Obituaries Friday March 4th

Jean Eleanor Wick Murphy, of Burlington passed away peacefully on March 2, 2016.

 

She was born September 12, 1917, in Henry County, IA, she was the daughter of William E. and Catherine Cornick Binkly Wick. On January 20, 1940, she married Carl William Murphy in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He died in 1973.

 

Jean held several office positions in her working career.  She worked at Iowa Telephone Office in Mt. Pleasant, Des Moines Register and Tribune, Sears, Lehigh Leopold and the Catalog Department in J.C. Penney’s in Burlington.

 

She was Miss Iowa in 1937.  Jean was a wonderful, kind and loving woman.  Her favorite thing was to spend time with her family.  She will be missed.

 

She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Nancy A. Surland of Nebraska and  Jane E. (Steve) Strittmater of Davenport. She’s a much loved grandmother of Dawn (Tim) Edwards, Jeff (Sonya) Clark, Eric Cheek, Lee Cheek, Sean (Becky) Cheek and Jim (Diane) Cheek; and great-grandma of eight grandchildren and great-great-grandma of one and another one the way.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Don W. Wick, and one son-in-law, Gene Surland.

 

Friends may call on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home from noon until 5:00 PM.  The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Murphy will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 7, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

 

Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory is in care of the arrangements.

 

 

Sharon Anne Moore, 67, Burlington died Wed 3/2 at her home.

She is survived by a daughter, Tracey Chambers of Burlington, a stepson, Scott Moore of Denville, NJ & 6 grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9 AM Sat 3/5 with the family receiving friends from 3-5 PM at Lunning Chapel.
