Obituaries for Wednesday January 29th

Betty J. Leatherman, 90, of Burlington, died at 1:30 AM Friday, January 24, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born September 17, 1929, in Winston Salem, NC, she was the daughter of Calvin Lyman and Lexie Viola McCoy Roland. On October 25, 1947, she married Earnest Carl Leatherman in Franklin, NC. He passed April 30, 2012.

Betty was a homemaker.

She was a 1947 graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, NC.

Betty was a devout Baptist. She was very involved with her church as a deacon’s wife, serving as a Sunday School teacher and choir member. She was a talented seamstress as well as pianist. She was very involved with music from a young age and was part of “family band” singing alto. Betty was an excellent cook, her specialties were green bean casserole and her homemade yam dish. She also enjoyed baking and making her own candy.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda “Kara” (Dave) Steward of Burlington; granddaughter, Deborah (Shane) Morgan of Fountain Inn, SC; sister, Edwina Hall of Renton, WA; brother-in-law, Roger (Alice) Leatherman of London, KY; sister-in-law, Frankie Fagan of Battle Creek, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Services will be held at a later date in South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Lee Road Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina (1503 E. Lee Rd. Taylors, SC 29687).

Steven Eastin , 63, of Burlington, died at 10:49 AM Saturday, January 25, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 2, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of Dean Edmond and Clella C. Hamilton Eastin.

He was a 1974 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School.

Steven worked for the Typewriter Shop downtown, then B. Dalton’s bookstore and most recently as a custodian for the Burlington Community School District.

Steven enjoyed reading anything he could get his hands on. He was an “information hoarder” and knew almost as much as Google. He liked to play Words with Friends, take walks, go fishing and listen to Bruce Springsteen.

Survivors include his fiancee and partner of 20 years, Paula Robertson of Burlington; one son, Drew (Katie) Eastin of Burlington; one step-daughter, Kendra (Jason Davidson) Robertson of Burlington; one granddaughter, Aurora; four sisters, Sharon (Berkeley Brandt) Heintz of Ventura, CA, Sheryl Eastin of Iowa City, Sue (Jim) Engler of Coralville, and Sandra (Wilbur) Grinnell of Burlington; one brother, Gregory (Sue) Eastin of Burlington; former wife, Virginia Day of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, two brothers, Michael and Jeffrey and one sister-in-law, Toni Eastin.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Marie Elizabeth “Betty” Burrell, 101, of Burlington died Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born April 7, 1918 in Monmouth, Illinois she was the daughter of Sam and Marie (Nelson) Schaumleffel. She married Melvin L. Burrell on May 29, 1939 in Kahoka, Missouri. He died December 20, 1967.
Betty and her husband, Mel owned and operated Mel’s Jewelry Store for many years in downtown Burlington.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Betty was an animal lover and drew a lot of strength and comfort from having pets. She was an avid flower gardener, enjoyed having company in her home, and was always prepared for a tea party. She loved kids and being around them, especially her grandchildren and was an inspiration to her family and friends teaching everyone so much about life, love and faith. She left a legacy based on Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it.
Betty is survived by her three children; Sam (Alice) Burrell of Burlington, Leila (John) Link of La Harpe, Illinois and Cheryl (Stewart) Breuer of Burlington; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one great granddaughter Tabatha Breuer and one brother Lawrence Schaumleffel.
The funeral service for Betty Burrell will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 29th at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kathleen Wohlers will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society, Great River Hospice, Peace Lutheran Church and Union Church of La Harpe, Illinois in memory of Betty.

Rosemary L. Spindlow, 72, of Burlington, died at 4:54 PM Sunday, January 26, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 10, 1947, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William Grant and Betty Jean Hartman Steele. On April 18, 1991, she married Robert “Bob” Benton Spindlow in Burlington.

She graduated from Southeastern Community College in 1981.

Rosemary was a at home child-care provider. She also worked in security for Pinkerton Security and as a mail carrier at J.I. Case Company.

Rosemary enjoyed many hobbies. She liked to go dancing, bowling and do sewing projects such as cross stitch and crocheting. She also enjoyed gardening, playing BINGO, watching TV, adult coloring books and was an animal lover. Rosemary’s favorite way to spend time with her family, especially at family picnics and cookouts.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; four sons, Billy Joe Strode, Channeon Lee Strode, Marcus Darrel Sena, and Darrel “Jay” Lee Sena all of Burlington; one daughter, Vina Jo McCabe of Burlington; three step-daughters, Robin Handy of Rose Hill, IA, Tressa (Gary) Miller of Swedesburg, IA, and Cyndi Spindlow of Burlington; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother; one half-sister, Sharon McGriff of Burlington; several nieces and nephews; and one cousin, Judy Steele-Jones of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, William Grant Steele and Robert Wayne Steele, and two great-grandchildren, Kaylie Cooper and Aiden Brown.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Spindlow will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. A small gathering will be held at Robert and Rosemary’s home following the service.

A memorial has been established.

John Coe Latty, 81, of Burlington, died at 1:23 PM Saturday, January 25, 2020, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 21, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of John Penny and Helen Gregson Coe Latty. On March 19, 1961, he married Patricia Bischoff at Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington.

He graduated from Sperry High School in 1956 and attended Iowa State University.

John was a lifelong farmer and a proud 4th generation owner of his family’s century farm founded in 1834.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church. John loved farming and was passionate about the care of his family’s land. He was constantly working to improve the quality of the property through projects such as creating ponds, cutting brush and taking out fence rows.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Burlington; one son, John Paul (Linda) Latty of Burlington; one daughter, Julie (Greg) Letvin of Lockridge; four grandchildren, Emma and Johnna Latty, Michael Letvin & Jessica (Brandon) Daugherty; one great-grandchild, Kaden; one niece, Deborah Pintar and two nephews, Phillip and Matthew Thye.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Carolyn Stebbins and one niece, Lisa Wischmeier.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Per John’s wishes there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the First Congregational Church and the Des Moines County Historical Society for the maintenance and operation of the Hawkeye Log Cabin in Crapo Park.
