Tiffany Earlean Owens, 27, of Burlington, passed away at 6:30 AM Sunday, May 7, 2017, at her home in Burlington.

 

Born November 4, 1989, in Chanute, KS, she was the daughter of Todd Earl and Kimberly Raelean Tilman Owens.

 

Tiffany was a process technician at Shearer’s Foods.

 

Red enjoyed music, dancing, drawing, art, and her job at Shearer’s Foods; but what she loved most of all was her daughter, her family, and her friends who loved her.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Kimora Owens; her father & mother, Guy and Kimberly Williams of Burlington; seven brothers, Derek (Christy) Walls of Iola, KS, Michael Johnson of Topeka, KS, T’Oddre (Allison) Owens, Guy Williams, Levi Martin, Xavier Williams, and Xander Williams all of Burlington; three sisters, Morgan (Mike) Owens-Holsinger of Noel, MO, Jesse (Andrew) Johns of Lansing, KS, and Khanishah Williams of Burlington; her maternal grandmother, Darlean Totman of Chanute, KS; paternal great-grandmother, Hattie Mae Williams of Sunflower, MS; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts and uncles. One nephew and one niece with whom she had a special bond, Hendrix & Houston Owens.

 

She was preceded in death by her dad, Todd Earl Owens.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM, Thursday, May 11, 2017, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Ms. Owens will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 12, 2017, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship with Reverend Lawrence L. Manson officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for Kimora’s continued education.

Rebecca Ilene Mehaffy, 64, of Burlington, died at 8:30 AM Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at her home.

 

Born September 14, 1952, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Lloyd W. and Marcelle Ilene Riemann Brown. On April 14, 1974, she married Steve Mehaffy in Mediapolis.  They later divorced.

 

Becky worked at Winegard Co. for about six years, operated a home daycare, and was a teacher for the Burlington School District for twelve years.

 

She was a 1970 graduate of Mediapolis High School. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa Wesleyan College.

 

She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and Burlington Transplant Organization.  She volunteered at Mediapolis Schools. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.  She was a wonderful and devoted Bammo and Grandma Choo Choo.  She was always there for people.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Jill (Eric) Mehaffy-Nalley of Sperry; one son, Nathan (Laura) Mehaffy of Danville; five grandchildren, Allison, Henry, Lily, Dane, Marin; two sisters, Roberta (Terry) Barngrover and Renee (David) Gerling, both of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, May 15, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Mehaffy will be 11:00 AM Monday, May 15, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Terry Vance officiating.   A time of food and fellowship will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene following the service.  Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

 

Memorials have been established to Des Moines County Humane Society and Iowa City Transplant Association.

Alice Marie Johnson, 42, of West Burlington, died at 4:20 PM Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at her home.

 

Born November 18, 1974, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William “Bill” and Elaine Hank Johnson.

 

Alice was a stay at home mother, raising her 3 boys full time.

 

She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, and her dogs, Cain, Chloe, Callie, and Coco.

 

Survivors include her parents; her fiancé, Steve Hardy of West Burlington; three sons, Jacob (Samantha Smith) Johnson of Morning Sun, Jordan (Bailey Murphy) Johnson of Burlington, Synjine (Miranda Rea) Johnson of Burlington; 1 grandchild on the way; and one brother, James (Chris Unruh) Johnson of West Des Moines.

 

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation or services.

Jace Brenan Garner, 16, of Stronghurst and Danville, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017, in Danville, and as a result of his death he was able to donate his tissues to help others.

 

Born July 3, 2000, in Mississippi, he was the son of  Terry and Sharon Garner.

 

Jace attended Danville Community High School and would have graduated next year. He planned to join the ROTC Program through the Air Force. He thought about attending the University of Iowa, but changed his mind to the University of West Florida, so he could live with his cousin and get a dog.

 

He worked as a Life Guard at the Burlington YMCA.

 

He attended Joy Baptist Church in Fort Madison. He was involved in swimming, Cross Country, Track, Golf, Art Show and Quiz Bowl. Jace enjoyed scuba diving, hunting, fishing, bow hunting, collecting knifes, traveling, playing with the family dogs, playing basketball and ping-pong. He was a self taught guitarist and liked to help others learn to play. But most of all, Jace enjoyed spending time with his family and goofing around with his best friend Wayne.

 

Survivors include his parents, Terry and Sharon Garner of Stronghurst, IL; great-grandmother, Margaret Search of Stronghurst; one aunt, Stacy (Ken Laffoon) Johnson of Danville; one brother Brandon (Kelsey) Garner of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Ciara Garner of North Carolina; one nephew, Brantley Garner; two cousins, Samantha and Sydney Johnson both of Danville, and many other friends and relatives.

 

He is preceded in death by his cat Midnight.

 

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM with the family to receive friends from noon until 4:00 PM Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Harmony Bible Church in rural Danville.

 

The funeral service for Jace Garner will be 4:00 PM Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Harmony Bible Church in rural Danville with Pastor Earl Beal officiating.  Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

Joanne Evans, 80, of Burlington, died at 12:48 PM Friday, May 12, 2017, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

 

Born February 1, 1937, in Milton, IA, she was the daughter of Lial Jesse and Florence E. Baldwin Humphrey. On October 25, 1952, she married Donald Eugene Evans in Milton, IA.

 

Joanne worked for 20 years as a bookkeeper and 20 years of nursing in long term care facilities.

 

She enjoyed gardening, camping and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.  She was a member of the ladies of the Moose Lodge and Eagles Club ladies auxiliary.

 

Survivors include her husband, Donald; two sons, Rick (Lynne) Evans of Sperry, and Mike (Penny) Evans of Burlington; one daughter, Cheryl A. (Chip) Carlson of Morton, IL; six grandchildren, Chad Evans, Kyle Evans, Harry (Kathleen) Carlson, Ian Carlson, Derek (Savanna) Evans, Kali (Shawn) Schwabe; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Susan (Roger) Schaeffer of Prophetstown, IL, and Sandy (Steve) Hainline of Bonaparte; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Shirley Baxter, one niece, Michelle, and one nephew Richard.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Mary Adelaide Jones, 95, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died Sunday, January 15, 2017.

 

Mary Adelaide was born January 10, 1922, in Shickley, NE, she was the daughter of Elmer and Ramona Troupe Hansen. They later moved to Lincoln where she attended school. After a year at Ward Belmont in Nashville, TN, Mary Adelaide attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1942. Soon after she moved to California to work “for the war effort”. While working at Lockheed in Bakersfield she met the love of her life, Norman Nelson Jones, Jr. a tall, dark, and handsome Army Air pilot from Burlington, IA. They were married on November 6, 1943, in Lincoln, Nebraska and spent the rest of WWII moving some twenty times from airbase to airbase. Norm and Mary Ad, as he called her from the beginning, settled in Burlington where he went to work for his dad in the family business, Drake Hardware Co, and their family grew to include four children.

 

Mary Ad was actively involved with her community from the beginning: Hetta Gilbert Society, The Burlington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Civic Music, First Congregational Church and more. She enjoyed her bridge club, Ladies Day golf and dances at the Burlington Golf Club, picnics and parties at Crystal Lake, and Panhellenic. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta for 75 years attending yearly gatherings until 2015. At age forty, she earned her pilots license which she maintained for 25 years.

 

She and Norm traveled extensively both nationally and abroad. In later years, Mary Ad and Norm made regular stays in Colorado and South Florida.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Jessica (Chaz Leary) Jones of New Orleans, LA, Betsy (Bill) Williams of Baton Rouge, LA, & Sarah (Wally) Krall of Lander, WY; one daughter-in-law, Helen Chopko Jones; one sister-in-law, Harriet Jones Chappuies; ten grandchildren, Josh Leary, Johanna Wiseman, Jed Paulson, Jesse Wiseman, Sarah Riley, Elizabeth Williams, Andrew Hunter, Nathan Hunter, Wyatt Williams, & Mary Devin Hunter; eleven great-grandchildren; two nephews, David Chappuies, & John Chappuies and their families.

 

Besides her husband of 61 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Norman N. Jones, III.

 

The Graveside Committal Service for Mary Jones will be 11:00 AM Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Dean Lowe Marshall, 91, of Iowa City and formerly of Burlington died at 6:57 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at Country View Senior Living in North Liberty.

Born July 30, 1925 in Columbus Junction, he was the son of Dwight and E. Beatrice (Lowe) Marshall.  On July 29, 1950 he married Margaleen Ann Redlinger in Washington.

Mr. Marshall graduated from Columbus High School.  He received a BA degree from Cornell College at Mt. Vernon, Iowa; and an MA degree in history, political science and English from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  He taught History and English at Letts High School, Olds High School, and at Burlington Senior High School.  He later was employed as a teller with Farmers and Merchants Bank for five years.  In 1959 he qualified as a Securities Salesman and won many awards from his efforts in this field.  He retired in 2005.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Iowa City, and a former member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington.  He enjoyed sports, especially the Cubs and the Hawkeyes; crossword puzzles, reading books, and in later years watching his grandchildren participate in sports.

Surviving are his wife; son, Gregory of Coralville, Iowa; daughters, Susan (Randy) Pflum of Burlington, and Julie (David) Lee of Woodbury, Minnesota; and five grandchildren, Tyler, Brian and Devin Pflum; Anna (Jarod) Morrissette and Trevor Lee.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, May 15th, at Lunning Chapel.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16th, at SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church.  Rev. Father Marty Goetz will be the celebrant and Rev. Father Mike Phillips the concelebrant.  The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music.  Interment will be in Columbus City Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Hope Haven, SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Barbara Jean Morris, age 83, of Wapello, died Monday evening, May 15, 2017, at Wapello Specialty Care.  The daughter of Joe and Mildred Moore Kinsley, she was born on March 28, 1934 in Louisa County.  Barbara married Chester Morris on December 22, 1951 in Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on February 6, 2015.

 

She had worked at Louis Rich in West Liberty, Heinz in Muscatine, and Thatcher Glass in Muscatine.  Barbara was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Wapello.  She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, and puzzles.

 

Her family includes two sons, Ace & Susan Morris and Mark & Chris Morris both of Wapello; a daughter, Bonnie & Kevin Stanbro of Muscatine; six grandchildren; a step granddaughter; six great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Myen of Muscatine; and a brother, Kermit ‘Butch’ & Norma Kinsley of Wapello.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chester; a brother, Charlie; and an infant sister, Jane.

 

The funeral ceremony for Barbara Morris will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 22, 2017, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating.  Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery.

 

The family will meet with friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

 

Memorial gifts will benefit the Briggs Civic Center.

Nina Deloras Hall, age 84 died peacefully on May 15, 2017 at the Morning Sun Care Center.  She was born May 23, 1932 in rural Morning Sun, the daughter of Maurice and Gladys (Nichols) Kerr.  She married Donald Hall on October 23, 1952, they later divorced. She was a graduate of the Morning Sun High School and was a member of the Morning Sun United Methodist Church.

She worked at Sylvania for many years and also worked at Jack Hamilton’s Clubhouse, Iowa State Bank, Caseys and worked as a CNA for many years at the Morning Sun Care Center. She was an avid reader and loved to crochet.  She was well known for her home baked cookies and pies.  She would especially love giving her treats away to anyone who would help her throughout the year,  always giving to someone who needed it more than her.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Debra Beard, Darcie (Gary) Wixom and Denice (Sam) Richenberger all of Morning Sun; two sister, Nancy McElhinney of Morning Sun and Juanita McMullen of Kansas; six grandchildren, Blake Wixom, Bronson Wixom, Ethan Richenberger, Eric Beard, Ruthann Hamlin and Michelle Monnier. 11 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.

 

Cremation has been accorded.  The family will meet with friends Friday May 19, 2017 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning sun.  Interment in the Elmwood Cemetery will be at a later date.  A general memorial has been established in her name.

 

Gary Wayne Hall, 62, of Burlington, died at 7:09 PM Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born September 21, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert and Janet L. Freeman Hall. He married Thelma Myers, they later divorced. He married Susan Grinstead, they later divorced.

 

Gary worked as a self employed HVAC and had several rental properties.

 

He enjoyed music, wood working, gardening, cooking, vintage motorcycles enthusiast and working on anything that needed to be fixed. Gary was an outdoors man, he liked fishing, boating, bird watching and spending time at his cabin on the Mississippi River.

 

Survivors include his mother; one daughter, Jodi (Eric) Anderson of Burlington; two sons, Kent (Megan) Hall of West Burlington, Jayden Hall of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Lauren Anderson, Lucas Anderson, Kirsten Hall, and Conner Hall; one sister, Sheila Royer of Troy, MO.

 

He is preceded in death by his father and one son, Chad Hall.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The memorial service for Mr. Hall will be 10:00 AM Friday, May 19, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor David Yonker officiating.

 

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House and Des Moines County Humane Society.

Fay Franklin Russell, 71, of Biggsville, IL, died at 11:45 AM Saturday, May 13, 2017, at his home.

 

Born in 1945, in LaHarpe, IL, he was the son of Delmar B. and Lois Jean Burkhart Russell. On August 22, 1964, he married Suzanne Kay Albin in Biggsville.

 

Fay was a farmer and loved his work. Especially working with his brothers everyday.

 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hunting for arrowheads. He collected coins, toy tractors, duck calls and decoys, and many antiques. He also loved to give RTV and tractor rides to his grandchildren.

 

Survivors include his wife; his children, Renee (Norman) Sills of Burlington, Gary (Terri) Russell of Biggsville, Jennifer (Tim) Collier of Humble, TX, Julie (Jeff) Meyer of Stronghurst,  and Joni (Chris) Gatch of Weatherford, TX; two brothers, Larry (Pat) Russell of Gladstone, Gail (Diana) Russell of Biggsville; four sisters, Delma (Nick) Plackett of Galesburg, Nancy (Larry) Gapen of Carmen, Janet (Lloyd) Jacobs of New London, Harriet Russell of Stronghurst; 10 grandchildren, Josh, Amanda, Ryan, Austin, Chloe, Taryn, Trey, Jenner, Tegen, Kyle; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

A celebration of life for Mr. Russell will be 2:00 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. A continued celebration of life will be held at the Carthage Lake Club in Carman, IL, following the service.

Elsie Ruth Pforts, age 91, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday morning, May 16, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  The daughter of Wallace and Hattie Hinson Walker, she was born on January 12, 1926 in rural Sperry.  On May 25, 1944, she married R. Orville Pforts in Sperry.  He preceded her in death on July 17, 1983.

 

Elsie was a farm homemaker and had worked at Midwest Biscuit Co. in Burlington before her marriage and later worked at Huron School as a cook and the later as a clerk for Fry’s variety Store and also at Remember Inn.

 

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis, the PW Association, the Morning Circle, and the Young at Heart.  She was also a member of the Sunshine Club.  Elsie enjoyed playing cards, jig saw puzzles, needlepoint, and most of all her family.

 

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara & David Miller of Burlington and Joanne & Jerry Kilbride of Morning Sun; two sons, David & Shirley Pforts of Birmingham and Thomas & Denise Pforts of Wapello; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Orville.

 

The funeral ceremony for Elsie Pforts will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 19, 2017, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis.  Pastor Melisa Bracht-Wagner will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery and a luncheon to follow at the fellowship hall of the church.

 

Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Mr. Steven Sergey Hoth, 76, of Burlington died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Great River Medical Center.

Born January 30, 1941 in Oelwein, Iowa, he was the son of Donald L. and Ina (Barr) Hoth.  On July 29, 1967 he married JoEllen Maly in Cedar Rapids.

Steve was a 1958 graduate of Lamont, Iowa High School, 1962 graduate of Grinnell College and a 1966 graduate of University of Iowa Law School.

Prior to his law career, which spanned more than 50 years, Steve was a teacher in Africa for a year.  Besides his private practice, Steve clerked for the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, served as Des Moines County Attorney, was past president of the Burlington School Board, started the Burlington Junction Railroad and continued to manage the family farms.

Steve was a member of First Congregational Church and served as the moderator for the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches.  He also was a 50 year member of the American Bar Association, member and past president of Crystal Lake Club, active member of Burlington Rotary Club, and a 50 year member of the American Numismatic Association.

Steve enjoyed vacations with his family in Florida and collecting stamps and coins.  He was an avid outdoorsman, especially fishing and duck hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. JoEllen Hoth of Burlington; two sons, Andrew (Katherine) Hoth of Burlington and Peter (Karin) Hoth of Iowa City; six grandchildren, David, Noah, Gretta, Caleb, Tyler, and Aubrey; and one sister, Sandra Hoth of Port Wing, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Monday, May 22nd, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m.

The funeral service for Steve will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23rd, at First Congregational Church with the Rev. James Francisco officiating.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First Congregational Church.

 

 

 

Mr. Raymond F. Fraise, 74, of Burlington died at 1:05 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2017, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 23, 1943 in Fort Madison, he was the son of Anthony and Claire (Hawkins) Fraise.  On June 18, 1967 he married Lila Schmitz at First Assembly of God Church in Burlington.  She preceded him in death on February 11, 2016.

Mr. Fraise delivered the Hawk Eye and the Des Moines Register and also worked at Ewinger Supply.  He loved horses and working with cattle.  He was a foster parent for many years.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Myers of Stronghurst, Illinois and Annette Jones of Ottumwa; and three brothers, Ralph Fraise and Alfred Fraise both of Farmington and Glen Fraise of Argyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.

Theresa Beach Taylor, 88, of West Burlington, died at 2:52 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center.

 

Born March 16, 1929, in Mount Pleasant, IA, she was the daughter of John and Margaret Liesen Beach. On August 17, 1955, she married Ware Hall Taylor in Tucson, AZ. He died April 26, 2017

 

Theresa worked for one year at Sheaffer Pen and for nine years at the former Henry County Savings Bank as a head bookkeeper.  Theresa worked side by side with her husband farming for several years.

 

She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1947.

 

She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Business Women’s Club, the Alter & Rosary Society, the Daughters of Isabella of West Point, and St. Theresa’s Society of SS John & Paul Church in Burlington.  She and her husband enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, and traveling.  She enjoyed quilting and made money for charity.  She was an avid hand quilter and received many awards for her work for over thirty years.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Taylor of Las Vegas, NV, and Barbara McKasson of West Burlington; two granddaughters, Jessica and Melissa of Burlington; and three great-grandchildren, Lathan, Derrick Jr., and Laylah.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one in infancy, and two sisters.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, May 22, 2017, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Taylor will be 11:00 AM Monday, May 22, 2017, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father Bill Roush as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at SS Mary & Patrick Catholic Church Parrish Center following the service. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.

 

Memorials have been established for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital & the St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry.

Martha Virginia Hester, 78, of Branson, formerly of Burlington, died at 1:19 AM Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at her home in Branson.

 

Born June 3, 1938, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Maurice and Daisey Heintze Herr. On June 29, 1958, she married Gerald Boyd Hester in Burlington. He died November 1, 2013.

 

Martha worked for Clarks Discount Store, Cooks Discount Store, Miller Photo Lab, K-Mart, Zales Jewelry, Spencer Gifts and Sears.  She retired in 2014.

 

She loved to travel, watching HGTV, travel and house shows and reality television.  Martha and her husband and children raised AKC German Shepherds for over 30 years.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Gina (Patrick) Gorrell of Springfield, MO; one son, Roger Boyd (Ann) Hester of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Kathleen (Jamie) Gorrell, and Lance Edward Hester.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Margery “Marge” Richart, 87, of Wever, died at 12:20 PM Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House.

 

Born February 5, 1930, in Waterloo, she was the daughter of Edwin “Bud” and Margaret “Maggie” Kaufman Willwerth. On April 28, 1950, she married James Richart in La Porte City, IA.

 

Marge was employed at the State Bank of Vinton in Vinton, IA, YWCA in Washington, Central Community High School in DeWitt, Hirsch, Wright, Link & Adams Law Office, Caterpillar, Medusa Aggregates, & Pryor, Riley, Jones & Aspelmeier Law Office all in Burlington, and Mason & Hanger, in Middletown. She retired on April 7, 1994.

 

She graduated from Lincoln High School, Vinton, Iowa in 1948.

 

She was a member of Harmony Bible Church.  She was a 54 year member of the TTT Society, Charter Member & Past President of Chapter EX, TTT in DeWitt, Past President, Vice President and member of Chapter BD, TTT in Burlington. Marge enjoyed camping, boating, horseback riding, gardening, Iowa Hawkeye & Burlington High School wrestling, and all the many & varied activities of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 

Survivors include her husband; one son, Mike (Debbie) Richart of New London; three daughters, Denice (Jack) Plakke of Holland, MI, Mary (Darren) Delzell of Burlington, and Karen Burch of Littleton, CO; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marlys Rice; one sister-in-law, Catherine Willwerth; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Richart; and several cousins, and many nieces & nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Edwin Melvin, Donald, and Darrel Willwerth, one sister, Darlene Driscol and on daughter-in-law, Debbie Richart.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

LeRoy Dale Eland, 87, of Burlington, died at 9:02 AM Friday, May 19, 2017, at his home.

 

Born May 5, 1930, in Keokuk, IA, he was the son of Oscar and Blanche McCready Eland. On May 6, 1951, he married Judith Lucille Dewey in Monmouth. She died January 29, 2015.

 

LeRoy was a Staff Sergeant for the United States Army and retired after 20 years. He then worked for the U.S. Army Ammunition Plant, and First Miss. Fertilizer Plant.

 

He was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

He enjoyed motorcycles, target shooting, and playing cards.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Mike) Whitaker of Burlington, and Shelley (Robert) Isaacson of Morrison, IL; four grandchildren, Rick Whitaker of Riverside, IA, Kim (Jesse) Whitaker-Logan of West Burlington, Josh Isaacson of Las Vegas, NV, and Shayla (Brad) Grobe of Coleta, IL; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild on the way; and three nephews and one niece.

 

Beside his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jerome Eland, and one sister, Delores Wallace.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Alysabeth Louise Ferneau, 24, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, May 20, 2017, near Danville, Iowa.

 

Alysa was born February 4, 1993, in Des Moines, Iowa. She loved her work as a caregiver at Hope Haven in Burlington, a facility devoted to assisting developmentally-disabled adults and also her work at Young House Family Services in Burlington. Alysa had devoted her life to helping others. She was a member of Harmony Bible Church.

 

She enjoyed many collections including comic books, wolves, elephants, ornamental keys and stuffed animals. She especially enjoyed her books and writing.

 

Alysa is survived by her parents, Jim and Shelley Ferneau, of Burlington; eleven brothers and sisters, Audreyanna (Alex) Marlett, Daniel, John Paul, Abigail, Nathaniel, Chloe, Naomi and Jordan Ferneau, all of Burlington, and Jessica, Dorothy and Julius Bear of Tama/Marshalltown area; two nieces, Charlotte and Izabelle Marlett; her birthfather, Clyde Youngbear; grandparents, Dennis and Gloria Carkhuff of Marshalltown, Bob and Arlene Johnson of Marshalltown and John and Patricia Ferneau of New Providence.

 

She was preceded in death by three infant siblings: Kiersten, Tiffany and Sarah.

 

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until noon Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home with the family to receive friends.

Robert “Bob” Anderson, 80, of Burlington, died at 4:35 PM Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born April 1, 1937, in Columbus Junction, he was the son of Francis Peter and Mary Elizabeth Collett Anderson. On August 8, 1962, he married Barabra Donna Hallberg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington.

 

Bob worked as a design engineer I at J I Case Company for 28 years, retiring in 1997.  Prior to working at J I Case, Bob worked for John Deere and IAAP.

 

He was a 1955 graduate of Burlington High School and later attended Southeastern Community College in the evenings to further his education. He received a CATIA and Pro-E (Computer Aided Design) to become a Design Engineer.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis, from December 2, 1959 until March 1, 1962.

 

He was a member of Midwest Vintage Racing Club and Harley-Davidson Rider Club. Bob received many awards over the years, including 29 Design Patents in his name as a designer for J.I. Case, 1972 Midget Racing Ultra Rookie of the Year and 1994 Knoxville Masters Classic Rookie of the Year. He enjoyed racing, playing his guitar, riding motorcycles, boxing in the Army, and all sports, especially football, baseball, and basketball.

 

Survivors include his wife, Barabra; two sons, Robert Henry (Joni) Anderson of Burlington, David Glen (Heidi) Anderson of Burlington; one daugher-in-law, Lisa Anderson of Carthage, IL, nine grandchildren, Codey, Bailey, Carter, Brett, Morgan, and Brad Anderson, Corbyn, Ciarra, and Coulton Wascher; one great-grandchild Taran Anderson; one brother, Roger (Sandy) Anderson of Indianapolis, ID, six sisters-in-law, Linda Anderson, Judy Anderson, Sherry Anderson, Nancy McKee, Karen Anderson, Sue (George) Moehle of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Donald, five brothers, Jim, Dean, Jerry, Donald, and David Anderson, and one sister Lois I. Anderson.

 

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home, with the family to receive friends.

E. Marie Murray, age 90, of rural Columbus Junction, died Friday evening, May 19, 2017, at the Wapello Specialty Care.  The daughter of G. Glen and Ellen Dunphy Beik, she was born on January 1, 1927 in Louisa County, Iowa.  Marie married Robert ‘Bob’ Murray on May 29, 1946 at the home of her parents in Letts.  He preceded her in death on July 2, 2007.

 

Marie graduated from Grandview High School in 1944 and received her teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.  She taught in early elementary education beginning at Oakville and then Grandview and later at Louisa-Muscatine in the Letts Elementary.  She also taught at the Louisa County Home.

 

She was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church, Grandview Federated Club, Louisa County Historical Society, Louisa County Retired Teachers Association, and Lucky 13 Card Club.  Marie primarily enjoyed her family, the grandkids and great grandkids.  She enjoyed crafts, painting, and reading and together with Bob enjoyed camping and

wintering in Lakeland, Florida for over 25 years.

 

Her family includes two daughters, Jeanette Brockert & Keith Brockway of Burlington and Jeri & Richard Drawbaugh of Muscatine; a son, John & Teresa Murray of rural Columbus Junction; ten grandchildren, Jason, Jill, Jeremy, Jed, Adam, Alex, Bob, Alicia, Brietta, and Jenna; 12 great grandchildren, Kyndal, Isaiah, Keetyn, Eli, Kayliah, Kaelyn, Micah, Nash, Vance, AJ, Josiah, and Jasmine; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Kemp of Wapello; a brother-in-law, Lawrence ‘Babe’ Rowe of Grandview; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; two sisters, Mildred Bieri and Betty Jo Rowe; and a brother, Harlan Beik.

 

The funeral ceremony for Marie Murray will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Grandview Community Bible Church with Pastor Jason Humiston and Rev. Darryl Erickson officiating.  Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery followed by a lunch gathering at the Fellowship Hall of the church.

Singleton, age 93, of Wapello, died Friday morning, May 19, 2017, at the Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction.  The daughter of Melville and Irma Kiner Milligan, she was born on November 14, 1923 in rural Wapello.  She married Gale Singleton on January 11, 1941 in Muscatine.  He preceded her in death on April 2, 2004.

 

She was a homemaker and enjoyed every aspect of that.  She had attended the Church Of The Nazarene in Wapello.

 

Her family includes a daughter, Sharon & Don Wood of Wapello; a son, Dave & Shelly Singleton of Wapello; five grandchildren; Jeff Underwood, Amanda Tipps, Shad Singleton, Sara Maddux, and Seth Singleton; eight great grandchildren, Shae Singleton, Tate Singleton, Wyatt Singleton, Landry Singleton, Alexis Harris, Dawson Tipps, Emily Tipps, and Teagan Maddux; and a sister, Nadine Paris of Wapello.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gale; a brother, Elmer Milligan; and a sister, Eva Williams.

Miss Theresa Frances Beckman, 91, of Sperry died at12:55 a.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis.

Born November 15, 1925 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank Joseph and Agnes Mary (Fitzpatrick) Beckman.

Miss Beckman was a farmer and a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the area.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville and Willing Workers Club.

Survivors include a nephew-in-law, David Getchell; a great nephew, Damian Getchell; and a great-great niece, Blair Getchell all of Sperry.

Miss Beckman was preceded in death by her parents, sister, infant brother, and niece Rose Getchell.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dodgeville.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

 

Sarann Alice McMillan-Ried, 65, of West Burlington, died at 5:00 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

 

Born November 17, 1951, in Orlando, FL, she was the daughter of Robert and Edna Lewis McMillian. On December 24, 2004, she married Karl Louis Ried in Durham, New Hampshire. He died April 30, 2009.

 

Sarann worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in the HR Department.

 

She attended the University of New Hampshire.

 

She enjoyed quilting, cooking, all animals and was an animal rights activist.

 

Survivors include her mother, Edna; two sister, Denise Gose of Tucson, AZ, sister, Mary Kramer-Stubbs of Phenoix, AZ, one step-son, Travis Karl of West Burlington;  step-daughter, Karol Adamson of Kingston, Lisa Ried of West Burlington, Kristin Evans of Mediapolis, and Dawn Marie Olomon of Fayetteville, NC.

 

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her father and step-father Luke Victor Kramer.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Yvonne Annette Shelton-Sloan, 65, of Burlington, completed her earthly travels and departed from us on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

 

Born June 7, 1951, in Rock Island, Illinois, she was the daughter of James Albert and Beulah Elizabeth Robinson Shelton. On May 27, 1989, she married Owen Thomas Sloan in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

 

Yvonne worked for John Deere Corp. before moving to Burlington.  In Burlington she worked at, Long John Silvers, Target, and the Burlington Basket Factory.  She spent 25 plus years at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as a production worker and a Quality-Lean Team Leader.  She received several certificates for safety, Quality, and Lean Production while there.

She was of the Baptist faith and was a past member of the Second Baptist Church, Ft. Madison.  Yvonne loved being with family and friends.  She was a member of St. Elmo #3 Chapter of the Eastern Star.  She loved watching Price is Right, Jeopardy, cooking shows, and reality shows on TV.  But she really loved time with her dog, Bailey, who she spoiled rotten, and always carried a plastic bag in her purse when going out to eat, this bag was for leftovers for Bailey. Yvonne loved that Mississippi River catfish and that bony Buffalo, plus those (pig parts she would have to cook on the front or back porch to keep Owen happy). She wanted to have her thousand food recipes put on CD’s but that is left to Owen to do so he can get rid of all those bags full of recipes.

 

Survivors include her husband; one son, Damien (Tonia) Washington of Nashville, TN; one daughter, Tiffany Shelton-Jackson of Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister, Betty Lou Shelton of Marietta, GA; two brothers, James “Jimmy” Shelton, and David Shelton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Argolda (Goldie) Shelton, Shirley Shelton, and Gloria Shelton, three brothers, Leroy Shelton, Ronnie Shelton, and Floyd Shelton, and two uncles, David Robinson & Rev. Donald Robinson Sr.

Robert “Rob”  Rahija, 22, of Burlington, died at 2:11 PM Saturday, May 20, 2017, at his home.

 

Born June 30, 1994, in Iowa City, he was the son of Terry and Ruth Ann Bowman Rahija.

 

Rob worked in the kitchen at Hy-Vee.

 

He graduated Burlington High School in 2013, graduated the Job Corp in 2015 and attended Southeastern Community College.

 

He enjoyed playing football in High School, hanging out with his friends, and being the 2012 Homecoming King at BHS. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, and most of all he loved becoming a father to his son, Noah.

 

Survivors include his significant other, Alicia Waterman of Burlington; one son, Noah Rahija of Burlington;  his father;  four sisters, Cherish Rahija of Cedar Rapids, Holly (Joe Monahan) Rahija of Walker, Emily (Brendon Pierce) Rahija of South Sioux City, and Toni (Nate) Klein of Swisher; one niece Peighton Rahija; four nephews, Treighton Rahija, Clayton Hook, Jayden Hook, and Gary Klein; two uncles; three aunts, and his girlfriend’s Nana, Mary Waterman.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother, maternal & paternal grandparents, two uncles, Bobby & Mike Rahija, and one aunt, Linda Carter.

Jacqueline L. Sievers, age 77 of West Burlington died Saturday May 20,2017 at the New London Specialty Care Center.  The daughter of Earl and Vera (Price) Tesdahl she was born April 11, 1940 at Ames, Iowa.  On April 24, 1964 she married Loren Sievers at Nashua, Iowa; he died August 1, 2011.  She was a graduate of the Winfield High School, class of 1958 and attended Burlington Business College.  She worked at National Bank of Burlington from 1958-68.  She then worked at Autumn Heights as executive office administrator from 1970-2006.  She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis.

Survivors include; two daughters, Lori Anderson of Burlington and Janelle Sievers of West Burlington; three grandchildren; one sister Patsy Bozarth of Winfield.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

A graveside service will be Tuesday May 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Rev. Bruce Smith officiating.  A memorial has been established for Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Betty E. Hightower, 82, of Burlington, died at 4:25 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born March 27, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Samuel Raymond and Frances Pearl Sturhahn Willson. On January 29, 1956, she married Donald Wayne Hightower in Burlington.  He died May 26, 2001.

 

Betty was a bookkeeper for King’s Food Host, KDWD Radio Station and American Cancer Sociey.  She also was a receptionist for the Burlington Board of Realtors.

 

She was a 1953 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and doing alterations for her friends.  She also enjoyed flower gardening.

 

Survivors include one son, Kenny Hightower of Burlington; two daughters, Sandy Herold of Peoria, IL, and Carol (Mike) Miskovic of Burlington; six grandchildren, Valerie (Cory) Olson, Leland (Christine) Deehring, Lana (Ryne) Crowell, David Hightower, Melissa (Jace) Skalinski, and Chris (Scott) Collins; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter-in-law; Cheryl Hightower, one son-in-law, Pat Herold; four sisters, Martha Hartman, Dorothy Rickeberg, Lynda Murray, Maryann Cochran and one brother, Raymond Willson.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Hightower will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Will Ryan officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for the funeral dinner program.

Allison “Gene” McMillan, 91, of Middletown, died at 7:30 AM, Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born January 9, 1926, in Industry Township, IL, he was the son of Lawrence and Beulah Evelyn Engles McMillan. On July 8, 1944, he married Marjorie Skiles in Macomb, Illinois. She died December 1968. On May 2, 1970, he married Betty Louise Teel Snider in West Burlington. She died August 5, 2006.

 

Gene worked as a painter for 24 years, retiring in 1984.

 

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He also was a proud member of Painters Union Local #676.

 

Survivors include his step-daughter, Carolyn (Wayne) Ragland of Del Valle, TX; one granddaughter, Amy Hohenberg; two great-granddaughters, Krystal Hohenberg, and Starna Hohenberg; eight nephews; and four nieces.

 

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Berthol McMillan, Dean McMillan, Robert McMillan, and James McMillan and one sister, Nedra Ellis

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. McMillan will be 10:00 AM Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain David Plooster officiating.  Burial will be in Industry Cemetery.

Vida Janice Fickel, 95, of Burlington, died at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born November 24, 1921, in Fort Madison, IA, she was the daughter of Gustav Joseph and Esther Martha Hasenclever Miller. On March 1, 1941, she married Ervin Leo Fickel at the Union Presbyterian Church in Ft. Madison. He died January 21, 2007.

Vida worked at Sheaffer Pen before she was married. She was a typist for the engineers while her husband was in the service. She then worked in banks in Iowa City and Monroe, IA and worked for many years in jewelry stores in Atlantic and Ames, IA.

After her marriage she followed her husband in the Army to Washington, California, and Texas during WW II. Vi was a past member of the Lioness Club while living in Ames. She attended Parkside First Baptist Church in Burlington. She enjoyed music, playing the flute in concert and marching band, playing bridge, golf, bingo, and attending Bible studies.

Survivors include one sister, Kathryn (Richard) Bell of Burlington; one nephew, Steven (Jeanne) Bell of Burlington; one great-nephew, Eric Bell of Wever one great-niece, Rachel (Jeff) Bott of Windsor, CO; one great-great-nephew, Harlan Bell of Wever and several cousins.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Friday, May 26, 2017 at Parkside First Baptist Church.

The funeral service for Mrs. Fickel will be 10:00 AM Friday, May 26, 2017, at Parkside First Baptist Church with Reverend Marshall Jackman officiating. Ruth Allen, 90, of Burlington, died at 3:40 PM Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center.

Born February 4, 1927, in Missouri, she was the daughter of Albert and Goldie Barton Eddy.

Ruth worked at Sheaffer Pen, IAAP, and retired from Champion Spark plug.

She had a great passion for all animals and enjoyed playing bingo, watching softball, gardening, and traveling.

Survivors include two sons, Keith Allen of Burlington, and Randy Allen of West Burlington; two daughters, Debbie Leisenring, and Terri (Jim) Butler both of Fort Madison; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Mark, and two sisters, Jean and Wendy.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Mr. Ralph Gilbert Countryman, 83, of Stronghurst, IL passed away at 7:25 PM Saturday, May 27, 2017 at his home.

He was born on January 22, 1934 in Wilmington, IL the son of Paul and Margret Calhoun Countryman. On November 17, 1954 he married Mary Lue Williams in Joliet, IL. They later divorced.

Ralph served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was later honorably discharged. He was very proud of the time he served in Korea. In 1970 he married Lucy Bean in Joliet, IL. They later divorced.

Ralph first worked for Uniroyal in Elwood, IL. He then went to work for Haliburton Co. in Houston, TX for over 20 years, retiring in 1998. Upon retirement he moved to LaHarpe, IL. He was an avid White Sox fan, enjoyed golfing as well as playing Dice and Dominos. He had a soft spot in his heart for children.

Survivors include six children, Ralph (Fran) Countryman of Wilmington, IL, Wade (Pam) Countryman of Oquawka, IL, Debbie Peterson of Stronghurst, Roger (Jackie) Countryman of Stronghurst, Candy Countryman of Houston, TX, and Shelly Fye of Texas, 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, five brothers, Paul, Chuck, Floyd, Walter, Hank and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Randy Countryman, five brothers, Clarence, Robert, Tom, Calven, Ed, one sister, Arlene Greer, two daughter-in-laws, Luann and Janice, and one son-in-law, Jeff Peterson.

A funeral service, with military rites, will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, IL with Aaron Baker Officiating. Deloris Lou Titus , 85, of West Burlington, went to be with her heavenly Father at 8:05 pm Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born August 27, 1931, in Davenport, IA, she was the daughter of Lloyd Alfred and Bernice Opal Dipple. On April 29, 1951, she married Ronald Joseph in St. Mark’s Church in Davenport IA. He later passed on March 15, 2006

She was a homemaker for a large part of her life, and also worked floral design for Rainbow Flower Shop in Davenport.

Deloris was a member of Namekagon Congregational United Church of Christ in Earl, WI. After her husbands passing, she moved to West Burlington and attended the West Burlington Christian Church. She also belonged to the Homemakers Club, Lionesses Club and was the secretary for several years for the Golden Oldies. She loved to read, watch movies and Jeopardy, do crosswords puzzles, plant flowers and play games and cards. When it was the holiday season, she loved to shop and decorate for the holdiay seasons. Other times of the year, she enjoyed camping and fishing. Most of all, what made Deloris the happiest was spending time with her friends and family, to show that she loved them very much.

Survivors include two daughters, Denise (Gary) O’Connor of Burlington, Ardythe (Jon) Jorgensen of Bonita Springs, FL; four grandchildren, Erin, James (Christopher), Kevin (Mandy) and Caitlin (Kellen); four great-grandchildren, Kylie, Olivia, Stella, and Charlie; three brothers, Dale (Rosemary), Ronald (Lucille), and Gary (Dawn) Dipple; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, and husband, she is preceded in death by her brother Lloyd and three great-grandchildren, Cody, Averi and Isabella.

A memorial has been established for Great River Home Health and Hospice.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Bonnie “Jeanne” Elizabeth Callaway, 85, formerly a Burlington resident died at 4:50 AM Saturday, May 6, 2017, in Belton, Missouri.

Born July 10, 1931, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William and Bernice Simms Daugherty. On February 12, 1949, she married Robert Roland Callaway in Burlington Iowa. He died on June 17, 2016.

Jeanne was a longtime member of the EC Blackmar Chapter #306 of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron, and a longtime member of Daughters of the Nile, serving as Queen. She enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions and collecting antique glassware. She liked to go fishing with her husband, Bob and eat at new restaurants all over the United States. She worked as a Sales Associate in Burlington for many years and as a construction receptionist in several different states while traveling with Bob. After retiring, she loved working as a volunteer for Great River Medical Center while living in Burlington. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Burlington and had many wonderful friends there. Her favorite song was “I will always love you”.

And Mom, “We will always love you”.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki (Michael) Swore of Cedar Rapids Iowa and Pam (Clint) Delwisch of Loveland, Colorado; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; three step great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Joanne (Steve) Boyle of Burlington Iowa; and one brother, Jack (Edith) Daugherty of Argyle, Iowa.

Jane Mohr, 83, of Terre Haute, IL, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, IL.
She was born on September 14, 1933 in Macomb, IL the daughter of Lowell and Etta Gustafson Butler. On April 10, 1955, she married Lowell Mohr in LaHarpe, IL.
Jane attended country grade schools and was a 1951 graduate of the former Terre Haute High School, graduating as valedictorian. She then attended Western Illinois State Teachers College. Jane was a former president of the Henderson County Republican Women. She was a member of Terre Haute United Methodist Church, serving as secretary of the church board for many years and also a member of the Durham G.T. Club.
Survivors include her husband, Lowell, one daughter, Annetta (Rowen) Ziegler of LaHarpe, one son, James (Joan) Mohr of LaHarpe, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Gary (Sherry) Butler of LaHarpe.
Mrs. Mohr was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Marion and David Butler.

Joani Kelso Sturms, 53, of Keokuk, formerly of Burlington, died at 7:27 PM Sunday, May 28, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center.

Born May 2, 1964, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Wayne A. & Lorraine Huppenbauer Kelso. On October 11, 1986, she married Kyle James Sturms at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington.

Joani was a sales representative at Mediacom for almost thirty years.

She was a member of SS John & Paul Catholic Church. She was a volunteer at the Keokuk Humane Society, Relay for Life, a member of the American Cancer Society, and the American Diabetes Association. She enjoyed playing with her dogs, dancing, reading, camping, traveling, being with her friends & sisters, and spending time with her grandson. Joani never knew a stranger.

She was an organ donor and through her passing was able to make someone else’s life better. It is comforting to know her vision lives on.

Survivors include her husband, Kyle; two daughters, Kayla (Derek) Gail of Keokuk and Jenna Sturms of Fort Madison; one grandson, Drayton Joseph Linn Gail; one brother, John E. Travis Owen Wiley, age 40, of rural Wapello, died Friday, May 26, 2017, at his home. The son of Dennis, Sr. and Debra Renshaw Wiley, he was born on October 14, 1976 in Burlington. Travis graduated from Wapello High School in 1995. He has served in the US Army and Army Reserves.

He enjoyed installing car radios, going to garage sales, watching movies, and fishing. He was a fan of the Oakland Raiders and the Cincinnati Reds.

His family includes a son, Bryce Riherd, serving in the US Marines and stationed in California; his mother, Debra Graham of rural Wapello; his father, Dennis Wiley, Sr. of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Dennis ‘DJ’ Wiley, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; a niece, Sophia Wiley; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 2, 2017, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. Pastor Dan Doolin will officiate.

Mrs. Shirley Ann Augsburger, 81, of Burlington died at 10:46 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Burlington Care Center.
Born November 29, 1935 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Lyman and Mabel (Stewart) Dirth. On November 30, 1957 she married Albert “Al” Nicholas Augsburger in Burlington. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2000.
Mrs. Augsburger worked in production at I.A.A.P. for 31 years, retiring in 1994. She enjoyed playing Bingo in Illinois, crocheting and fishing.
Survivors include one son, Roger Scott Augsburger of Florida; one daughter, Amber Lynn Green of Burlington; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Dirth and Larry Dirth both of Burlington; and two sisters, Barbara Stone of Lebanon, Missouri and Sharon Hayes of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Melody Sue Augsburger, two brothers and one sister.

Beverly Ann Dickenson, 79, of Burlington, died at 9:59 PM Sunday, June 4, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center.

Born March 30, 1938, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Emery William and Iris Leon Carson Bumsted. On July 6, 1956, she married Douglas Cecil Dickenson in Eldora, IA. He died December 13, 2008.

Beverly was retired from General Electric.

She was a 1955 graduate of Whitten High School.

She enjoyed bowling, fishing, boating, watching game shows, and traveling.

Survivors include her companion, William C. Carpenter of Burlington; one daughter, DeeAnn Forquer of Burlington; four sons, Terry R. Dickenson of Blanchard, OK, Daniel W. (Brenda) Dickenson of Keokuk, David (Sherrie) Dickenson of Burlington, Joel (LeAnn) Dickenson of Blanchard, OK; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Connie) Bumsted; one sister, Ada Marie (Keith) Brown of Marshalltown; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ruth Marie DeGrange, 89, of Burlington died at 5:12 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2017, at her home.
Born April 27, 1928 in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Guy and Eva (Larson) Overholser. On June 20, 1948 she married George DeGrange in Lockridge. He preceded her in death on November 21, 2003.
Mrs. DeGrange attended Fairfield schools and was a 1946 graduate of Lockridge High School. She was a licensed practical nurse and worked with home health care, General Electric, Sylvania, IRC, National Research Bureau and at GNC in the Westland Mall.
Mrs. DeGrange was a member of First Presbyterian Church. A large part of her life was her community involvement and serving people. She volunteered at Salvation Army, Community Thanksgiving Dinner, the Welcome Center, Meals on Wheels, and the Burlington Battered Women’s Shelter. She enjoyed garage sales, shopping and crossword puzzles and loved animals – especially her dogs.
Survivors include one son, Steve (Sinmei) DeGrange of Saratoga, California; two daughters, Shari (Steve) Smith of West Burlington and Sheila (Scott) Goff of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Alexandra (Joey) Rivera, Timothy DeGrange, Kristy Hoambrecker, Nicole (Chris) Callaway, Joshua Smith, Ben Dochterman and Tara Goff; eight great grandchildren, Brooklyn Dochterman, Blaze Dochterman, Kaelyn Hoambrecker, Cade Hoambrecker, Conner Hoambrecker, Cole Callaway, Cohen Callaway, and Cameron Smith; one sister, Mary Jo (Ray) Bell of Oregon; one sister-in-law, Margaret Rehwoldt of Mount Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters Evelyn Brobston, Buena Batts, and Marty Hoover; and three brothers-in-law, Jack, Richard and Tom.
The funeral service for Mrs. DeGrange will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10th, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Deb Kinney officiating. Private family interment will be in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Donnellson. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.

Frances Ceclia Smyth, 101, of New London, died at 7:15 PM Monday, June 5, 2017, at the New London Nursing and Rehab.

Born November 1, 1915, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John B. and Flora Knox Maddox. On October 5, 1938, she married Horace F. Smyth in Burlington. He died June 27, 1989.

She was a homemaker.

She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School.

She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church. She enjoyed listening to lively jazz style music and dancing. At the age of 93, she went for her first motorcycle ride and loved it. She enjoyed reading National Geographic and Zane Grey western books, watching Western movies and M.A.S.H. She especially enjoyed her trip to Israel to see the Holy Land, and loved to spend her winters down in Texas with her husband.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Smyth of Burlington, & Stephen (Linda) Smyth of New London; one daughter, Joyce Rauscher of Lockridge; one daughter-in-law, Agnes Smyth of Niles, IL; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, John & Paul Smyth, two brothers, Allen & John, two sisters, Mary & Ada, and one granddaughter, Susan Starr.

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM with the family to receive friends from noon until 1:00 PM Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Linda H. Balbort, 78, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at her home, due to complications of COPD.

Born March 29, 1939, in Erie, NY, she was the daughter of Herbert C. and Viola A. Heinen Jacobson. She married Bill Balbort of Burlington, on September 15, 1962.

Linda and Bill owned and operated Balbort’s Confectionary on North Hill for over 35 years. She always enjoyed running into “people from the neighborhood” when she was out and about.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1956.

Linda was a fighter from the day she was born and was always wanting to “Live” life. She was full of fire and love. The freedom and independence that she had, living on their family’s farm, meant so much to her. What she loved most in life was, “da boyz,” her family, her old friends, and her home. She enjoyed singing along with the Gaithers on Saturday nights, cutting grass on the riding lawn mower, fishing, mushrooming, skiing, sketching/drawing, the wildlife which surrounded her, and the simple beauty that Mother nature surrounded her with.

Survivors include three daughters, Kris (Ed) Engel of O Fallon, MO, Tracy Balbort of West Burlington, & Becky (Chris) Vanderhaar of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren; one sister, Annie Beckerman of Brighton, CO; and four nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Bill, she is preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Herbie.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Mr. Daniel “Dan” K. O’Brien, 72, of Burlington died at 2:34 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2017, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born May 11, 1945 in Oneonta, New York, he was the son of Kenneth and Elizabeth (Duffy) O’Brien and was raised by his father and step mother, June O’Brien. On July 16, 1988 he married Bonnie Hemm in Sacramento, California.
Mr. O’Brien was an Air Force Vietnam veteran. He was the parts manager of Curry Transportation, worked for Centre State International and was fleet manager for Pepsi in California.
Mr. O’Brien was of the Christian faith. He was a father that chose to be a father and went out of his way to bond with Bonnie’s children. He was loved as the best man in the world. Mr. O’Brien was a hard worker and loved taking “Gemma”, his toy Boston terrier on walks.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie O’Brien of Burlington; one son, Stacy (Angie) Morrison of Lomax, Illinois; one daughter, Amy Morrison of Burlington; ten grandchildren, Daniel R. Morrison, Kenneth Morrison, Shian Morrison, Sierra Russell, Clayton Morrison, Clinton Morrison, Coda Morrison, Joshua Russell, Ashley Wiseman and Hailee Wiseman; one great grandchild, Annabelle Joy Morrison; and his close friend, Walt Warth of Morning Sun.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother June and one son, Kenneth Morrison.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 11th, at Lunning Chapel.
Military Rites will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the services.

Donna Jean Burt, 78, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 5:40 PM Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at The LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

Born on January 17, 1939 in Kirkwood, IL, Donna was the daughter of Ward and Alice Whitmore Melvin. On August 5, 1959 she married Ronald Burt. They later divorced.

Donna was a 1957 graduate of the LaHarpe High School. She enjoyed crocheting and above all, she loved being a mother and grandmother.

Survivors include one daughter: Rena Quigle of LaHarpe; one son: Roger Burt of LaHarpe and six grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter: Rhonda Quigle; one son: Rodney Burt; one granddaughter; three brothers: William, Ward and Ralph Melvin and one sister: Nancy Johnson.

A funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 9, 2017 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Sister Delores A. Pint, 84, of West Burlington, died at 7:36 AM Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Genesis Medical Center West, Davenport, IA.

Born February 10, 1933, in Osage, IA, she was the daughter of Fredrick and Margaret Therese Bodensteiner Pint.

She was a 1951 graduate of Osage High School. She received her BA from Clarke College in Dubuque and her MA from the University of Northern Iowa.

Sister professed final vows on June 9, 1954, as a sister of the Presentation religious community in Dubuque and she is a member of the Sisters for Christian Community. Sister Delores was a teacher for 18 years in the Catholic schools in Dubuque. She was then a counselor for the Burlington public schools for 28 years.

She was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles, and Iowa Hawkeye football. She volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.

Survivors include two brothers, Norbert Pint of Forrest City, IA and James (Betty) Pint of Akron, OH; one sister, Rosemary (William) Paschke of Milwaukee, WI; many nieces and nephews including Elizabeth (Stephen Ramirez) Knaack of Davenport, IA, and Jennifer (Scott) Carrick of Glendale, AZ; many great nieces and nephews including Alex Knaack and Annabelle Knaack.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Dorothy, in infancy, Betty, and Patricia.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Friday, June 9, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

John “Bo” Wasson Jr., 68, of Burlington, died at 6:32 PM Monday, June 5, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Chemo Unit at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City and the Great River Hospice House for the care and kindness they showed Bo.

Born December 26, 1948, in Burlington, he was the son of John Robert Sr. and Betsy Ross Turnbough Wasson.

Bo graduated form West Burlington Arnold High School.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from January 17, 1969 until January 16, 1975.

Bo worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for over 25 years.

He enjoyed building model railroads, cake decorating, various collections, black powder rifles, and shooting guns. He also enjoyed participating in the black powder rendezvous re-enactments and dressing up as Santa for local nursing homes and other organizations during the Christmas season.

Survivors include his two sisters, Noreen Wasson of Burlington, Lucretia “Lou” (Donald) Broeg of West Burlington; two brothers, Stephen (Sandy) Wasson of Burlington, Richard (Donna) Wasson of Frankfort, KY; three nieces, Amanda, Holly, Kaitlynn; four nephews, Andrew, Joshua, Jon, Brandon; three great-nephews, Tyler, JJ, Sam; five cousins, Linda (Ed) Bogle, Richard Jr. (Barb) Turnbough, Bob (Theresa) Turnbough, Laura (Stan) Gillespie, all of New Mexico and Di Evans of Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Nancy Wasson, and nephew, Jimmy Wasson.

Lindsay Calhoun, 81, of Boston, Massachusetts, died at 4:50 PM Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Rogerson House in Jamaica Plain.

Born February 22, 1936, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William James and Betty Edgar Cooper. Her birth on Washington’s birthday and her sister’s birth on Jefferson’s birthday led to a lifelong friendly debate as to which was the greater president.

On June 22, 1958, she married Clifford Julian Calhoun in Christ Episcopal Church in Burlington.

Lindsay graduated from Burlington High School in 1954, from Carleton College in 1958 and from the University of Colorado in 1974 with a Master’s degree. She worked as a librarian for the Boulder Public Schools in Boulder Colorado. She kept a papier-mâché pig in the library of Mapleton School and entertained the children by dressing “Pig” in a variety of costumes. She was a founding organizer of the Boulder Bach Festival. During her retirement in Burlington, she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Treble Clef and the Southeast Iowa Symphony. She enjoyed playing tennis, reading, singing, playing the piano and, especially, playing her violin. She loved her family and her pets, and was kind to everyone she knew.

Survivors include one son, William (Jill) Calhoun of Bloomsburg, PA; one daughter, Catherine (Ronald) Bosch of Roslindale, MA; five grandchildren, Emily & Samuel Calhoun, and Henry, Cooper & Mary Bosch; one sister, Jean (James) Neumann of Iowa City; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Friday, June 16, 2017 at Prugh’s Chapel.

The funeral service for Mrs. Calhoun will be 10:00 AM Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Carl Mann officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Big Muddy’s following the service. Burial will be at 3:00 PM in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Born May 6, 1935, in Burlington, he was the son of Lloyd William and Frances Manley Stewart. On May 8, 1998, he married Geneva Huss Loyd at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.

Lloyd worked for Antenna Craft.

He was a U.S. Veteran, serving in the Army for four years, and a Shore Patrolman in the Navy for 16 years.

Lloyd enjoyed fishing, bingo, shooting pool, bowling, going to the casino, hunting and camping. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at family gatherings.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva; one step-daughter, Sue (Ed Murphy) Loyd of Burlington; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, June Oge of Peoria, IL; two brothers, James Arthur Stewart of New London and William John Stewart of Mount Pleasant; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl and Jean; one brother, Paul; one step-son, Louis Loyd; and one grandson, Louis Loyd.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard until 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Matthew “Matt” Alan Barker, 41, of Burlington, died at 10:19 AM Monday, June 12, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center.

Born July 2, 1975, in Iowa city, IA, he was the son of Eric and Colleen Murphy Barker.

Matt graduated from Central Lee High School in 1993.He then attended SCC for two years and obtained his computer Science Technolgy degree.

He attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He enjoyed playing pool, working on computers, and all electronics.

Survivors include his parents; one sister, Leah Barker of West Burlington; one niece, Addilyn Barker of West Burlington; his paternal grandfather, Glen Barker of Fort Madison; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, and paternal grandmother.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

There will be no formal visitation or services at this time. Interment will be at a later date

Della Irene Waddell, age 80, of rural Wapello, died Wednesday morning, June 14, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The daughter of Guy and Blanche Bowdre Brown, she was born on March 10, 1937 in Toolesboro. Della married Jack Waddell on Jun 30, 1964 in Oquawka, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1995.

Della was a homemaker and had worked at Louis Rich in West Liberty and at Heinz in Muscatine. She enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing, dancing, and costume celebrations.

Her family includes two sons, Rick Smith & Lisa McKee of Wapello and Dugan & Sheri Smith of Letts; a daughter, Sherry George & Frank Hillman of Wapello; twelve grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; three sons, Donald Brown, Jack ‘Sam’ Waddell, and Guy ‘Joe’ Smith; a granddaughter, Jessie Smith; a great grandson, Evan; and a sister, Claudine Stigge.

A graveside ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Wapello Cemetery with Pastor Dan Doolin and Lawrence Stigge officiating.
