Charles Layton Thompson, age 80, of rural Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 6:19 a.m. Sunday, June 9, 2024 at his home. He was born July 3, 1943 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Dale and Verna Woods Thompson. On October 22, 1962, he married Dorothy Gaylord. They later divorced.
Charles had been employed at Pikes Peak Greenhouse, Lehigh Leopold, and retired from Gates Rubber Company after 35 years of employment there. He was also a commercial fisherman. He enjoyed fishing and trapping, and some of his happiest days were when he was on the Mississippi river, or sitting at his kitchen table watching the birds at his feeders.
Survivors include eight daughters: Debra Barnes, Carla Harris, Bobbi Tapscott, Toni Martin, Lisa (Mark) Freyling, Connie (Jared) Hunt-Jacobs, DeAnne Brannon, and Brandi (Ecron) Thompson, twenty grandchildren: Tina (Jeremy) Hoenig, Charles Ryan (Catherine) Boughton, Lawrence Randall (Elizabeth) Boughton, Heather (Eric) Dively, Jeffery Tapscott, Nicholaus (Maranda) Tapscott, Victoria (Joseph) Smith, Tia (Kevin) Randall, Timothy (Emily) Martin, Johna (Dan) Butler, Marissa (Aaron) Balk, Angel Oak, Layton (Jacinda Hill) Housman, Krisden (Kaleb) Todd, Carlee (Dakota) Restuccio, Tom Brown, Monique Brown, Tiffany Brown, Josiah Thompson, and Nia Thompson, forty three great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, and one on the way. Also surviving are nieces and nephews: Mark Summers, Patty Sykes, Brian Summers, Scott Thompson and Larry Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings: Roberta Summers, and McKinley, Virgie Mae, Richard, Maxine, Jessie and Larry Thompson, the love of his life: Shirley Brannon, one niece: Teresa Thompson, and one son-in-law: Mark Freyling.
As per his wishes, cremation rites are being accorded. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024, in the Crane Cemetery, near Lomax, Illinois. Immediately following the graveside service, there will be a luncheon at his daughter Bobbi Tapscott’s home at 100 N. Church Street in Biggsville, Illinois. Thomas John Elmore, 75, of Burlington, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born March 15, 1949, in Burlington, he was the son of John H. and Doreen M. Brockelman Elmore. Tom met the love of his life in high school. Before the start of his senior year, he married Geraldine “Geri” H. Johnson in Burlington on June 12, 1966. They were very close to celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary.
He graduated from Burlington High School in 1967, and furthered his education at SCC and Iowa Wesleyan.
Tom started his career as a teacher, coach and Athletic Director for Burlington Notre Dame. He later taught and coached at Burlington High School and was the Athletic Director until his retirement in 2004. Throughout his career, he coached baseball, football, basketball, wrestling, track and softball. Tom even helped win a basketball state title for BHS with fellow coach Mack Turner. He truly loved coaching kids and was very involved with developing them in more than just sports. He strived to be a positive role model to every child he coached or taught.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association, Purple and Gray Foundation and was inducted into the Hall of Honor in the Burlington School District in 2017. When Tom was not spending time with family, he enjoyed spending time in his garden planting flowers, tinkering in his shop or working in his yard, and had his own lawn care service. He was proud to instill his work ethic into his children and grandchildren. His positive, loving and gentle spirit will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
Survivors include his wife, Geri Elmore of Burlington; son, Thomas J. (Lisa) Elmore, Jr. of Burlington; daughter, Angela Kay (Scott) Leinbach of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Derek (Jaden) Elmore, Kayla (Isaac Oard) Elmore, Samantha (Kris) Crail, Mason Leinbach, and Mitchell Leinbach; sister, Marcia (David) Walker of Burlington; brother, Dennis (Barb) Elmore of West Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Max Elmore and sister, Linda Elmore.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.
The funeral service for Mr. Elmore will be 10:30 AM Friday, June 14, 2024, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker and Reverend Brooke Robbins officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the service.
Memorials have been established for First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, the Burlington Community High School Athletic Department and the Purple and Gray Foundation.

Jack Samuels, 91, of Wapello, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2024 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Jack LeRoy Samuels was born on February 12, 1933 in Morning Sun, the son of Raymond Henry and Alice May Hupp Samuels. Jack graduated from Wapello High School in 1950. In May of 1953 he became a member of the US Army and spent two years in Camp Chaffee, Arkansas serving his country with a rank of Corporal. On May 2, 1953 he married Shirley Ann Fletcher in Iowa City. Following his discharge from the Army, they settled on a farm west of Wapello, Iowa and remained in that area until his earthly life ended. Jack farmed in Wapello raising cattle, sheep, hogs and crops. He grew sorghum and popcorn which he shared with family and neighbors. But he was most famous for his trip to Michigan when he brought back delicious peaches which were enjoyed by many.
Jack was a member of the Wapello Methodist Church where he served as an usher and taught Sunday School. He served as leader of the Wamaco 4-H Club, was a member of the Louisa County Cattlemen’s Association, was a Wapello Township Trustee, a 50-year member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and served as Grand Master. He was a member of Gideons International and served as a church speaker for the organization.
Jack will be deeply missed by his wife of 71 years, Shirley; daughter, Debra (Ralph) Smith of Burlington; sister, Doris Samuels MacEachern of Wapello; brother, Larry Samuels of Sigourney, Iowa; cousins; nephews; nieces; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Keith, Charles and Lester Samuels.
Jerry Lee Andrews, 81, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the Savannah Heights in Mount Pleasant. Jerry’s family would like to acknowledge Savannah Heights for the wonderful care and compassion they showed him during his stay there, especially Rhonda.
Born March 15, 1943, in Oskaloosa, he was the son of Kenneth Dale and Alma May Moore Andrews. On June 27, 1964 he married Candace “Candy” Schultz. Even Though their marriage ended in divorce, they still remained friends throughout their lives.
Jerry worked for Big Bear Farm Store. He worked almost every position with the company up to district manager before retiring after over 20 years.
He enjoyed cat fishing, deer hunting and drinking a beer. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Survivors include his four children, Brett (Lori) Andrews of Yarmouth, IA, Brenda (Greg) Andrews of Labelle, FL, Bart (Dana) Andrews of Daleville, AL and Brooke (Bill) Roberts of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Kali (Nick) Eastin, Kaprice (Jordan) Meyer, Eric Andrews, Zac Houtz, Zoey (Alex) Jensen, Dezirae Porter, Ethan Porter, Autumn Andrews, and Caysen Andrews; two great-grandchildren, Maverick and Millie Meyer; two sisters, Sharon Fisher of New Sharon, IA, and Karen Frascht of Grinnell, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Junior Fisher and Paul Frascht.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Andrews will be 10:00 AM Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Friends Cemetery in New Sharon, IA.
A memorial has been established for Savannah Heights Nursing Home in Mount Pleasant.

Keith Grimm, 79, of Wapello passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024 at Keosauqua Health Center. Keith Grimm was born on June 15, 1944 in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Clyde and Frances (Zoglman) Grimm. Keith was a 1962 graduate of Wapello High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy serving on the USS Hancock. On February 19, 1966, Keith was united in marriage to Carla Cross at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction. Keith was a Sheet Metal Worker for Local Union 91. He enjoyed horses, old time farming equipment, fishing, hunting and especially talking about his grandchildren.
Keith will be deeply missed by his children, Angie Ketcham of Muscatine, Amy (Rich) Lugo of Wapello, Josh Grimm of Lewiston, Idaho, Jebediah (Robin) Grimm of Wapello and Julie Grimm of Wapello; grandchildren, Nic (Danielle) Stratton, Alex (Anthony) Longhurst, Lucee Lugo, Macalister Lugo, Joe Lugo, Teresa (Travis) Vick, Zachary Grimm, Logan Grimm, Chase Grimm, McKenna (Ian) Poe, Morgan Grimm, Kasey Grimm, Kaleb Grimm and Tucker Tipps; great-grandchildren, Natalie Stratton, Lilly Longhurst, Alaina Longhurst, Oliver Longhurst, James Longhurst, Henry Longhurst, Tristan Vick, Copper Vick, Nova Vick, Maverick Vick and Vayda Poe; sister, Cheyrel (Mike) McConahay of Russell, Iowa; sister-in-law, Cindy Grimm of Letts and nieces and nephews.
