Del Russell Fischer, 72, of Middletown, died 1:08 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Great River Medical Center.
Del was born in Burlington, Iowa September 8, 1945. He was the son of Carl William and Barbara Caroline (Streed) Fischer.
Born with Cerebral Palsy and being almost totally deaf, Del was to face and conquer many challenges during his life.
He started his education by attending the University of Iowa School for the Handicapped for several years. He then moved to the Iowa School of the Deaf in Council Bluffs. He was a graduate of the school’s high school.
With great persistence Del learned to ride a bike, run in Special Olympics and mow yards with his own riding lawn mower.
Del was a client at Productions Inc. in downtown Burlington. When that workshop closed, he became a janitor at the Gugeler Home at Home Haven. Del worked there for 12 years Major back surgery ended Del’s employment career. He was a member of the Great River Club.
He is survived by his sister, Kay (Jim) Magel of Middletown; niece Lisa (J P) Cahill of Ankeny; nephews Donald Magel of Middletown and Dean (Emily) Magel of Johnston, IA and one great nephew James Magel of Johnston.
The funeral service for Mr. Fischer will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 11th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. Interment will be in Middletown Cemetery, Middletown, IA. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
A memorial has been established for the New London Specialty Care.
