Rose Lorraine Walsh, 88, of St. Charles, MO, died Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles, MO.

Born on October 23, 1928 in St. Louis, MO, she was the daughter of William and Rose (Elmherst) Jacoby.  She married John Robert Walsh on September 11, 1948 in St. Louis, MO.  He died January 24, 2004.

Rose worked in food service with the Burlington school system for many years.  She was a member of St. John Catholic Church.  She also enjoyed playing bingo, crafts, playing cards, and cross stitching.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam (Bill) Sostman of O’Fallon, MO and Pat (Martin) Wiegard of Burlington; one son, Martin (Andrea) Walsh of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Lisa Kerns, Heidi Best, Phillip Walsh, Chris Sostman, Stacey Swisher and Tim and Mike Wiegard; and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Walsh will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 3rd, at Keokuk National Cemetery.  Pastor Marshall Jackman will officiate.  Lunning Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

 

 

Yueh Rong Su, 83, of Burlington, died at 1:57 PM Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at her home.

 

Born March 30, 1933, in Kwang Sankun, Chulla Namdo, Korea, she was the daughter of Jiu Lian and Ming Yuh Ding Gau. On November 23, 1958, she married Wen Maw Su in Seoul, Korea. He died January 7, 2004.

 

Mr. & Mrs. Su along with their family owned and operated the Great Wall Restaurant for many years.

 

She enjoyed gardening, golfing, and driving.

 

Survivors include one son, Charlie (Shihchun) Su of Burlington; three daughters, Marcia (Simon) Chou of Marietta, GA, Susan (Joe) Lee of San Diego, CA, Maw Xian of Shan Tong, China; eleven grandchildren, Hai Bo, Wei Wei, Eugene, Nancy, Kattie, Wendy, Emily, Paulina, David, Sabrina, and Richard; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Pibin (Isabelle) Gau of Burlington.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Mike Su.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Su will be 11:00 AM Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Jong Koo Lee officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Mary “Frances” Hacker, 100, of Burlington, died at 10:13 PM Friday, March 31, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center.

 

Born May 13, 1916, in Des Moines Co., she was the daughter of Joseph Raymond and Mollie Gertrude Groeltz Eversman. On February 20, 1941, she married George E. Hacker in Burlington. He died on June 27, 1978.

 

Frances was a teacher in a one room school house.  She worked as a home health aide and delivered the Hawk Eye for a time.

 

She was a graduate of SCC.

 

She was a member of St. Paul Women’s Guild, the Friendly Neighbors Club, and SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. She loved to garden, play pinnacle, and any other card or board game. She was a master at crossword puzzles. She always loved a good joke too. She was simply the best.

 

Survivors include two sons, Alan (Betty) Hacker of Burlington, & Paul E. Hacker of Austin, TX; two sisters, Pauline Olson & Theresa Graham both of Lacombe, Alberta Canada; four grandchildren, Julie Cavender, Crystal Bivens, Travis McGee and Damon Bowman; five great-grandchildren, Bryce, Alli, & Braylyn Bivens, Jackson & Willa Bowman; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Lois Martin, two brothers, Louis Eversman & Bill Eversman.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at  Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Hacker will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Paul’s Church Hall following the burial.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for SS. John & Paul Catholic Church, Great River Hospice and the Notre Dame High School.

Mr. Robert Timmerman, 53, of Hillsboro died at 4:49 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017 at his home.

Born April 20, 1963 in Burlington, he was the son of James Timmerman and Gail (Smith) Braun.

Mr. Timmerman was an ironworker for Union Local #577 for over 25 years.  He was of the Jewish faith and loved cars and working on them.  He was a cat lover and enjoyed coin and precious metal collecting, and computers.  He also enjoyed woodworking and built his own home.  Mr. Timmerman was a simple man and was a hardworking, highly intelligent and honest person.

Survivors include his mother, Gail Braun of Burlington; three brothers, John Timmerman and David Braun both of Burlington and Patrick Timmerman of West Burlington; one niece, Jamie Timmerman of St. Paul, Minnesota; and two nephews, Caleb Timmerman of St. Paul and Alexander Timmerman of Yazoo City, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The graveside funeral service and interment for Mr. Timmerman will be 3 p.m. Friday, April 7th, in Latty Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter in Fort Madison.

 

Rita A. Rogerson, 83, of West Burlington, died at 1:22 PM Monday, April 3, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center.

 

Born July 26, 1933, in Seattle, WA, she was the daughter of Edward and Clara Belle King Bugden. On January 5, 1951, she married George William Rogerson in Ketchikan, AK.

 

Rita was employed by Prall Insurance for many years.

 

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church; and she was a member of the Alter Guid at the church. She was a social butterfly. She enjoyed spending her time playing cards, dancing, but most of all, being with her large family.

 

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Janice Creighton, Kimberly (Jerry) Glasgow, Beth (Steve) Reynolds all of Burlington, and Amy (Gary) McClure of Clarksville, TN; four sons, Rusty (Cindy) Rogerson of Coralville, David (Debra) Rogerson of Dallas, TX, George Jr. (Julie) Rogerson of Burlington, and Matthew (Dawn) Rogerson of West Burlington; 15 grandchildren, Melissa (Jason), Ryan, Tad (Nikki), Erin (Anthony), Sarah (Ryan), Jacob (Meagan), Cody (Cynthia), Samantha, Hattie, Vera, Whitney (Aaron), Brady (Roxann), Alex (Kelley), Morgan, and Reagan, 16 great-grandchildren; and one niece and one nephew.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Freda Moring; one brother, Raymond Bugden; and one great-granddaughter, Maggie Amelia.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Rita will be 10:00 AM Friday, April 7, 2017, at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Carl Mann officiating.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Parrish Hall immediately following the service. Burial will be in Eldon Cemetery at 2:30 PM.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Christ Episcopal Church.

Marcidell Spearman, 93, of Burlington, died at 8:55 PM Monday, April 3, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center.

 

Born November 5, 1923, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Chester and Effie Mae Haney Hills. On October 24, 1946, she married Neal Paul Spearman in Burlington. He died on March 26, 2011.

 

Marcy worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant during World War II and retired from Chittenden Eastman Co. with 32 years of service.

 

She was a member of SS Mary & Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington.  She was a member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.  She loved dancing to music of the Big Bands at Eagles Club & Memorial Auditorium.  She enjoyed playing bingo, word find books, and having her morning coffee with friends at Autumn Heights.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Gaylea (Gene) Gaines of Burlington; three sons, Richard Spearman of West Point, Bill (Roxie) Spearman, and Joe Spearman both of Morning Sun; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Shipley of Kansas City, MO; several nieces & nephews; one sister-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, one infant daughter, eldest son, Mike, one sister, Melba Hostetter, and one brother, Lester L. Hills.

 

As per Marcy’s request cremation has been accorded.

 

A private family celebration of life for Mrs. Spearman will be at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home with Father Bill Roush officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

 

Memorials have been established for SS Mary & Patrick Catholic Church & Great River Hospice.

Infant Jackson James Daniel Eid, one month, died at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Great River Medical Center.

Born February 9, 2017 in West Burlington, he was the son of Brandon Eid-Whittemore and Cassandra “Cassie” Glover.

Jackson was a beautiful brown eyed baby boy who entertained his family with his goofy little squeals and squeaks.  Survivors include his parents, Brandon and Cassie; paternal grandparents, Angela Eid of Fort Madison and Leonard Whittemore of Muscatine; maternal grandmother, Gabrielle Knotts of Burlington; paternal great grandparents, Frank and Patricia Eid of Fort Madison; maternal great grandfather, Mark Tucker of Tucson, AZ; Godmother, Kayleigh Butler of Burlington; Godfather, Jacob Blakeman of Fort Madison; aunts and uncles, M. Loki Belyeu and Candy Thomas of Burlington, K.C. Kirk of Davenport, Crystal Glover of Youngstown, Ohio, and Frankie Eid and Amanda Eid of Fort Madison.

The funeral service for infant Jackson Eid will be 7 p.m. Monday, April 10th, at Lunning Chapel.  The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of service.

A memorial has been established for the family.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the funeral service.

Pauline Marshall, 90, of Mount Pleasant, formerly New London, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

 

Per her wishes, there will be no service. Burial will be at a later date in Burge Cemetery in rural New London.  A memorial has been established for the Dover Museum in New London.

Elliott Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

Robert N. Dean, age 95 of Mediapolis, died Wednesday April 5, 2017 at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis.  The son of Harry Webster and Emma Louise (Sauermann) Dean, he was born February 7, 1922 at Morning Sun.  On October 13, 1948 he married Mary Helen Tiemann at Burlington.  He was a graduate of the Morning Sun High School. He was a retired farmer and had also worked at the I.A.A.P. in Middletown and drove a school bus for the Mediapolis Schools.  He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun and was a member of the Mediapolis Masonic Lodge.  He enjoyed playing cards, dancing and was an avid Burlington Bees fan.

Survivors include: his wife of Mediapolis; five children; Edie and Randy Whitaker of Hickory, Kentucky;  Sonny and Ellen Dean of Morning Sun, Iowa;  David and Debby Dean of Karnack, Texas;  Babe Dean and Mark Knippling of Hazelton South Dakota;  Debbie and Terry Swan of Libertyville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

The funeral service will be Saturday April 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, with Pastor Carl Benge officiating.  Interment will follow at the Shinar Cumberland Church Cemetery, Pleasant Grove.  Friends may call on Friday from 3-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Centenary United Methodist Church, Prairie  Ridge Care Center, and Great River Hospice.

Donna Rae McBride, 76, of West Burlington died at 7:55 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, at the Klein Center of GRMC.

Born October 2, 1940 in Kirksville, MO, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Lura D. Coulson Swann.

She married Richard Taylor and they later divorced. On October 26, 1974 in West Burlington she married Robert E. McBride.

Donna was a 1958 graduate of Burlington High School and worked on the production line for Champion Spark Plug for 30 years retiring in 1989.

She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church. She enjoyed oil painting, golfing, singing, and her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Bob; two daughters, Denise Morse and Diane (Randy) Jordan both of Burlington; one son, Douglas (Amy) Taylor of Milliken, CO; two stepdaughters, Robin Rue of Burlington, and Dawn (David) Davolt of Ft. Madison; two stepsons, Glen (Myrna) McBride and Robert McBride both of Oklahoma City, OK.; ten grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, stepbrother and one grandson.

Friends may call after noon on Tuesday, April 11th until 8 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. at Lunning Chapel.

The funeral service for Mrs. McBride will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 12th, in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Joyce Proctor officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington.

A memorial has been established for West Burlington United Methodist Church.

The memorial service for Mr. Arnold M. DeJaynes, 93, of New London, will be held at 1:30 p.m., April 26th at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Pastor Rod Cooper will officiate with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26th and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. According to his wishes his body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Mt. Pleasant.  A memorial has been established.

 

Rosemary Wade, 88, of Burlington, died at 6:00 PM Thursday, April 13, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center.

 

Born April 2, 1929, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of William R. and Clara Keller Hamilton. On February 17, 1949, she married Warren J. Wade in Burlington Iowa. He died August 24, 1990

 

Rosemary worked at National Research and in communications at IAAP for many years.

 

She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. She was a genealogist, and enjoyed bingo, knitting bootie socks, fishing, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, watching John Wayne movies, collecting scarecrows, and cooking spaghetti and angel food cake. She was a St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Teresa  (Mark) Arnold of Burlington; one grandson, Jacob (Jennifer) Arnold of Burlington; one granddaughter, Amanda (Chris) Johnson of Burlington; five great-grandchildren, Madlyn Arnold, Ava Arnold, Eli Johnson, Ren Arnold, Lillian Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marion Orth, and one infant brother.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Monday, April 17, 2017, at  Prugh’s Chapel.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Rosemary Wade will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the St. John Cafeteria following the burial.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. John’s Catholic Church, St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry, and Great River Hospice.

Paul Eugene Spiker, 87, of Burlington, died at 9:30 PM Saturday, April 15, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born July 2, 1929, in Burlington, he was the son of Forrest and Ruth Fielty Spiker. Paul was married to Geraldine Dopler and later divorced.

 

Paul attended classes in the Burlington School System. He did not graduate but went back and got his G.E.D.

 

He was in the Army from March 27, 1951 to March 27, 1953. After basic training in Indiana, he was sent to Germany where he was in the “Tank Corp”, first as a gunner, then as a driver. He was discharged as a Sergeant. Paul said he never had to pull “KP” duty.

 

Paul worked for Iowa Southern Utilities from 1947 until 1963. He also worked for 30 years at the Burlington Case Company.

 

He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He used to deer hunt a lot in Missouri but decided he just didn’t like killing them anymore. He liked making eagle sculptures from wood and plastic.  Paul was a past member of the Moose and Eagles Clubs.  He was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club.  He loved animals, especially all his dogs, cats and birds he took care of over the years.

 

Survivors include his three sons, Michael Paul (Ann Marie) Spiker of Woodstock, GA, twins, Ronnie James (Judy) Spiker of Burlington, Randy Forrest (Nora) Spiker of Burlington; one daughter, Susan (Brett) Flake of Gladstone, IL; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, three half-brothers, Richard, Warren, and Zachary Kuster, and one half-sister Elsie Kuntz.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 21, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the visitation

 

A memorial has been established for the P.A.W. Animal Shelter in Ft. Madison.

Mrs. Edna Belle Koger, 91, of Burlington died at 6:01 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Great River Medical Center.

Born November 14, 1925 in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of William Jackson Lincoln and Rachael Elizabeth (Keller) Lincoln Thie.  On July 5, 1943 she married Claud Koger in Burlington.  He preceded her in death on August 1, 1995.

Edna moved with her family to Burlington at the age of 5.  She was a warehouse clerk at Winegard for over 26 years, retiring in 1988.  In her retirement she worked part time at Wendy’s as a dining room person.

She enjoyed the river, was an avid reader and loved her cats.  She was a loving and very patient lady.

Edna was a member of First Christian Church – Disciples of Christ and was very active in Christian Women’s Fellowship.  She also served as a deaconate.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Magdefrau of Springdale, Arkansas and Norma Thye of Burlington; two sons, Larry Koger of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Clancy Koger of Springdale, Arkansas; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister, Della Laue of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, her parents, step-father, and brother.

The funeral service for Mrs. Koger will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18th at First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ.  Revs. David Yonker and Will Ryan will officiate.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 17th in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

A memorial has been established for First Christian Church – Disciples of Christ.

 

Mrs. Rachel “Betty” McWhortor, 91, of Burlington died at 2:12 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2017, at Danville Care Center.

Born June 8, 1925 in Quincy, Illinois, she was the daughter of James Arthur and Frances May (Smith) Cummings.  She married Mason Cary, they later divorced.  On May 2, 1959 she married Craig E. McWhortor at Kahoka Methodist Church in Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on September 12, 2003.

Mrs. McWhorter was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed ceramics.  After her retirement she and Craig enjoyed working at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO for several years.

Survivors include one son, James M. (Chris) Cary of Danville; three grandchildren, Brad (Amy) Cary, Todd (Debbie) Cary and Suzanne (Tobias) Lunsford; six great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Liz Eichor and Anna Alderson; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister.

A private family funeral service and interment for Mrs. McWhortor will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

James “Jim” Warren Hartman, 70, of Burlington, died at 1:05 PM, Monday, April 17, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington after a very courageous battle with throat cancer.

 

Born May 10, 1946, in Denver, CO, he was the son of Henry Warren and Adeline Elizabeth Sleeth Hartman.

 

He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, CO in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in California & Hawaii, from 1965 until 1967. Following his service, Jim completed his higher education and received a Bachelors in Marketing from the University of Northern Colorado in 1970.

 

On May 31, 1969, he married LuJuan K. Fried in Kingston, IA. They returned to Colorado where they lived until the early ‘80’s, when they relocated back to Iowa with their two children, Tiffini and Ryan.

 

Jim was a very social person, and excelled as a sales executive throughout his life.  His career started in Denver, CO at Vendor Supply Company. After moving back to Iowa, Jim worked at Metromail in Mt. Pleasant, where he received many sales awards. His 35 year career in selling direct mail ended with his retirement from American Spirit Mailing in 2014.

 

He was a former Boy Scout Master, a member of the American Legion Post #52, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie #150. Jim was also a diehard Denver Broncos and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

 

Anyone who knew Jim, knew his love for fine food and wine.  In recent years, Jim’s passion turned to gardening where he would spend his days perfecting their beautiful flower and butterfly gardens. When he wasn’t tending to his yard, Jim could often be found golfing with friends and family.  Fishing was another hobby of Jim’s, whether it was fresh water or deep sea fishing, there wasn’t a fish Jim couldn’t catch!

 

Survivors include his wife, LuJuan; one daughter, Tiffini (Bruce) Brockway of Burlington; one son, Ryan James (Tracey) Hartman of Denver, CO; three grandchildren, Grady Hartman, Adeline Brockway, and Charlotte Hartman; one brother, Henry (Linda) Hartman of Littleton, CO; several sisters and brothers in-law, Vicky & Bill Miller of Mediapolis, Jan & Dave Full of Iowa City, Teena & David Pflum of Minneapolis, MN and William Fried of Olds; and five nieces and eight nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy Richardson, and one grandson, Garrett Brockway.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Hartman will be 11:00 AM, Friday, April 21, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz officiating.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at Big Muddy’s following the service. Jim was a strong advocate for medical research and, following the service, his body will be donated to the University of Iowa for the advancement of science. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Garrett M. Brockway Foundation “Garrett’s Path” and Great River Hospice House.

Sierra Jane Bowdre, age 15 of Wapello, died Monday evening April 17, 2017 as a result of a vehicle accident in Wapello.  The daughter of Dustin Breuer and Angela Bowdre, she was born December 1, 2001 at Muscatine.  She was a freshman at the Wapello High School, where she was very active in sports.  She enjoyed participating in football, soccer, softball and track.  She attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello.

 

Survivors include:  her Mom and Step Dad, Angela Bowdre and Kyle Fletcher of Wapello; her Dad, Dustin Breuer of Wapello; one brother Kade Fletcher of Wapello; grandparents, Barb Foster, Jim Breuer, Jeanie Bass and Randy Bowdre all of Wapello; several aunts, uncles and cousins;  She was preceded in death by her great grandparents, Aunt Jane and Grandma Breuer.

 

A memorial service will be Tuesday April 25, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello, with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating.  Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7:00 p.m. at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, where the family will meet with friends.  A General memorial has been established and will be divided between important causes in Sierra’s life.

James Reed Parlier, 80, of Fort Madison, died at 9:44 AM Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at his home.

 

Born July 12, 1936, in Macon County, IL, he was the son of Charles Edward and Audrey Lincoln Hanks Parlier. He married Frances  Trancoso at Sacred Heart Church, in Fort Madison.

 

James worked at Fruehauf Trucking for twenty-five years and Wabash for three years.

 

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Fort Madison.  He played semi-pro baseball, and enjoyed going out to eat with his family, friends, and his grandchildren.  He was a St. Louis Cardinals and a Green Bay Packers Fan and loved his gum.

 

Survivors include his wife; three sons, James (Debbie) Parlier of Knoxville, IL, Danny (McKenzie) Parlier of Roseville, IL, and Freddie (Kim) Parlier of Fargo, ND; one daughter, Jessica (Rolland) Parlier of Galesburg, IL; five grandchildren, Nicholas Sharp, Michael Weinberg, Zachary Sharp, Brandy Poole, and Kristin Parlier; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Parlier of Fort Madison, and Ronnie Parlier of Abingdon, IL.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charles Parlier and Bruce Parlier, and one son-in-law, Ron McKee.

Morilla J. Lair, 82, of Lomax, Illinois, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday April 18, 2017 at her home. She was born August 3, 1934 in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur Vern and Gladys Luscomb Waterman. On November 5, 1951, she married William “Bill” Lair in New Orleans, Louisiana. He preceded her in death on September 30, 1989.

 

Mrs. Lair lived all of her adult life in Lomax. She was employed as a corrections officer for Des Moines County Correctional Center in Burlington, Iowa for several years. She was an avid bingo player, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Jeri (Gene) Karger and Doris Donaldson, both of Lomax, IL, Diana (Pete) Hernandez of Montrose, IA, seven grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Ellrona Van Hyning and Thelma Todd.

Richard “Dick” Diewold, 85, of Burlington, died at 6:25 PM Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born December 11, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Arthur Edward and Bertha Helen Snyder Diewold.  On April 11, 1953, he married Shirley Ann Dickson in Burlington. She died October 26, 2011.

 

Dick, along with his dad, and brother, Tom, was co-owner and operator of the Arion Restaurant for about 50 years retiring in 1986.

 

He was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

He was a U.S. Naval Reserve Veteran with several deployments including Cuba.

 

 

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, and a 4th degree Black Knight in the Knights of Columbus.  He was a member of Blackhawk Gun Club and Burlington Sportman’s Club.  He was a longtime volunteer supporting the Mississippi Valley Callers Association.  He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, spending time with his wife at the cabin along the Mississippi River and with the boys around the “round table”.  It didn’t matter if it was the Chicago Cubs or the St. Louis Cardinals, he enjoyed watching baseball.  He enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, keeping abreast of world news, and watching military history programs.  He was a charter member of the Arion chapter of the Wild Wyoming Bunch (poker club).  He was quick-witted and had a wonderful sense of humor.  His pride and joy was spending time with his wife and his family.

 

Dick is survived by his children: daughter Linda (Joe) Paule of Boulder, CO; three sons, Daniel Diewold and Curt (Martha) Diewold, both of Burlington, IA and Mike (Tina) Diewold of West Burlington, IA; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie (Bob) Cohenour and Pat (Garry) Haack, both of Burlington, IA; and a brother, Jim Diewold, of Southbury, CT.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, a brother and a sister.

 

Per his wishes, his remains will be cremated and a private interment will be held.  A Celebration of His Life will take place at Big Muddy’s at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Notre Dame Foundation.

She collected hummingbird memorabilia, enjoyed animals, particularly cats and dogs, going to casinos, and collecting and listening to Irish Tenor music.

 

Survivors include one brother, Alan A. Brown of Cedar Rapids; five sisters, Jo (Gene) Wallace of Des Moines, Cathy (Dwight) Brown of Burlington, Barbara Van Hook of Mount Pleasant, Linda Simmons of Burlington, and Bonnie Rice of Burlington; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Irene Farlow; three brothers, Marvin, Dick and Phillip Brown; and one infant brother, Charles.

Born March 11, 1945, in Minneapolis, MN, he was the son of Gerrold and Janell D. Smith Cook.

 

He lived for over 30 years at the Mediapolis Care Facility. Denny loved the St. Louis Cardinals, sardines and chocolate.

 

Survivors include his half-brother, Marc (Anne) Cook of Lombard, IL; one step-brother, Sam Colletta of Lincolnville, IL; and two half-sisters, Ila (George) Onofrio of Northville, MI and Patti (Jerry) Teichman of MN.

Eric Burton Whitmore, 37, of Burlington, died Sunday, April 23, 2017, in Burlington.

 

Born October 3, 1979, in Burlington, he was the son of Larry L. and Helen Ryals Whitmore.

 

Eric was a union construction worker.

 

He was a graduate of Burlington High School.

 

He was a member of the Laborers’ International Union. Eric enjoyed working on 4 wheelers, fishing, mushroom hunting, going out on the river, and being outdoors. He enjoyed helping and visiting with his grandmother.  He was a New York Giants fan.  Most of all he loved spending time with his son.

 

Survivors include his parents; one son, Landen Whitmore of Burlington; his grandmother, Joan Ryals of Burlington; two brothers, Chad (Heather) Whitmore of West Burlington, and Shawn (Jessica Andrews) Whitmore of Burlington; and several nieces & nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, and maternal grandfather.

Evelyn Lorraine Walsh, 98, of Burlington, died at 4:02 PM Monday, April 24, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born January 8, 1919, in Wever, she was the daughter of Fred and Mayme Koestner Hartman. On August 30, 1940, she married Francis H. “Snook” Walsh in Burlington, Iowa.  He died March 30, 2007.

 

Evelyn retired from Sheaffer Pen Company.

 

She was a 1937 graduate of Ft. Madison High School.

 

She was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, the Altar and Rosary Society, and St. Patrick’s ladies card club.  She enjoyed traveling, crafts, making baby bonnets and socializing.  She cherished time with her family especially her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include one son, Gary (Mary) Walsh of Burlington; four daughters, Romajean (James) Messer of Mount Pleasant, Gloria (Ted) Gooch of Tucson, AZ, Lyn (Scott) Salisbury of West Burlington; and Lori (Ron) Steward of Burlington; one son-in-law, Carl Carman of Burlington; 22 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren and; several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Rosemary Carman and two grandsons, Randy Rettig and Troy Hutchinson; one great-great-grandaughter, Remi Helling.

Mr. Dwight Merton Fry, 57, of Burlington died at 5:42 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born December 13, 1959 in Greenfield, Iowa he was the son of C.D. and Clara (Swim) Fry.

Mr. Fry worked in construction for the past 25 years as an iron worker, at Carl A. Nelson, S&G Construction and as a handyman.  He was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Eagles Club and the Iron Workers Union.  He enjoyed helping others, working, fishing, and camping.

Survivors include his life companion, Mary Ann Burford of Burlington; one son, Mike (Meghan Smith) Fry of Monmouth, Illinois; one daughter, Melinda Fry also of Monmouth; one grandson, Bentley Fry; his mother, Clara Fry of Creston; two step daughters, Christine (Brett) Giberson and Nicole Burford; one step son, Matt Burford; two step grandchildren, Kayla and Kinsley; one brother, Daryl Fry of Monmouth; one nephew; and his dog, Gus.

He was preceded in death by his father, a sister-in-law Pam, and a nephew Aaron.

Millie Bell, 100, of Burlington, died at 10:12 AM, Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born July 26, 1916, in Carthage, IL, she was the daughter of John Merle and Ruby Ethel Dorothy Hart. On February 26, 1945, she married James W. “Jim” Bell in Monroe City, MO. He died on November 24, 2013.

 

She was a 1936 graduate of West Point High School.

 

Millie worked at Sheaffer Pen Corporation, I.A.A.P. Ordinance Plant, Ross Manufacturing, and Winegard Company.

 

She was a member of Parkside Baptist Church. She was a past president of the Democratic Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Democrat Hall of Fame, and the Organic Garden Club.  She enjoyed sewing, gardening and organizing the craft shows at the auditorium the first Saturday and Sunday of December.

 

Survivors include  three sons, James (Cheryl) Bell Jr. of Danville, Wayne Bell of Burlington, and Darrell (Rose) Bell of Lomax, IL; two daughters, Jean (Gary) Reeves of Burlington, and Susie (Tom) Albert of West Concord, MN; one sister, Frances Hart of Fort Madison; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; three brothers; three sons, Kenny Bell, Daniel Bell, and Ernie Bell; one daughter, Janice Schneider; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

Thomas Edward Jennings, age 69, of Mt. Union, died Tuesday evening, April 25, 2017, at his home.  The son of Harvey and Geraldine Walsh Jennings, he was born on April 6, 1948 in Burlington.  He married Sharon Connolly on June 9, 1968.

 

He graduated from Winfield-Mt. Union High School in 1967.  Thomas served for 20 years in the US Air Force and retired as a Master Sargent.  He worked for 28 years with the civil service through Offit Air Force Base in Omaha.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW.

 

His grandchildren were the joy of his life along with enjoying time spent with family.  He also enjoyed anything mechanical, airplanes, and the opportunities of flying all over Europe.

 

His family includes his wife, Sharon; a son, Thomas Edward Jennings, Jr. (Jackie) of Winfield; seven grandchildren, AJ, Brooke, Erica, Emma, Brian, Amber, and David; one great grandson, Mason; four brothers, Michael Jennings of Winfield, Tim Jennings (Sandy) of Omaha, Nebraska, Mark Jennings of Pacific Junction, and John Jennings of Fairfield; and five sisters, Susan Steffins (Dean) of Missouri, Pat Wolf (John) of Cedar Rapids, Veronica McBride of Crawfordsville, Regina Wilson (Ray) of New London, and Mary Snyder (Eldon) of Iowa City.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Brian and Michael; a brother Stanley; and a sister, Elizabeth.

 

The family will meet with friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with the funeral ceremony to follow at 12:00 noon.  Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Wapello VFW.  A lunch gathering will follow at the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello.

Tom Stevens, 80, of Burlington, died at 2:05 PM Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born July 1, 1936, in Burlington, he was the son of Owen Andrew and Helen Madelyn Smith Stevens. On February 6, 1965, he married Connee Alexander in Burlington.

 

Tom was the store manager for Hy-Vee Food Stores for 31 years and retired in 1991.

 

He graduated from Burlington Catholic High School in 1954.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

 

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, president of the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and he also volunteered at Great River Medical Center. Tom was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, loved attending auctions, traveling to Las Vegas, and working on his yard; but most of all he cherished his time with his family.

Irwin Harold “Ernie” Garrels, 93, of Danville, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.

Maxine Ellen “Rosie” Cornick, 87, of West Burlington, died at 4:30 AM Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born May 22, 1929, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Job and Grace Hardman Keltner. On December 24, 1958, she married Ebb Duane Cornick in Fairfield.

 

Rosie worked at Sylvania for 11 years, then worked ten years as an in home daycare provider. She retired from being a certified nursing assistant after 37 years of devoted service.

 

She was a 1946 graduate of Grandview High School.

 

She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church. Rosie was a Cardinal’s, Burlington Bee, and SCC Blackhawks fan. She loved her kids and grandkids, and enjoyed to play sports and cards.

 

Survivors include one son, Marty J. Cornick of West Burlington; one daughter, Christy Sue (Barry) Runyon of West Des Moines; three grandchildren, Cody Runyon, Kyle (Katy) Runyon, and Dusti Petersen; one great grandchild, Ke’Lyn Petersen and one on the way, two brothers, Carl Henry Keltner of Dunedin, FL, Job Keltner, Jr. of Burlington; one sister, Dorothy L. Webb of Wapello, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Donold, Harlan, Clarence and one sister Jolene Pogemiller.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The memorial luncheon for Ms. Cornick will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 6, 2017, will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

Ware Hall Taylor, 89, of West Burlington died at 5:27 PM Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

 

Born December 19, 1927, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Ware S. and Ruth Hall Taylor. On August 17, 1955, he married Theresa Beach in Tucson, AZ.

 

Hall graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1945. He attended Drake University with a B.A. Degree in Business Administration.

 

In 1950, he started farming and continued to farm for 45 years. After retiring, he moved to West Burlington.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Navy Block Island ship as an Aviation Electronics Technician.

 

He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, and traveling with his wife. He loved to go bicycling with his family, especially his granddaughters.

 

Survivors include his wife, Theresa; two daughters, Cheryl Taylor of Las Vegas, NV and Barbara McKasson of West Burlington; two granddaughters, Jessica and Melissa of Burlington; and three great-grandchildren, Lathan, Derrick Jr., and Laylah.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Jean (Molly) Grove; one brother-in-law, Daryl Grove; and one son-in-law, Dennis McKasson.

 

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Monday, May 1, 2017 where the family will receive friends at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Taylor will be 2:00 PM Monday, May 1, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Father Bill Roush officiating.Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery in Farmington at 4:30 PM.

 

A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Lloyd Jerome Schofield, age 93, of Mediapolis, died Thursday evening, April 27, 2017, at his home.  The son of Glenn and Elizabeth Minch Schofield, he was born on September 20, 1923 in Burlington.  Lloyd married Alice Rock on December 12, 1942 in Burlington.  She preceded him in death on March 23, 2011.

 

He attended schools in Burlington and Yarmouth.  He served in the US Air Force during WW II.  He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis and the Mediapolis American Legion.  Lloyd had been active with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and more recently with the Steamboat Senior Center and Silver Singers.  He enjoyed mowing, gardening, his grandchildren, and dancing.

 

His family includes two daughters, Marilyn Perry of Mediapolis and Susan Hartmann of Everly; a son, Ron Schofield of Helena, Montana; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marge Schofield of Burlington; and a friend, Phyllis Greulich of Burlington.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; a son, David; a sister; and two brothers.

 

The funeral ceremony for Lloyd Schofield will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 1, 2017, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis with Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating.  Burial of his cremains will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery.  The family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.

 

Memorial gifts will benefit Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service.

Martha Anne Thompson Fritz, 85, of Burlington, died 12:35 a.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Blair House.

Born August 18, 1931 in Henderson County, Illinois, she was the daughter of George M. and Carol A. (Kyle) Thompson.  She married Warren G. Fritz on November 6, 1953; he died January 9, 2006.

Martha was a secretary for Mabel Rolf Real Estate for over 14 years, retiring in 2002.  She was a member of Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene.

She enjoyed sewing, baking, spending time with family and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda (Gary) Cline of Burlington, Kathy (Michael) DeLong of Des Moines, IA, and Cindy (Gary) Gooch of Burlington; 21 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one brother, Kenny (Carol) Thompson of Carthage, IL; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Wayne Fritz, one daughter, Ellen Fritz, and one brother, William Thompson.

The funeral service for Mrs. Fritz will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 4th in Lunning Chapel.  Pastor Ron Jewett will officiate.  Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday.

A memorial has been established for Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene.

 

Billy Dwayne Mellinger, 83, of Burlington, died at 4:05 AM Friday, April 28, 2017, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

 

Born February 15, 1934, in Burlington, IA he was the son of Fred William and Sophia Elizabeth Stoller Mellinger. On February 21, 1953 Bill married Mary Elizabeth Canfield;

she preceded him in death six years ago.

 

Bill entered the USAF in April 1953 at the age of 19 and worked on B-47 bomber aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. Four years later in July 1957 with their 4 th child on the way Bill left the Air Force and returned to Burlington. Bill’s career thereafter was driving buses for the Burlington City Transit from 1957 to 1965. Bill then became the Driver for the Burlington Bees baseball team, driving the bus and players to away games as well as to each year’s spring training in Mesa, Arizona. After the season ended in 1972 Bill then began driving for Continental Trailways which he did for some 35 years and retired 8 years ago with an impressive record of completing over 2 million accident-free driving miles for the company.

 

Bill and his first wife, Mary, had six children which kept him very busy; twin sons named Ronald and Donald born in 1953, Danny in 1954, Christine in 1956, Cheryl in 1962 and Billy Frederick in 1965 was still born. Both Danny and Billy have preceded Bill in death in 1972 and 1965. Bill later married Kathy Kapraun (Mellinger, Trueblood) and they had one daughter, Corrine Elizabeth Mellinger, exactly 34 years to the day after the twins were born.

 

Survivors include his two sons, Ronald, and wife Ping, Fort Meyers, FL; Donald, his wife Liwen, Sacramento, CA; Christine (Mellinger) Rollins, San Tan Valley, AZ; Cheryl (Mellinger) Watkins, Gilbert, AZ; and Corrine Mellinger, Burlington, Iowa; brother Dick Mellinger, Burlington, IA; sister Loretta (husband Bill) Dixon, The Villages, FL; sister Marjorie (husband Jim) Roth, Waukee, IA; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; many nieces and nephews.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Sophia Mellinger, first wife Mary, and two sons Danny Ray and Billy Frederick Mellinger.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, May 5, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Mellinger will be 10:00 AM Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for an outdoor remembrance bench, which will reside out back of the Burlington Care Center so residents and visitors can watch the dog park activities.

Juanita L. Johnson , 94, of Burlington, died at 10:15 pm Friday, April 28, 2017, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

 

Born October 20, 1922, in Farmington, Iowa, she was the daughter of  Volney and Goldie Therme. On March 27, 1947, she married John Lindsey Johnson in Fort Madison. He later passed on April 8, 2014. She was the youngest of four children; she had two older brothers and one older sister. Juanita went to school in Farmington and in her high school years she played basketball for the school. In her senior year her team went to state. Juanita graduated in 1941 from Farmington High School. Juanita and John married after he returned from WWII, serving as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps. They had two daughters named Brenda and Candice. They have given Juanita 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandkids. Juanita and her husband had been married 60 years before he passed away.

 

Juanita worked at several different places in her life. She worked at Shaeffer Pen during WWII, and after at Montgomery Wards, Sylvania and Winegard. She then retired from JC Penney’s after 20 years of service in 1987.

 

Juanita and her family enjoyed camping. Besides camping, Juanita liked to make quilts, tole paint, cross-stitch, and put together puzzles with her husband. She was also a very active member of the First Christian Church. Her family liked to gather at her home for holiday and birthday meals, because she was a very good cook. Juanita called the Blair House her home for eight years. Her advice to the younger generation is to work hard at whatever you do.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Candy Balzer of West Burlington, Brenda (Chris) Williams of Burlington; five grandchildren, Phillip (Marcia) Dickman, Timothy (Trisha) Dickman, Angela Runnells, Steven (Tammy) Dickman, and Jennifer (Brad) Hoenig, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Manford and David Therme; one sister, Verna Johnson; and one grandson, Zach Ba1zer.

 

A graveside service will be held in Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington at a later date.

Mrs. Lola R. Paray, 51, of Lomax, IL passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017 at her home.

She was born August 2, 1965 in LaHarpe, IL, the daughter of Raymond and Brenda Tate Pulley. On June 4, 1998 she married Steven Paray in Lomax.

Lola was a 1983 graduate of the Dallas City High School and attended Robert Morris College in Carthage, IL. She was a clerk and assistant manager at Home Oil, Circle K and Casey’s in Burlington, IA. She loved music and enjoyed singing.

She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Kortni Pulley of Lomax, her mother, Brenda Pulley of Lomax, two step-daughters, Kelli Walker of St. Louis, MO and Joy Paray of Auburn, IN and 5 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Dean Anderson, 77, of Burlington, died at 3:00 AM Sunday, April 30, 2017, at the New London Care Initiatives Nursing Facility.

 

Born July 5, 1939, in Burlington, he was the son of Francis Peter and Mary Elizabeth Collett Anderson. On September 1, 1963, he married Judith Marie Carlile in Burlington.

 

He was a 1957 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

After high school he worked for IRC Company and Precision Engineering as a design engineer.  He then started H. Dean Anderson Company where he did custom machine design, and Dean Anderson Racing Equipment for over 40 years. Many of his machine designs held patents for manufacturing purposes and he continued to offer engineering consultation after starting his companies.

 

He had a private pilots license and enjoyed flying the planes he owned. He was a member of EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and built his own helicopter. Dean also enjoyed sprint car and midget racing. He spent many years as a racecar driver, team owner, and sponsored many drivers. He was gifted with an inventive mind and built many impressive projects throughout the years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and always said they were his greatest achievements. Anyone who knew Dean, knew how devoted he was to his wife and how much they loved each other.

 

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Judy Anderson; two daughters, Dena Spooner of Ankeny and Toi (John) VanEss of Seymour, WI; one son, Kip (Lori) Anderson of Burlington; five grandchildren, Ashley, Frank, Henry, Chloe and Carson; two brothers, Bob (Barb) Anderson of Burlington, & Roger (Sandy) Anderson of Indianapolis, IN; four sisters-in-law, Linda Anderson, Sherry Anderson, Nancy McKee, & Karen Anderson all of Burlington; and 11 nieces & nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Jim, Jerry, Donny, & David Anderson, one sister, Lois Anderson and one nephew, Don Anderson.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

Per his wishes, there will be no visitation or services.

Eileen Wick Meagher, 76, of New London, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at her home.

 

 

Survivors include her husband; son, Shawn Meagher of Macomb, IL; daughter Patty Keagle (Mark Robinson) of Mt. Pleasant; two granddaughters, Arial Keagle and Georgia Meagher;  brother, Richard (Marilyn) Wick of New London; and sister, Nancy ( “Red”) McDowell of Ottumwa; and nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, son Tim, brother Robert, and nephews Tony and Mike Wick.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, May 5, 2017 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Father John Stack will officiate the service with inurnment to follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.  According to her wishes, she has been cremated.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 Friday morning at the chapel, with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. A memorial has been established to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Iowa City.

Betty C. Morlan, 64, of Burlington, formerly of Wever, died 2:50 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born on December 11, 1952 in Fort Madison, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Clothier) Benson.  She married Ronald L. Morlan on November 4, 1972 in Fort Madison.

Betty was a cosmetologist and owner of Reflections Hair Care in West Burlington for 20 years.

She was a member of First United Church of Christ where she served as Consistory and Chairman of Personnel.  Betty served on the Burlington Steamboat Days board for over 28 years, serving as President in 1999.  She was instrumental in the Senior Day special event and many other special events throughout her many years as a volunteer.  She was currently serving on the Burlington Civic Music Board of Directors and enjoyed attending their yearly concert series.  Betty loved all kinds of music, especially blues and jazz.

She traveled extensively with her husband Ron and the “Three Musketeers”.  She loved to golf and spend time with the “Glitter Gals” and her extended family of friends.

Betty was a vibrant, colorful and unforgettable soul.  She had a smile that would light up a room.  She will be missed.

Betty is survived by her husband, Ron Morlan of Burlington; her constant companion and cherished pet “Carmella”; two brothers, Gary (Mary Jo) Benson of Denver, CO and Tim Benson of Fort Madison; brother-in-law, Michael (Shirley) Morlan of Moberly, MO; two sisters-in-law, Estel Ann Sawvell of Dubuque and Rosemary Morlan of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

The memorial funeral service for Betty will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 9th in Lunning Chapel.  Pastor JudyAnn Morse will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until the time of services.

 

John Eugene Richards, 95, of Burlington, died at 8:10 AM Thursday, May 4, 2017, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

 

Born May 28, 1921, in Allerton, IA, he was the son of Harold Elwood and Frederika Ann Smith  Richards. On September 7, 1941, he married Florence Wilma “Fritz” Menneke in Grant City, MO. She died May 11, 2012.

 

John worked as a semi-truck driver for Arledge Transfer & Central States for 45 years.

 

He was a member for the First Church of the Nazarene, in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas. He taught Sunday School for many years, and enjoyed doing yard work.

 

Survivors include two sisters, Francis Collins of Patacia, OH & Lelia (Ron) Wood of Overland Park,Kansas; many nieces & nephews; and several friends.

 

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister.

 

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM with the family to receive friends from noon until 1:00 PM, Monday May, 8, 2017 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The graveside committal service for Mr. Richards will be at 1:00 P.M. Monday, May 8, 2017 at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Richards officiating.

Elizabeth M. Robinson, 86, of Burlington, died at 4:15 AM Friday, May 5, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born March 10, 1931, in Chattanooga, TN, she was the daughter of Hosea and Maritta Goiter Stephens.

 

Elizabeth was a production operator at Champion Spark Plug for 30 years.

 

She was a graduate of Dayton’s Hair Design.

 

She was a member of Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship. She enjoyed going to the Golden Corral, riding in a car, sitting on her patio, talking, and going to church.  Most of all she enjoyed being with her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include two sons, Delbert Stephens of Burlington, & Richard (Denise) Oldham of Topeka, KS; Ray Robinson of Burlington; many grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Earl, one daughter Teri, and one great-grandson, C.J.

 

No formal visitation is planned.  Friends may call from noon until 5:00 PM, Monday, May 8, 2017, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Elizabeth Robinson will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship with Reverend Lawrence L. Manson officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the burial.
