Obituaries for Tuesday February 18th

Johnny V. Smith, 54 of West Burlington, died Sunday, February 16, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born July 8, 1965 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Johnny Earl and Florence “Flo” (Grimmett) Smith.
Johnny enjoyed religious music and flowers. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include his mother Flo Smith of West Burlington; and two sisters, Stacy (Richard) Duffy of Burnside, IL and Rebecca “Becky” Smith of West Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his father, and one brother, Heath.
The funeral service for Johnny will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22nd at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington. Visitation will be one hour prior to service, where the family will receive friends.
Following the funeral service, cremation will be accorded and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Mr. Joseph C. Eberhardt, 90, of Sperry, died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2020 at his home.
Born December 9, 1929 in rural Oakville, IA, he was the son of Joseph W. and Emma R. (Mauer) Eberhardt. He married Ruby A. Miller August 22, 1954 in Oakville.
Joseph graduated in 1947 from Mediapolis High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifelong farmer, raising cattle was his passion.
He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church, Mediapolis, IA.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruby Eberhardt of Sperry; eight children, Fredrick (Kathy) Eberhardt of Quincy, IL, Curt Eberhardt of Mediapolis, Diane (Bob) Thompson of Sperry, Susan (Fred) Gerst of Burlington, Lisa (Rodney) Zippe, David (Karla) Eberhardt, Daniel (Tanessa) Eberhardt, and Brent (Karen) Eberhardt, all of Sperry; thirty six grandchildren; and thirty three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mr. Eberhardt will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 21st at the Apostolic Christian Church, Mediapolis, IA. Ministers of the church will officiate. Interment will be in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 20th at Lunning Chapel and 9:00-9:45 a.m. Friday at the church.
A memorial has been established for the Special Needs Foundation.

Zella Mae (Selleck) Poggemiller, 99, of Burlington died Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born October 31, 1920 in Ralls County, Missouri she was the daughter of Ben F. and Alice J. (Leake) Selleck.
She was a 1939 graduate of Center High School, Center, Missouri.
She married Floyd J. Poggemiller on April 24, 1945. He died March 14, 1989.
Zella worked for I.A.A.P. during WWII, General Electric, and was a supervisor for Winegard until her retirement in 1984.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and previous member of the Eagles Aerie #150, the Moose #529 Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She was witty and all who knew her knew she did not have any issues expressing her opinions.
Survivors include her two children, Don (Anita) Poggemiller and Mary Staub both of Burlington; four grandchildren, Shawn (Patty) Poggemiller, Bryan (Amy) Poggemiller, Devin (Trish) Staub and Heather (Brad) Lange and nine great grandchildren; Tom Poggemiller, Nick Poggemiller, Morgan Staub, Gracie Lange, Parker Lange, Gage Lange, Sawyer Staub, Megan Poggemiller and Cami Poggemiller.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Sam Selleck and her son-in-law John Staub.
The funeral service for Mrs. Poggemiller will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 22nd at Lunning Chapel. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and First Presbyterian Church.

Shirley A. Sours, 77, of Burlington died Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born July 13, 1942 in Mercer County, Missouri she was the daughter of George and Martha (Hamilton) Wolford. She married James Sours on September 7, 1962 and together they celebrated almost 58 years of marriage.
Shirley was a graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School. She worked for Sylvania and was a homemaker. She took care of many area foster children for many years and babysat her grandchildren.
She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.
Shirley enjoyed sewing and cooking for her family. She loved holiday times, attending sporting events for her grandchildren and watching the Hallmark channel. She was an avid Notre Dame and Iowa Hawkeye football fan.
Survivors include her husband James Sours of Burlington; three sons, Craig Sours and Jeff Sours both of Burlington and Travis (Bobbie) Sours of Middletown; several foster children; three grandchildren Taylor Sours, Trevor Sours and Tyler Sours all of Middletown and one sister Charlotte Langstaff of Davenport, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Clifford Wolford.
The funeral service for Mrs. Sours will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 20th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Father Mike Phillips will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at Lunning Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Louis William Stoecker, 72, of Burlington, died Sunday, February 16, 2020 at his home.
Born September 9, 1947 in Burlington, he was the son of Louis F. Stoecker and Viola Stoecker-Smith.
Louis worked in drafting at the American Ordinance Plant for 42 years.
He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, cooking and boating.
Survivors include two sons, Louis “Todd” (Darcy) Stoecker of New London, IA and Jason (Gayla) Stoecker of St. Louis, MO; five grandchildren, Nick, Grant, Gavin (Mallory), Madison and Garrett; and one sister, Phyllis (Rocky) Roxlau of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ellen Payne.
A private committal service will be held at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Melissa Mosley will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Children’s Burn Unit.

John Eugene Bragg, Jr., 65, of Burlington, died at 2:17 PM Saturday, February 15, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 24, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of John Eugene and Alice Irene Lennox Bragg. On July 1, 1995, he married Cindy Sue Bernhart in Burlington.

Over the years, John worked at Exide, IAAP and Hy-vee.

He was a graduate of Danville High School.

John loved music, reading, playing games with his kids, and weekly movie nights with his family. He was a collector of many things, but especially pop bottles, and maintained a collection of 2063 bottles over the course of his lifetime. John was an outdoorsman and enjoyed camping. He also liked to travel and take trips with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy of Burlington; five children, Sean (Mary) Bragg of Burlington, Brandi (John) Flynn of Georgia, Marcus Bragg of Burlington, Maranda (Curtis) Bernand of Burlington, and Tristan Bragg of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Clarise (Hunter) Hall, John, Noah, Mia, Vaelene, Kaiisyn, and Ramsey; one great-grandchild, Emma; and four siblings, Bill, Bert, Shawna and Tammy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents in law, and one brother, Rodney.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A Celebration of Life for John will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
