Patrick Edmond Brokaw, 61, rural Stronghurst, died on Monday, March 5, 2018, at his home. He was born September 27, 1956 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of William and Alice Kane Brokaw. On August 22, 1981, he married Brenda Harden at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Raritan.
Patrick was a 1974 graduate of Southern High School and a 1977 graduate of Western Illinois University. He loved his family and farming as a way of life in the Raritan community. He co-owned and operated the last custom ear corn shelling business in the area with his brother Ray and neighbor Dick Grant. He was an innovator in no-till and strip-till farming techniques from the 1970s to the present and enjoyed raising Katahdin Hair Sheep with his family for many years.
Patrick was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where he served on the Cemetery Board. He was a current Raritan Township trustee, a member of the Warren-Henderson Farm Bureau, Henderson County Historical Society, West Central FFA Alumni, and a former member of the Henderson County 4-H Extension Council and Henderson County Soil and Water Conservation Board. He was a proud supporter of Southern and West Central athletics and FFA programs. He was a Junior High and High School track and cross-country coach, which he greatly enjoyed. He believed in every child he coached and those from other teams and made them realize their true potential on and off the course. He was an avid Fighting Illini fan.
Survivors include his mother, Alice Brokaw of rural Stronghurst; wife, Brenda of rural Stronghurst; three daughters, Sarah (Ryan) Sextro of St. Louis, Missouri, Theresa Brokaw of Monmouth and boyfriend Bob Meade, Mary (Landry) Williams of New Haven, Indiana; one son, Father Lee Brokaw of Champaign; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Christine Williams; three brothers, Joe (Tammy) Brokaw, Ray Brokaw and friend Karen Richardson, Richard (Wendy) Brokaw; mother-in-law Norma Harden, brother-in-law Bob (Sharie) Harden and sister-in-law Melinda (Vince) Whiteman; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William Brokaw; one brother, Paul Brokaw; and father-in-law Duane Harden.
The rosary will be recited at 5pm on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 3pm on Friday, March 9th at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church near Raritan with Father Lee Brokaw as celebrant. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick’s cemetery. A funeral dinner will be served in the Community Building following the burial. Betty J. Keith, age 87, died Tuesday afternoon, wrapped in the arms on her granddaughter, Dana, at the Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.

She was the third daughter of Charley and Catherine Jackson, born November 24, 1930; and was raised in Morning Sun, IA. She graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1948, then moved to Burlington where she would meet and marry John T. Keith on September 2, 1952. They would make their home in Burlington, where they would have two kids and live a long and wonderful life.

She worked at Schramm’s in Downtown Burlington, National Research Bureau, and Montgomery Ward.

Betty enjoyed spending her life camping, quilting, going to flea markets, word books, and any and all things with her grandkids, great-grandkids, family and friends.

Her family includes two children, Terry (Sue) Keith of West Burlington and Kris (Dennis) LaVeine also of West Burlington; three grandkids, Amber (Ryan) Long of Iowa City, Dana (Aaron) Strawhacker of Danville, and Dustin LaVeine (friend, Jocelyne Wagner) of West Burlington; two step-granddaughters, Kathy House of Burlington and Serbreena (Curtis) Nichols of Burlington; five great-grandkids (Riley LaVeine, Aiden Long, Ava Long, Reese Strawhacker, and Camryn Strawhacker; one step-great-grandson, Jacob Nichols; and two siblings, Pauline Neff of Burlington and Barbara Shelman of Winfield, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John, one brother, Dean Jackson, two sisters, Mary Varvel and Charlotte Parkhurst, and one step-granddaughter, Teresa House.

Friends may call from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Prugh’s Chapel Downtown.

The Funeral for Mrs. Keith will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Prugh’s Chapel Downtown with Reverend Shane McCampbell officiating. Burial will follow at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. There will be a time of food and fellowship at —– following the Burial.

Richard Lee ”Dick” Knutstrom, 83, of Stronghurst, IL, passed away at 9:48 a.m. Tuesday March 6, 2018 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born November 15, 1934 in Burlington, the son of Ralph and Ruth Howell Knutstrom. On June 19, 1954, he married Marlene Cleek in Gladstone, IL.

Dick graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1953 and the DeVry School of Television and Radio, in Chicago, in 1954. He returned to Stronghurst and opened Knutstrom Radio and TV Store. Later, he joined his father in the operation of Knutstrom Chevrolet dealership in Stronghurst until 1985, when the dealership closed. He then was a salesman for Deery Brothers in Burlington until his retirement, and was often their top salesman.

Dick loved his family and was a top notch woodworker. He was an avid gardener and landscaper. Besides being a businessman, Dick was very community minded. He was instrumental in bringing a doctor to Stronghurst, and also was one of the founding members and EMT’s of the Stronghurst Ambulance Service. He and another friend developed the plan to bring Stronghurst’s first nursing home (Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab) to town. He was a member of the Stronghurst Booster Club, Lions Club and the Optimists Club. He was a life long member, and served on several boards of the Stronghurst Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Karen (Dennis) Dehner of Urbandale, IA, one son, David Knutstrom of Stronghurst, four grandchildren, Jared Knutstrom, Joseph Dehner, Julie Pollard, Jaclyn Dehner, seven grandchildren, Wyatt, Ella, and Anna Pollard, Kinsley Knutstrom, Marley and Grayson Inaclang, David Dehner, and one brother, Kendall (Nancy) Knutstrom of Cordova, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday March 10, 2018 in the Stronghurst Presbyterian Church with Pastors Phil Cooper and Amy Booker-Hirsch officiating. Virgil Allen Kroll, Sr., age 79 of Sperry, died Monday afternoon, March 5, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The son of Harold and Leona Ruhser Kroll, he was born on April 7, 1938 in Jamesville, Minnesota. He married Patsy Marie Schnedler on May 26, 1957 at the Latty Church, rural Burlington.

Virgil graduated from Sperry High School in 1956. He served for several years with the Army Reserves. Virgil was a farmer and had worked at the Sperry Elevator and then with Hawkeye Concrete, retiring after 28 years. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church at Mediapolis where he had served as a deacon. His passion was farming and he also enjoyed gardening and raising cattle. He volunteered with the Mississippi Valley Blood Center both as a donor and also in deliveries.

His family includes his wife, Patsy; five children, Virgil ‘Allen’ & Debbie Kroll, Jr. of Littleton, Colorado, Larry & Diane Kroll of Burlington, Lisa & Jeff Sisco of Mediapolis, Wayne & Karie Kroll of Burlington, and Sharon & Tom Lingenfelter of Yarmouth; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and three siblings, Betty & Mike Sisco of Mediapolis, Stanley & Sharol Kroll of Washington, and Shirley & Ed Allen of Longmont, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; two sisters, Eunice Seaman and Maxine McCain; and a brother, Roger Kroll.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

The funeral ceremony for Virgil Kroll will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 9, 2018, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery with family and friends gathering at the church fellowship hall for a lunch.

Memorial gifts will benefit the Mediapolis Volunteer Fire Department and the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service.

Joan Louise McCannon, 83, of Burlington, died at 2:03 PM Friday, March 9, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born December 29, 1934, in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Louis Mitchell and Dorothy Marie Nielson Pence. On October 23, 1958, she married Lloyd “Augie” McCannon in Burlington, Iowa. He died on February 24, 1993.

Joan was a homemaker and worked in production at Mississippi Bakery for twelve years.

She was a die hard Cubs fan, Hawkeye fan, loved karaoke, going to the garage, and her cat Smoak.

Survivors include two sons, Terry McCannon and Kevin (Cindy) McCannon both of Burlington; one daughter, Cindy (Steve) Robinson of Burlington; five grandchildren, DeAnn, Marcus, Trent, Chad, Melissa, and many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Ginger of Quincy, IL.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Debbie Casady, and one granddaughter, Angelia Warf.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

A Celebration of Life for Mrs. McCannon will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Eagles Club.

Mr. Edward E. Lionberger, 69, of rural Dallas City, IL passed away at 11:15 PM Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.
He was born November 4, 1948 in LaHarpe, IL, the son of Jesse Ralph and Bertha Johnson Lionberger. On October 7, 1995 he married Debbie Bolton in Nauvoo, IL.
Ed was a 1966 graduate of the Nauvoo-Colusa High School. He then graduated from the University of Illinois in 1971 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
He farmed for many years in the Colusa area. Ed served as a Director of the Colusa Bank and was a member of the U of I Alumni Association. He enjoyed working on computers, fishing trips to Canada, doing carpentry work on his home and traveling. His travels included visiting Japan, the Philipines, and Hong Kong.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie, 1 daughter, Kaylyn Lionberger, 2 sons, Kevin and Kristian Lionberger, all of rural Dallas City, 2 brothers, Jess (Doris) Lionberger of Dallas City and Robert (Nancy) Lionberger of Niota and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and 1 great-great-niece.
Ed was preceded in death by one son, Kollin Lionberger and his parents.
Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Mark Nichols officiating. Burial will be in the Harris Cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00PM. A memorial fund has been established for his children’s education. Margaret Canella Matsch, 99, of Burlington, Iowa peacefully died at her home on March 14, 2018. Marg was born December 2, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Mary Sansone Canella. On September 2, 1989, she married Robert Matsch.

Marg graduated from St. Paul High School in Burlington. She loyally worked for over 40 years in the District Court system and served as Trial Court Clerk.

Marg was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and was involved in many civic functions with her husband Bob.

Marg was a beautiful, petite woman of Italian heritage who was strong and mighty. She enjoyed traveling. For years she was devoted to caring for her mother and later her Aunt Mary. Marg adored her husband Bob and they found great enjoyment in the company of their family and friends. Marg lovingly cared for Bob until his death in 2013. Her warm and welcoming hospitality continued into her last days.

Marg is survived by one brother-in-law Richard Matsch; nieces and nephews: Cathy (Brent) Packard, Rick Canella, Ronna (Bob) Cline, Sandy Miller, Bill (Kristina) Matsch, Katherine (John) Daley, Molly (Mark) Briggs, Dan (Carol) Matsch, and Marti (Andy Dieringer) Matsch; 14 great nieces and nephews and 13 great, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Fr. Joseph Canella and Richard Canella; brothers-in-law Charles Matsch and William Matsch; sisters-in-law Kathy Canella, Marie Matsch, Susan Matsch, Peggy Matsch and Lib Matsch; and nieces Betsy Matsch and Anne Matis.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers of Advanced Home Health Care and Terri Dowell of US Bank for their love and great care of Marg. The family is most appreciative of friends and helpers who visited Marg, especially these last years.

In celebration of Marg’s life, a funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 19th, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul Catholic Church with The Very Rev. Fr. Marty Goetz as Celebrant. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. A luncheon will be served at The Drake after the service. Interment will take place at Aspen Grove Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Divine Mercy Parish.

Kevin Allen Wittenmyer, born October 17th, 1951 to Kenneth A. & Ada M. Wittenmyer in Bowling Green, OH, passed from this life after a courageous 13 year battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on March 15th, 2018.

Kevin married Ruth Anne Culbertson in Toledo, OH on May 18th, 1974. He worked for Champion Spark Plug/Federal Mogul for 47 years. He and his family moved to Burlington, IA in August, 1993. In life, he loved gardening, amassing a large collection of over 100 different hosta species, visiting lighthouses throughout the country, and visiting amusement parks with his family, especially Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth & Ada Wittenmyer and his sister Karyn Hilding.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, four sons, Ian M. (Tabetha), Jared T. R. (Michelle), Andrew M., & Nicholas M. Wittenmyer, four granddaughters, Bella S. Riepe, Mavinee B. & Soloway O. Wittenmyer, and Harper A. Wittenmyer, and two brothers, Roger (Diana) & James Wittenmyer, nieces, nephews, and their children.

There will be a private visitation for family prior to cremation.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Juanita B. Specht, 66, of Palos Heights, IL, passed away at 3:52 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL.
She was born on July 28, 1951 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Walter and Hilda Collins Sanders.
Juanita enjoyed dancing, playing bingo, watching Elvis impersonators and especially her family.
Survivors include three children, Richard Specht of Palos Heights, IL, Kristal Holmes of Crown Point, IN and Ronald Specht of Cedard Lake, IN, seven grandchildren, two sisters, Verna Satala of Cape Coral, FL and Joanne Sanders of Oak Forest, IL and two brothers, David Sanders of San Jose, CA and John Sanders. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Anitra Specht.

Thurman C. Huffman, age 85, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018. Thurman was born in Davis County, Iowa on June 7, 1932 to Thurman Huffman Senior and Woody Gilbert Huffman. He married Dorothy Johnson on September 13, 1952 in Burlington. She passed away in July, 2013.

Mr. Huffman served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant after 38 years. In addition to his work at the plant, Mr. Huffman was a business agent for the International Guards and Security Workers of America, where he negotiated contracts improving the working conditions and pay for workers across the country.

After his retirement, Mr. Huffman worked as a handyman with his friend Harold McNeece. Mr. and Mrs. Huffman were devoted to helping the poor. They provided low-cost and often free housing to those in need. He loved woodworking and gardening, his friends, and his family. Mr. Huffman was a member of the RAB Board, assisting with clean-up efforts at the IAAP in Middletown. He assisted in filing and verifying claims for many former plant employees.

Thurman was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters, his beloved wife, Dorothy, and his daughter-in-law, Penny.

Survivors include his children, Becky (Tim) Helmick, Cathy (Bill) Hodgin, Darrel Huffman, and Susan (Jim) Ferrell, seven grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Mr. Huffman was of the Christian faith. There is no planned service at this time. Cremation is being handled by the Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home per Mr. Huffman’s wishes. The family will gather with friends for a time of fellowship and internment of Mr. and Mrs. Huffman’s ashes at a later date.

Shirley Kindig, 90, of Burlington, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, NE.

Born March 1, 1927, in Macomb, IL, she was the daughter of Morris Delbert and Mary Ethaleen (Durr) Payne. On June 9, 1946, she married William Orville Kindig in Burlington. They were married 70 years.

Mrs. Kindig worked at Champion Spark Plug for 30 years.

She was a 1945 graduate of Burlington High School.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling and spent their winters in Apache Junction, AZ. She was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries and liked cooking and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include one daughter, Beth (Jared) Carstensen of Omaha, NE; one son, Todd (Mariana) Kindig of Parker, CO; one granddaughter, Lindsay Grimes of Omaha; one great-grandson, Carsen Grimes of Omaha; one sister, Diana (John) Romine of Farmington, NM, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

The memorial service for Mrs. Kindig will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. A reception will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service.

A memorial has been established for the Josie Harper Hospice House; located at, 7415 Cedar St, Omaha, NE 68124.

Donald Lee Krekel, 73, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 18, 2018 at his home.

Born August 5, 1944 in Burlington, he was the son of Cecil and Viola (Pierson) Krekel. He married Cynthia Louise Hult on June 26, 1976 at Oak Street Baptist Church. She died July 22, 1995.

He grew up on his family farm and attended Brush College Burlington, a one-room schoolhouse.

After graduating from Burlington High School, Burlington Junior College, and the University of Iowa, Don was a long time Math professor at Southeastern Community College, teaching for 44 years. In the past, he taught Sunday school at Oak Street Baptist Church. Currently, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Don loved to travel especially with his daughters and especially to the national parks in the American West. He enjoyed hiking in the Grand Canyon and Grand Teton National Park and especially loved seeing the beauty of Utah. He loved to play board games, especially the ones that dealt with strategy. He also enjoyed learning about history.

He was the most devoted father to his two daughters and after the death of his wife, he never missed any of their activities or phone calls.

Survivors include his two daughters; Andrea Krekel of Iowa City and Elizabeth Krekel of Orlando, FL, Brother-in-Law, Michael (Doris) Hult of Burlington, Sister-in-Law, Deborah Krekel of Solon, Nieces, Molly (Matthew) Steinbrech of Solon and Melissa Hult of Ankeny, and nephew, Jonathan (Olivia) Hult of Bastrop, TX, three cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Gene Krekel, nephew, Erik Krekel, infant niece, and two cousins.

The funeral service for Mr. Krekel will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23rd at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 22nd from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

A memorial has been established for Southeastern Community College Foundation for an Advanced Math or Science Scholarship in memory of Don Krekel.

Conrad “Spike” Lee Olson, 80 of Burlington died 4:45 p.m., Saturday, March 17, 2018 at his residence.
He was born October 3, 1937 at Monmouth Hospital, Illinois to Frank and Betty Olson. He went to G&O School in Gladstone, Illinois. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Cascade. He had three tours to Europe. On July 8, 1961 he married Karen Williams at West Hill United Methodist Church. He was owner, with his brother Philip, at Olson Bros Custom Shop for almost 50 years. He helped run 34 Raceway for a year. He loved the shop and all the racing, especially the sprint cars.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years; two sons, Brad (Brenda) Olson and Kyle (Jane) Olson; a daughter, Gina (Lance) Walker; four granddaughters; Brandi (Travis) Plummer, Britni (Jake) Diewold, Mikayla Walker and Allisha Blanco; one grandson, Reece Blanco; four great granddaughters, Saydee and Gemma Plummer, Paitynn and Haiden Diewold; one great grandson Gavin Plummer; two brothers, Philip and Steve Olson of Burlington; special brother-in-law Don (Carla) Williams of West Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded. There will be a celebration of life at a later date.

Sharon L. Nichols, 80, of Burlington, died Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born October 5, 1937 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Woodrow Hand and Faye Harris. She married Jack Nichols Sr. on March 31, 1956 in Kahoka, MO. He died September 29, 2015.
Sharon worked at Lamont Ltd. for over 30 years. She lived for her children and grandchildren. She loved reading, traveling and going to the casino.
Survivors include her four children; Jack Nichols Jr. and Cheryl Longshore both of Burlington, Dianne Carlson (Rich Scholler) of Oakville and Timothy (Lisa) Nichols of Carman, IL; eleven grandchildren; several great grandchildren and one sister, Kay Danes of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children, Jeff and Sally, one great grandson Nicholas and eight siblings, Lucille, Wendell, Fern, Joyce, Bonnie, Richard, Linda and Adrian.
The funeral service for Mrs. Nichols will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 22nd at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.

Audrey Isabelle Whitaker, age 90 of Klein Center in West Burlington, formerly of Wapello, died Monday March 19, 2018 at the Klein Center. The daughter of Paul and Clara (Moeller) Griffin, she was born January 14, 1928 at Spirit Lake. The family moved to Wapello in the early 1940s. On October 5, 1946 she married Alfred Whitaker at Wapello; he died February 1, 2004.

She was a graduate of the Wapello High School. She worked at Thatcher Glass, Sylvania, and I.A.A. P. She was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church and had attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello.

Survivors include: three sons, Mike and Sue Whitaker of Burlington; Roddy and Dorothy Whitaker of Mediapolis; Craig and Jackie Whitaker of Oakville; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant daughter, infant grandchild, three sisters and five brothers.
The funeral service will be Saturday March 24, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with Rev. Darryl Erickson officiating. Interment will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 2-8:00 p.m. at Dudgeon-McCulley, where the family will meet with friends from 6-8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Keith Walters, 78, passed away March 20, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

A Celebration of Keith’s Life will be held at 1:00 PM Friday at the Wayland Mennonite Church. Reverend Wayne Heffner and Reverend Kelly Slagle will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Elliott Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Allen Dooley, 49, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 12:25 PM, March 20, 2018 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

He was born on April 25, 1968 in Keokuk, IA the son of Leo J. And Joan M. Schneeberger Dooley. On February 13, 1991 he married Tara Gilpin. Together they had one son, Anthony. They later divorced.

Michael was a 1986 graduate of the Dallas City High School and then served in the Marine Reserves. He spent many years working as a truck driver and crane operator.

Michael is survived by his son, Anthony (Brittany Belville) Dooley of Colchester, IL, two brothers, David (Phyllis) Dooley of Dallas City, Roy Dooley of Pleasant Hill, IL, five sisters, Janet Strope of Kansas City, MO, Mary Schiedel of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Patty (Blaine Laws) Peterson of Montrose, IA, Sharon (David) Puckett of Sedalia, MO, Sandy Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, eighteen nieces and nephews, twenty-two great-nieces and nephews, several aunts, uncle and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew and two brother-in-laws.

Donald Lee Krekel, 73, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 18, 2018 at his home.

Born August 5, 1944 in Burlington, he was the son of Cecil and Viola (Pierson) Krekel. He married Cynthia Louise Hult on June 26, 1976 at Oak Street Baptist Church. She died July 22, 1995.

He grew up on his family farm and attended Brush College Burlington, a one-room schoolhouse.

After graduating from Burlington High School, Burlington Junior College, and the University of Iowa, Don was a long time Math professor at Southeastern Community College, teaching for 44 years. In the past, he taught Sunday school at Oak Street Baptist Church. Currently, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Don loved to travel especially with his daughters and especially to the national parks in the American West. He enjoyed hiking in the Grand Canyon and Grand Teton National Park and especially loved seeing the beauty of Utah. He loved to play board games, especially the ones that dealt with strategy. He also enjoyed learning about history.

He was the most devoted father to his two daughters and after the death of his wife, he never missed any of their activities or phone calls.

Survivors include his two daughters; Andrea Krekel of Iowa City and Elizabeth Krekel of Orlando, FL, Brother-in-Law, Michael (Doris) Hult of Burlington, Sister-in-Law, Deborah Krekel of Solon, Nieces, Molly (Matthew) Steinbrech of Solon and Melissa Hult of Ankeny, and nephew, Jonathan (Olivia) Hult of Bastrop, TX, three cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Gene Krekel, nephew, Erik Krekel, infant niece, and two cousins.

The funeral service for Mr. Krekel will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23rd at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 22nd from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Mrs. Leona H. Wegener, 92 of Burlington, died 5:08 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Blair House in Burlington.
Born on December 9, 1925 at her grandparents home in Mediapolis, she was the daughter of Antone and Sadie (Luecking) Nickelson. She married Mark H. Wegener on August 10, 1947 at First United Church of Christ in Burlington.
Leona worked as a registered nurse in Iowa City and Burlington. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1943 and Burlington Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She attended First United Church of Christ and St. Luke United Church of Christ. She helped start Girl Scouts in West Burlington. She was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader for 3 years. She was active in many clubs and organizations including; the Big Sister Program, Choir for 40 years, Director of the Youth Choir, member of Burlington Women’s Club, Historical Society Board Member, Jane A. Delano Club, treasurer of St. Luke UCC Sarah Circle and Chairman of the medical Memorial at Phelps House, which opened in 1990. She also started summer camperships for band students going to Kirksville and Iowa City. She loved being outdoors and having a special time with the grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Mark; children, Dan (Joan) Wegener of New London, IA, Nan (Jerry) Wegener Oliver of San Antonio, TX and Randy (Dori) Wegener of Lone Jack, MO; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Glenn “Barney” Nickelson.

Beverly JoAnne Brent, age 74, passed away on Friday, March 23rd, 2018, peacefully at her home. She was born in Burlington, IA, at the Burlington Hospital on December 16th, 1943. She was the daughter of Archie Leroy Morris and Mary Eileen (Davis) Morris. She married Donald Ray Brent on July 11th, 1964, at the Methodist Church in Stronghurst, IL.

Beverly graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1962. She then attended Burlington Business School and was employed by the Henderson County ASCS office in Stronghurst, IL. She resigned this position to attend College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, and graduated from there in 1970. Beverly then returned to Stronghurst where she taught 2nd and 3rd grade for 32 years.

Beverly was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church, Retired Teachers’ Association, Alpha Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Chapter NI of Philanthropic Educational Organization. She loved gardening, bird watching, and playing bridge with her friends, but Bev’s greatest joy was her family. She dedicated her life to giving, sharing, and spending each moment she had with her children and grandchildren, ensuring their well-being in all areas of their life.

Survivors include her husband Don Brent, twin sons, Lonnie (Brenda) Brent of Kirkwood, IL, Rodney (Amanda) Brent of Gladstone, IL, one daughter Natalie (Tyler) Blindt of Gladstone, IL; 14 grandchildren-Brandon, Madeline, Mitchell, Jackson, Spencer, Grace, Preston, Logan, Emily, Matthew, Molly, Lucas, Lilly, Sophia; brothers Donald Morris of Ogden, Iowa, Kenneth Morris of Stronghurst, IL, one sister Ruth (John) Bickell of Burlington, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother-Jerry Wayne, and one grandson Landon Michael Brent.

Phyllis M. Cole, 83, of Media, Illinois passed away at 8:41 p.m. Thursday March 22, 2018 at OSF Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. She was born April 18, 1934 in Media, the daughter of Floyd and Gladys Littrel Link. On March 25, 1951, she married Charles Cole in Burlington, Iowa.

Phyllis was a graduate of Media-Wever High School, and a lifetime resident of Media. Besides being a full time mother to four sons, she was co-owner of, and an integral part of the operation of, Cole Implement Company, in Media, for many years.

Survivors include her husband, three sons, Larry (Christine) Cole of Davenport, IA, Ed (Karen) Cole of Gladstone, IL, Mike (Terri) Cole of Stronghurst, one daughter in law, Kathy Cole of Media, IL, seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and one brother, Kenneth Link, of Tempe, AZ.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Cole, two great grandchildren, Collin Cole and Jackson Gipe, four brothers, William, Glen, Harvey, and Charles Link, and three sisters, Laura Link, Louise Cole, and Luella Bowen.

James H. Heinzel, 91, of Burlington, died at 6:20 PM, Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Great River Klein Center in Burlington.

Born October 3, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Frank and Caroline Liederman Heinzel. On September 10, 1949, he married Jean A. Darnall in Burlington. She died February 20, 2015.

James worked for the post office as a clerk for 33 years, retiring in 1982.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1945.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the World War II.

He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. He loved fishing, hunting, woodworking, volunteering for St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and ushering at church. He especially enjoyed family get togethers.

Survivors include two sons, James M. (Kathi) Heinzel of Long Beach, MS, and Dennis R. (Lauris) Heinzel of Creston, IA; three daughters, Patricia L. (Chuck) Clark of Winfield, IA, Diana M. (Earl) Andrade of Colorado Springs, CO, and Nancy A. (Tom) Jacobs of Danville, IA; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Clarence, Ralph, William & and Albert, and one grandson, Chuck.

Gerald “Jerry” Lee Andries, Jr., 57, of Burlington died at his residence at 10:18 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018.
Born on August 8, 1960 in Burlington he was the son of Gerald Lee and Sandra Lee Gohn Warth Andries, Sr. He was married to Lisa Diane Edsion.
He was employed by the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company, Iowa State Penitentiary, and ran Temple Theatre in Mt. Pleasant.
Gerald was of the Christian Faith, he knew God and loved Jesus. He was a member of the Hamilton Walters Marine Corp League, and was an avid sportsman enjoying fishing, hunting, and being outdoors especially in the mountains.
Gerald served his country in the United States Marine Corp.
Survivors include his children, Gerald Lee Andries, III, Jennifer Andries and David Andries all of Tyler, Texas; several grandchildren; three brothers, James Andries of Burlington, Marvin Warth of Bonaparte, David Warth of South Carolina; four sisters, Kim Hodson of Donnellson, Michelle Kongable of Winfield, Mindy Andries, and Melissa Ryner both of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one sister Mildred Wilhite and two uncles.

Barbara L. Hanks, 81, of Burlington, went home to be with the Lord at 12:28 AM Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at the Rose Bush Gardens in Burlington.

Born June 15, 1936, in Centerville, IA, she was the daughter of William and Gladys Lowe Horne. On July 24, 1954, she married Raymond Hanks Jr. in Burlington, IA. He died on November 12, 1997.

Barbara was a homemaker.

She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed raising her family and watching them grow over the years; especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathie (Todd) Sattler of Burlington, and Connie (Glenn) LaVeine of St. Peters, MO; five sons, Gregg Hanks, Joe (Denise) Hanks, Eric (Jennifer) Hanks, and Doug (Cynthia) Hanks all of Burlington, and Chris (Tina) Hanks of Palm Desert, CA; eight grandchildren, Geoff (Stephanie) LaVeine, Scott (Nikki Zwenleine) LaVeine, Britanie (Matt) Clover, Carlie (Quinton Quam) Sattler, Jacob Hanks, Lydia (Michael Messer) Hanks, Jack Hanks, and Ian Hanks; three great-grandchildren, Harper, Jackson, and Tyler; one brother, Bill (Addrienne) Horne of Tucson, AZ.

She was a member of the Salvation Army. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, bible studies and singing at church.

Shirley Jean Bergman, 80, of Glasford, IL passed away at 11:10 PM Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the Timbercreek Rehab & Health Center in Pekin, IL.

She was born March 11, 1938 in LaHarpe, IL, the daughter of James and Coralena E. Feikert St. Clair.

Shirley worked as a bartender in Peoria, most recently at the Cooler Tap. She later worked in the drapery department at JC Penny’s in Peoria. In her spare time she enjoyed watching movies and spending time with her family.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Debra Bitner of Peoria and Joanna Frank and Brenda Guntorius, both of Princeton, IL, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 infant brothers and 1 great-grandson.

Calvin Otis Lair, 94, of Danville, died Monday, April 2, 2018 at his

Susan Alice Moss, 71, of Burlington, died at 7:00 pm Sunday, April 1, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 15, 1946, in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Edward C. and De Etta A. Lietsch Senn. On January 22, 1966, she married Dennis C. Moss at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington.

She graduated from Notre Dame High School. She attended Burlington Jr. College, Virginia Highlands College, and received a BA Degree in Speech Communication/Public Relations from Radford University.

She worked mainly in retail and development and retired from the American Cancer Society as Director of Health Education and Patient Services.

Susan was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, St. Paul’s Church, where she served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and on the Altar Guild Committee. She also served on the Administration Commission, Communication Committee and Funeral Luncheon Committee. She was a member of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Board of Directors, Friends of the Symphony, Fine Arts League, Hetta Gilbert, Des Moines Co. Historical Society, Books ETC Book Club and PEO Chapter NH. Susan was a former member of the Rotary Club, Burlington Golf Club, Burlington Medical Center Auxiliary and Burlington Area Arts Council. She enjoyed reading, music, tennis, art, traveling, writing, dancing, the Iowa Hawkeyes and time spent with friends & family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis; one son, Brad (Jill) Moss of Falls Church, VA; one daughter, Angie (Tim) Hill of Grayslake, IL; three brothers, Dick (Sandy) Senn of Austin, TX, Tom Senn of Coralville, IA, Alan Senn of Burlington; four sisters, Kathie Erickson of Burlington, Marcia (Lonnie) Green of Lindale, TX, Mary Lee (Larry) Matteson of Burlington, Ruth Ann (Rick) Martin of Bonita Springs, FL; five grandchildren, Adam Moss, Braden, Garrett, Reyna & Pilar Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fredy Martinez, 97, of Burlington, died at 4:09 AM Monday, March 26, 2018, at his home while surrounded by his loving family.

Born November 7, 1920, in Elk Falls, Kansas, he was the son of Trinidad and Rosario Zuniga Martinez. He later moved with his family to Fort Madison, Iowa where he attended Fort Madison schools. He met his beloved wife Hope in Fort Madison and they married on December 27, 1952. She died November 3, 2011.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Fredy worked for the Iowa Ordinance Plant in Middletown, Iowa and retired in 1985.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish- SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, among others. He always had a soft spot for his pets, especially his dog Sterling. Fredy had a long and fulfilling life.

Survivors include one son, John G. Martinez of Burlington; one daughter, Anna M. Gordon of Plano, TX; one son-in-law, Michael Gordon of Plano, TX; three grandchildren, Erin, Shane, and Ryan; and his sister, Carmen Bolanos of Casa Grande, AZ; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Frank, and one sister, Angelina.

Raymond Johnson age 88 of Burlington, Iowa died Easter Sunday April 1st surrounded by family after a short but serious illness at Great River Hospital, Burlington, Iowa.

He was born in Prairie Grove, Iowa, August 30, 1929. Son of Henry and Amanda (Thompson)Johnson.

Ray worked in sales for several feed companies such as Moor-mans and Purina. He once owned a Maytag repair and sales company in Ottumwa, Iowa. He also worked for the railroad.

He enjoyed bowling, hunting, traveling, all things mechanical and electronic, except computers.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years Mary Ann Johnson, a sister and two brothers.

He is survived by his son Sheldon Johnson (Kathie) and daughter Suzanne Bukowski (Joseph). A granddaughter, grandson and great granddaughter.

Evelyn M. Fuhrer, 86, of Burlington died at 8:22 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at GRMC Emergency Department.
Born October 16, 1931 in Kingston, IA, she was the daughter of Everett Burr and Dorothy (Kneedy) Brockway. She married Arnold William “Bill” Fuhrer August 10, 1952 at Kingston United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on December 13, 2015.
Evelyn worked as an accountant for Brayton Chemicals and retired from Wilbur Ellis. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed camping and spending time on the river with family. She was a member of the Burlington Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame.
Survivors include two sons, William M. (Patt) Fuhrer and Kelvin L. (Ann) Fuhrer, both of Burlington; one daughter Vicki L. (Rodney) Pierson of Mediapolis, IA; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Lila Bakerink of Mediapolis, Karen Elkin of Wapello; one brother Keith Brockway of Burlington; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.
A private family graveside service will be held in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner will officiate. There will be no visitation.

Rodney Clinton Wallman, 81, Yarmouth, died Friday, March 30, 2018 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

The funeral service for Mr. Wallman will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Jeff Duffy officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with the family present to receive friends from noon until the time of the service. Burial will follow the service at Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union. Elizabeth M. Rankin, 84, of rural Lomax, IL, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst. She was born December 18, 1933, near Wapello, IA, in the country home of her parents, Jesse J. and Clara E. Bigger Landrum. On June 11, 1954, she married Delbert Rankin in Stronghurst. He preceded her in death on May 30, 2011.

Mrs. Rankin graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1951, and Gem City Business College in Quincy in 1952. She assisted her husband in the operation of the family farm, and also was employed at H&R Block in Burlington, IA for twenty eight years. She was past president of the Henderson County Home Extension, Stronghurst American Legion Auxiliary, and 14th District American Legion Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab for many years and was a member, and served as Treasurer, of the Terre Haute United Methodist Church for many years.

Survivors include one sister-in-law. Patricia Rankin of rural Media, IL, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Lee Unger officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst Cemetery. Calvin Otis Lair, 94, of Danville, died Monday, April 2, 2018 at his home.

The funeral service for Calvin Lair will be Saturday at 1:30 PM at Elliott Chapel, New London with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will be at Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard. Larry Titus, 89, of Burlington, died at 3:40 PM Monday, April 2, 2018, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born July 27, 1928, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence Lawson and Mary Salome Titus. On November 11, 1949, he married Donna Jo Goddard in Burlington. She later passed on October 18, 2002.

He retired after 40 years from Burlington Northern Railroad as a Material’s Manager. After retirement he worked for Shottenkirk driving cars.

Larry was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from September 21, 1945 until July 26, 1949. He was stationed on the USS Seer and USS Superior.

He was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and helping people.

Survivors include five sons, Delane (Nancy) Titus of Spokane, WA, Dana (Kay) Titus of Maple Park, IL, Daylin (Diane) Titus of Prince Frederick, MD, Devin (Jeanie) Titus of Biggsville, IL, and David (Virginia) Titus of Mount Airy, MD; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and devoted brother and friend, Ed Titus of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Mike and Lawson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Friday, April 6, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with the family to receive friends.

Jamie Bryant Robbins, 39, of Burlington, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at his home in Burlington.

Born January 15, 1979, in Burlington, he was the son of Chris Eugene and Charlene Rae Rice Robbins. On September 13, 2003, he married Nicole A. Wiberg in Biggsville, IL.

He worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a trainmaster.

He enjoyed hunting, water skiing, and boating. He was a fan of all sports, particularly golf. He was a Burlington City Champ three times. He loved his children and spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife, Nicole Robbins of Burlington; one son, Evan Robbins, and two daughters, Laina Robbins and Avery Robbins, of Burlington; his parents, Chris and Charlene, of Biggsville, IL; one brother, Chad Kenneth (Marnie) Robbins of Lantana, TX; one sister, Jennifer “Jen” Rae (Tony) Starr of Mount Pleasant; four nieces, McKenna Carlson, Emma and Myah Starr and Harper Robbins and one nephew, Aiden Wiberg; maternal grandmother, Donna Rice of Biggsville, IL; many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his mother and father-in-law, John and Debra Wiberg of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Chester and Betty Robbins, and his maternal grandfather, Kenneth Rice.

Arthur Kent Hall, 85, of Burlington , died at 1:05 PM Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at the West Point Care Center in West Point.

Born September 25, 1932, in Macomb, IL, he was the son of Harley Eugene and Aurora Dell Mason Hall.

Art was the operator of the Coach House Restaurant. He also taught Business at Southeastern Community College for 30 years.

He graduated from Macomb High School in Macomb, IL in 1950. He graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL in 1964 with a Masters’ of Science in Education.

Art served in the United States Navy from March 1952 until March 1960 during the Korean War.

Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Rohn and Jan Cole; six nephews, David, Thomas, Jim, Steve, Bill, and Shane; and five nieces, Lisa, Michelle, Carla, Kim and Lori.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and one brother, Mason.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Celebration of Life Service will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM with military rights at 6:00 PM Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Diana L. Issleb, age 83, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 2:28 p.m. Wednesday April 4, 2018 at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, Illinois. She was born July 19, 1934 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Wilbur and Marie Deutsch Davis. On January 2, 1964, she married John H. Issleb in Chicago. He preceded her in death on September 26, 2004.

Mrs. Issleb was a graduate of Schurz High School in Chicago. She lived in the Chicago area until moving to Wisconsin in 1974, and later moved to the rural Stronghurst, Illinois area in 1978. She enjoyed gardening, and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include four children, Debra (Jerry) Christopoulos of Arlington Heights, IL, Dawn Novack of Wateford, MI, William (Theresa) Kay of Hoffman Estates, IL, Leonard Kay of Oquawka, IL, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one sister, Marie Karras of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Arline F. Lovell, 91, of LaHarpe, IL, passed away at 12:54 a.m. day, April 6, 2018 at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, IL.

She was born on October 19, 1926 in LaHarpe, IL, the daughter of Arlie L. and Grace Collins Owsley. On May 29, 1947 she married Ardis L. Lovell in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on February 22, 2011.

Arline graduated from the Burlington Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician for a short time. She also worked at the Former LaHarpe Hospital, former Americana Nursing Home, Macomb and NTN Bower, Macomb. She enjoyed quilting, reading, crosswords, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

Survivors include four children, Marcia (Dallas) Neff of LaHarpe, LaVerne (Peggy) Lovell of Memphis, TN, Brian (Joyce) Lovell of LaHarpe and Layne (Mary) Lovell of St. Louis, MO, eleven grandchildren, Jacob (Carolyn) Neff, Stacie (Nathan) Wisehart, Josiah (Erin) Neff, Lacie (Bart) Thompson, Hunter (Aimee) Lovell, Conrad (Jenny) Lovell, Natalie (Willis) Young, Alex (Katie) Lovell, Hollie Lovell, Jolequyn Abby, and Meredyth (Curtis) Schroyer, twenty-three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Samuel, and Rebekah Young, Mackenzie, Adriana, Noelle and Victoria Jerabek, Julie Rose and Rachel Lovell, Laney Weaver, Van Angel, Cooper and Myles Neff, Cyrus, Daphne, Phoenix and Vaughn Lovell, Carson and Kylie Lovell, Tessa Abby, Grayson Schroyer and Charlotte and Penelope Thompson, one sister, Violet Allen, two half-sisters and four half-brothers.

Rudy Naifeh, 93, of Burlington, died at 9:22 AM Friday, April 6, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born August 23, 1924, in Madrid Bend, Kentucky, he was the son of Aref and Eula Laster Naifeh. On September 1, 1943, he married Frances Amy Moore in Wichita, Kansas.

He worked with his uncle at their family meat market. He later owned and operated Naifeh’s Grocery Store for 24 years.

He attended Ft. Madison High School.

Rudy was a U.S. Army Air Corps. Veteran serving from 1942 until 1948.

He enjoyed playing pool and poker and going bowling. He was a member of the Burlington Moose Lodge, Elk Lodge, Eagle’s Club and American Legion. He was on the Burlington Board of Banks for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Frances, of Burlington; two sons, Tom (Karen) Naifeh of Marco Island, FL, and Nap (Becky) Naifeh of Burlington; two grandchildren, Eric and Natalie; four great-grandchildren, Samantha, Nicholas, Tristan and Riley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda Link.

Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Thursday, April 12, 208 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. There will be a time of sharing followed by military honors at 6:00 PM. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Velma Jean Keitzer, age 81, of Mediapolis died Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis. The daughter of George and Alta (Benkert) Riemann, she was born October 21, 1936 in Burlington. On June 2, 1957 she married Howard Keitzer in Kingston; he died December 12, 2017. She was a 1955 graduate of Huron High School.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis where she held many positions including President of the United Methodist Women. She was also active in TTT and Evening Star King’s Daughters and she served on the Des Moines County 4-H and Youth Committee. Velma was a lifelong homemaker. She also worked at Sylvania and as a longtime tour guide for American Vision Travel. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
Survivors include: one son Dan (Jan) Keitzer of Mediapolis; and one daughter Jodie (Evan) Bruce of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Dalton, Kendra, Colton, Keaton and Chandler; three sisters, Winona Anderson of Oakville, Virginia Kidder of Knoxville and Doris Ann Rechkemmer of Burlington; one brother Don Riemann of Longmont, CO and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, an infant daughter Tamra Lynn, and three sisters, Marcelle Brown, Dorothy Springsteen and Florence Miller.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., at the Mediapolis United Methodist Church, with internment to follow at Kossuth Cemetery. Pamela Kae Goble, 50, of Burlington, died at 1:45 AM Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born August 27, 1967, in Muscatine, IA, she was the daughter of Howard Franklin and Cheryl Sue Hatfield Gibson. On August 18, 1990, she married Brian Alan Goble at First United Methodist Church in Burlington.

She enjoyed spending time outdoors; gardening, fishing, collecting rocks, watching wildlife and going for walks. She had a soft spot for all animals. She enjoyed learning about her family history and gathered as much genealogy information as she could. But most of all she loved spending time with her family and babysitting her granddaughter.

Survivors include her husband, Brian, of Burlington; one son, Jacob Goble of Burlington; one daughter, Anna Goble of Burlington; her mother, Cheryl Gibson; one granddaughter, Eva Oleson; two sisters, Angela (Steve) Burch of Gilbert, AR, and Sharon (James) Lewis of Burlington; one niece, three nephews, and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

At her request, there will only be a public graveside service and celebration luncheon.

The graveside service for Mrs. Goble will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. A Celebration Lunch will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

Marlene Gerst, 85, of Burlington died at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab Center in Mediapolis.
Born April 3, 1933 in Macomb, IL, she was the daughter of William Johns and Cora V. (Riddle) Johns Nelson. She married Ernest T. Gerst on June 11, 1966 in Macomb, IL.
Marlene was employed as a production worker for Champion for 33 years and later at the U.A.W. Hall. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ. She enjoyed attending Blackhawk basketball games and was an avid Hawkeye and Cardinals fan. She belonged to the United Auto Workers Union and was inducted into the Des Moines County Democratic Party Hall of Fame. Marlene had her own opinions in life and was always right.
Survivors include her husband Ernest; children, Mona Shaw Burlington, Jacky Wistrom rural Sperry, Mark Shaw Argentina, Sandra Wasson rural Burlington, Jackie Smith Ridgecrest, CA, Sharon Malone Burlington, Edward Gerst rural Burlington, April Schulthies West Burlington and Colin Gerst rural Danville; twenty one grandchildren; twenty seven great grandchildren (with one on the way); and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Eric; two brothers, Bernard and Norman Johns; and a step brother, Edward Nelson.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gerst will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 10th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Will Ryan will officiate. Interment will be in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Oakville. Family will receive friends 5-7 pm, Monday, April 9th at Lunning Chapel.

Richard P. Gerdner, 90, of Burlington died at 5:32 a.m., Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Born July 3, 1927 in Burlington, he was the son of William Sr. and Rachel (Drumm) Gerdner. He married Edna Marie Rust on June 30, 1950 in Burlington.

Richard was self-employed, owning Gerdner Rental Properties for 67 years until his retirement in 2017. He played football and graduated from Burlington High School. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Burlington. He belonged to the American Legion Post #52 and was an avid Hawkeye, Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. It was a great day when the Cubs won the World Series! He had many interests including going to auctions, attending Cubs games, bowling in a number of leagues, morel mushrooms, weekend trips and rides to rural farm communities with his daughter. Richard truly loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; daughter, Linda Gerdner of Burlington; sister in law, Helen Gerdner of Burlington, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Jr., and Robert; and three sisters, Ruth Fischer, Myrtle Williams and Helen Gerdner (died in childhood).

The funeral for Mr. Gerdner will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 12th at Lunning Chapel. Chaplain Jay Miiller will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.

Goldeen (Dravis) Wirt, 91, of Denmark, died at 5:45 PM Sunday, April 8, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 11, 1927, in Muscatine, IA, she was the daughter of Clarence M. and Ethel Corine Fowler Carr. On August 30, 1943, she married Frank August Dravis in Kahoka, MO, he later passed on February 7, 1973. She then married Calvin Arthur Wirt in Denmark, IA, he later passed on January 13, 1995.

She spent her life as a farming wife.

She was a member of the Denmark United Church of Christ. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, antiquing, auctions, square dancing, bird watching and animals.

Survivors include one son, Dean Dravis of Florida; one daughter, DeAnne (John) Bonar of Denmark; three step-daughters, Katie Wirt of Columbia, MO, Patricia Wirt of Burlington, and Beverly (Mike) Hunter of FL; one step-son, William (Peggy) Wirt of Burlington; several grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her birth parents, as well as, her adopted parents, Mac and Retta McCahan, one son, one grandson, and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Prugh’s Chapel Downtown. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM Thursday April 12, 2018 at Prugh’s Chapel Downtown prior to the memorial service.

Gwendolyn Alyce Smith, 88, of Burlington, died at 2:45 AM Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

Born November 8, 1929, in Libertyville, IA, she was the daughter of Cloyce Virgil and Sarah Verle McCleary Hyde. On September 9, 1947, she married James Price Smith in Memphis, MO. He later passed on March 13, 1995.

She was a homemaker and also worked for J.C. Penney Company.

She graduated in 1947 from Fairfield High School.

She was of Christian faith. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She enjoyed being a Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma. She especially enjoyed baking pies, animals, playing pinochle and traveling.

Betty Garrett, 67, of Burlington, died at 1:06 AM Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in Burlington.

Born February 23, 1951, in Birmingham, AL, she was the daughter of John Edward and Louella Beard Garrett.

Betty was a homemaker. She also worked out of the home at Brent Enterprises for 17 years as a bookkeeper and in maintenance. She also worked at CDAC as a caregiver for the State of Iowa for 12 years.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking, crafts and spending time with her family.

Survivors include three sons, Danny Nelan of Shreveport, LA, Edward Ora Nelan of McAllen, TX, and Tim Gould of Rock Island, IL; two daughters, Shannon Leffler of Burlington and Leslie (Luke) Blunk of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph (Judy) Garrett of Aledo, IL, Donnie (Julie) Garrett of Milan, IL, and Virgil (Carrie) Paul of Moline, IL; three sisters, Barb Beechamp of Bettendorf, Elizabeth (Larry) Martin of Alabama, and Pam Garrett of Chicago; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Betty Boop will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne Ryan officiating. Cremation will be accorded following the service. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

James Richard White, 91 years old resided in Chicago, Illinois when he made his transition Friday, April 6, 2018 at 8:00pm at his home.

Richard was born in Burlington, IA July 11, 1926, one of 9children born to Frank and Birdie White.

Richard received his Bachelor Degree from University of Iowa, continued his education at University of Michigan (1958) and USC (1973) where he earned a Master Degree from each.

Richard served in the Military during World War II of the United States Army. After serving in the Military, Richard began his civilian career in Chicago working as a social worker for Cook County, IL. Richard later moved to New York to work for the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services from 1963-1965 as a Regional Family Services Social Worker. From 1965-1968 he served as a Social Administration Advisor in Washington, D.C.

In 1968 Richard relocated to Chicago, IL to the Chicago Regional Office where he held several positions starting with Incentive Program Coordinator, Community Services Program Specialist, Equal Employment Opportunity Officer, Regional Assistance Payments Program Specialist, Deputy Director of the Work Incentive Program, Social Services Program Specialist, Deputy Regional Program Director, Administration for Children, Youth and Family, and Chief of the Head Start Bureau. Richard retired in 1986 as the Chief of the Community Program Division.

Richard enjoyed attending Church (though he resided in Chicago, he always maintained his membership with St. John Methodist Church in Burlington, IA), socializing with family and friends, dancing and traveling throughout North America and abroad. He was a key member of the Rat Pack Organization where he was part of a team that mentored youth and provided college scholarship funds. Richard was very instrumental in making financial contributions to the homeless and hungry locally and nationally. Richard was best known for his appreciation of foods. No matter where he traveled or events he attended, he ALWAYS had his camera to capture the fond memories and candid moments.

From the Union to Contance Jeanette Quinn in 1953, his daugther Jennifer Elaine was born. Richard is survived by daughter, Jennifer (Keith) Griffin, granddaughter, Kimberly (Robert) White-Ward, grandson Rodney Rucker II, two great-grandchildren, James Richard White II and Savannah, two great-great-grandchildren, Jamiyah and James Richard White, III, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Oran, DeEdwin, Robert, Clyde and Frank, Jr., and three sisters, Marcella, Thelma, and Betty.

The funeral service for Mr. James Richard White will be 11:00 AM Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend James A. Salter and Pastor Orlando Dial officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

Mike L. Neff, 64, of Burlington, died at 3:11 PM Wednesday, April 11, 2018, in Burlington.

Born March 9, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Richard L. and Shirley Beth Penticost Neff. On March 4, 1988, he married his wife Margaret.

He worked as a frame technician at Mike Campbell’s Body Shop for 28 years.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from November 27, 1972 until December 26, 1973.

He was a member of the Burlington Gym and loved PBR. He was a regular at Hallers, and loved watching Wheel of Fortune there. He enjoyed tinkering, spending time with his friends and family and especially playing with his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Burlington; one daughter, Crystal Deuitch of Burlington; one son, Richard (Sausha) Neff of Burlington; four grandkids, Julie, Tanton, Austyn and Charlie; several nieces and nephews; two sisters, Judith “Judy” Dressler of Fort Madison, IA and Margret “Margie” (Ronald) Kienast of Burlington; one brother, Larry Neff of Des Moines; and one aunt, Wanita Lassmann of Fort Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and his grandparents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

A celebration of life will be held at Hallers on Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 PM.

John K. Livermore, age 81, of Raritan, Illinois passed away at 7:34 p.m. Wednesday April 11, 2018 at OSF Medical Center in Peoria. He was born December 5, 1936 near Raritan, the son of Ivan and Eleanor Wragg Livermore. On July 26, 1959, he married Beverley Knox.

After graduation from high school, Mr. Livermore served overseas in the United States Navy from 1955 until 1957. He returned home to become the 4th generation of the Livermore family to farm the family farm near Raritan. He also worked as a mechanic for the former White & White Grain Company, which later became the Twomey Grain Company, from 1976 until his retirement in 2001. After retirement he worked as a mechanic for the school buses for Southern Transportation and West Central Schools. He also provided transportation for special needs students of West Central Schools.

John was a member of the Roseville Masonic Lodge # 519 and the Raritan Reformed Church. He enjoyed camping, working in his shop, spending time with his family, and attending grandchildren’s events. He was a fan of Dale Earnhardt racing and the Green Bay Packers football team.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Rhonda (Jay) Blender of Raritan, Roxanne (Charles) Corzatt of Stronghurst, one son John (Melissa) Livermore of Media, seven grandchildren, Channon (Jon) Rider, Crystal (Justin) Rider, Brandy (Tanner) Bigger, Johanna (Ryan) Walker, John (Chelsea) Livermore, Brent Blender, and Jennifer Livermore, seven great grandchildren, Wyatt Rider, Keagan Walker, Josephine Rider, Cora Livermore, Aubrey Bigger, Bronson Walker, and Zoey Rider, and two sisters, Marjorie Claycomb of Winston-Salem, NC, and Ivagene Wheeler of Pekin, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Robin Watson.

The funeral service for Mr. Livermore will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, with Greg McClintock officiating. Philip Leroy Delzell, age 82, of Morning Sun, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, at his home. The son of Lawrence ‘Tut’ and Verlee Hamilton Delzell, he was born on June 4, 1935 in Morning Sun. Phil graduated from Morning Sun High School and Greer Automotive Tech in Chicago. He married Joan Bonar and they later divorced. Phil married LuJean Lamp Hafner.

With his brothers, they started Delzell Bros. Chrysler Dealership in Morning Sun in 1964. At that time there had only been two Chrysler products in Louisa County. The Delzell Bros. Dealership has grown to a substantial business serving a large area around Morning Sun.

His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Phil’s family includes his wife, Jean; four sons, Monte & Becky, Kent & Sheila, Kirk & Vicki, and Mark; eight grandchildren, Danielle, Tayler, Joe, Jordan, Lauren, Jessica, Matt, and Travis; four great grandchildren, Monroe, Willa, Emme, and Roy; two brothers, Craig & Judy and Roger; a sister, Darla & Richard Lane; and several extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Ian.

The family will have a private gathering and graveside service at the Elmwood Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life for family, friends, and customers will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Delzell Bros. Dealership.

Robert ‘Bud’ Moore, age76, of Morning Sun, died Thursday evening, April 12, 2018, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis. The son of Kenneth Robert and Dorothea Beatrice Davis Moore, he was born on February 7, 1942 in Burlington. He married Catherine Anderson on December 30, 1967 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bud attended schools in Morning Sun, Cornell College, and Drake Law School. He was a Lawyer, the Louisa County Attorney, a Magistrate Judge in Louisa County for 20 years and a Manager at Burma Big & Tall. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun.

He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid fan of the Cardinals. He loved texting his grandkids.

Bud is survived by his wife, Cathy of 50 years; a daughter, Victoria ‘Tora’ & James Cox of Port Byron, Illinois; two grandchildren, Billy and Katie; his brother Steven Moore of Land O Lakes, Florida; and nieces and nephews, Julie Moore, Judd Moore, Jennifer Hein, Chuck Hein, Dawn Schuster, Candy Kelley, Kurt Kelley, and Todd Kelley. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law.

The funeral ceremony for Robert ‘Bud’ Moore will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun with Rev. Jon Evans officiating. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery with a lunch gathering for friends and family to follow at the church.

Memorial gifts will benefit the Morning Sun Ambulance, Morning Sun Friends of the Library, and Morning Sun Community Center.

She was born on January 31, 1973 in Iowa City, IA. She was the daughter of the late Craig Harman and Rhonda Thompson Foley.

Nichole was a 1991 graduate of the Dallas City High School. She worked at Big Muddy’s in Burlington for 16 years and was currently employed at the Winegard Company in the Tech Support office. Nichole was an avid fan of NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed reading, attending concerts and traveling, especially the “Girls Trips”. Above all Nichole loved spending time with her many friends and family.

She is survived by her mother, Rhonda Foley of Lomax, IL, one son, Logan Pfeifer of Burlington and his father, Derrick (Kelly) Pfeifer of Burlington, one brother, Colin (Roseanna) Harman of Wichita, KS, one niece, Kayana Harman, one nephew, Brady Harman, her step-mother, Doris Harman of Dallas City, IL, grandmother, Joyce Thompson of Lomax, and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

Nichole was preceded in death by her father, one sister, Tracy and her grandparents.

Nicholas D. Babcock, 28, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away Friday April 13, 2018 in a traffic accident near Carman, Illinois. He was born June 15, 1989 in Rancho Cordova, CA, the son of Donna Babcock.

Nicholas was a graduate of Rio Linda High School in Rio Linda, CA. He lived most of his life in the Sacramento, CA area, moving to Stronghurst in 2014. He was currently employed at American Ordinance in Middletown, and had also worked for the Winegard Company for three years.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Donna and Dominic Del Carlo of Stronghurst, four brothers, Giovanni, Andrew, Joseph and Christian Del Carlo, all of Stronghurst, grandparents, Don and Sharon Babcock of Stronghurst, and Gerald and Sarah Del Carlo of Sacramento, five aunts, Valerie Babcock, Shelly Dawson, Lisa Babcock, Krystal Del Carlo, and Danielle Del Carlo. Also surviving are several cousins.
