Maxine “Frankie” Corman, 91, of Burlington, died, surrounded by her loved ones, at 4:48 PM Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at her home in Burlington.

 

Born May 3, 1924, in Wever, IA, she was the daughter of Joseph Harry and Vena Cooley Robbins. She married Fred Earl Corman in Burlington, Iowa in October of 1939. He died on May 1, 1984.

 

Maxine was a homemaker.

 

She enjoyed reading the Bible, the newspaper, listening to the radio, garage sales and nutty bars. She loved it when her sister Nellie came to visit, and loved everyone.

 

Survivors include four sons, Joe Corman of AR, Bob Corman of Keosauqua, Gerald Corman and Mike Corman both of Burlington; two daughters, Carolyn Bliss and Pam McGaw both of Burlington; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Nellie Hill of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, three sisters, two sons, Marvin and Randy, and six grandchildren.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation or services.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for her family.

William Joseph Bandy, 71, of Burlington, died at 12:38 PM Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

 

Born November 14, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence M. and Doris Ruth Dobson Bandy.

 

William worked for Shrader’s Trucking Company until his retirement.  He worked at Wittes Paint  Factory, Admirals in Galesburg, IL and was a prison guard at the Fort Madison Penitentiary.

 

He enjoyed his life in Cantril for thirty-two years and going to all the town functions.  He enjoyed going to the Catfish Place in Arbela, MO on Sundays.  He especially enjoyed his visits with his niece Almeda “Dottie” Huss.  He loved to watch and read westerns.

 

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Wellborn; one daughter, Sherry (Wayne) Chamblee of Burlington; three sons, William F (Janet) Bandy, Sr. of Burlington, Brian Bandy of Donnellson, Ed (Rhonda) Wellborn of CO; six grandchildren, James (Tiffany) Thien, Jerrid (Terika) Thien, Jenny Leis, William F Bandy, Jr., Emily (David) Cooper, Ian Wellborn; fifteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Janet Murphy of TX; one brother-in-law, Cliff Warren of Burlington; sister-in-laws, Darlene (Bill) Johansmeier and Marilyn Warren both of Burlington, Betty (Joe) Wheeler of Memphis, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one niece, one great-nephew and several aunts and uncles.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation or services.

Steven Christopher Timblin, 39, of Burlington, formerly of Seattle, WA, died at 4:35 PM Thursday, February 18, 2016, at his home.

 

Born July 2, 1976, in Tacoma, WA, he was the son of Darrold Timblin and Barbara Thompson.

 

He worked in painting and restaurant fields for a few years before becoming disabled.

 

He graduated from South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard, WA in 1994.

 

He grew up in Bremerton and Port Orchard, Washington. He moved to Burlington looking for a lower cost of living and to be near a friend of his.

 

Survivors include his mother and one brother, Jerry Timblin of Sedro-Woolley, WA.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation or services.

  1. B.L. Cratton, 75, of Burlington, died at 12:44 PM Saturday, February 27, 2016, at his home.

 

Born June 2, 1940, in Jericho, AR, he was the son of Eli and Albertha Smith Cratton. He married Dorothy Mae Swayzer and they later divorced. On August 13, 1976, he married Pearl Marie Ray in Galesburg, IL. She died April 6, 2005.

 

B.L worked for General Electric for 25 years. He also owned and operated Cratton’s Construction and previously worked for J.I. Case.

 

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving until March 1960.

 

He was a member and served as a Deacon at Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed eating at Jerry’s Main Lunch and Nappoli’s Pizza. He was an avid cubs fan and enjoyed watching T.V., especially, The Voice, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and How To Get Away With Murder; he also enjoyed spending his time sitting down by the river, drinking coffee and sitting outside.

 

Survivors his seven sons, Ray Swayzer of Burlington and Allen (Andrea) Swayzer both of Burlington, Bobby Cratton of Dubuque, Ricky (Leslie) Cratton of Burlington, Gerald (Cheryl) Bridges of San Diego, CA, James (Ronda) Redd of Burlington, and Nathaniel (Anne) Bridges of Knoxville, TN; eight daughters, Brenda Jenkins of Burlington, Joyce Aron and Cheryl McMillan both of Iowa City, Barbara Mims of Murphysboro, IL, Bertha Bradley of Keokuk, Lisa (George) McCarthy, Susan Bridges and LaToya (Nathan) Anderson all of Burlington; 54 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; twin brother, M.L. Cratton of Burlington; one niece and six nephews.

 

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by parents; granddaughter, Brittney L. Redd; and aunt, Ossie Mae Farmer.

 

Visitation will be Friday, March 4, 2016 from noon until  8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Cratton will be 1:00 PM Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Charles Mitchell and Rev. Nathaniel Bridges officiating and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory following the burial.

Mary Ann Anderson , 92, of Burlington, died at 7:50 AM Monday, February 29, 2016, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

 

Born June 4, 1923, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William Alfred and Marie Celesta Miller Bacher. On May 2, 1948, she married Dale Howard Anderson in Burlington. He died on May 8, 2009.

 

Mary Ann worked at the Glove Factory and was a homemaker.

 

She was a 1942 graduate from Burlington High School.

 

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.  She loved dogs and enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, walking, and fishing.

 

Survivors include brother, William Lewis Bacher of Lisbon, IA, two nieces and two nephews, and special friend, Donna Miller of West Burlington.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation.

 

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Anderson will be 2:00 PM Friday, March 4, 2016, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Pastor Jacquie Berlien officiating.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Bethany Lutheran Church.

Howard Wendell Hobbs, age 97, of Morning Sun, died Tuesday evening, March 1, 2016 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman.  The son of George Nicholas and Mary Etta Dotson Hobbs, he was born on January 3, 1919 in Morning Sun.  Howard married Betty Grace ‘Betts’ Baxter on June 18, 1950 in Morning Sun.  She preceded him in death on September 3, 1997.

 

Howard graduated from Morning Sun High School.  He served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II.  He had operated the Sinclair Station in Morning Sun and had worked as the school custodian and retired as rural mail carrier for the US Post Office in Morning Sun.

 

He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, a 70 year member of the Hays-Scott Post of the American Legion in Morning Sun, the Glenn Allen Post 5166 of the VFW in Wapello, and the National POW and current Commander of the Southeast Iowa Chapter.  He had been a township trustee, was honored as the Citizen of the Year in Morning Sun in 2003, and volunteered at the Veterans Hospital and the Blind Veterans Golf Tournament both for many years.  He enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones, and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

His family includes two sons, Nick Hobbs of Iowa City and Todd (Deborah) Hobbs of Norwalk; a daughter, Sharon Ball of Morning Sun; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betts; a grandson; a brother, Dallas Hobbs; and a sister, Pauline Jacobs.

 

The funeral ceremony for Howard Hobbs will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating.  Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery with military rites by the Louisa County Veterans Association.

 

Friends may call on Friday from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

 

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the American Legion Hays-Scott Post and the Centenary United Methodist Church.

JoAnn Wiele, 80, of Burlington, died at 7:53 AM Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the Genesis Medical Center East, Davenport.

 

Born March 15, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Oscar F. and Johanna J. Kupfer Wiele.

 

JoAnn was a school teacher and taught for the Gary, Indiana Community Schools for twenty-eight years.

 

She was a graduate of Burlington High School, and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree with a major in music education from Western Illinois University.

 

She was a member of the First United Church of Christ where she started playing the piano at the age of nine, later becoming the Director of Music and church organist in 1992.  JoAnn served as an Elder, member of the Consistory, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of Music and Worship.  She loved her cat Lucy.  She enjoyed reading, needlework, taking care of her indoor plants and her flower gardens.  She along with her sister Joyce and brother-in-law Clinton, enjoyed traveling from coast to coast and abroad.  They would leave every Christmas morning and drive for two days to go to Alabama to spend time with her nephews.

 

Survivors include one sister, Joyce Hagemann of Monmouth, IL; two nephews; one great-niece; one great-nephew; and several cousins.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother-in-law, Clinton.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, March 7, 2016 at First United Church of Christ.

 

The memorial service for Ms. Wiele will be 11:00 AM Monday, March 7, 2016, at First United Church of Christ with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Social Hall at the church following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Barbara J. Walters Logan, 86, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 9:28 AM Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living, Fort Madison, IA.

 

She was born on April 26, 1929 in Burlington, IA, the daughter of Fred F. And Dorothy L. Johnson Howe. On October 11, 1947 Barbara married George S. Walters in LaHarpe, IL. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1997. On March 18, 2001 she married Gail Logan in Las Vegas, NV. He preceded her in death on September 22, 2015.

 

Barbara was a 1947 graduate of the LaHarpe High School. She worked as a Receptionist for Dr. Carillo in Dallas city for many years as well as various other part-time jobs in the Dallas City area. She was a member of the Dallas City Senior Citizens, where she was the former President. Barbara was also a member of the Dallas City American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, First Christian Church of Dallas City and the River of Live Fellowship in Dallas City. She also volunteered with the RSVP.

 

She is survived by two sons, George (Marlene) Walters of Dallas City, Ricky Walters of Galesburg, one daughter JoAnn (Dan) Flaherty of Niota, IL, two step-children Sherrie (Terry Caldwell) Pence of Burlington, Dennis (Leysa) Logan of Dallas City, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Shirley Poulter of Beverly, IL and two brothers, Fred and Richard Howe both of Dallas City.

 

Barbara was preceded in death by her husbands, one infant daughter Dorothy June, and one sister Betty Brewer.

 

Services will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Doug Clark Officiating. Burial will follow at Harris Cemetery, Dallas City. A visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the River of Life Fellowship and the Lee County Hospice. Jean Eleanor Wick Murphy, of Burlington passed away peacefully on March 2, 2016.

 

She was born September 12, 1917, in Henry County, IA, she was the daughter of William E. and Catherine Cornick Binkly Wick. On January 20, 1940, she married Carl William Murphy in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He died in 1973.

 

Jean held several office positions in her working career.  She worked at Iowa Telephone Office in Mt. Pleasant, Des Moines Register and Tribune, Sears, Lehigh Leopold and the Catalog Department in J.C. Penney’s in Burlington.

 

She was Miss Iowa in 1937.  Jean was a wonderful, kind and loving woman.  Her favorite thing was to spend time with her family.  She will be missed.

 

She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Nancy A. Surland of Nebraska and  Jane E. (Steve) Strittmater of Davenport. She’s a much loved grandmother of Dawn (Tim) Edwards, Jeff (Sonya) Clark, Eric Cheek, Lee Cheek, Sean (Becky) Cheek and Jim (Diane) Cheek; and great-grandma of eight grandchildren and great-great-grandma of one and another one the way.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Don W. Wick, and one son-in-law, Gene Surland.

 

Friends may call on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home from noon until 5:00 PM.  The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Murphy will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 7, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

Kedarie Pierre Johnson, 16, of Burlington, died at 11:44 PM Wednesday, March 2, 2016, in Burlington.

 

Born July 5, 1999, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Ivan Parker and Katrina Johnson.

 

He was a Junior at  Burlington High School

 

He enjoyed spending his time dancing, particularly at Maple Leaf Center. He loved singing, listening to music, doing his hair, hanging out with friends, and surfing the Internet.

 

Survivors include his father, Ivan Parker of Chicago, IL; his mother, Katrina (Demetrius) Johnson of Burlington; one brother, Cedric Peterson of Burlington; one sister, Nijah Johnson of Chicago, IL; his maternal grandfather, Melvin Hudson of Chicago, IL; his maternal great-grandmother, Sylvia Hudson; his paternal grandmother, Kathy Parker of Chicago, IL; numerous cousins including, Kenya Hudson and Shanelle Hudson; and numerous aunts and uncles, including, Monique Johnson, Jerrell Johnson, Gary Hudson, Oterah Hudson, Pamela Hudson, Candace Hudson, Clifford Hudson, and Frank (Debra Rogers) Hudson.

 

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Sheree Johnson.

 

Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Burlington High School Carl Johannsen Gymnasium, where the family will receive friends.

 

The funeral service for Kedarie will be 6:00 PM Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Burlington High School Carl Johannsen Gymnasium with Pastor Nathan Williams officiating.   Burial will be in Restvale Cemetery, Alsip IL.

Mary  Moyers, 74, of West Burlington, died at 10:28 PM Saturday, March 5, 2016, peacefully at her home in West Burlington.

 

Born December 17, 1941, in Carman, IL, she was the daughter of Robert Earl and Myrtle Eldora Moyers.

 

Mary was a medical assistant at St. Francis Care Center and a bartender at the Iowa Tavern.

 

She graduated from Southeastern Community College.

 

Family was number one.  She enjoyed the time she spent with her family and making them custom keepsakes.  She enjoyed crocheting and keeping in touch with her family on facebook.

 

Survivors include four sons, Scott (Janet) Waterman of Clover, SC; Glenn (Mindy) Spiker of Burlington; Vernon (Vicki) Spiker of Oquawka, Dustin Spiker of West Burlington; many loved grandchildren & great-grandchildren; two daughters, Michelle (Bob) LeKander of Burlington, Angela (Jason) Ruble of Pittsfield, IL; two brothers, Glen Moyers, Martin Brockett; one sister, Cathy Waterman; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Myrtle Moyers, five brothers, Charles Brockett, Harve Brockett, Robert, Brockett, Harry Donald Brockett, William Moyers, two sisters, Ruby Norton & Ethel Moyers, one grandson, Steven Waterman, and multiple nieces and nephews.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be a private family service.  Burial will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Mary M. Jacob Dennis, 95, of West Burlington, IA passed away at 8:50 PM Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

She was born on June 25, 1920 in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of Jesse R. And Ruby Dean Brooks. On August 4, 1946 she married Dean Jacob in Carthage, IL. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1982. On June 21, 1984 she married John Dennis in Burlington. He survives.

 

Mary was a 1936 graduate of the Carthage High School. She then attended Western Illinois University before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. While in the Navy she served as a WAVE. After her service, Mary returned home and received a bachelors degree for teaching from the Carthage College. She taught in Hancock County for over 30 years, retiring in 1974 from the LaHarpe School District. Mrs. Dennis was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and was a member of the Community of Christ Church.

 

Survivors include her husband, John, one daughter, Carole (Dale) Warner of West Burlington, two grandchildren, Kelly (Randy) Fry, Matt Warner, three great-grandchildren, Madison and McKenzie Fry, and Tatum Warner, one brother, Chris (Soni) Brooks, one sister, Barbara Brooks, and many nieces and nephews.

 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Dean, four brothers, Dean, John, Jimmy, Danny, and one sister Dorothy.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 9, 2016 in the McKay Cemetery near Burnside, IL, with Ron Howell officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the McKay Cemetery and the Community of Christ Church. Contributions may be mailed to: The Mary M. Marilyn Ruth McGinity, 77, of New London, died at 11:25 AM Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

 

Born July 30, 1938, in Keokuk, IA, she was the daughter of Glenn Clarence and Lena Juanita Bailey Poland. She married Kenneth Sutcliffe Sr. They later divorced. On July 15, 1978, she married Melburn F. McGinity in Burlington, Iowa. He died on March 24, 1992.

 

Marilyn was a factory worker at Lamont. She worked in production at IAAP, Burlington Basket Factory, Printery in Bettendorf, and for the Burlington School System in food service.

 

She enjoyed reading, camping, her pets, being outside, family gatherings, going to the local Jet Stop with friends for coffee and watching Scooby Doo episodes on TV.  She loved her family.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley (Jim) Hancock of New London, Lena (Everett) Fye of La Harpe, IL, Tina (Tom) Smith of Burlington; one son, Kenny Sutcliffe of Mount Pleasant; three sisters, Delores (Bob) Witte of West Point, Karon Belcher of Burlington, Beverly (Frank) Myllo of Lakewood, CA; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Arthur, Tasha, Ariel, Ashley, Greg; four great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Isabell, Jennifer, Declan; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Clarence Glenn Poland, Charles Edward Poland,  three sisters,Liquita Joy Brown, Carol Rae Brissey and one infant, Shirley Marcene Poland.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 6:30 PM with the family receiving friends from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM Monday, March 7, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. McGinity will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Larry Dodds officiating.  Burial will be in Claypoole Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Eagles Club following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for P.A.W.S. No Kill Shelter in Fort Madison.

Richard “Rick” Smith, 69, of Burlington, died at 6:30 PM Sunday, March 6, 2016, at his home.

 

Born January 17, 1947, in Livingston, MT, he was the son of Harold and Mary Uhl Smith. On July 10, 1971, he married Mary Camilleri in San Francicsco, CA.

 

Richard worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for forty-one years until his retirement in 2007.

 

He graduated from Park County High School in Livingston, MT in 1965.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served on the USS Midway.

 

He moved to Burlington almost thirty years ago and always felt at home in Iowa.  He was a loving husband, enjoyed helping his family and was loyal to a fault.  He was an easy going man, great listener, enjoyed socializing with everyone in the neighborhood, and always gave his friends a hard time.  He enjoyed golfing at Schaefer’s, watching Jeopardy, the Iowa Hawkeyes, bowling, crosswords, inappropriate jokes, going on cruises, listening to country music and comedy on SiriusXM Radio. He loved his Chevy truck, fixing things and being in his garage (man cave).

 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Saverina; his mother Mary U. Smith of Livingston, MT; two sons, Jamie (Sarah) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Lance (Mindy) Smith of Fairfield; two daughters, Michelle (Steve) Fickel of Burlington, Dawn (Matt) Weir of Beaverdale; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Julie (Jim) Bowles of Chinook, MT; two brothers, Jack (Sherrie) Smith of Great Falls, MT, Jim (Lois) Smith of Livingston, MT; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until  7:00 PM Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The memorial service for Rick will be 11:00 AM Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Dan Dingus officiating and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory following the service.  Private family burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Ray Peter Christofferson, age 91 of Terre Haute, Illinois, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Sunday March 6, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, Illinois. He was born January 2, 1925 in Grand Junction, Iowa, the son of Sherman and Birdie Gleason Christofferson. He married Justina Johnson on October 25, 1952.

 

Mr. Christofferson was an army veteran of World War II, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He farmed most of his life in several areas and had lived in Terre Haute for the past 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and especially, the love of his family. He was a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints of Burlington, Iowa.

 

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Donna Stevenson of Fall Creek, WI, four grandchildren, Veronica (Don) Bundy of Stronghurst, IL, Bill Sutcliffe of Cumming, GA, Marcus (Kaci) Kious of Lorimor, IA, Christopher Kious of Tampa, FL, two great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, four sisters, Charlotte Dixon Of Galesburg, IL, Ruth Blyven of Genesse, ID, June Daily of Cabool, MO, Gerna Lewis of Branson, MO, four brothers, Phil Christofferson of Oquawka, IL, Bill Christofferson of Oneida, IL, Jim Christofferson of Gulfport, IL, Larry Christofferson of Portersville, CA, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Gloria Sutcliffe, five sisters and two brothers.

Gene Burr ‘Bud’ Hawkins, age 80, of Wapello, died Sunday evening, March 6, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.  The son of Burr Grover and Laura Mae Strawhacker Hawkins, he was born on December 23, 1935 in Oakville.  He married Cathy B. Tomson on May 1, 1965 in Wapello.

 

Bud graduated from Oakville High School.  He worked at J I Case in Burlington and retired in 1992.  Bud enjoyed fishing, farming, junking, tinkering, and simply being outdoors.  He had also done tire repair work in Oakville.

 

His family includes his wife, Cathy; four children, Patty Brown of Wapello, Brenda Sue Ealey & Billy Freitag of Wapello, Gary & Candi Hawkins of Morning Sun, and Tim Hawkins & Roberta Howell of Burlington; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Kokos of Joy, Illinois and Mary Ann Manning of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, Lester and Dean Hawkins both of Wapello; and several nieces and nephews and their families.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and other family members.

 

The funeral ceremony for Gene ‘Bud’ Hawkins will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating.

Benjamin “Ben” Marsh, 89, of Burlington, died at 6:30 PM Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

 

Born October 23, 1926, in Ft. Madison, he was the son of Benjamin Marvin and Irene Amanda Smutzer Marsh. On February 27, 1957, he married Dotti Murphy in Beekmantown, NY.

 

Ben was a truck driver. After he retired, he delivered prescriptions for Heritage Park Pharmacy for 15 years.

 

He attended high school in Dunlap, IL.

 

He was a U.S. Veteran, serving in the Navy, Marines, and Air Force.

 

He loved motorcycles, traveling, going on Caribbean cruises, reading, and cooking, but his biggest passion was for electronics.

 

Survivors include wife; one daughter, Rhonda (Don) Rush of Golconda, IL; one son, Randall J. (Vicki) Marsh of Peoria, IL; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Corky; and one sister, Clara; and one son, Ben Marvin Marsh III.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Betty Jean Bayne, age 85, of Marion, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha.  The daughter of Charles William and Bessie E. Blanchard Bates, she was born on March 26, 1930 in Burlington.  Betty married James Arthur Bayne on December 23, 1956 in Wapello.  He preceded her in death on October 4, 2005.

 

Betty grew up in Wapello and graduated from Wapello High School in 1948.  She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1952 with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education.  She received her M.A. degree in Elementary Education in 1960 also from the University of Iowa.  She taught for two years in Iowa City and a year in Solon before teaching in the Cedar Rapids Community Schools for 32 ½ years.

 

She was a member of the St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, the National T.T.T. Society since 1968, a Charter member of C.J. T.T.T. in Cedar Rapids, a member of Chapter K.J. P.E.O. in Villages, Florida, and memberships in Alpha Xi Delta for 60+ years, National Education Association and Iowa State Education Association both for 50+ years.  Betty enjoyed teaching, playing golf, the Iowa Hawkeyes, CUBS, her grandchildren, family, and Florida winters.

 

Her family includes a son, James & Cathy Bayne of Fairfax; three grandchildren, Jacob Charles Bayne, Adelaide Elizabeth Bayne, and William Robert Bayne; a niece, Karen & Ed Chabal of Washington; and a nephew, Brian Bates of Iowa City.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; a son, Robert William Bayne; and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Robert & Martha Bates.

 

The funeral ceremony for Betty Bayne will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating.  Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery.  The family will meet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 AM prior to the funeral on Friday and also at a luncheon gathering following the committal at the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church in Wapello.

Eugene “Sonny”  Higdon Jr., 68, of Burlington, died at 11:33 PM Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House.

 

Born September 28, 1947, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Eugene Harold and Dorothy Irene McCannon Higdon Sr. On June 7, 2008, he married Linda Fay Wright in Burlington.

 

Sonny was a truck driver for many years with several companies.

 

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

 

He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, dancing, vegetable gardening, and making homemade wine.  He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 10102, the Moose Lodge, the Burlington Gym. He enjoyed socializing with his friends and family.  His family was very important to him.

 

Survivors include his wife, Linda Fay Higdon of Burlington; one daughter, Tina (Brad) Holloway of Mediapolis; one son, Eric (Maureen) Higdon of Mediapolis; six granddaughters, Bethany, TeAnna,Kaitlin, Carly, Rylie, Theresa; seven grandsons, Dylan, Brad Jr., Nathan, K.C. Joe, Glenn, Kevin, John; five great-granddaughters, Madison, Khloe, Chloe, Lorelei, Anella; and six great-grandsons, Bryson, Kaiden, Marshall, Lane, Jase, Jay.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one wife.

Selma L. Hull, 89, of Burlington, died at 7:08 AM Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born March 12, 1926, in Peoria, IL, she was the daughter of Rudy and Clara Schlumpf Morey. She married Frank Jones Jr., they later divorced.  On December 5, 1960, she married John T. Hull Sr. He died February 4, 1998.

 

Selma worked in supplies at the Burlington Medical Center for several years, retiring in 1993.

 

She was a graduate of Peoria High School.

 

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.  She enjoyed sewing, bingo, her cats and loved spending time with her family and friends.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Hull of Burlington and Nancy Wheeler of Farmington, IL; three sons, John Jones of McAlester, OK, Frank  Jones III of Bartonville, IL, Kenny Jones of CO; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, five sisters, one daughter, Violet Lehmann and one grandson, Frank Jones IV.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Monday, March 14, 2016 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory.

David Allen Eppers, 67 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died 5:55 pm March 9, 2016 at the West Point Care Center, West Point, Iowa.  He was born March 14, 1948 at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Jack and Louise (Robinson) Eppers.  He was a Fort Madison High School graduate.  He worked over 30 years at Sheaffer Pen.  David loved woodworking and his dogs.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chester and Cora Robinson and his parents.

Rex Lee Morris, 72, of Burlington, died at 2:00 am Thursday, March 10, 2016, at his residence in Burlington.

 

Born July 24, 1943, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Cecil S. and Violet G. Craig Morris.

 

Rex worked as a carpenter and a handy man and enjoyed fixing things. He retired from Armor Dial Co. after more than a decade of service there. He worked for many years restoring historic homes in the Burlington area. He enjoyed the social gatherings at his home with his family while watching Fox News.

 

Survivors include two sons, Chad Ward and Michael Sourwine, both of Burlington, IA; two daughters, Amber Sourwine and Liesa Marie Morris, both of Burlington, IA, two brothers, Cecil Allen Morris of West Burlington, IA, and Garry Sumpter of Burlington, IA; two sisters, Sandra Eisenburger of King City, MO, and Nancy Hull of Burlington, IA; two granddaughters, Amiah Thompson and A’rayah Thompson; several nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Eugene “Gene” Breiner, 69, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of LaHarpe, IL, passed away at 6:52 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016 at the St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Gene was born on May 2, 1946 in LaHarpe the son of Loyd L. and Nancy Moore Breiner.

Mr. Breiner attended Northwestern High School, Sciota, IL. He spent most of his life working construction and also farmed. He enjoyed riding four wheelers, hunting, fishing and especially the time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Jessie (Eve) Breiner of Lakeland, FL, Adam (Angie) Breiner of Peoria, IL, one daughter, Nancy Nichols of Peoria, nine grandchildren, Adam Jr., Mateo, Malaki, Keeley, Jared, Samantha, Braxton, Jessica and Brendon, eleven sisters, Dorothy Plank, Pauline Jones, Virginia (Howard) Kerfoot, Wyvonne (Ike) Byers all of LaHarpe, Charlene Wilson, Lucille (Edward) Luton, Deanna Truelove all of Blandinsville, IL, Patricia (Lewis) Huston of New Boston, IL, Marilyn (Pat) Cahill of Burlington, IA, Jo (Don) Frye of Muscatine, IA and Joy Byers of Ottumwa, IA.

Jane Ellen Dittner Wilson, 63, of Burlington died Saturday, March 12, 2016 at her home.

Born November 18, 1952 in Burlington she was the daughter of Kenneth Frederick & Janet Caroline Gerdom Dittner.  She married Kenneth Wilson February 24, 1973 in Burlington.  They later divorced.

Jane was a 1971 graduate of Burlington High School.

Jane was an abstractor for 35 years employed with her father and later with Jack Carspecken and Bill Price in Des Moines County.

Jane grew up as a member of the First United Church of Christ.

She was a pianist and organist for 16 years at various churches in Burlington.  She was a member of Altrusa, U.C.T., Board of Planned Parenthood and secretary of Burlington Council of Churches.  Jane loved her family and friends, her churches and visiting the sick and shut-ins.  She was very proud of playing the 3 manual Moehler pipe organ at First United Church of Christ.  When she played services she played for praising God first and foremost.  She also loved writing books, Christian poetry and making cards.  She was a member of the NF2 Crew and Zoobies which are world-wide support groups for NF2, Neurofibromatosis Type 2.

Survivors include one daughter, Heidi E. Wilson, one granddaughter, Jasmine M. Beam, one grandson, Jason M. Beam Jr. all of Atkinson, IL,  and  one nephew, Darrin Dittner of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, David L. Dittner, one granddaughter, Justine Melinda Beam and good friend, Rev. Duane Cavins.

The funeral for Jane Wilson will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the First United Church of Christ with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Esther R. Ferguson, 88, of LaHarpe, IL went to be with the Lord at 4:13 PM Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

 

She was born on December 1, 1927 in Dixon, IL, the daughter of August and Anna Altpeter Suechting. On December 16, 1951 she married Raymond E. Ferguson in Basco, IL, he preceded her in death on April 1, 2009.

 

Esther was proud of her Christian Faith and her love for God was of utmost importance in her life. Early in life she attended the Carthage Lutheran College before marrying Raymond. She gave piano, voice and organ lessons for over 30 years at her home. Mrs. Ferguson enjoyed being a farm wife, where she would prepare meals for the men on the farm as well as perform the bookkeeping tasks. She was a member of the Durham GT Club for many years.

 

Survivors include four children, Larry (Jackie) Ferguson of Blandinsville, IL, Jerry (Julie) Ferguson, of Carthage, IL, Terry (Patti) Ferguson of LaHarpe, and Sherry Ferguson of LaHarpe, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren.

 

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, one son, Gary Ferguson, one brother, Erwin Suechting, and one sister, Irma Kitzky.

William “Bill” Larry Bowers, 54, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born December 1, 1961, in Burlington, he was the son of William and LaVilda Bowers. He married Chrisite Huston. They later divorced.  He later married Patricia Marks.

 

Bill worked in maintenance at the Comfort Inn and Suites, he previously owned his own garage door business.

 

He was of Methodist faith.  He enjoyed bowling, go kart racing, his two dogs, loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, always doing something, and had a great sense of humor.  He was a handyman and fixed just about anything.

Bonnie Jean Frerichs , 81, of West Burlington, died at 12:50 AM Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born December 3, 1934, in Keokuk, IA, she was the daughter of Edmund Jean and Bonnie Rose Danley Foulkes. She was raised by her aunt, Katherine Williams. On November 22, 1953, she married Ronald Herbert Frerichs in Burlington. He died January 13, 2012.

 

Bonnie worked for IRC for 11 years and Planned Parenthood. She was a 1953 graduate of Keokuk High School.

 

She enjoyed reading, cooking and loved her computer. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband. She adored her little dog Teddie.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Carole Ann (Michael) Farber of Tombstone, AZ, and Kathy Irene (John) Smith of West Burlington; four grandchildren, Jacey, Cindy, Jason, and Jessica, four great-grandchildren, Ethan, Zoey, Wyatt, and Ruby.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt, and one brother, Danny. As per Bonnie’s request cremation has been accorded.

 

There will be no formal visitation or services at this time.

John Charles Thomas, age 66 of Morning Sun, died Tuesday March 15, 2016 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.  The son of John Harold and Frances (Wright) Thomas, he was born February 28, 1950 at Burlington.  On July 23, 1971 he married Ann Ketchum at Downing, Missouri.  He was a 1968 graduate of the Morning Sun High School and attended Burlington Junior College for 2 years.  He was a lifelong trucker, driving for Harbison Trucking and Gabelines before going to work with his Dad in 1970 with Thomas Trucking.  He was a former school board member, former volunteer fireman, enjoyed Bishops Bombers Slow Pitch softball, NASCAR, camping and his grandchildren.

Survivors include:  one son, Chris and Allisen Thomas of Morning Sun; three daughters, Lori and Doug Harris of Morning Sun; Angela and Shad Singleton of Mora, Minnesota; Ranae and Jim Bryant of Morning Sun; 10 grandchildren, Darby, Kane, Johndree, Schae, Tate, Landry, Chloe, Caden, Cooper and Jaxon; four sisters, Shirley Kemper and Marie Wilson both of Wapello; Celia McElhinney of Morning Sun; Peggy Sever of Portland, Oregon; one brother Dan Thomas of Morning Sun.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jim and an infant sister.

Cremation has been accorded.  A memorial service will be Saturday March 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun, with Rev. Jon Evans and Rev. Jack Edmisson officiating.  Visitation will be held Friday from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun.  A general memorial has been established in his name.

Phillip Wayne Hillman Sr., 58, died peacefully at Iowa City Hospital and Clinics Friday, March 18, 2016.

Theoma Osborn, 77, of Burlington, died at 3:57 AM Saturday, March 19, 2016, at her home.

 

Born September 17, 1938, in Smithville, MS, she was the daughter of Andrew and Beulah Nails McKinney. On May 26,1957, she married George Osborn in Amory, MS.

 

Theoma was the heart of her family. She was a great wife, wonderful mother and exceptional friend to all.

 

She was a member of the Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship. She was a prayer warrior, an usher at her church and was treasurer for the usher board. She enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, traveling, reading, and she was always there for everyone.

 

Survivors include her husband; one son, Melvin Osborn of Burnsville, MN; five daughters, Belinda (William Walker II) Walker of Elk Grove, CA, Beneda Keener of Burlington, Marlene (Greg Carter) Osborn of Houston, TX, Denise Osborn of Burlington, Sandra Osborn of Burlington; seven grandchildren, William Walker III, Shon Osborn, Zachary Keener, Ezekiel Keener, Jacob Osborn, Allissa Osborn, Francesca Osborn; three great-grandchildren, Zhamara Walker, Zayda Walker, Ziara Walker; one brother, Theodis (Earnestine) McKinney of Smithville, MS.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Larry Osborn, one sister, Elaine Nichols, and one brother, Jarvis McKinney.

 

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Friday, March 25, 2016 at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Osborn will be 1:00 PM Friday, March 25, 2016, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship with Elder Lawrence L. Manson officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the burial.

Charles “Jim” Byars, 76, of Burlington, died at 5:40 AM Monday, March 21, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born July 31, 1939, in Blackstock, SC, he was the son of Curtis N. and Lillie Elizabeth Moore Byars Sr. On December 16, 1961, he married Leona M. Becker at the Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, CA.

 

Jim worked for I.A.A.P. for 25 years as a millwright. He owned and operated Jim’s Lock & Safe which he founded in 1977.

 

He graduated from Chester High School in Chester, SC.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in Naval Aviation on the U.S.S. Ranger and other aircraft carriers.

 

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was a 32nd degree Mason being a member of the Des Moines Lodge #1, Malta Lodge #318, and Patriot Lodge #650; the York Rite bodies: Iowa chapter #1, Zerubbabel Council #22, St. Omer Commandary #15; as well as Scottish Rite. He was a member of Elks #84, VFW Post 10102, Moose Lodge #579 and Shriners.

 

He was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending his time tinkering with antique gas engines, attending Old Threshers, hunting, fishing, attending auctions, feeding the birds, and outsmarting the squirrels.

 

Survivors include his wife, Leona; two daughters, Susan Mullins of Burlington and Michelle (Mark) Richards of Danville; one son, Mike Byars of Burlington;  five grandchildren, Candice Mullins, Brooke Byars, Curtis Richards, Trent Richards, and Miranda Richards; three great-grandchildren, Abbigail, Jacob, and Holly; one brother, Elmer Byars of Lake Havasu City, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, and one stillborn son.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Masonic Memorial Service Friday, March 25, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Byars will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 26, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Debra L. Kinney officiating and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. V.Maxine Hake, age 88, formerly of Muscatine and Wapello, and currently of Rogersville, Missouri, died Friday, March 18, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.  The daughter of John and Mary Saultz Ellis, she was born in Port Louisa, Iowa.  Maxine married Edward Hake on July 5, 1944 in Muscatine County, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on December 14, 2008.

 

Maxine was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family.  She attended Glad Tidings Church in Muscatine.

 

She is survived by five children, Gary and the late Pat Hake of Rogersville, Sam (Loreta) Hake of Seymour, Missouri, Nancy and the late Ronnie Cummins of Rogersville, Randy (Roxie) Hake and Russ (Cindy) Hake both of Muscatine; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 9 great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; 4 sisters; and 2 brothers.

 

The family will gather and meet friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday, March 25, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with the funeral ceremony following at 1:00 PM with Rev. Sharon Phillips officiating.  Burial will then follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Muscatine.

Mary Ann Strausbaugh, 66, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 6:01 PM Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Roseville Rehabilitation and Health Care, Roseville, IL where she had resided the past 3 ½ years.

 

She was born on February 2, 1950 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Carl W. and Mildred Sell Strausbaugh.

 

Mary Ann was a graduate of the Carthage High School. She was a lifelong resident of LaHarpe. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and crafts.

 

Mary Ann is survived by two nephews, Kevin Strausbaugh of Burlington, IA, Bill Strausbaugh, one niece, Heather Cassidy of Alaska, several great and great-great nieces and nephews, one aunt, Mary Armstrong of Chillicothe, IL and numerous cousins.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Linda Strausbaugh, three brothers R.A., Gary, Carl Strausbaugh Jr., and her significant other, Odie Downs.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, April 1, 2016 in the LaHarpe Cemetery, with Rev. Rick Goettsche officiating. Lillian Martha Crabill, 93, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 9:35 PM Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, IA. Lillian was born on July 18, 1922 in the Durham Township, the daughter of Henry Wilson and Frances “Flossie” Melvin Reed. On March 14, 1945 she married William Crabill. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2012.

 

Lillian lived most of her life in the LaHarpe area, with the exception of a few months in Santa Fe, NM during her husband Bill’s assignment at Los Alamos. She was a 1941 graduate of the LaHarpe High School and a 1944 graduate of the Burlington Protestant Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse for many years at the LaHarpe Davier Hospital. During this time she also helped her husband administer their two Crabill Shelter Care Homes.

 

She was a faithfull member of the LaHarpe Christian Church her entire life, and served there in many capacities over the years. Her love of the Lord, her family and many friends were central in her life. Lillian was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Hasted Sunny Seniors, and the LaHarpe Senior Citizens. She enjoyed helping with the Share Food Program.

 

Survivors include five children: Dick Crabill of Joplin, MO, Bonnie (Alan) Stewart, of LaHarpe, Cathy (Reinhard) Bergmann of Carthage, IL, Becky Crabill of Carthge, and Dian (Becky) Crabill of Springfield, IL; grandchildren: Mark and Matt Crabill, Meri Rodgers, Shannon and Shawn Stewart, Ryan and Eric Bergmann and Sadie Crabill; 17 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren and six step great-great-grandchildren; one sister JoAnne Greenman of Crystal Lake, IL.

 

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bill, Stillborn son, Howard Robert, three brothers, Harold, James and Lewis Reed, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Crabill.

Helen Dorothy Luttenegger, age 89, of Burlington and formerly of Kingston and rural Oakville, died Sunday evening, March 27, 2016, at the Bickford Assisted Living in Burlington.  The daughter of Mearl and Katherine Binder Conn, she was born on April 28, 1926 in Burlington.  Helen married Leon Luttenegger on January 1, 1950 in Burlington.  He preceded her in death on June 21, 1989.

 

Helen graduated from Burlington High School.  She was a homemaker and farm wife and had also worked at National Research and IRC both of Burlington and PRP in Mediapolis.  She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning, baking especially for holidays, and doing cross stitch.

 

Her family includes three daughters, Cindy Klenk of Mediapolis, Flora & Bob Metzger of Yarmouth, and Rose & Curtis Schmitz of Burlington; 8 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon; a son, Dennis; and a sister, Darlene.

 

The funeral ceremony for Helen Luttenegger will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis with Rev. Anthony “Tony” Connelly, 37, of Burlington, died at 4:30 PM Saturday, March 26, 2016, in Burlington.

 

Born December 18, 1978, in Burlington, he was the son of David Connelly and Suzan Kay Carman.

 

Tony was a cook at Carlos O’Kelly’s and Lindo Mexico.

 

He enjoyed attending U.F.C. fighting events and desired to be involved someday. He also enjoyed going mushroom hunting and fishing, but most of all he loved his nieces and nephews.

 

Survivors include his mother; two sisters, Angela (Tony) VanOrder and Emily Carman both of Burlington; his maternal grandmother, Mary Jo (Bernie) Oltman of Burlington; one uncle, Rod Schramm of Burlington; two nieces, Kelsie and Adalyn; two nephews, Parker and Jackson; several cousins; and many close friends who were welcome in the family.

 

He was preceded in death by his father; one uncle, Mike Schramm; two paternal grandmothers; and one maternal grandfather.

Kahlan John Ray, 25, of Burlington, died at 5:35 AM Saturday, March 26, 2016, in Burlington

 

Born April 22, 1990, in Burlington, he was the son of Warren Tucker Garrett “Tuck” and Michelle Ray.

 

Kahlan was an auto mechanic.

 

He graduated from Burlington High School in 2008. He furthered his education at U.T.I. of Chicago in 2009.

 

Kahlan was very creative and a mid-century modern enthusiast. He enjoyed working with wood, mostly reclaiming walnut; he put together a woodworking shop in his home. He also enjoyed being outdoors, rock hunting, skateboarding, disc golfing, riding bikes, attending outdoor music festivals, listening to local bands with his friends, and bargain hunting at flea markets.

 

Survivors include his parents; special friend, Lyzz Inghram; four sisters, Shawna (Dan) Purdum, Ingrid (Jaime) Gerling and Brooke (Justin) Marland  all of Burlington, and Taletha (Nick Koett) Garrett of West Burlington; one brother, Seth (Sam Hellberg) Garrett of Burlington; several aunts and uncles; many nieces and nephews; and his maternal grandfather, John Ray of Galesburg, IL.

 

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother; his paternal grandparents; and one uncle

F. Dot Peck, age 96, of Wapello and formerly of rural Oakville, died Monday morning, March 28, 2016, at the Wapello Specialty Care. She was born at Eudora, Missouri to Ernest and Martha Wynkoop Acuff on March 8, 1920. She graduated from Marshfield High School in Missouri.  Dot married Donald Peck on April 26, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant.  He preceded her in death on September 10, 2004.

 

She worked as a nurse’s aid at Klein’s Hospital in Burlington for 11 years.  Dot raised a big garden, always had chickens, and loved flowers.  She and her husband spent winters in Zapata, Texas for 26 years and they also visited Jamaica 11 times where her sister was a missionary.  They lived on a farm Northeast of Oakville over 63 years.  She attended the Oakville Community Bible Church formally the Church of God Holiness.

 

Her surviving family includes a daughter, Carol & Kenny Gerst of Wapello; a son, Ernest & Harla Peck of Wapello; 6 grandchildren, Kenna & Jim Baber, Denise & Stan Wood, Janean & Bill McDowell, Dawn & Tim Wagner, Darrin Peck, and DeeDee & Scott Pfeiffer; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and their families.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; 2 brothers; and 3 sisters.

 

The funeral ceremony for Dot Peck will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Oakville Community Bible Church with Pastor Jim Ruberg and Pastor Steven

Lola Jean Eberhard, 57, of West Burlington, died at 11:54 AM Monday, March 28, 2016, at her home.

 

Born April 23, 1958, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Julius Ralph and Betty Lou Hass Eberhard.

 

Lola was an Administrative Control Clerk at the Burlington Medical Center for 16 years. She also worked in home health care.

 

She loved animals, specifically horses and cats; she always had a cat. She enjoyed spending her time reading, being outdoors and spending time with her close friends.

 

Survivors include her brother, Barry (Lori) Eberhard of Waterloo; one sister, Donna Eberhard of Phoenix, AZ; and two nephews, Brandon and Benjamin.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Edward Eberhard.

 

The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, Monday at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.
