Obituaries for Tuesday January 14th

Leona Mae Freyling, 84, of Burlington died Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born May 8, 1935 in Hillsboro, Illinois she was the daughter of Cecil Maynard and Julia Frances (Moore) Murphy. She married Charles Freyling on October 2, 1981 in Burlington. He died March 23, 2011.
Leona was a homemaker and a multi tasker. She was of the Lutheran faith. She enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. Leona was a huge advocate for recycling. She was very proud of returning to high school and earning her G.E.D. through Burlington High School in 1992.
She is survived by her two sons; Joe (Linda) Kauzlarich of Colona, Illinois and Shawn (Jackie Davidson) Lewis of Columbia, Missouri; one step-son Charles (Glena) Freyling Jr. of Burlington; numerous grandchildren; and two sisters Barbara Stole and Myrna Clark both of Decatur, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one son, one step-son, one step-daughter and one brother.
The graveside funeral service and interment for Mrs. Freyling will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18th at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
The family would like to give special thanks to Great River Medical Center, especially Dr. Sow and the Great River Hospice House nursing staff for the exceptional care they provided to Lee.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Great River Hospice, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the American Heart Association in her memory. Lunning Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Gail Ellen West, 71, formerly of Mt.Pleasant and Clarion, died Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Klein Center, West Burlington. She was born March 1, 1948 in Clarion to Orville Knolten and Ethel Clara Lurch West. On February 12, 1969, she married Bennett Leroy McCall in Mason City; they later divorced. Gail was a graduate of Clarion Community High School and University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where she also completed her Master’s Degree. She was of the Catholic faith.
Ms. West was a student advisor at Upper Iowa University and later Director of Career Development at Iowa Wesleyan College, and was also employed by Motorola. She enjoyed music and singing; tending her flowers, plants and garden; her cats; and feeding the birds.
Survivors include her children; Melissa Ann (Sven) Sinclair of Colombia, Maryland, Lorri Lee (Tim) Miller of Mt. Union, David Bennett (Debra) McCall of Plymouth, Indiana and Daniel Joseph (Casey) McCall of Savannah, Georgia; ten grandchildren; a brother, Benjamin Franklin West of Des Moines and a sister, Rosemary Dufficy of New York. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, David.
According to her wishes, her body will be cremated and there will be no formal services locally. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Clarion, Iowa. Elliott Chapel, New London is assisting the family. Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.
