Obituaries Thursday March 3rd

Howard Wendell Hobbs, age 97, of Morning Sun, died Tuesday evening, March 1, 2016 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman.  The son of George Nicholas and Mary Etta Dotson Hobbs, he was born on January 3, 1919 in Morning Sun.  Howard married Betty Grace ‘Betts’ Baxter on June 18, 1950 in Morning Sun.  She preceded him in death on September 3, 1997.

 

Howard graduated from Morning Sun High School.  He served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II.  He had operated the Sinclair Station in Morning Sun and had worked as the school custodian and retired as rural mail carrier for the US Post Office in Morning Sun.

 

He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, a 70 year member of the Hays-Scott Post of the American Legion in Morning Sun, the Glenn Allen Post 5166 of the VFW in Wapello, and the National POW and current Commander of the Southeast Iowa Chapter.  He had been a township trustee, was honored as the Citizen of the Year in Morning Sun in 2003, and volunteered at the Veterans Hospital and the Blind Veterans Golf Tournament both for many years.  He enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones, and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

His family includes two sons, Nick Hobbs of Iowa City and Todd (Deborah) Hobbs of Norwalk; a daughter, Sharon Ball of Morning Sun; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betts; a grandson; a brother, Dallas Hobbs; and a sister, Pauline Jacobs.

 

The funeral ceremony for Howard Hobbs will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating.  Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery with military rites by the Louisa County Veterans Association.

 

Friends may call on Friday from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

 

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the American Legion Hays-Scott Post and the Centenary United Methodist Church.

JoAnn Wiele, 80, of Burlington, died at 7:53 AM Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the Genesis Medical Center East, Davenport.

 

Born March 15, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Oscar F. and Johanna J. Kupfer Wiele.

 

JoAnn was a school teacher and taught for the Gary, Indiana Community Schools for twenty-eight years.

 

She was a graduate of Burlington High School, and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree with a major in music education from Western Illinois University.

 

She was a member of the First United Church of Christ where she started playing the piano at the age of nine, later becoming the Director of Music and church organist in 1992.  JoAnn served as an Elder, member of the Consistory, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of Music and Worship.  She loved her cat Lucy.  She enjoyed reading, needlework, taking care of her indoor plants and her flower gardens.  She along with her sister Joyce and brother-in-law Clinton, enjoyed traveling from coast to coast and abroad.  They would leave every Christmas morning and drive for two days to go to Alabama to spend time with her nephews.

 

Survivors include one sister, Joyce Hagemann of Monmouth, IL; two nephews; one great-niece; one great-nephew; and several cousins.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother-in-law, Clinton.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, March 7, 2016 at First United Church of Christ.

 

The memorial service for Ms. Wiele will be 11:00 AM Monday, March 7, 2016, at First United Church of Christ with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Social Hall at the church following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Barbara J. Walters Logan, 86, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 9:28 AM Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living, Fort Madison, IA.

 

She was born on April 26, 1929 in Burlington, IA, the daughter of Fred F. And Dorothy L. Johnson Howe. On October 11, 1947 Barbara married George S. Walters in LaHarpe, IL. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1997. On March 18, 2001 she married Gail Logan in Las Vegas, NV. He preceded her in death on September 22, 2015.

 

Barbara was a 1947 graduate of the LaHarpe High School. She worked as a Receptionist for Dr. Carillo in Dallas city for many years as well as various other part-time jobs in the Dallas City area. She was a member of the Dallas City Senior Citizens, where she was the former President. Barbara was also a member of the Dallas City American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, First Christian Church of Dallas City and the River of Live Fellowship in Dallas City. She also volunteered with the RSVP.

 

She is survived by two sons, George (Marlene) Walters of Dallas City, Ricky Walters of Galesburg, one daughter JoAnn (Dan) Flaherty of Niota, IL, two step-children Sherrie (Terry Caldwell) Pence of Burlington, Dennis (Leysa) Logan of Dallas City, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Shirley Poulter of Beverly, IL and two brothers, Fred and Richard Howe both of Dallas City.

 

Barbara was preceded in death by her husbands, one infant daughter Dorothy June, and one sister Betty Brewer.

 

Services will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Doug Clark Officiating. Burial will follow at Harris Cemetery, Dallas City. A visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the River of Life Fellowship and the Lee County Hospice.
