 at the Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, IL, with the Rev. Larry Van Gundy officiating. Burial will be at Terre Haute, IL Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00PM Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. Michael Dean ‘Mike’ Parish, age 61, of Wapello, died Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Dean and Gladys McElhinney Parish, he was born on March 9, 1956 in Burlington.
Mike graduated from Wapello High School in 1975. He married Terri Walker and they later divorced. He worked at Mid American Power Plant with the IBEW 109 Union for 38 years. He served with the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department since 1977 for 17 years. He was a member of the Southeastern Iowa Car Club.
His family includes his mother, Gladys Parish of Wapello; two daughters, Amber & Mike Spiker of Wapello and Kelli Parish & Sam Adams of Garrison, North Dakota; a son, Aaron Parish & Delainey McCulley of Cairo in rural Columbus Junction; four grandchildren, Jesse Parish, Blake Adams, Addely
nn Spiker, and Shelby Adams; and three step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Dean; and brother, Donald.
The graveside service for Mike Parish will be held at 2:30 PM on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at the Wapello Cemetery with Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating. The family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.
