Briscoe Nelson Menke, 88, of the Good Samaritan Home, Quincy, IL, formerly of Carthage and Colusa, IL, passed away 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at his home.

He was born on January 13, 1927, the son of Berl N. and Mayme F. Brisoe on a small farm near Williamstown, MO. Briscoe married Ruth M. Harl on December 24, 1947, she preceded him in death on February 15, 1981. He later married Jeanne K. Dowdall Siegfried on November 30, 1983, she preceded him in death on January 9, 2005. He then married Billie E. Adkins Snyder of May 4, 2011, she survives.

Mr. Menke was a member of the Melrose Chapel Methodist Church in Quincy, IL. He was a past member of the Elvaston Presbyterian Church in Elvaston, IL and the Colusa United Methodist Church in Colusa, IL. He served on several Church Boards during his tenure at the Church in Elvaston and Colusa.

Briscoe attended a small one room Country School near Deer Ridge, MO and graduate from high school in LaBelle, MO. After graduating with honors in 1944, he joined the Navy Air Bases near Coral Gables and Key West, FL. He served two years of active duty and served four years in the Navy Reserves having reached the rating of Aviation Ordnance 2nd Class Petty Officer.

Mr. Menke then returned home and farmed with and for his father-in-law, Ralph Harl, near Colusa for a period of years. He later accepted the position with the Illinois State A.S.C.S. as program training officer and later accepted the position as County Executive Officer at the Hancock County A.S.C.S. Office in Carthage.

During his tenure with the County A.S.C.S Office, he was awarded the Illinois State and District Service Award and the National Service Award for Superior Service to Agriculture for Distinguished Individual Achievement at the USDA Office in Washington, DC along with 28 other USDA employees across the USA.

After retiring from Hancock Co. Illinois A.S.C.S Office, he was employed as a loan officer at the Marine Trust Bank in Carthage until taking full retirement in 1993.

Briscoe served as a board member of the newly formed Nauvoo-Colusa combined District for 12 years, later serving on the County Regional District Board of School Directors.

He also served as a Fireman and Chief of the Colusa Fire Dept. and as a Board member of the Dallas Rural Fire District and secretary Treasure for over 30 years. He also served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Illinois State Fire Protection Dist. for a number of years.

He served as a Director of the Western Illinois Electric Cooperative and the Illinois Association of Electric Cooperatives for 15 years. He and other Illinois Association Board Members were invited to China as guests of the Chinese Electical Assoc.

He served as a Director of the formation of the Hancock County 911 District for a number of years.

Survivors include, his wife, Billie, two sons, Stephen (Diane) Menke of Dallas City, IL and Michael (Maria) Menke of Niota, IL, four grandchildren, Craig (Ashley) Menke, Kevin (Angie) Menke, Nicholas (Tonya) Menke and Desiree Menke, one brother, Earl Menke of Carman, IL and one sister, Marian Plack of Knoxville, IL.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Ruth and Jeanne.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2016 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Mark Pettit officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Harris Cemetery, Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established in his memory. Al Lunning, 94, Burlington died Mon 5/2 at Blair House Nursing and Rehab.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve, a son, Elliott of Waxhaw, NC, 5 daughters, Scarlett Lunning of Des Moines, Marianne Darnall, Kate McKasson and Julie Anderson of Burlington, Laurie Lind of Overland, KS, a sister, Marilyn Thompson of Boulder, CO, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Sat 5/7 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Friends may call from 8 AM to 5 PM Fri 5/6 at Lunnings with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the time of service.

 

Ross Lee Foster, age 64, of rural Morning Sun, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at his home.  The son of Charles and Vivian Beeding Foster, he was born on May 22, 1951 in Muscatine.

 

He served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.  Ross enjoyed farming and trucking.  He was a 24 year member of the American Legion Hays Scott Post 112 in Morning Sun.  He enjoyed his Harley motorcycle and participating in the Legion Rides.

 

His family includes a son, Kenneth & Mackenzie Foster of Muscatine; two daughters, Emily & Jesse Bullock of New Boston, Illinois and Karynda & Casey Mangold of New London; eight grandchildren, Skye, Rainn, and Cash Foster, Thomas Bullock, Savannah Gibson, and Wyatt, Kinsley, and Emmett Mangold; eight sisters, Mary Robertson, Phyllis Kauffman, Dorothy Morrow, all of Wapello, Audrey Sirovy of Burlington, Sally Malcom, Ethel Foster, Edith Foster, all of Wapello, and Ina Foster of Mt. Pleasant; and a brother, Allen Foster of Wapello.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Jesse and Nic Bullock; and two brothers, Roger and Kenneth Foster.

 

A visitation where the family will meet friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.  A private burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery.

 

A general memorial fund has been established.

Beverly  Ann Stevens, 70, of West Burlington, died at 5:00 AM Saturday, May 7, 2016, at her home.

 

Born January 7, 1946, in Hawaii, she was the daughter of Frank and Gladys Pao Bolduc. She married Ron Stevens in Burlington, he died in 1991.

 

Beverly was a waitress.

 

She graduated from San Leandro High School.

 

She enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting, camping, being outside, and spending time with her friends and family.  She enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii.

 

Survivors include one son, Michael Keven Nelson of Rock Island; two daughters, Roberta (Michael) Burriss of Sacramento, CA, Teda Hartsock of Dinwiddie, VA; six grandchildren, Stephen Jacob, Matthew Hartsock, James Miller Jr., Robert Miller, Kimbery Crane, Michele Quinto; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Bush of Sacramento, CA, Gloria Weathersord of San Diego, CA.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Frank and Allen.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no formal services at this time.

 

Burial will be held a later date at the Quincy National Cemetery.

  1. Lois Campbell, 96 of Stronghurst, IL passed away at 6:30 p.m. Thursday May 5, 2016 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

Lois was born on the Brokaw family farm near Raritan, Illinois on April 26, 1920, the eldest of five children of George and Mary Gunter Brokaw. She attended Cox Grade School and graduated from Media-Wever High School in 1937. She attended nursing school in Burlington, IA for two years and had to quit nurses training upon marrying Oscar Dowell on October 9, 1940. They spent their married life in Henderson County, Illinois, where Oscar was involved in farming. Oscar passed away on April 8, 1966. After his death, Lois finished the farming that year and then sold the farming business.

She attended business school in Burlington, and upon completion, worked for Knutstrom Chevrolet dealership in Stronghurst. On August 25, 1968, she married Norman Campbell and moved to Monmouth, IL, where she worked for the Warren County Farm Bureau. In 1973, they moved to Marengo, IL, and she worked for Northern Illinois Breeding Co-op. Both she and Norman retired and continued to live in Marengo where they were active in charity work, especially the Loaves And Fishes food pantry. They were awarded the Jefferson Award for Northern Illinois Volunteer Work in 1987. In February, 1990, they moved back to Stronghurst.

Lois continued in volunteer work at the Stronghurst United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens Center in Stronghurst, and 18 years of volunteer work at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab, also in Stronghurst.

Survivors include one son, Rod (Karen) Dowell of Girard, IL, one stepdaughter, Sheila (George) Wells of Bloomington, IL, two stepsons, Larry (Becky) Dowell and Sid Dowell, both of Stronghurst, 7 granddaughters, 5 grandsons, 20 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, one sister, Lillian Bray of LaHarpe, IL, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, three brothers, and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday May 10, 2016 at the Stronghurst United Methodist Church, with Rev. Karna Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst Cemetery. Helen Laurene Housman, age 93 of Yarmouth, died Saturday May 7, 2016 at Great River  Medical Center.  The daughter of Charles Earnest and Bessie Marie (Anderson) Butcher, she was born December 11, 1922 at Morning Sun.  On September 10, 1942 she married Floyd Everett Housman at Morning Sun; he died November 17, 2006. Helen was a farmwife who loved her family, the beauty of the country, her home and the results of working hard and giving to others.  Helen and Floyd farmed a century family farm.  She was a member of the Yarmouth United Methodist Church and local ladies club.

Those left to cherish her memory; three children and their spouses, Tony and Pennie Housman of Wapello; Nathan and Barbara Housman of Yarmouth; Pearl Marie and Orson Bauder of Musctine; 6 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren;  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Robert and Maynard Butcher and one sister Eva Mae Corey; one grandson Jerrry Housman;

 

The funeral service will be held Thursday May 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, with Pastor Dan Baker officiating.  Interment will follow at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.  Friends may call on Wednesday from 2-7:00 p.m. at Hagele and Honts, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m.  Memorials have been established for the Yarmouth First Responders and the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service.

 

Irene Helen Clark, 94, formerly of Burlington, died at 7:54 PM Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the Knoxville, Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

 

Born March 11, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Nelly Haag Vorwerk. On May 23, 1946, she married Leo Clark in Burlington. He died on January 17, 1985.

 

Irene worked 18 years for Hy-Vee in the bakery on Angular before retiring.

 

She was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church. She was a housekeeper and loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include three sons, Richard Clark of West Des Moines, Robert Clark of Pleasantville, Michael Clark of New London; one daughter, Bette Beltakis of Euclid, OH; one brother, Brother Anthony Vorwerk of Atchison, KS; one sister, Joan Kurtz of Fort Madison; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, five sisters and an infant daughter.

 

A Rosary will be recited at 2:00 PM Monday, May 9, 2016, at  Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at St. John The Baptist Church. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Clark will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John cafeteria following the burial.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for SS John and Paul Catholic Church.

Joe Hampton, 75, of West Point, died at 11:15 AM Friday, May 6, 2016, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

 

Born January 31, 1941, at home in West Point, Iowa, he was the son of Elmer C. and Wylma Saltzgaver Hampton. On August 3, 1963, he married Dorothy “Dotty” Tripp in Fort Madison, Iowa.

 

Joe retired from J.J. Nichting and worked on the farm all of his life.

 

He graduated Denmark High School in 1959.

 

He enjoyed the outdoors, mushroom hunting, farming, going to the watch Sprint Invader races, and his two dogs, Jake and JoJo; but most of all he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Dotty; one daughter, Kelly (Terry) Manning of Burlington; two sons, Doug Hampton & Mark Hampton both of West Point; four grandchildren, Tucker, Spencer, and  Braden Manning, Emma Knox; one great-grandchild, Pierce and one on the way; one brother-in-law, Gale Schuster of West Point; and many nieces and nephews..

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and one sister, Jean Schuster.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory where food will be provided.

Henry W. “Pops” Gordon Jr., 68, of Burlington, died at 9:55 AM Monday, May 9, 2016, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

 

Born October 4, 1947, in Saint Louis, MO, he was the son of Henry Waddell Gordon Sr. and Willie Mae Black.

 

Henry was a fabricator at J.I. Case for 33 years.  After he retired he worked several jobs in maintenance.

 

He served in the United States Army and the Peace Corps. He was the Union President for J.I. Case and a member of Goldwing Chapter E. He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Bulls fan. He enjoyed spending his spare time riding his motorcycle, fishing, coaching little league sports, playing cards, eating at Hungry Bear, but most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Lynette “Lyn” (James) Mason of Des Moines; three sons, Jeremy “Jay” (Stacie) Gordon of Fort Madison,  Doug (De) Taylor of Burlington, and Ronnie (Amy) Harrison of Des Moines; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Harry (Nadine) Gordon of Arkansas; two sisters, Lorretta of Missouri and Joyce of California; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, LaCresia and Katherine “Tossie”.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 PM Friday, May 13, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

James Lee Spiker, 64, Stronghurst died Sun 5/8 at the Great River Medical Center

He is survived by his wife, Rexetta, a son James of Oquawka, 3 daughters, Tracy Moore and Ashley Orth of Danville and Melissa  Root of Stronghurst, a twin brother, Jerry of Stronghurst & 15 grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 PM Sat 5/14 at the 1st Assembly of God Church with burial in the Stronghurst Cemetery.

Lois B. Freeman, 86, of Danville, died at 11:24 AM Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center  in Carrollton, TX.

 

Born March 6, 1930, in Brighton, IA, she was the daughter of Roy and Belva Farrier Knerr. She married Frank LaVerne Ash.  They later divorced. She was married to Charles Don Freeman until his death in 1992.

 

Lois was a machinist at the Ordnance Plant.

 

She was of Lutheran Faith. She loved westerns, puzzles, bird watching, taking care of her cat Snickles, and spending time with her grandkids.

 

Survivors include one step-daughter, Kathy Werner of Burlington; one step-son, Tom  Freeman of Ottumwa; three grandchildren, Dusty (Terry) Farren, Julie Barton, Tyler (Bobbie Morrison) Storks; five great-grandchildren, Alexis Stephensen, Christofer Barton, Taylor Barton, Jesiah Storks, Shyla Storks; one sister, Edna Crawford of Washington; one brother, Bob “Babe” Knerr of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, Vonnie Alexander and Janet Niblack; and five brothers, Eugene, Leroy, Jack, Richard and Larry.

 

The family will receive friends at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory at 11:00 AM and then process to a graveside committal service for Mrs. Freeman at noon on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Jaggar Cemetery with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating.

Anne Marie Ohlensehlen, 93, Burlington died Thu 5/5 at Blair House Nursing and Rehab.

She is survived by 3 sons, Jay of Hereford, AZ, Terry and Jim both of Davenport, a daughter, Verna Lee Hicks of Marion, IA, 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Graveside Memorial Funeral Service will be held on Mon 5/16 at 1 PM in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Cale Jameson Hartrick, 17, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 9:51 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, IA.

He was born on December 22, 1998 in Merriam, KS, the son of James Dean and Deanna Michelle May Hartrick.

Cale attended grade school and junior-high in Dallas City and was currently a member of the junior class at the Illini West High School in Carthage, IL. He was a member of the baseball and basketball teams for the Illini West Chargers. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He enjoyed playing video games with his Squad. His contiguous smile and outgoing personality touched all who knew him.

Survivors include his parents, Dean and Deanna Hartrick of Dallas City, three sisters, Zoey, Marah and Emma Hartrick all at home, paternal grandfather, Jim and his wife Debbie Hartrick of Hamilton, IL, maternal grandparents, Randy and Ellen May of Lomax, IL, several aunts, uncles, cousins and his girlfriend, Maddie Shutwell.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Sina Hartrick, and his great-grandparents.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Illini West High School Gymnasium in Carthage with Pastor Chris Carr officiating. Burial will be held at Crane Cemetery, near Lomax. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Gymnasium where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for a scholarship in Cale’s memory, the University of Iowa Dance Marathon, HUGS of Hancock County or a charity of the donor’s choice. Gilbert Graydon Wagner, 82, of Burlington, died at 11:51 PM Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born April 2, 1934, in Burlington, he was the son of Herbert and Velma Williams Wagner. On July 5, 1953, he married Darlene A. Persinger in Ft. Madison. She died September 25, 2012.

 

Gilbert worked for I.A.A.P. as a pipe fitter for 37 years. He had many talents. He has previously worked for Hy-Vee Bakery, Benner Tea, and Catfish Bend Casino as a Blackjack Dealer.

 

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He came from a long line of bakers and was baker by trade; he enjoyed baking pastries. He also enjoyed spending his time fishing, camping, going mushroom hunting, attending auctions, visiting flea markets, and taking vacations.

 

Survivors include two sons, Kim (Joyce) Wagner of Topeka, KS and Chris Michael Wagner of Burlington; two daughters, Jacqueline (Mike) Schnedler and Jennifer Wirt both of Burlington; 11 grandchildren, Sara (Jason) McClure, Jacob (Cara) Schnedler, Luke Wagner, Zachary (Lynette) Wagner, Andrew Wagner, Collin (Amanda) Wirt, Aaron (Mallory) Wirt, Curtis Wagner, and Matthew Hild; nine great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Regan and Finnegan McClure, Jaden and Brecken Schnedler, Gracelyn Rose and Owen Wagner, Presley and Charlie Wirt, and Graydon and Holden Wirt; numerous nieces and nephews; and his extended family Luene (Peuy) Kantophone, of Thailand.

 

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Joseph Wagner, and two brothers, Stanley and Robert Wagner.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM  with the family to receive friends following a 4:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home and Crematory.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Wagner will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Mary Lucia Lietsch, 74, Burlington died Mon 5/16 at Burlington Care Center.

She is survived by 8 sisters, Michaela Daly and Sheila Drew of Burlington, Patricia Darnold, Rosemary Harris and Judy Heap all of West Burlington, Sister Lucia “Gloria” Lietsch of Chicago and Mary Ellen Rincon of Pinellas Park, FL, a brother Tom of Burlington.

Memorial Funeral Services will be held on Sat 5/21 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Burlington.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

 

Marion D. Howe, age 98 of Mediapolis, died Tuesday May 17, 2016 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  The son of Arthur Thomas and Ethel Gladys (Brockway) Howe, he was born May 12, 1918 at Kingston.  On February 27, 1939 he married Laurada Moser at Kahoka, MO.; she died March 17, 2005.  He worked as an Iron worker local 577 in Burlington.  He served in the US Navy during WWII. He attended Kingston schools. He enjoyed iron work, coon dog trainer, mules, was an avid hunter and fisherman; was a professional storyteller, was a bear hunting guide in Minnesota for years; he loved the river, was master of the “train whisle”; He never knew a stranger and loved his family and friends.

Survivors include: three sons, Delbert Howe of New London;  Ervin Howe of Kingston; Harry Howe of Fort Madison; 14 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 34 great great grandchildren,  several nieces, nephews, and cousins.   He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Ceola, one son Jerry, one grandson and one great grandson, two sisters and two brothers. The family will meet with friends Friday May 20, 2016 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. Cremation will be accorded following visitation.  A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday May 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Danville. A luncheon will follow the service.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.

 

Mark Lee Wessling, age 35 of Morning Sun, died at 6:24 a.m. Tuesday May 17, 2016 at the Morning Sun Care Center following a lengthy illness.  The son of Jeff and Doris (Lamaak) Wessling, he was born August 23, 1980 at Manning, Iowa. He married Sarah Long in January 2016.  He graduated in 2000 from Wal Lake View Auburn High School in Lake View, Iowa and was involved in the construction business along with many handyman type of jobs.  He loved working on race cars, hunting, harassing his nieces and nephews and just hanging out with friends.

 

Survivors include:  his wife Sarah Long of Morning Sun; his son Blake Wessling of Morning Sun; his mother and step father Doris and Chris Mosman of Winfield; one sister Amanda (Richie) Cooley of Morning Sun; one brother Joshua Mosman of Winfield; grandparents Pete and Kate Lamaak of Wal Lake, Iowa and Louie and Jolene Wessling of Dunlap, Iowa; Lon and Jan Mosman of Carroll, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by his Father, one grandmother and great grandparents.

Bernice Holmberg, 88, of Burlington, died at 12:15 AM Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House.

 

Born October 27, 1927, in Speaker Township, MI, she was the daughter of Otto E. and Jean E. Wright Amon.  In 1949 she married Roy L. Holmberg in Speaker Township, MI.  He died on August 28, 2007.

 

Bernice was a homemaker and worked for TWA Airline for three years.

 

She was a graduate of Yale High School in Michigan

 

She was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ and was active in the church.  She was a member and past president of P.E.O. Chapter KB. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Survivors include one son, Alan Roy (Chris) Holmberg of Sonoma, CA; one daughter, Lisa Ann (Bob) Hart of Cape Coral, FL; and six grandchildren.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in by death her parents, two sisters, Maxine Stamates, Joyce Barr, and one brother, Rex Amon.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

Larry Curtis (Darb) Darbyshire age 76, of Yarmouth, died on Friday, May 20, 2016, at his home in Yarmouth.  Born January 15, 1940, at home in Yarmouth, he was the son of Curtis and Irma Lee Gabeline Darbyshire.  On December 14, 1962, in Yarmouth, he married Patricia Oberman.

He was a 1959 graduate of Yarmouth High School and served in the Iowa National Guard for eight years.  Darb was a lifelong farmer in the Yarmouth area.

He was a member of the Des Moines County Cattlemen’s Association, Crooked Creek Two-Cylinder Club, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Soybean Growers Association, Trinity Cemetery Board Member, and Washington Township Trustee.  He was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, anything John Deere, antique tractors, tractor rides and parades, the Des Moines County and Iowa State Fairs, Old Threshers, the St. Louis Cardinals, deer hunting, John Wayne movies, and spending time with his family.

Besides his wife, Pat, survivors include two daughters, Mary (David) Steffener of Sperry and Pam (Dan) Massner of Mediapolis; a son, Tom (Sheila) Darbyshire of Morning Sun; nine grandchildren; two step-grandsons; two great granddaughters; five step-great grandchildren; one sister, Dixie Hauswirth of Morning Sun; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister, Deborah Diane Darbyshire; and an infant niece, Tammy Lee Hauswirth.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

The funeral ceremony for Larry (Darb) Darbyshire will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at the Yarmouth Community Church.  Burial will follow at the Trinity Cemetery in rural Mt. Union.

Ila Glenadene Stone, 94, Burlington died Mon 5/23 at the Great River Hospice House.

Norman Ross Johnson, age 76, of Wapello, Iowa died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at the Great River Hospice  House in West Burlington, Iowa.  The son of Ross Norman and Phyllis Darlyne (Buster) Johnson, he was  born on September 3, 1939 in Grandview, Iowa at the home of Lee Earl ‘Bob’ and Iva Mae (Buchan)  Buster, his maternal grandparents.

 

Norman spent his childhood years in Wapello, but also enjoyed spending his summers travelling with a  family friend who owned a Ferris wheel and other carnival rides.  He was a member of Boy Scout Troop  16, and worked at the REA during the summers and later at the Corner Grocery.  Norman graduated  from Wapello High School in 1958.  He spent 1 year working at J.I. Case in Burlington and then 39‐1/2  years at U.S. Gypsum in Sperry, Iowa in various capacities.  At the time of his retirement from U.S.  Gypsum, he was General Foreman in the mine.

 

On December 14, 1960, Norman married the love of his life, Maureen Kay June of Wapello in Iowa City,  Iowa.  In 1962, Norman was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent 2 years working in the motor pool at  the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York.  Upon discharge from the Army, Norman and Kay  settled in Burlington where they started their family.  Together they raised two children, Gwen and  Charles, moving back to Wapello in 1979.

 

Norman enjoyed golfing at Indian Hills Country Club and fishing with his buddies on the Iowa and  Mississippi Rivers.  He also enjoyed camping, taking his family on RAGBRAI five times in the 1980’s and  wintering in Mission, Texas with Kay after retirement.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian  Church and Masonic Lodge #5, both in Wapello.

 

Norman is survived by his wife, Kay Johnson of Wapello; a son, Charles (Lisa) Johnson of Kalona, Iowa;  three sisters, Donna (Bill) Maddux and Opal (Dick) Taylor, both of Wapello, and Twyla Humphrey of  Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Courtney Johnson of Marion, Iowa, Cassidy Johnson of Dubuque,  Iowa, and Logan and Lexy Wadsworth of Kalona, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.  Norman was  preceded in death by his daughter Gwen Johnson‐Walker, two brothers Joe Johnson and Charles  Johnson and his parents.

 

The funeral services for Norman Johnson will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello beginning with Masonic Rites at 9:30 AM followed by the family meeting with friends until 11:00 AM.  The funeral ceremony will begin at 11:00, officiated by Rev. Dean Graber of Great River Hospice.  Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery and include military rites by the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166.  A fellowship lunch will follow at the Community Room of the First Presbyterian Church.

 

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Great River Hospice and the First Presbyterian Church.

Charles “Fred” Fredrick Curtis, 69, of Wapello, died at 6:25 PM Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House.

 

Born January 8, 1947, in Keokuk, IA, he was the son of Uhl Otto and Martha Elizabeth Baskett Curtis Cale. On July 3, 1971, he married Linda Sue McKay in Keokuk, IA.  They later divorced. On March 26, 1994, he married Jacqueline Diane Barnett in Keokuk, IA.  She died on January 24, 2009.

 

Charles was a pipe fitter at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 20 years and at Heniges (former Shelor Globe) for 15 years.

 

He was a 1966 graduate of Keokuk High School.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

 

He enjoyed computers, chess, science fiction, fishing, WWF Wrestling, genealogy, home repair and auto mechanics.

 

Survivors include four sons, Jason (Ricquel Dobson) Curtis of Burlington, Richard Dean of Fort Madison, Jeff McKay of Keokuk, Shawn Dean of Wapello; five daughters, Stacie Hubbard, Melissa (Kim Maxwell) McKay, Tammie (David) Kay all of Keokuk, Dawn (Steve) Dean of Fruitland, Lacey Rodgers Curtis of Wapello; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Marilyn) Curtis of Keokuk; two sisters, Lois (Vernon) Evermon of Wyaconda, MO, Geraldine Sackfield of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers, one daughter, one son-in-law, one grandson, and one great-granddaughter.

Kenneth Warren Ferguson, 93, of Burlington, died at 9:58 PM Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

 

Born February 18, 1923, in New Sharon, IA, he was the son of Frank and Nellie Davis Ferguson. On August 30, 1947, he married Helen Arlene Bult in Keokuk, IA.

 

Kenneth worked for Star Kimble, was an electrician at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in World War II.

 

He was of Protestant faith.  Kenny had many beloved hunting dogs throughout his life and loved all of his animals including his pet goat, Billie.  He raised and trained English Pointers, competed in local field trials, and hunted quail and pheasants.  Kenny enjoyed trail riding and Quarter Horse shows with Sherry.  He and his wife, Arlene, enjoyed vegetable gardening with enough produce to also supply the neighbors.  Kenny enjoyed fishing and camping with friends and family at Lake Geode and the Skunk and Mississippi Rivers.  He also enjoyed spending time fishing for big catfish and just relaxing at Dave and Sherry’s cabin.

 

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sherry Lynn (David) Zeller of Burlington; one granddaughter, Jessie (Mike) Zeller-Werle of North Liberty; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Werle of North Liberty; and nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Floyd Ferguson, and one sister, Irene Schuler.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no formal visitation or services at this time. Committal services will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Harold  E. Horton, 53, of Fort Madison, died Monday, May 30, 2016, at his home.

 

Born December 25, 1962, in Dixon, IL, he was the son of Harlem Eugene and Genevieve Lee Ludwick Horton. On March 12, 2016, he married Deborah Lynn Bowen in New London, IA.

 

He worked for J.I. Case for 5 years.

 

He graduated from Polo Community High School in Polo, IL in 1981. He later attended Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO.

 

He was a member of  UAW Local 807. He enjoyed grilling and chilling, learning to play guitar, playing darts, and relaxing in the pool with a cold one. He was an avid Fighting Illini fan and loved cars, especially his Audi and Volkswagens. He enjoyed his job, spending time with his friends and family giving them a good laugh; and always telling them “Don’t sweat the small stuff baby.”

 

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Lynn Horton of Fort Madison, two sons, Andrew (Robin) Horton of Bay City, MI and Adam Horton of Jacksonville, WI; one daughter, Samantha Horton of Maquoketa; one step-son, Matthew Allen Stanford of Coralville; two step-daughters, Jasmine Ariel Stanford and Kenya Rose Stanford both of Ames, his parents, Harlem Eugene Horton and Genevieve Lee Horton; two brothers, Harlem (Leanne) Horton and Howard (Marci) Horton both of Milledgeville, IL; and two sisters, Lucie (Joe Vests) Horton of Peoria, IL and Margaret (Robert Bowers) Horton of Forreston, IL.

Mr. Lawrence H. “Jack” Bundy, 70, of Macomb, IL passed away at 5:00 PM Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA.

He was born on June 25, 1945 in LaHarpe, IL the son of Julian and Bonnie Belville Bundy. On December 9, 1965 Jack married Janet Wall in Carthage, IL. She survives.

Jack served in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1967-1969. He worked for Maytag in Galesburg, IL for 33 years. Later, he worked as a maintenance man in the Farm King warehouse. Jack was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and four-wheeling. He also loved bowling.

Jack is survived by his wife, Janet; two daughters: Melissa (Tim Howard) Bundy of Avon, IL, Catina (Nick Flynn) Langkford of Macomb; five grandchildren: Lyndsay Langkford, Danielle Bundy, Sheyenne Howard, Zach Langkford, Jacob Langkford; one great-grandson: Keyon Hughes; eight siblings: Juanita Oaks of LaHarpe, Rodney Bundy of Colmar, Joe (Lori) Bundy of Fountain Green, Vernon Bundy of LaHarpe, Bonnie Sue Parker of Hazel Green, AL, Cheryl (John) Pence of LaHarpe, Mark Timothy (Sherre Robbins) Bundy of Alexander, Ron (Pam) Bundy of Burnside; and many nieces and nephews.

Edna Carman, 91, of Burlington, died at 5:45 AM Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Burlington.

 

Born December 15, 1924, in Pine Knot, KY, she was the daughter of Thomas and Dora Neal Creekmore. On November 21, 1948, she married Kenneth Carman in Knoxville, Tennessee.

 

She received a Masters in Christian Education from Berkeley Divinity School.

 

Edna grew up on her father’s Kentucky farm. She went to California to work as a secretary at the Naval base during WWII. She then attended Berkeley Divinity School where she met Kenneth. After they were married she went to the Philippines as a missionary teacher, where her daughter was born.  They returned to the United States in 1953 and settled in Salina, KS, where her two sons were born.  In 2010 they moved to Burlington. She was a friend of the Parkside First Baptist Church and a member of the Church at the Cross in Salina. In previous years she was a member of Salina Art Society, Sweet Adelines and was the author of several books. In recent years she enjoyed visits with her family, doing word search puzzles and going on car rides around Burlington.

 

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Scott (Teresa) Carman of Patterson, CA, Paul (Nara) Carman of Evanston, IL; one daughter, Kathy (Tyrone) Henderson of Burlington; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Mary Creekmore of Strunk, KY; and several nieces and nephews

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, J.C. and Willard Creekmore.

Rickey Dean Beggs, 64, of Mediapolis, died at 11:45 AM Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born June 3, 1952, in Burlington, he was the son of Raymond Peter Paul and Arlene A. Stigge Beggs. On November 13, 1978, he married Laurie Ann Haber in Kahoka, MO.

 

Rickey worked in construction for thirty years.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from 1971 until 1972.

 

He was a member of Harmony Bible Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his plants especially his hostas and cactus, and doing carpentry work.

 

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Raymond Beggs, Andrew Beggs, Dereck (Rebecca) Beggs, Loren Beggs all of Burlington; one daughter, Stephanie (Tim) Ewing of Keokuk; one sister, Linda (Larry) Ballard of Benton Harbor, MI; three half brothers, Kevin McCannon, Chris (Christy) Beggs, Mark (Irene) Beggs all of Burlington; one sister-in-law, Debbie Beggs of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren, Mikayla, Braiden, Kiara, Blaze, Braddock, Kiya, Keizer Beggs and one on the way.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dennis Beggs.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no formal services.

 

A memorial has been established for the family.

Nancy Jo Billings, 59, of Burlington, died at 2:10 AM Monday, June 13, 2016, at the Burlington Care Center.

 

Born October 13, 1956, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Dwight H. and Dona M. Dole Senf.

 

Nancy worked in retail.

 

She was a member of Carman United Methodist Church. She enjoyed watching WWE, soap operas, Lucy, Elvis and Christmas time.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Amy Billings of Burlington, Alyssa (Dan) Glasscock of Keokuk; one son, Aaron Billings of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Chelci, Austin, Jadyn, Danielle, Gavin, Isabelle, Brady and Rylee; her mother, Dona M. Senf of Burlington; three sisters, Denise “Denne” (Kenny) Grelk of Ft. Madison, Peggy (Cecil) Barnes of Ft. Madison, and Donna “Dee” Senf of Janesville, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The memorial service for Mrs. Billings will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Kirk Bennett officiating.  Burial will be in Bonaparte Cemetery.

 

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.
