Gary Lee Girtman, 69, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, passed away at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on November 16, 1946 in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of John and Verna (Priva) Girtman. On March 23, 1969, he married Gloria Saunders. They were married for 47 years.

Gary was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Southeastern Community College. He retired from General Electric, where he worked for 38 years. Gary also worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and Siemens in Texas. He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria; one son, Nathan Girtman of Visalia, California; and one granddaughter, Isabella Girtman of Visalia, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Lewis Lawrence.

Per his wishes, his body has been cremated. Burial will be held at a later date.

Memorial Gardens in Arlington, Texas is in assisting the family with arrangements.

 

Joseph G. Denning, 42, of Forest Park, died at 10:43 PM Friday, March 25, 2016, at the Rush Oak Park Hospital in Oak Park.

 

Born November 19, 1973, in Burlington, he was the son of James Anthony and Renee Suzanne Vandiver Denning.

 

Joseph was a Emergency Room Trauma Nurse.  He enjoyed teaching his fellow nurses.

 

He was a 1992 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1997 graduate of Southeastern Community College with his registered nurses degree.

 

He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and the American Nursing Association.  He enjoyed interior decorating, and collecting things.  He enjoyed animals especially his dogs, and spending time with his family and friends.

 

Survivors include his father, Jim Denning of Burlington, his mother, Renee Denning of Burlington; his partner, Anastasio Alcazar of Forest Park, IL; one brother, Mike (Jessica) Denning of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Darlene (Brian) Lindner of Somers; one uncle, John Rahn of Marion; several cousins, one nephew, two nieces, one great nephew and two great nieces.

 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 1, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Denning will be 9:30 AM Saturday, April 2, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.

 

Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and the American Nursing Association.

John “Butch” Parker, 66, of West Burlington, died at 3:23 PM Friday, April 1, 2016, at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born October 9, 1949, in Burlington, he was the son of John Kenneth and Dorothy Lucille Davis Parker. He married Sharon Calhoun in Burlington.  They later divorced.

 

John was a car detailer and auto mechanic at Shottenkirk, Deery, and Honda.  He also worked at Montgomery Ward, Brockway, and Carl A. Nelson .

 

He graduated from Bushnell-Prairie City High School in 1969.

 

He was of Methodist faith.  He enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, fishing, Chicago Cubs baseball, Iowa Hawkeye sports, Chicago Bears, NASCAR fan, watching television, and shooting pool. John loved spending time with his friends and family making them laugh and smile, he enjoyed saying “I have not eaten in three days”.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Kaylyn Parker of West Burlington; one sister, Sharon (Robert) Whitham of Burlington; two nieces, Tonya (Jamey) Hartman, Tammy Dingman; one nephew, Brian Whitham; and several great nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, step-father, grandparents, one great niece, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, April 4, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Parker will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating.  A time of food and fellowship will be at the Eagles’ Club following the service. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date .

Debbie Hobbs, age 56 of Mediapolis, died Friday April 1, 2016 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  The daughter of Paul and Barbara (Dalton) Ryan, she was born September 24, 1959 in Los Angeles, CA.  She married Robert Hobbs.  She worked for 16 years at the Morning Sun Care Center.

She is survived by her husband of Mediapolis; one son Duran Ryan of Morning Sun and one daughter Angie Ryan of Mediapolis; three grandchildren and four sisters.

 

She was preceded in death by her parent and one brother.

 

Cremation has been accorded.  A celebration of life gathering is pending. A general memorial has been established in her name.  Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis is assisting the family with arrangements.

David G. Butts, 69, of West Burlington, died Friday, March 18, 2016, in Saint Augustine, FL.

 

Born September 2, 1946, in Ft. Madison, he was the son of Howard Glenn and Betty Jean Boyles Butts. On February 27, 1988, he married Barbara Kay Rowe in Burlington.

 

David worked for Federal Mogul in the Champion Spark Plug Division for 39 years.

 

He graduated high school in 1964 in the first graduating class of West Burlington.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

 

He was a member of VFW 10102, Abate of Iowa, NRA, and Wildlife Forever. He was an avid sportsman, camping in the RV, traveling, loved his Harley’s and spending time with friends and family.

 

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Brendan Butts, Damian Butts both of Burlington, David (Sheri) Beckham of Gulf Breeze, FL, Michael (Amy) Beckham; one daughter, Lisa Miller of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Sandra (Ken) Carpenter of Palm Coast, FL, Bonita (Jerry) Cokel of Media, IL, Karen West of Burlington, Linda (Randy) Carpenter of Carman, IL,  Margie (Kim) King of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Butts.

 

The memorial visitation for Mr. Butts will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with  full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Jim R.  Barton, 65, of Burlington, died at 8:38 AM Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born February 9, 1951, in Washington State, he was the son Norma Malone. On October 22, 1999, he married Vicki  Brueck in Burlington.

 

Jim was a truck driver with West Side Transportation in Cedar Rapids.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from 1969 until retirement in 1993.

 

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was a Washington Redskins fan; he enjoyed vacations with his family, watching wrestling on T.V., and playing Blackjack with his wife at Riverside Casino.

 

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Barton of Burlington; one daughter, Jackie Barton of Wever; his mother, Norma Malone of Sacramento, CA;  one step-son, David Uhl of Burlington; one step-daughter, Elizabeth Uhl of Burlington; two grandsons, Xavier Strause of Burlington and Harlan Bell of Wever; three sisters; and two brothers.

 

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jennifer Barton.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until  2:00 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at  Prugh’s Chapel.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Barton will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Prugh’s Chapel with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Officiant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Patty Jo Siefken, 77, West Burlington died Sun 4/3 at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center.

She is survived by two sons, Kevin of Burlington and Terry of West Burlington, 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Georgia E. Nupp, 78, of Burlington, died at 7:15 AM Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the Burlington Care Center.

 

Born July 29, 1937, in California, MO, she was the daughter of John W. and Iva Lee Kirkendoll Parish.

 

Georgia was a bartender for twenty eight years.

 

She was of Baptist Faith.  She enjoyed playing bingo, going to auctions and garage sales.  She was an avid sports watcher and was a Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Cubs and Miami Heat fan.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Nupp of Burlington; three sons, Richard E. Young of Bradenton, FL, Terry L. (Tammy) Young, of El Paso, TX, John (Jackie) Nupp of Muscatine; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and Special Friend, Carl “Red” Ancell of Burlington.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, one grandson, Joesph, one great-grandson, J.J. James Junior, and one half brother, David Lee Allen.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 8, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mike Bowman, 55, of Burlington, died at 6:12 PM Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his home.

 

Born November 30, 1960, in Burlington, he was the son of Richard Gordon Bowman and Earlene Francis James Bowman-Costilla . On August 17, 2010, he married Christina Weigel in Las Vegas, NV.

 

Mike previously worked as a cook for Big Muddy’s and security for Catfish Bend Casino.

 

He liked playing video games and the organ. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and his cat Pickles. He was an active supporter of SS John & Paul Catholic Church.

 

Survivors include his wife; one brother, Mark (Kelly) Bowman, of Burlington; four sisters, Sherri (Butch) Adams of Carman, Darla (Joe) Doss of Burlington, Lisa Hand of Carman, Dana Hensley of Aledo; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Leonora “Lee” O. Pilgram, 89, Burlington died Wed 4/6 at the Great River Hospice House.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Terry Callahan of Burlington and Riche Rahn of Canastoga, NY, a sister, Doris Spicknall of Burlington, 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tue 4/12 in Lunning Chapel with burial in the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.  The family will receive friends from 1230 until the time of service.

Sally Jo (Shoemate) Luder, 59, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 11:21 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, IA.

She was born in Carthage, IL on May 13, 1956 the daughter of John H. and Delores E. Krow Shoemate. On November 3, 1979, she married Dorn J. Luder at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Nauvoo, IL.

Mrs. Luder was a 1974 graduate of the Dallas City High School. She loved to do crossword puzzles, put puzzles together, puzzle books, and was an avid reader. She loved to spoil her grandchildren. Sally worked many years at the Dallas City Elementary School and the former Woodlands. She also served as an election judge, committee member of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the NRA, Dallas City Rural Fire Department and a volunteer at The John Shoemate Memorial Kids Fishing Tournament.

Besides her husband, survivors include, her mother, Delores of Dallas City, one daughter, Jessica (Alan) Menke of Salem, IA, four grandchildren, Emma, Nicholas, Addison, and Jillian, one sister, Peggy Newberry of Dallas City, three brothers, Jeffrey (Becky) Shoemate of Ft. Madison, IA, James (Teresa) Shoemate of Burlington, IA and John (Angela) Shoemate of Fort Madison, two sister-in-laws, Ruth Ann (JB) Smith of Galesburg, IL and Charleen (late Jim) Peterson of Dallas City, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sally was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley and Rev. Jim Luder officiating. Burial will be held at Harris Cemetery, Dallas City. Rebecca L. Rettig, 59, of Iowa City, IA passed away at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City.

She was born on October 10, 1956 in Fort Madison, IA the daughter of William G. and Martha Bell Bice Rea. In July of 1977 she married Gary J. Rettig. They later divorced.

Rebecca grew up in Niota, IL and was a 1974 graduate of the Nauvoo/ Colusa High School, Nauvoo, IL. She worked at Methode in Carthage, IL for many years and also cared for the elderly. She had resided in Iowa City for the past 16 years.

Survivors include, one daughter, Lisa (Evan) Sara of Dallas, TX, one step-granddaughter, Ally Sara, two brothers, Rick Rea of Niota, IL and Roger Rea of Evington, Virginia and two sisters, Rhonda Chamlee of Jonesboro, AR and Rita Renshaw of Burlington, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Roxanna Petty.

Ivan “Kenny” Thomas, 80, Gladstone died Wed 4/6 at the Great River Hospice House.

He is survived by his wife, Phillis, a son, Andrew of Burlington, 3 daughters, Marguerite Fehseke of Corydon, IA, Debbie Bailey of Oquawka and Susan Swanson of West Burlington, a brother, Richard of Hopkins, SC, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Mon 4/11 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Lunnings.

Richard  P. “Dick” Anderson, 82, of Burlington, died at 6:17 AM Saturday, April 9, 2016, at his home.

 

Richard was born April 3, 1934, in Burlington, the son of George Hamilton and Esther Susan McCaleb Anderson.  He attended Salter Elementary School, Horace Mann Junior High School, and Burlington High School, graduating in June, 1952.  He attended the Burlington Junior College and graduated in June 1954 with an AA degree.  He went on to the University of Iowa to study Commercial Art, graduating in June, 1956, with a BA degree. He later obtained his Master of Arts Degree also from the University of Iowa. In September 1956, he enlisted in the U.S Army Reserves and was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, with the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1956 to 1958.  During most of his enlistment years he was in charge of troop education serving as Training NCO.  After his honorable discharge in 1958, he shortly went to work as a Commercial Artist for the Winegard and Kirkwood Companies in Burlington.

 

In March of 1960 he went back to the University of Iowa to obtain a teaching certificate.  In the fall of 1961, he was hired by the Burlington School District as the BHS Art Teacher.  He remained in that capacity for 35 years, retiring in June of 1996.  In September of 1962 he began teaching oil painting for the evening Adult Education program which he taught for over 20 years.  It was during one of his Adult Education classes that the idea for the Burlington Art Guild was born.  Mr. Anderson was a Charter Member of that guild.  For several years he also taught painting at the Art Center; and after his retirement, Calligraphy at Stoermers Arts and Crafts Store.  In 1968 Mr. Anderson was named the Outstanding Young Educator of the Year by the Burlington Jaycees, an award he coveted.

 

On August 15, 1970, he married Arlet Lingenfelter at the Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington.

 

Mr. Anderson was a member of Wings of Praise Fellowship Church in West Burlington where he served as an usher and participated in the puppet ministry.  Prior to being a member at Wings of Praise, he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, where he was baptized as a youngster.  For many years, he sang tenor in its church choir, taught a 6th grade Sunday School Class, served as Sunday School Superintendent, and for 23 years was Youth Counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship.  He was also a member of the Concerned Christians in Education and the Des Moines County Retired School Personnel.

 

In the fall of 2004 Mr. Anderson developed and taught a high school art class part-time at the Great River Christian School.  He continued teaching there for 10 years. Other interests included  traveling to all 50 states, all Canadian provinces, many foreign countries and cruises; his church; following the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams, and the many activities of his grandchildren.  He loved and enjoyed his family very much, as they were a very important part of his life.  Mr. Anderson was always excited about Christmas and played Santa Claus for individuals, groups and churches, even his family, for over 50 years, an activity that brought him immense joy.  Many churches in Burlington and the surrounding area have a chalk drawing of Christ on their wall which Dick drew during a ‘chalktalk’ performance.

 

Besides his wife, Mr. Anderson is survived by one son, Todd R. Anderson of Burlington, and one daughter Amy M. Shepherd, also of Burlington, one brother Donald G. (Beulah) Anderson of Prosper, Texas, 6 grandchildren, Austin, Blake, Callie, and Cameron Anderson, Ellie and Mason Shepherd of Burlington as well as nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceding in death by his parents.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, April 11, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Anderson will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with  Brenda Distelhorst officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory following the burial.

 

Memorials have been established for the Wings of Praise Fellowship Church and the Parkinson’s Association of South East Iowa.

Edward D. ‘Eddie’ Gerst, Jr., age 61, of rural Wapello, was found deceased Saturday evening, April 9, 2016, at his residence.  The son of Frances Annabell Lee and Edward S. Gerst, Sr., he was born on September 2, 1954 in Burlington.

 

He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1972 and from Southeastern Community College in 1995 with a degree in Criminal Justice.  Eddie worked at the Gypsum Plant from 1972 until 1993.  He had been married to Beverly Johnson and Vicky Kiesel.

 

Eddie was affiliated with the First Baptist Church in Mediapolis.  He was an accomplished 6 and 12 string guitar player along with the fiddle and banjo.  He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, Sudoku, and crossword puzzles.

 

His family includes his father Edward Gerst, Sr.; a brother, Anthony ‘Tony’ & Viktoria Gerst of Wapello; a sister, Rebecca Brown of West Burlington; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.  He was preceded in death by his mother.

 

The family will meet friends on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the funeral ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 10:00 AM with Pastor Dan Baker officiating.  Cremation burial will follow at the Edwards Cemetery at Oakville.

 

A memorial fund has been established.

Hugo “Hick” Thie, age 93 of Mediapolis, died Saturday April 9, 2016 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  The son of Sam and Ruby Thie, he was born June 2, 1922 in Mediapolis.  On November 17, 1950 he married Mildred “Shorty” Pilling in Fairfield, Iowa.  He was a 1941 graduate of the Mediapolis High School and attended Southeastern Community College where he played baseball and basketball.  He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in the Asiatic area from 1944-46 and was awarded a Purple Heart.  Hick owned and operated Thie’s Food Market in Mediapolis for many years and was an accomplished meat cutter, proud of the fact he kept all ten fingers through the years. He was a member of the Harmony Bible Church in Danville.  Hick enjoyed all sports and the outdoors, growing flowers and vegetables.

Survivors include:  one son, Brent and Peggy Thie of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, David and Lois Hollingsworth, Dennis and Kathryn Hollingsworth, Doug and Kim Hollingsworth, Marcus Thie, Cody Thie, Steffi Thie; five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister Marguerite, one brother Sam, and a daughter Joyce.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, with Dan Dingus officiating.  Interment will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery.  Friends may call on Wednesday from 9-1 prior to the service at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home.  The family will meet with friends from noon until 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Harmony Bible Church.

Katherine J. “Kay” Ball, 88, of New London, died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Pleasant Manor in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Pastor Aimee Goldmeyer will officiate.  Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, rural New London.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 PM before the service.  A memorial has been established to the New London Presbyterian Church.

 

Shirley Ann Beckel, 85, of Silvis, Illinois and formerly of New London, died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Aspen Rehab and Health Care in Silvis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Pastor David Mixon will officiate.  Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, rural New London.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, prior to the service.  A memorial has been established to the New London United Methodist Church.

 

Dr. John R. Peterson, 88, Burlington died Sat 4/9 at the Great River Hospice House.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta. 2 daughters, Maia Ingle of Charleston, SC & Nena Flatt of Fishers, IN, a brother, Walter of Burlington and 2 grandchildren.

Barbara Jean Berlet, 86, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 6:55 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe.

She was born on September 18, 1929 in LaHarpe the daughter of Cecil W. and Viola R. Helmers Sutton. Barb married Bill Berlet in 1950. He preceded her in death on November 3, 2011.

She was a 1947 graduate of the LaHarpe High School. Barb worked as bookkeeper for many years at Gene & Bev’s Grocery Store and Country Companies both in LaHarpe and as a custodian at the LaHarpe United Methodist Church. She also served as Treasurer of the LaHarpe Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet L. Humphrey of LaHarpe, Kathleen Dion of Northville, MI, Patricia Berlet of LaHarpe, two sons, David Berlet and Chris Berlet both of LaHarpe, two grandsons, Tony Hanks of Plymouth, MI and Jeremy Berlet of Seattle, WA, several step-grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several step-great-grandchildren.

Barb was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the LaHarpe Cemetery with Nate McCarter officiating. James Thomas Hingst, 81, of Burlington, IA died at 8:45 PM Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

 

Born December 22, 1934, in Burlington, IA he was the son of John Albert Jr. and Helen Loretta Brown Hingst. On October 1, 1955, he married Janet R. Haas in Fort Madison.

 

Jim worked for Champion Spark Plug for 32 years.  He retired in 1991.  He then worked at Hy-Vee in floral and delivery for 21 years.

 

He graduated in 1954 from Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College.

 

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1955 until 1958, with the 98th Air Fueling Squad in Lincoln, NE and in England, Newfoundland, and the Azores.  He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.

 

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was a charter member of U.A.W. Local #1237 and charter member of Three I Credit Union.  He was a diehard University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Los Angeles Dodgers fan.  He loved gardening and ceramics.

 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Janet; one daughter, Nannette Marie (Clark) Griffin of Fort Madison; one son, Thomas (Tammie) Hingst of Avon, IN; one granddaughter, Caitlin and two grandsons, John and Joseph; three step-grandchildren, Michael, Sara and Matthew; one brother, Richard (Patricia) Hingst of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, April 17, 2016, at  Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory in Burlington.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Hingst will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 18, 2016, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory following burial.

Kenneth Neal Hartman, 93, of Burlington, died at 6:10 PM Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born April 15, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Jesse Herbert and LaVerna Margaret Whitaker Hartman. On September 6, 1947, he married Ruth Catherine Reusch in Burlington.  She died January 20, 2011.

 

Kenny worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant.  Along with his wife, he owned and operated Ken’s Korner Grocery, worked at Coast to Coast/True Value Hardware and Rolling Rock Ranch selling horse trailers and boarding horses and vehicle storage.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II on the U.S.S. Baltimore serving six months in the Atlantic and 2 1/2 years in the Pacific.  President Roosevelt was on his ship during his tour of the Pacific.

 

He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.  He was a past member of Moose Lodge #579, Knights of Columbus #568, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, Des Moines County Riding Club, and Black Hawk Auto Restorers.  He loved horses, horse shows and classic cars.  He enjoyed attending theTri-State Rodeo and helped at the Special Kids Rodeo.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Lala (Hartman) O’Hara of Burlington; two sons, Neal Thomas Hartman of Burlington, and Larry (Krista) Hartman of Burlington; one grandson, Nickolas Webber Hartman; several nieces and nephews; and a grafted in daughter, Sally Lackey of Centralia, IL.

 

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2016, at  Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Wanda Jean Harris, 86, of Jefferson City, Missouri formerly of Morning Sun, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 15, 2016, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri.

 

She was born November 1, 1929, in Wapello, Iowa, the daughter of the late John Franklin and Mary Olive (Masters) Hupp.

 

She was united in marriage on August 26, 1951, to Thomas Burdette Harris who preceded her in death on November 25, 1980.

 

Wanda worked as a school cook as well as helping her husband on their farm as a homemaker.

 

She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun, Iowa.  In her earlier years she enjoyed square dancing with her husband.  She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing cards, and cooking for her family.

 

Survivors include: two children, Patricia Thomas, Morning Sun, IA; Bradley (Linda) Harris, Jefferson City; five grandchildren, Nicole Yancey, Heath Thomas, Brittiny Taylor, Weston Harris, Julie Harris; and 5 great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, David Harris; two sisters, Edna Hinds and Frances Robertson; a brother, John Hupp; and a son-in-law, James Thomas.

 

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2016, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home in Jefferson City, MO.

 

Additional visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Wednesday with funeral services following at 11 a.m. at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun, Iowa.

 

Burial will be in Elmwood Gardens Cemetery in Morning Sun, Iowa.

Dave Bowman, 61, of Burlington, died at 5:15 PM Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

 

Born November 9, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Harold Joseph and Esther May McGinity Bowman. On June 15, 1977, he married Shirley Scearcy in Burlington. She died November 27, 2003.

 

He worked for various company doing auto body paint work. While living in Oregon he was self-employed doing auto body paint work.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from 1974 until 1975.

 

He was an avid Minnesota Vikings Fan. He enjoyed fishing, playing and watching golf, gardening with his wife, camping, working on cars, and especially spending time with family.

 

Survivors include one son, Ruben Bowman, Sr. of Burlington; two daughters, Malisa (Chad) Scott and Julie Bowman both of Burlington; one step-daughter, Anita Nichols of Burlington and four other step-children; four brothers, Richard Bowman, Sr. of Burlington, Robert Bowman, Sr. of New London, Harold Bowman, Jr. of Burlington, and Jerry Bowman, Sr. of Burlington; one sister, Margaret Krieger of Burlington; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several step-grandchildren.

 

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jack, and one step-son.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The memorial service for Mr. Bowman will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with Reverend Dean Graber officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Michele Rae Box Garrett, 54, of Burlington, died at 6:40 PM Monday, April 18, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

 

Born December 21, 1961, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edward Joseph and Sally Rae Lewis Box.

 

Michele was a cashier.

 

She was a 1980 graduate of Notre Dame High School.

 

She enjoyed playing computer games and being with her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include her parents, Ed & Sally Box of Burlington; one son, Taylor Garrett of Burlington; two daughters, Christie (Tyson) Steele of Burlington; and Rachel (Onassis) Camacho of Moline, IL; six grandchildren, Tristan Hensley-Lock, Brendan Hensley-Hand, Jameson Hensley, Jordan Bellmyer, Tahlia Camacho, and Ivy Camacho due any day; two brothers, Michael (Marilyn) Box of Burlington, and Mark (Susan) Box of Ft. Collins, CO; one sister, Melinda (Glenn) Spiker of Burlington and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

 

She was preceded in death by her son, Joshua Hensley and her grandparents.

Ethel Mae Devore, age 88, formerly of Wapello, died Wednesday April 20, 2016 at the Lutheran Home in Muscatine.  She was born July 13, 1927 at Iowa City.  On February 28, 1947 she married George Devore in Columbus Junction; he died August 25, 2008.  She worked at Lehigh Leopold in Burlington for many years.

Survivors include:  two sons, Scott and Sandy Devore of Letts; Dan Devore of Wapello; one daughter Patricia Reimers of Muscatine; 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; her twin sister Edith Mills of Muscatine;

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sons.

Cremation has been accorded.  There will be a private family graveside at the Wapello Cemetery.  A luncheon for family and friends will be held Sunday April 24, at 11:30 a.m. at the Corner Market in Wapello.  A general memorial has been established in her name.  Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Pauline Bennett, 94, Burlington died Tue 4/19 at the Great River Hospice House.

She is survived by a son Randy of Burlington, a daughter, Nancy Bennett of Huntsville, AL, a sister, Pat Selleck of Sacramento, CA, 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Duane M. Woolverton, 86, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, IA.

He was born to Harry and Alice Wright Woolverton on May 11, 1929 at home near Good Hope, Illinois. At the age of 9 he moved to the LaHarpe area. He attended Country Schools near Good Hope and LaHarpe, graduating from LaHarpe High School in 1946.

On February 18, 1950 He married Anna Lou Harl at The Colusa United Brethren Church in Colusa, Illinois. They lived and farmed in the Colusa area for 40 years.

Duane and his son, Wayne, operated Woolverton Chevrolet in LaHarpe from 1984 until Duane’s retirement in 1993. In his retirement he helped Boston Brothers of Burnside, Il until 2012.

Duane and Anna Lou enjoyed traveling throughout many states on their Harley Davidson. They were also a team enjoying woodworking. They built many Shadow Boxes, Doll Cradles, Quilt Racks, Shelves and Lazy Susans for friends and family. He built them and she stained and finished them.

Survivors include four sons, Wayne Woolverton of Blandinsville, Il, Gary (Sheri) of Donnellson, IA, Donald (Rhonda) Woolverton and Ned (Tracey) Woolverton, both of the Colusa area, nine grandchildren, thirteen great – grandchildren, five nieces, and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his mother, his sister Eloise Parrish, two Sisters-in-law and one Brother-in-law.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor David Poland officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Harris Cemetery, Dallas City, IL. A memorial fund has been established for the Burnside Christian Church or the Great River Hospice House. Mr. Ryan S. Marsden, 39 of Dallas City, IL passed away at 3:29 PM Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Ryan was born on October 3, 1976 in Burlington, IA, the son of Kirby and Theresa Harrison Marsden. He married Jessica Polhans, together they had a son, Riley. Later, he and his significant other, Karri Brewer Wallace, had a son, Bryce.

Mr. Marsden was a 1994 graduate of the Dallas City High School. He worked alongside his father as the Assistant Manager for their family business, Quality Fisheries in Niota. He was certified by the FDA to develop and implement Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems for Quality Fisheries. Ryan developed many recipes for the smoking operations at Quality Fisheries. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish. He especially enjoyed spending time with his sons.

Ryan is survived by his parents, Kirby and Theresa Marsden of Burlington, two sons Riley Marsden of Missoula, MT, Bryce Marsden of LaHarpe, two sisters, Dana (Mark) Buster of Parker, CO, Kari Marsden of Burlington, niece, Kinsey Buster, two nephews, Kaden Tilley and Corban Cox, grandparents, Charlie and Dee Harrison of Dallas City and Rayma (the late Donald) Rea of Dallas City and many, many friends.

Ryan was preceded in death by his grandmother, Thelma Marsden.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Burial will follow in the Carman Cemetery. Gary L. Adair, 74, of Hot Springs, AR, died on Sunday, April 17, 2016, in Hot Springs, AR.

 

Born December 13, 1941, in Burlington, he was the son of Earl Laverne and Virginia  Doris Anderson Adair. On April 1, 1972, he married Judy Reid in Venison, TX.

 

Gary worked in the Marine Industry where he spent his entire career in sales and marketing.

 

He was a graduate of Burlington High School where he participated in the swimming and track and field programs.  He received his Bachelor of Science of  Degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

 

After college he entered the Marine Industry where he spent his entire career in sales and marketing.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and enjoyed being in the great outdoors.  In his later years his greatest joy was staying in touch with his many long term friends from all over the country.

 

Survivors include his wife, Judy Reid Adair; one brother, Dick (Olivia) Adair of Urbandale, IA; one nephew, David (Shawna) Adair of Springfield, MO; and three great nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laverne and Virginia Adair and his grandparents, Earl and Anna Perdue Adair.

 

The family will receive friends, on Friday, April 29, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM  at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Phyllis G. Decker, 89, of Ottumwa, formerly of West Burlington, died at 8:50 PM Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Hospice House of Davis and Wapello Counties in Ottumwa.

 

Born August 1, 1926, in Joy, IL, she was the daughter of Clarence and Beulah Nesbitt Weeks. On March 25, 1944, she married Cletus  L. (Pete)  Decker in Rock Island, Illinois. He died April 2, 2011.

 

In 1962, she and Pete moved to Grundy Center where they operated NAPA Auto Parts store, they went on to farm in Grundy County outside of Holland;she worked for Grundy National Bank and J.C. Penney. In 1995, she and Pete moved to West Burlington where they became very active members in the West Burlington Christian Church.

 

Family was a vital part of Phyllis’ life, known as Beck by closest relatives. She eagerly looked forward to family gatherings. She was a lifelong seamstress; she enjoyed sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed cooking desserts, especially apple dumplings. She was a member of a local bowling league, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and sold MaryKay products.

 

Survivors include her three daughters Judi (Don) Judge of Stanfield, NC, Shirley (Ron) Jarzombek of Mechanicsville and Sally (Mark) Garner of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren, Tami, Valerie, Shari, Debi, Rob, Randy, Ben, Chris, and Faith; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Broeg of Aledo, IL; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son in infancy, Curtis; five brothers; and two sisters.

 

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory where the family will receive friends.

Rita Gail Decker, 68, of West Burlington, died at 6:03 AM Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Burlington Care Center.

 

Born April 24, 1947, in Colgate, OK, she was the daughter of J.W. McMillen and Violet Verita Beaty. She married James Clifford Musgove in 1954, they were married 17 years and later divorced. Following her divorce, she was married to Kenny Garrison until his death.

 

She enjoyed spending her time outdoors in her yard and tending to her garden; she also enjoyed bird watching, particularly hummingbirds. She enjoyed garage sales, was an excellent artist and had a great sense of humor. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas; but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

 

Survivors include her daughters, Tina Musgrove of West Burlington, Lorraine Kirk of Burlington, and Pamela Jane Martinez, Jr. of Burlington; sister-in-law, JoAnn Couch of Ellsworth, KS; two brothers, Cody Dale (Kathy) Couch of Wilson, KS and David Wayne (Jerilyn) Couch of Russell, KS; and seven nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenny; and one Brother, Donald Dean Couch.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be a Celebration of Life Service on May 21, 2016 in Burlington. Burial will be in Kanopolis, KS at a later date.

Eric was a miner for USG for 26 years.

 

He enjoyed spending his time outdoors farming, fishing, hunting, riding around on four wheelers (ATV), camping, snowmobiling and vacationing with family.

 

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Cody Joe Liles and Hunter Lee Liles both of Mediapolis; his mother; two brothers, Brad (Michelle) Liles of TX, Kevin Liles of Burlington; four nieces; seven nephews; four great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Carl Liles; paternal grandparents, Hershel & Hazel Liles; and maternal grandparents, Harold & Marie Harris.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 29, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Jane Ludemann Edwards, age 71, of Burlington, died on Sunday, April 24, 2016.

 

Born as Susan Winters on April 28, 1944 in Marshalltown , IA to her birth mother, Helen Winters, she was adopted by John Alfred Ludemann and Ermyl Rowe.

 

Jane graduated Cedar Falls High School in 1962 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, where she graduated in 1969.  She would later receive her Masters Degree from Southern Connecticut State University.

 

She married Michael Edwards of Niantic, CT in 1969 and together they raised two children, Stephanie and Kyle.  After their divorce she returned to Iowa and became active in the community.  She served 20 years as a school psychologist for Great Plains Area Education Agency working with schools throughout SE Iowa.  She also served during that time on the Foster Care Review Board.

 

Jane was an active member of the local Unitarian-Universalist Congregation, serving as Congregational President on two separate occasions. She was very active in the local Pagan community, and was a founding member of Spirit Web and the local Pagan Fest.  She enjoyed visiting Native American reservations and helping with service projects there and learning of their culture and spirituality.  Her travels took her to much of North America and into Europe, but some of her most precious memories were of motorcycle trips to Sturgis and summers spent with fellow Pagans at Circle Sanctuary’s Pagan Spirit Gathering.

 

Jane is survived by her daughter Stephanie (Ervin) Kearney and her son, Kyle, both of Burlington, her sister Ann (Steve) Trulin of Englewood, FL, and several grandchildren: Brian (Maria) Smith, Tyler Duca, Tae-Lor Kearney, Sophie Edwards, Kiana Luna Kearney, a nephew Erik Trulin and a niece Sigrid (Brian) Corcoran.

 

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her birth mother and both adoptive parents, and a long time male friend Robert “Swanny” Swanson.

 

She is remembered by many, many people who found her to be their adopted grandmother, crone, mentor, and friend.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, April 29, 2016 at the Unitarian-Universalist Meeting House.

 

The memorial service for Ms. Edwards will be 2:00 PM Sat urday, April 30, 2016, at Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship with Richard Johnson officiating.

Edward “Gene” James, 64, of Burlington, died at 3:03 PM Monday, April 25, 2016, at the Great River Medical Center, ICU.

 

Born December 8, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Charles Edward James and Katherine Barnes.

 

Gene was a commercial cook, one of his favorite places to cook was at the Burlington Hotel.

 

He graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1969.

 

He was a faithful member of the Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship and enjoyed attending church.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching movies and wrestling.

 

Survivors include three sisters, Vicki Gipson, Charlotte James, Arlene Martin all of Burlington; one brother, Troy Robinson of Des Moines; his second mother, Ms. Liz Robinson of Burlington; several nieces, nephews; and many good friends..

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Linda Harris, and one brother, Clifford Gipson Jr.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Prugh’s Chapel.

 

The funeral service for Mr. James will be 1:00 PM Monday, May 2, 2016, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship with Reverend Lawrence L. Manson officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at Union Baptist Church Full Fellowship Gospel following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for the Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship.

Verta Marie Moon, age 88, of Wapello, died Tuesday morning, April 26, 2016, at Wapello Specialty Care.  The daughter of James Edmond and Edith Pearl Rittgers Bloomer, she was born on June 17, 1927 in Des Moines.  She married William H. Moon on December 19, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on December 5, 2004.

 

She graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1945 and from Moody Bible Institute Christian Education in December of 1947.  She was active in the churches her husband pastored.  Verta Marie was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church, served as the librarian, enjoyed singing in the choir, taught Sunday School and VBS and worked in various positions in the AWANA Program.  She enjoyed music and playing the piano, photography, reading, and travelling.

 

Her family includes four children, Beth Ann & Raymond Moon-Gabet of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Bill & Brigette Moon of Cottonwood, California, Mary & Edwin Chavez of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Daniel & Rebecca Moon of Aurora, Illinois,; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Coleen Bloomer of Mesa, Arizona.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; and a granddaughter, Christina.

 

The funeral ceremony for Verta Marie Moon will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Grandview Community Bible Church, officiated by Rev. Darryl Erickson.  Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery with a fellowship lunch to follow at the church.

 

Friends may call on Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the Dudgeon-McCulley

Katherine (Kay) Marie Wagner, 90, of Danville died at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Great River Hospice House.

Born December 13, 1925, in Henry County she was the daughter of Clifford and Florence Carlson.  Kay was a graduate of Mt. Union High School, and attended Iowa Wesleyan College where she played on the first women’s basketball team and also met her future husband, Holly. On August 18, 1945 she married Frank Holly Wagner at the Methodist Church in Mt. Union, Iowa.

Kay was a member of Danville United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women’s Circle, Sunday School teacher, Garden Club, P.E.O., 50 year member of T.T.T., 50 year member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, 4-H leader and volunteer junior high girls’ basketball coach.  Kay and Holly were honored as Iowans of the Day at the 2005 Iowa State Fair.  Kay enjoyed watching basketball games, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include three children, Pam (Bob) Day of Carlisle, Mark Wagner of San Diego, and Jill (George) Bowers of Mesa, AZ; three grandchildren, Steve (Kathryn) Day of  League City, TX, Marcia (Dan) Johnson of Waukesha, WI, and Jessica Bowers of Mesa, AZ; and three great grandchildren, Emma Day of League City, TX and Alyssa and Luke Johnson of Waukesha.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Mike Carlson, Jane Tompkins, and Lorna Cornick.

The funeral service will be held Saturday April 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from the United Methodist Church in Danville, with Rev. Kathleen Moore officiating.  Interment will follow at the Jaggar Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Danville United Methodist Church.

Memorials have been established for Danville Fire and Rescue and Great River Hospice.

Jimmy A Higdon, 78, Danville died Tue 4/26 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, 2 sons, Randy and Greg of Danville, a daughter Diane Snelson of West Burlington, 4 brothers, Bill of Springfield, VA, Stanley of Wever, Bob of New London and Gary of Dallas, GA, 3 sisters, Betty McGrath of Moline, Dorothy Mills of Salem and Kay Bergthold of Springfield, VA.

Harold Lee Waterman, age 72 of rural Stronghurst, Illinois passed away at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday April 27, 2016 at his home. He was born May 27,1943 in Stronghurst, the son of Tim and Olive Kissick Waterman. He was married to Mary Lou Ives. They later divorced. He later married Lois Taylor. They divorced.

 

Mr. Waterman was a graduate of Stronghurst High School and then served in the Army Reserves. He farmed most of his life near Stronghurst. He also worked at Champion Company, J.I. Case Company, Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant, General Electric Company, and most recently, retired from Will Farms Company in West Burlington.

 

Survivors include one son, Steve (Tammy) Ives of Burlington, IA, three daughters, Barb Sherdahl of Carman, IL, Lorrie (Tony) Witte of Danville, IA, and Wendy Taylor-Kayser of Stronghurst, seven grandchildren, Jeremiah and Jessica Ives, Kelsey Hall, Austin and Ashley Witte, Kayla Kayser, and Connor Sherdahl, one sister, Shirley Stevenson of New London, IA, and five brothers, Bill Waterman of Farmington, IA, Roy Waterman of Stronghurst, Sam Waterman of Danville, IA, John Waterman of Springfiled, MO and Melvin Waterman of Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Michelle, in infancy, one grandson, Tyler Ives, and three sisters. Vivian Brill, Catherine Waterman and Doris Peterson.

 

Visitation will be from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday May 2, 2016 in the Stronghurst Cemetery, with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Janet Eloise Tiemeier, 83, of Burlington, died at 1:25 AM Thursday, April 28, 2016, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born July 19, 1932, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Arthur W. and Dorothy Woodard Harmer. On August 25, 1956, she married Richard H. “Dick” Tiemeier in Burlington.

 

Janet was a 1950 graduate of Danville High School and a 1953 graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing, Macomb, Illinois.  She was a registered nurse.

 

She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. She enjoyed collecting antiques, refinishing furniture, and spending time with her family.

 

Survivors include her husband, Dick; two sons, Gregory J. (Martha) Tiemeier of Peoria, IL, and Kevin Tiemeier of Davenport; one daughter, Regina (Douglas) Milroy of Brandon; one brother, Joseph Harmer of Spokane, WA; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, May 2, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

 

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Tiemeier will be 11:00 AM Monday, May 2, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Bill Roush as the Celebrant.  Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John’s cafeteria following the burial.

Mrs. Alice I. (Moore) Mapes, 88, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 11:53AM Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

She was born June 26, 1927 in LaHarpe, the daughter of George A. and Grace Elizabeth Brown Moore. On January 26, 1947 she married Robert L. Mapes in LaHarpe. He preceded her in death on May 27, 2010.

Alice was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. She and her husband owned and operated the Disco Elevator for 24 years. They also operated the Eight Ball Café, Bob’s Tire Shop and along with her brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Carolyn Moore, operated the True Value Store in LaHarpe.

She was a member of the Durham United Methodist Church and the LaHarpe Golden Rule Club. She served on the board of the former LaHarpe Hospital and as an election judge.

She is survived by one brother, Dean (Carolyn) Moore of LaHarpe and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Helen Boone and 2 brothers, Everett and Gene Moore.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Pastor Tom Wright officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00PM Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday. Lawrence Ronald ‘Ron’ Thompson, age 72, of San Jose, California, died unexpectedly on April 16, 2016 in San Jose.  The son of Lawrence Eugene and Selma Jackson Thompson, he was born on February 15, 1944 in Muscatine.  Ron married Sylvia Deam.

 

Ron enlisted in the US Army after graduating from Wapello High School in 1962.  He then went to the University of Iowa and after a few odd jobs he worked for 33 years as a CAD Engineer mostly at GE.  He retired from Home Depot in 2014 after 10 years.

 

He bred and showed pigeons and English budgies at different times during his life.  He enjoyed fishing and camping when he was younger and really enjoyed going to the movies especially after he retired.

 

He is survived by two sons, Aaron & Christina Thompson of Morning Sun and Rob & Desiree Thompson of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren, Freya, Edwin, and Joseph Thompson and Cody and KatieLee Sliger; and three sisters, Jackie Sliger of Boise, Idaho, Sharon & Richard Houston of Columbus, Ohio, and Connie & Chuck Atteberry of Burlington.  He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Sandra K.

 

A visitation where the family will meet friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, April 9, 2016 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.  The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 10, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with a luncheon celebrating Ronnie’s life to follow at the Corner Market in Wapello.  A private burial of the cremated remains will be held at the Harrison Cemetery in rural Wapello. She is survived by a son, Harry Parkin of Burlington, a daughter, Mary Ann Murillo of Burlington, a sister, Mary Arnold of Philadelphia, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
