Kathryn L. (Phillips) Glasgow, 91, went home on Sunday, January 21, 2024. She was born in Bellflower, Missouri on November 11, 1932 to Arthur Wray and Mae Juanita (Stansbery) Phillips.
In December of 1949, she married Lawrence Glasgow in Washington, Iowa.
She loved camping, fishing, mushroom hunting and especially running. She loved singing in RSVP and Rhythm Rockers.
Survivors include her brother Kenneth (Janaan) Phillips of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, David Glasgow of Coralville, Iowa and Larry (Lisa) Glasgow of East China, Michigan; two daughters, Linda (Bob) Grelk of Houghton, Iowa and Connie (John) Van Winkle of Alpharetta, Georgia; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two grandsons David Glasgow Jr. and Brian Glasgow, her parents, two brothers Dennis Phillips and Bobby Phillips and two sisters Francis Wiesner and Shirley Phillips.
According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and a private family burial will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa at a later date.

Daniel John Brehm, 89, of Burlington, died Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at the Addington Place of Burlington.

Born February 27, 1934, in Burlington, IA, he was the only child of Raymond and Marie Zeller Brehm.

In his youth, Dan was member of the Cub Scouts and then the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout with Palm. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1952 and then married Joyce Knotts in June 1954. They raised three children living in the same house for over 60 years.

Dan was a US Army Veteran and served most of his time in Korea. He then worked over 36 years for Mason-Hanger then Silas-Mason Co. as a Draftsman/Mechanical Engineer, retiring in 1999.

Dan and Joyce volunteered for many years at the Klein Center. When they were not volunteering Dan and his wife enjoyed traveling and would take numerous bus trips whenever they could. Dan especially loved the chainsaw sculpted wood bear he had professionally carved from the spruce tree in his front yard. He and Joyce would dress the bear for every holiday. People driving by would look forward to seeing this and leave comments on Facebook for “Da Bear”.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; daughter, Danette (Todd) Brandstetter; daugther-in-law, Laura (Kevin-deceased) Brehm; four granddaughters, Erin (Tony) Jacobs, Gabrielle (Ryan) VanDalen, Danielle (Brenden) Hill and Chantalle (Cody) Brown; and four great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Ava, Addelinn and Teagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his two sons, Kevin and Todd Brehm.

Per his wishes, Dan’s body has been donated to the University of Iowa for research, and no services are scheduled.

A memorial has been established for West Hill United Methodist Church in Burlington, where Dan was a member for almost 70 years and deeply loved his church family.

Dr. Carl Robert Bennett, “Bob,” passed away peacefully on January 21 in his hometown of
Burlington Iowa.

Bob was an educator for over 45 years as a teacher, principle, superintendent of schools, and
college president, where he pushed himself and others to be better; his optimism, smile, and
upbeat approach to life and learning made people believe that they could. Bob began his career
in Iowa, teaching for 11 years before becoming a high school principal, and school district
superintendent. Bob completed his PHD from Iowa State University, moving into higher
education also in Iowa, where he became the Vice President of Instruction at Kirkwood
Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Bob was President of three community colleges.
Gogebic Community College in Michigan, North Idaho College in Idaho, and Miles Community
College in Montana. After retiring as President of Miles Community College, Bob was the
director of the Human Rights Institute in Coeur d’ Alene. Bob was passionate about education
and he believed in its role in society and as a central means of improving one’s self. He was a
life-long learner.

In addition to his life in education, Bob led a full personal life with many friends, students,
colleagues, and family who loved and admired him. He had a love of nature and animals and
could be seen walking with one of his many dogs and chatting with those he met almost every
day. His infectious smile, curiosity, and love of conversation made him a welcome addition and
many friends. Bob’s dedication to a life well lived, including exercise, good friends, and seizing
the moment inspired many.

Bob is survived by his three children: Lisa Hobson, Carl Robert Bennett (Bob), and Stephanie
Bennett; his four grandchildren: Bennett Hobson, Carly Hamilton, Shane Fitzgerald, and Hannah
Bennett; his three great grandchildren: Jackson Hamilton, Tal Hobson, and Rose Fitzgerald and
his two sisters: Sherry Kuster and Marty Grimshaw. HIs wife, Donna Bennett, preceded him in
death.

A celebration of life will be held for friends and family in May. The date and location will be

Dean Richard Hahn, 61, of Burlington IA passed away unexpectedly on January 22, 2024 in Iowa City, IA.

Born May 31, 1962 in Davenport, IA Dean lived an exceptional life.

In his adolescent years, Dean relocated to Mediapolis, IA with his mother, Carlis Miller, stepfather Earl Miller and his siblings. Dean enjoyed life in the country including riding ATV’s, hunting, fishing, and life on the river at his family’s cabin.

After graduating, Dean had a fulfilling 37 year career at Wal Mart Distribution Center and had lifelong friendships with many of the people who worked alongside him.

In 1987, Dean married the love of his life, Irene Zagorski, and he moved to Burlington, IA. In 1998, they welcomed the birth of their only daughter, Noelle Hahn. Dean loved his wife and daughter very much. Dean lived out the rest of his life loving his family, including his daughter-in-law, Ashley, and two grandchildren, Kevin and Corri. Together they all enjoyed gardening, cooking, swimming, car shows, and countless other activities. But most importantly they enjoyed being together.

Dean was preceded in death by both of his grandparents, Harvey and Margaret Sothmann; parents, Earl and Carlis Miller, and father Richard Hahn; and two siblings, Doug Hahn and Vicki Koffend.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Noelle (Ashley) Hahn; two grandchildren, Kevin and Corri; sister, Jodi (Lenny Zimmerman) Hahn; sisters-in-law, Sofie (Dave) Dorn, and Maria Szabluk; brother-in-law, Jon Zagorski; and an abundance of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Mr. Hahn will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Fr. Dominic Nguyen officiating.
A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for The Kayla Foundation.

Mary Cecile Hodges
, 92, Wapello, died Friday, January 19, 2024, at Wapello Specialty Care, where she had been a resident since July of 2022. She had been in hospice care for approximately two months.
She was born in rural Van Buren County March 27, 1931, to Arthur Marion Poling and Etta (Morris) Poling. In 1936, she and her parents moved to a farm west of Keosauqua, where she lived the remainder of her childhood and youth.
She attended a one room schoolhouse through eighth grade, and then graduated as valedictorian in the Keosauqua High School Class of 1948.
She was a Rainbow Girl and was a high school basketball cheerleader.
Following high school graduation, she worked as a bank teller in Keosauqua. While working in the bank, she met her future husband, James (Jim) Hodges, who was the editor of the local weekly newspaper.
They were married in April of 1951 in Keosauqua, and after a short time in Odebolt, Iowa, moved to Wapello, where Jim was editor (and soon the owner) of the Wapello Republican.
The paper was soon incorporated as Louisa Publishing Company, which eventually owned and published seven weekly newspapers in Southeast Iowa, and had the area’s first web press.
Mary was Secretary/Treasurer of Louisa Publishing Company, retiring in 2002. She was active in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wapello, T.T.T., Wapello Chamber of Commerce, and in Republican politics.
She was an excellent cook, specializing in casseroles that could be prepared in advance so supper would be ready soon after arriving home from work, and in many other dishes as well.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1994, and by her parents.
Mary is survived by her sons Mike (Joan) Hodges of Wapello, and James David Hodges of Grandview; grandchildren Bob (Elissa) of Ankeny, Ben (Courtnee), Murray, KY, and Stephanie (Noah David II) Conner of Riner, VA; and great-grandchildren Madeline, Abigail, Tyson and Emerson Hodges, and Coralee and Noah David Connor III.
Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m., Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services in Wapello.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
A memorial in the name of Mary Hodges has been established. Memorial funds will be directed to Wapello Fire and Rescue and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wapello. Memorial monies may be mailed to P.O. Box 306, Wapello, IA 52653.

John J. Guanci, Jr., 83, of Woodstock passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024 at JourneyCare in Barrington. He was born September 2, 1940 in Chicago, the son of John and Marilyn Stapati Guanci.

A resident of the Woodstock area for 57 years, John was a local businessman and owner of Precision Quincy Corporation, a manufacturing interest, in Woodstock, before retiring in 2013.

John was a veteran serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961, specifically the 82nd Airborne as well the 7th Special Forces as a Green Beret. He earned his jungle warfare patch in Panama, his cold weather warfare patch in Alaska, and served in Laos as a radio operator and technical advisor before official U.S. involvement in S.E. Asia.

He was a member of the Crystal Lake Christian Church after accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior being baptized on September 13, 2015.

Surviving are his wife, Susan A. Guanci whom he married on August 14, 1965; son, John (Stacy) Guanci, III; and four grandchildren, Amelia, Hannah, Kaitlyn and Adam.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant twin daughters.

The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, followed by a graveside service, with Military Honors, at 2:00 pm. at the Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Veterans Path to Hope which is a charity that works with U.S. Military Veterans.
