Pearlie Mae Payne

God saw the road was getting rough, the hill was hard to climb, He gently closed those loving eyes, and whispered, “Peace be thine”.  The weary hours, the days of pain, the sleepless nights are passed; the ever-patient, worn out frame, has found sweet rest at last.

On Monday, December 19, 2016, at 12:05 AM, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, Big Mama entered into eternal rest.

Pearlie Mae Burrage Payne was born in DeKalb, Mississippi on March 15, 1937, to the late Lee Arthur and Annie Laura (Shumate) Burrage. Pearl was the youngest girl and 5th child out of 7 children born to this union. She attended school at Gray Ridge and New Madrid High School. Pearl was baptized at New Mount Zion Baptist Church Essex, MO.

In 1960, Pearl moved to Burlington. On April 16, 1969, she was united in holy matrimony to Howard Payne.

Madison where she served as chairman of Pastor’s Aid, on the Mother Board and Kitchen Committee until she could no longer serve. She was a member of St. Elmo Chapter #3 of The Order of Eastern Star.

Pearl was employed by Holiday Inn for 12 – 14 years, Kings, and Hotel Burlington as head cook.  Pearl worked for Bob McCannon, Dr. & Mrs. Jim Small, and Mr. & Mrs. Ed Daily for years.

Pearl never met a stranger, she would talk to anybody. Pearl was known as “mother” to many.  Throughout her illness she kept a pleasurable attitude, she called Great River Medical Center was her second home.  She would always tell the nurses I will see you at Wal-Mart.  Pearl enjoyed working and maintaining her flower and vegetable garden.  She enjoyed collecting and making new recipes, canning, baking, making preserves, quilting (she made a quilt for each of her grandchildren), and crocheting.

Pearl leaves to treasure her memories, her husband, Howard, her children: son, Robert Barber of St. Paul, MN, Leon Barber of St. Paul, MN, Annie P. (Nathaniel) Patterson of Harlem, GA, Diane Barber of St. Paul, MN, Jenna Walker of Minneapolis, MN, and Shelia (Andrew) Worley of Kansas City, MO. He found joy in playing rugby for the Cedar Rapids Headhunters and in working with and mentoring troubled teenagers. He had a heart of gold, and his love for his nieces and nephews knew no bounds. Jacob has an inquisitive mind and was an unorthodox thinker. Books, his constant companion, fueled his dreams, his worries and his voracious appetite for knowledge.
