Obituaries for Wednesday February 21st

Arlene M. Bonnesen, age 96, passed away peacefully, February 11, 2024, at Wapello Specialty Care Nursing Home in Wapello, Iowa.
Arlene was born May 3, 1927, to Arthur “A.J” and Veronica Christensen. After graduating from Otho High School in 1945, she joined the Army Nurse Corp. where she obtained her nursing degree. Arlene then married her high school sweetheart Lloyd Bonnesen on July 5, 1947, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Arlene was a faithful wife and devoted mother to her three children, Keith, Joe and Cathy. She moved with her husband and family from Fort Dodge a few times until remaining in the Wapello area. Arlene enjoyed her nursing career, which spanned over 40 years, traveling, gardening and time spent with her family.
She is survived by her three children; Keith Bonnesen and Joseph (Carol) Bonnesen both of Wapello and Catherine (Mike) Walker of Wilton, Iowa; grandchildren, Jeremy, Joseph, Chris Ann, Brad, Bret and Kim; great grandchildren, Jordan, Kyler, Jaylee, Taylor, Riley, Brayden, A.J., Archer, Abram, Drew, Ty. Alexis, Aidan, Aliana, Zachary, Cora, Hadley, Lucas and Katelynn; great-great grandchildren, Maci, Lilli and Daphni; brothers, Paul (Beth) Christensen, Mike (Karen) Christensen, Terry (Linda) Christensen and Carl (Elizabeth) Christensen; sisters, Catherine (Bruce) Welchel and Christine (Frank) Collie and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson Jon, one granddaughter Mindy, great grandchildren Dahlia and Elliott, five sisters, Patricia Christensen, Jody Condon, Theresa Harris, Margie Marsh and Mary Fuller, two brothers, Bill Christensen and Phillip Christensen and daughter-in-law Vicky Bonnesen.
The memorial mass for Mrs. Bonnesen will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 21st at St. John Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish. The Rev. Father Dominic Nguyen will be the celebrant. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be held at a later date in Parsons Cemetery, rural Wapello, Iowa.
A memorial has been established for Wapello Specialty Care.

Mary Lou Heater Terry, 75, of Burlington, died Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Savannah Heights, Mt. Pleasant. She was born November 16, 1948 in Mt. Pleasant to Max Cleo and Elsie Luella Glazebrook Heater. She married Edward L. Terry; he died June 13, 1986.

Mary was of the Christian faith and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She was a very private person; however, she did enjoy engaging in conversations with the ladies at Autumn Heights.

Survivors include her daughter Marcia Trisler; two grandchildren, Leashia Durham and Zach Trisler, both of Danville; and her great-grandson Dillan Mason.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Larry Heater and Richard Foland; and her sister Deloris Gwinn.

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at Burge Cemetery at a later date. Elliott Chapel, New London is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.


Donald LeRoy Neff
passed away on February 19, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, in West Burlington, IA.

Born August 25, 1936, in Burlington, IA. He was the son of Lawrence Earl and Helen Anna Steinbrecher Neff.

Don worked for the downtown Sears as the hardware manager for over 20 years. He later worked for the city.

He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Survivors include one son, Donald (Michele) Neff; two daughters, Penny (Mike) Sebeny, and Pam (David) Vaughan; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Neff; sisters, Dorthy Wilson and Mary Larson; Daughter, Susan Clemons; and granddaughter, Laura Benz.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ. A memorial service will be Thursday, February 22, 2024, beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Larry L. Kelly, 80, of Burlington, died Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born December 15, 1943, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Louis Lee and U. Pearl Hootman Kelly. He married Barbara in Germany, and she preceded him in death.

Larry graduated from the Burlington Community Schools.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from September 11, 1969 until September 10, 1975.

Larry spent most of his life as a truck driver, and loved doing just that. He was a big reader. It was known that Larry would read almost any book you would put in front of him. When he wasn’t invested in a book, you could find him watching old movies, especially westerns. Larry always had a song in his head. He was always singing no matter what. Above all, he especially loved all of his children, grandchildren, and family.

Survivors include his first wife, Sandra Morgan; son, Keith (Katherine ) Kelly of Fort Gratiot, MI, daughter, Kari (Roger) Benz of Wever, IA, son, Michael Kelly of Germany, son, Eric (Kimberly) Kelly of Burlington, IA; sister Sherry (Dan) Weinreich of Lomax, IL; grandchildren, Jarrett Cole Kelly of MI, Morgan Kelly of MI, Akiura Pena of Germany, Charisma Kelly of Germany; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Pearl, and two brothers, Donald Dean Kelly, and Jerry J. Kelly

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. Kelly will be at 10:00 am Friday, February 23, 2024, at Joy Baptist (2815 Avenue L, Fort Madison, IA) with Dan Weinreich officiating.

Juanita May Boyle, 96, of Burlington, died Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born May 2, 1927, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, she was the daughter of Andrew and Alma R. Wilson Boyd. On May 19, 1947, she married Thomas Frederic in West Burlington, Iowa. He passed away May 27, 2014.

Juanita worked for 32 years as a Nursing Assistant for Mercy Hospital, Burlington Medical Center, and the Klein Center.

Juanita was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She was known for her love of gardening, and yard work. She always made sure that her yard was looking impeccable. Juanita had a love for traveling. She had been to many places including weekends in The Ozarks, Florida, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Bahamas, and five NASCAR Races. Juanita was also known to be a sports fan cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and the Cardinals. When she was not cheering on her favorite sports teams, she was always up for a good shopping trip. What she loved most of all was spending time with her family. She always looked forward to the annual family vacation and family gatherings.

Survivors include son, Philip Boyle and Paula of West Burlington, IA, daughter, Cecilia (Darrell) Clevidence of Galesburg, IL, granddaughter, Martha (Andy) Goodman of Galesburg, IL, granddaughter, Margaret Strean and David of East Galesburg, IL; six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

As per Juanita’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. No visitation will be held, and inurnment will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established for St. Vincent dePaul Food Pantry and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Harold Richard Finke, 83, of Burlington, died Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 9, 1940, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Willett L. and Esther E. Schulz Finke. On April 4, 1981, he married Janice Coleen Bowerbank in Burlington.

He graduated from Danville High School in 1959. Harold served his country in the United States Army National Guard for six years. He worked for Ideal Concrete for 28 years.

He was a member of Harmony Bible Church in Danville. Harold loved ministry and always enjoyed making his custom thank you cards for friends and family that always included a Bible verse on them. He enjoyed taking care of his yard, mowing and doing projects on his house.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Coleen Finke of Burlington; four children, Craig Eugene Bowerbank of Lawrenceburg, TN, Brian Dean (Amy) Bowerbank of Zionsville, IN, Darla Janeen (Roy) Cochenour of Danville, Beverly (Ron) Vorwerk of Sperry; six grandchildren, Joshua Bowerbank, Katie (Zach) Foster, Trevor Bowerbank, Daniel Vorwerk, Benjamin Vorwerk, Sarah (Caleb) Siegle; two great-grandchildren, Jayden Bowerbank and Penelope Vorwerk; brother, Devin (Kristin) Finke of Danville; and two sisters, Barb (Lucky) Burrell of Middletown and Eileen (JK) Smith of Burlington.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

There will be no visitation or services.

Marcia A. Cortelyou, age 74, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024 at her home.

She was born April 15, 1949 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the daughter of Lowell Dean and Mary Ellen Wilson Cortelyou.

Marcia was employed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester as a Licensed Practical Nurse from 1973 until her retirement in 2013. She was a graduate of Media-Wever High School in Media, Illinois and the Southeast Iowa School of Nursing in West Burlington, Iowa. She was an avid supporter and volunteer for Paws and Claws Humane Society in Rochester. She also sang in the Rochester Chorale for several years. She was a huge fan of the Minnesota Vikings football team and especially, Marcus Sherels, former Viking player. She loved the Caribou Coffee Company and was a regular at her local coffee shop.

Survivors include two nieces: Lori (Jeremy) Schultz of Clive, IA, Jaime DeCrane of Stronghurst, IL, four great-nieces and nephews: Colten and Paige DeCrane and Will and Anna Schultz, two sisters-in-law: Elaine Cortelyou and Karen Henry, both of Stronghurst, her goddaughter: Erica Cain Schumacher, several cousins and many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother: Mitchell Cortelyou, and one nephew: Anthony Cortelyou.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. A memorial fund has been established for Paws & Claws Humane Society.
