Gwendolyn Alyce Smith, 88, of Burlington, died at 2:45 AM Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.
Born November 8, 1929, in Libertyville, IA, she was the daughter of Cloyce Virgil and Sarah Verle McCleary Hyde. On September 9, 1947, she married James Price Smith in Memphis, MO. He later passed on March 13, 1995.
She was a homemaker and also worked for J.C. Penney Company.
She graduated in 1947 from Fairfield High School.
She was of Christian faith. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She enjoyed being a Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma. She especially enjoyed baking pies, animals, playing pinochle and traveling.
Survivors include one son, J. K. (Eileen) Smith of Burlington; two daughters, Karla Kellen of Burlington and Karen Cross of West Burlington; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sandra McGhee of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.
Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Evelyn Jean McDowell
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.
A Memorial Visitation for Gwendolyn will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with prayers to end at 7:00 PM on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
Memorials have been established for the Local Alzheimer’s Association and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Betty Garrett, 67, of Burlington, died at 1:06 AM Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in Burlington.
Born February 23, 1951, in Birmingham, AL, she was the daughter of John Edward and Louella Beard Garrett.
Betty was a homemaker. She also worked out of the home at Brent Enterprises for 17 years as a bookkeeper and in maintenance. She also worked at CDAC as a caregiver for the State of Iowa for 12 years.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking, crafts and spending time with her family.
Survivors include three sons, Danny Nelan of Shreveport, LA, Edward Ora Nelan of McAllen, TX, and Tim Gould of Rock Island, IL; two daughters, Shannon Leffler of Burlington and Leslie (Luke) Blunk of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph (Judy) Garrett of Aledo, IL, Donnie (Julie) Garrett of Milan, IL, and Virgil (Carrie) Paul of Moline, IL; three sisters, Barb Beechamp of Bettendorf, Elizabeth (Larry) Martin of Alabama, and Pam Garrett of Chicago; along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Betty Boop will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne Ryan officiating. Cremation will be accorded following the service. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established in her name.
