Sharon Kay Sutton, 83, of Dallas City, Illinois, passed away at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the Oakview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington, Iowa.
Sharon was born July 26, 1940 in Dallas City, the daughter of Don and Joan (Curtis) Hancock. On August 15, 1959 she married Ron Sutton.
Besides Ron survivors include one daughter: Kelly (Craig) Petersen of Burlington, Iowa; two grandchildren: Curt Petersen and Kayla (Brian) Danielson; three great-grandchildren: Peter, Edward and David Danielson; two half-sisters: Terry Poston and Jerri Hancock and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and brother-in-law: Darla and Jerry Newberry and one nephew: Michael Newberry.
Sharon was a 1958 graduate of Dallas City High School. She stayed at home while her daughter was young. She later worked for the United States Postal Service, where she retired from. She was an amazing seamstress, an avid reader and a lover of cats.
Cremation has been entrusted to Banks & Beals Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with interment to follow at Harris Cemetery.

Jule A. Bardy, 81, of Burlington, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.
Born September 11, 1942, in Superior, WI, she was the daughter of Joseph John and Ann Agnes Stralka Sitek. On September 23, 1972, she married the love of her life, David Charles Bardy in Superior, WI. The couple met when the railroads they were working for merged in 1970.
Jule worked at Burlington Northern Railroad for nine years, Kirlin’s Hallmark for nine years and at Target for nine years.
She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed knitting, playing cards, going to the casino and she dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, David Bardy of Burlington; son, Randy of Burnsville, MN; daughter, Wendy (Art) of North Liberty; three grandchildren, Christine, Eli and Evan; one great-granddaughter, Persephone; three brothers, Joseph (Mary) Sitek of Deluth, MN, Daniel (Cheryl) Sitek of Superior, WI and Conrad (Julie) Sitek of Roseville, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin sister, Mary Kay Maki.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Bardy will be 10:00 AM Monday, December 4, 2023, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the SS. Mary and Patrick Church Hall following the mass. Entombment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established for Divine Mercy Parish.

Alexander Earl Spiker, 48, of West Burlington, died Monday, November 27, 2023, at his home.
Born August 13, 1975, in Monmouth, IL, he was the son of John L and Connie S Whitmore Spiker. On October 7, 2017, he married Linda Liby in Stronghurst, IL.
Alex attended Oquawka Grade School, Tri Valley Middle School in Gladstone, IL and Union High School in Biggsville, IL. Southeastern Community College.
He worked for Raiders Pre Cast Concrete, Carl A. Nelson plant services and most recently for Huffman Welding and Fabrication out of Fort Madison, IA.
Alex enjoyed working on older cars and was always tinkering around in the garage. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed riding motorcycles, boats, 4 wheelers and pretty much anything with an engine. The true loves of his life were his son and grandson. Alex loved being a father and grandfather to them.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Spiker of West Burlington; son, Zachary J Spiker of Biggsville, IL; grandson, Ashton Bentley Spiker of Biggsville; IL father, John L (Connie S Spiker) Spiker of Oquawka, IL; brother, Richard D (Wendy) Spiker of Burlington; three sisters, Jessica L (Donavan) Vanskike of Monmouth, IL, Glenda L (Todd) Anderson of Burlington; Joann L (Keith) Hurt of Oquawka, IL; five nieces, Lillian Spiker, Alexandria Spiker, Scarlett Vanskike, Zoey Spiker, Courtenay (Drake) Huffman; two nephews, Jaxson Alexander Vanskike and Brody Ohland; aunt, Pat (Gary) Andrews; uncle, Gerald (Gayle) Whitmore; and two cousins, Tracy (Carl) Chandler of Oquawka, IL and Cory (Katy) Whitmore of Lake Story, IL.
He was preceded in death by his mother, sister, Rhonda Spiker, aunt, Brenda Whitmore, grandparents, Vilas and Sylvia Spiker, Richard Whitmore and Eveylyn (Whitmore) Siens and his best friend, Josh Danner.

John E. “Jack” Schmidt, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born February 26, 1928, in Ottumwa, IA, he was the son of Clarence and Grace Wren Schmidt. On September 26, 1950, he married Patricia Jeanne Hervey in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2012.
He attended St. Ambrose University.
He worked as a purchasing agent for the Kenmar Manufacturing Company in Ottumwa for seven years, then as an upholstery buyer for Chittenden & Eastman in Burlington. He was a salesman at MPI in Fort Worth, Texas for 25 years and most recently, a salesman at Furniture City in West Burlington.
He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving from 1946 until 1948. While enlisted, he played basketball on the official Marine team.
He was devoted to his Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He had a strong faith and said the rosary daily. Jack was devoted to his family and enjoyed attending family gatherings and spending time at their cabin on the backwaters of the river. He also liked to socialize with his friends at Joe’s Inn. He was a great storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a dedicated supporter of Burlington Notre Dame School and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He followed High School sports across the state and would often comment on which schools had strong teams each year. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Survivors include his son, Greg (Maureen) Schmidt of Leawood, KS; six daughters, Christine (Jim) Corkery of Bridgeton, MO, Janet Schmidt of Muscatine, Julie (Pat) Kelley, Carol (Larry) Lindhart, Lisa (Mike) Smith all of Burlington, Anne (Chris) Lansing of Davenport; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; two sisters, Sue Tharp of Sheboygan, WI, and Helen Clemens of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Msgr. Robert Schmidt and Phillip Schmidt.
Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Friday, December 1, 2023 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.
Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard following the visitation.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Schmidt will be 11:00 AM, Friday, December 1, 2023 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Burlington Notre Dame Schools and Birthright of Burlington.

Marvin “Roy” Lansing Jr, of Burlington, died Sunday, November 26, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospital after a 20-year battle with severe health conditions.
Born, June 3, 1965 in Centerville, Illinois, he was the son of Marvin Roy and Margaret (Schaefer) Lansing Sr. Roy was of the Catholic faith.
He graduated from Assumption High School in Washington Park, Illinois in 1983. He attended Belleville Area Community College after graduation. He worked for Crescent Electric Supply Company which moved him to Iowa in 1995 as the branch manager in Burlington. He also worked part-time for the Des Moines County Sheriff Department. He loved working in law enforcement.
On November 4, 1989 he married Betty (French) Lansing. They just celebrated 34 years of marriage.
Roy was an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan and Duke basketball fan. He enjoyed watching both on TV. His best moments were spent with his two boys and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Betty of 34 years; two sons Ryan James Lansing and Tyler Joseph (Allison) Lansing; one granddaughter Natalie Lansing; one grandson Brodie Lansing; one brother James (Jeanine) Lansing; two sisters-in-law Bonnie (Gary) Rohr and Barbara (Robert) Pfeiffer and many nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson Carter Joseph Lansing.
Per Roy’s wishes, no services will be held.

Thomas Terence Swan, 58, of Newton, died Thursday, November 23, 2023, at the Newton Health Care Center.
Born June 26, 1965, in Albia, IA, he was the son of Oscar O. Swan and Naoma Kirby Bristol. On September 28, 1985, he married Martha Fleagle and together they had two children. He later married Tracy Fanning in 2000 and they later divorced.
He was a devoted Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed playing darts, pool, singing karaoke, especially Elvis and KISS. He was also a fan of Junior Talley, an Elvis impersonator.
Survivors include his daughter, Nichole Gonzalez of Burlington; son, Aaron Swan of Farmington; grandchild, Grace; six siblings, Carol (Clifford) Kingery of Newton, Robert (Mary) Swan of San Antonio, TX, Geoffrey Swan of Helena, MT, Teresa (Larry) Buck of Burlington, Bradly Swan of Newton and William Bristol of Brownsville, TX; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Swan of Newton, and Gwen Swan of Rogers, AK; brother-in-law, Richards Closser of Floris and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Junior, Kenneth, David and Steven Swan; sister, Connie Closser and nephew, George “Joe” Marshall.

Jean M. McKinney, 93, of West Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born February 7, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Schroeder) Engelmeyer.
After graduating high school, she graduated from Quincy College in 1962, in Quincy, Illinois and earned her master’s degree in music education through the University of Illinois.
She taught music education for elementary students in Hileah, Florida, Griggsville, Illinois and Fort Madison, Iowa and was an orchestra instructor for 20 years for the Burlington school district.
She was a devout Catholic and member of Divine Mercy Parish and was honored to meet Pope John Paul II in St. Louis in 1999 and Bishop Sheen in Nauvoo, Illinois. She also attended services at Faith Temple for many years and other area churches in the Burlington area.
Jean was an avid fossil collector, loved fishing and playing the violin at church masses and visiting and playing for area nursing homes. While living in Mediapolis, she went to the Mediapolis Care Facility every Sunday to share the word of God and her love for music.
She sent monthly checks to India for over 40 years to help support those whom are less fortunate.
Jean resided at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center for the last two years of her life and was blessed with the tremendous support of her extended family.
She is survived by her daughter Ruth (Roger) Tapke, of Ellington, Connecticut; son-in-law, Patrick Mullahy of Burlington; four grandchildren, Lisa (Joel) Langley, Teresa (John) VanUtrecht, Sara Varga and Matthew (Sara) Mullahy; ten great grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Kay Mullahy, one sister Arlene Futrell and four brothers Joseph Engelmeyer, Paul Engelmeyer, James Engelmeyer and John Engelmeyer.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Jean will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 1st at St. John Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish. The Rev. Father Dominic Nguyen will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A Christian Wake will be held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, November 30th at Lunning Chapel with the family to receive friends following the Christian Wake until 7:00 p.m.

Larry Edgar Alter, 89, of Burlington, died Friday, November 17, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
Born December 8, 1933, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Clarence and Nellie (Deeds) Alter.
He was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College.
He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he moved to Chicago, Illinois and began working for Webcor Corporation. It was there he learned about the DEW (Distant Early Warning Line) that supplied communications to the United States in fear of the Russians attacking our country. While working on the DEW line he met a man from California who told him about California offering free college educations at that time, he left Burlington and began attending Orange Coast College.
On a college break, he returned to Burlington, where he met Marcia Willem. They were married on September 23, 1961, in Downy, California.
During a weekend visit with his cousin Harold “Hank” Alter, Larry was offered a job in the electrical construction industry working for C. F. Braun. That was his start in the industry he worked in for many years. That first job was a project engineer for the electrical portion of the Catalytic Cracker installation at the Arco Refinery in Torrance, California.
In his career, his electrical construction projects included, The Arco Refinery Hydrocracker unit in Torrance, California, a chemical plant in Moundsville, West Virginia, The Mobil Oil Refinery Coker Unit and Control House, The Humble Refinery Control House in Benicia, California, Westwood Plaza High Rise electrical, Laurence Welk Plaza Office High Rise and Apartment High Rise, a Water Reclamation Project in Huntington Beach, California, They Chrystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, The Anaheim Stadium Addition in Anaheim, California for the Rams and the Angels, Toyota’s National Headquarters in Torrance, California, Westminster Mall in Westminster, California, numerous NBC projects in Burbank, California, the Disneyland Jungle Cruise in Anaheim, California, various hospital projects in Orange County, California, other small Disneyland projects, The Austin Company Office Building in Irvine, California, The Pacific Bell Office Building in San Ramon, California, Universal Studios 36 story High Rise, and many others until his retirement in 1989. Even after his retirement, he was asked to consult and continue to advise project managers on projects.
Marcia and Larry traveled back to Iowa each summer, living in a motor home while traveling. In December of 2005, they purchased their home in Burlington, on the internet, without seeing it, simply because it was on the bluff, overlooking the river. He attributed his long life and good health to those wonderful river views.
Larry is survived by his wife Marcia Alter of Burlington; two children, David (Colleen) Alter of Scottsdale, Arizona and Diane Alter Bernhardt of Park City, Utah; two grandchildren, Matthew David Bernhardt and Daniel Alter Bernhardt; three sisters, Beverly Fisher of Burlington, Linda Kay of Clear Lake, Iowa and Cheryl Herbers of Placentia, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Leon Charles Alter in infancy, brother Jack Alter and sister Dana Harris.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 9th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
