Obituaries Tuesday December 12th

Todd Allan Cosby, 35, of Donnellson, formerly of New London, died Sunday, December 10, 2017. Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Charlie Shirkey, 68, formerly of Middletown, died at 11:48 PM Sunday, December 10, 2017, at his home in Mt. Pleasant.

Born November 14, 1949, in Fairfield, IA, he was the son of Wilbur George and Florence June Hill Shirkey. On May 10, 1975, he married Susan Lea Butler in Burlington, IA. They later divorced.

Charlie was a tool and die maker at General Electric, Huffman, Murry Iron, Hawkeye Group, and Precision Steel. He was the owner and operator of Middletown Tool & Die, and Quality Repair for many years.

He was a 1968 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. He attended Southeastern Community College.

Charlie loved circle track racing. He went to Knoxville Nationals for many years. He enjoyed hunting,fishing and mushroom hunting. Helping others was charlie’s passion.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Wesely of Mt. Pleasant; life partner, Candas Carlene Pilkington of Mount Pleasant; two sons, Joshua Charles (Lois) Shirkey of Middletown, and Gabriel Francis Shirkey of Middletown; one grandson, Jason John Shirkey of Mount Pleasant; one brother, Mark (Janet) Wesely of Danville; three sisters, Sandra Allender, Nancy Weigert, and Amy (Todd) Mabeus all of Mount Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, and one brother, his step-father, Merlin “Mike” Wesely who was a care-giver and father figure.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The memorial service for Charlie will be 6:00 PM Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Ned Fry officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established in memory of Charlie Shirkey.

Carolyn Joann Ditzman, 70, of Burlington, died Sunday, December 10th at her home surrounded by family. A Celebration of Life and Fellowship will be 2:00 Saturday, December 16th at Burlington Baptist Church with Pastor Kendall Adams officiating. According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and inurnment will be at a later date at Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the AWANA program at the church. Nicholas T. Beelman, 51, Mt. Union, died Saturday, December 9th at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday at Elliott Chapel, New London, with Pastor Matt Yaley officiating. Friends may call from 9 AM until the time of the service. Burial will immediately follow. A memorial has been established.

Norma Jean Johns, 82, of Burlington, died at 6:10 AM Sunday, December 10, 2017, at her home.

Born October 20, 1935, in Mediapolis, she was the daughter of Clarence Joseph and Ruth Dorothea Ingrahm Gerling. On August 24, 1957, she married Norman “Bunt” J. Johns in Burlington. He died July 16, 2001.

She worked 34 years for the Burlington Community School System.

She was a member of First United Church of Christ. She liked Westerns, country music, and romance novels. She was an animal lover, especially cats and dogs. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

Survivors include five sons, Neil Johns of Burlington, Shawn (Carol) Johns of Sydney, NE, Timothy Johns, Kenneth Johns, Dale (Kelly) Johns all of Burlington; two daughters, Dawn (John) Graham, Julie (Kevin) Knotts both of Burlington; 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Duane (Robin) Gerling, Loran (Kathy) Gerling, Harold (Linda) Gerling, Gerald Gerling all of Burlington, one sister, Marjorie (Steve) Hayden of Burlington.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Richard, Keith, and Sidney, and three sisters, Georgia, Virginia and Lois.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, December 15, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Johns will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service. Burial will be in at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
