Elizabeth V. Osborn, 82, of Burlington, died at 8:06 AM Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at her home.

Born February 19, 1936, in , Mississippi, she was the daughter of Woodrow and Nettie Sue Dodson Hutchsen. On March 29, 1952, she married Otha L. Osborn in Avory, MS. He later passed on October 18, 2016.

Elizabeth worked as a housekeeper for the hospital.

She enjoyed fishing, watching fireworks shows and football, especially the Packers. She loved to volunteer at church and spend time with her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was a very good listener and passed on a lot of wisdom to the younger generations.

Survivors include four sons, Eric B. (Angela) Ausborn of Des Moines; Randy D. Osborn of Killeen, TX; Marty A. Osborn of HI; and Freddie L. Osborn of Burlington; four daughters, Otha Jean Reed Killens of Burlington; Renna Ausborn of Iowa City; Nadeen Ausborn of Quincy, IL; and Nettie Sue Osborn of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Friday, July 13, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Osborn will be 2:00 PM Friday, July 13, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Joe Arellano officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Burlington.

A memorial has been established.

Ron “RJ” Jackson, 76, of Danville, died at the Great River Hospice House, at 8:04 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018.
Friends may call after noon on Thursday, July 19th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends 5 until 7 p.m.
Memorial Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday July 20th at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Ned Fry officiating. Military rites will be held following the service by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Cremation has been accorded.
In lieu of flowers a memorial to the family has been established and may be sent in care of Lunning Chapel, 2620 Mt. Pleasant St., Burlington, IA 52601.

Judy Ann Asher, age 71, of Wapello, died Friday, July 13, 2018, at the Community Hospital North in Indianapolis, Indiana while on a vacation to Ohio. The daughter of Harry and Verna Shreve Garmoe, she was born on February 19, 1947 in Burlington. Judy married Edward ‘Eddie’ Asher on June 18, 1967 in Wapello. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1998.

She graduated from Danville High School and attended Burlington Business College. Judy operated the Asher Farm Kennels for over 30 years along with working at the Louisa County ASCS office, the Salvation Army in Burlington, Colonel’s Kids in Columbus Junction, Community Action in Columbus Junction, a para educator at Wapello High School, and important to her several years at Underwood Landscaping in Wapello.

Judy was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church and was involved in many church activities. She belonged to the Iowa Pet Breeders and was recognized a couple times as the Breeder of the Year. She had also belonged to the Morning Sun Saddle Club and earlier the Des Moines County Saddle Club. She actively was involved in showing her horses and dogs. She also enjoyed travelling, cooking, gardening, landscaping, and more recently her chickens. She did babysitting, and her best love was her grandchildren.

Her family includes four children, Aarren Asher of Wapello, Jann Asher of Davenport, Kristi & Lyle Leopard of Wapello, and Jodi & Jason Amundson of Henderson, Nevada; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Orville & Yvette Kerrwood of Port Charlotte, Florida and Lyle Garmoe of Burlington; a special friend, Kay Gerst; and like a daughter, Kim Schwartz and Dana Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eddie; a grandson, Benjamin; a sister, Donna Lewis; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Garmoe.

The funeral ceremony for Judy Asher will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery followed by a lunch gathering at the church.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Ronald Ray “RJ” Jackson, 76, of Danville passed away on July 13, 2018 at Great River Hospice House. Born August 28, 1941 in Grandview, Iowa, he was the son of Melvin “Sox” and Edith (Hingst) Jackson.

He married Delores Yaley on April 27, 1963.

Ron held many titles throughout his life including truck driver, heavy equipment operator, business owner, field tiler, salesman, racecar driver, track promoter, and US Army soldier. The Jackson family along with Al Samberg built 34 Raceway in 1965. Ron ran his first race there on opening night in 1966. He began racing Jalopies, then raced Sprint Cars, and spent the majority of his racing career driving Late Models. Ron won over 200 features in his lifetime and always gave his fans something to cheer about. His most prestigious wins were two Iowa State Fair Championships, and The Miller 100. When Ron’s racing career came to an end, he became the promoter at 34 Raceway and was recognized as “Promoter of the Year” in 1999. Ron was a great friend to many and never knew a stranger. His greatest days were spent on the race track and with his family and friends.

Ron is survived by his wife, Delores, daughter, Kelli (Rusty) Vaughn of Paxton, Illinois, son, Chris of Danville, granddaughter, Kelsey Vaughn, two brothers, Gene (Ruth) Jackson of Wapello, and Ken (Rosie) Jackson of Burlington, brothers in law and sisters in law, Jim (Linda) Yaley and Gary (JoAnn) Yaley of Denmark, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Rowdy.

Friends may call after noon on Thursday, July 19th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20th at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Ned Fry officiating. Frances Geneva Hartman, 102, of West Burlington, died at 8:50 AM Monday, July 16, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born September 21, 1915, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry J. and Bertha R. Shullaw Wickhart. On December 1, 1951, she married Leo Edward in Burlington, Iowa. He passed on November 3, 2006.

She was of Methodist faith. She enjoyed art work, painting, and sewing. She was a great cook.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda J. Kelley of Henderson, NV; three grandsons, Kevin (Pam) Peterson and Jarrin Peterson both of Burlington, and Brian Beebe of Birmingham, IA; five great-grandchildren: Nathan (Randee) Peterson, Grant Peterson, Jacob Peterson and two others all of Burlington; one sister and one brother.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and three brothers.

The graveside committal service for Mrs. Hartman will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Patricia Rhea Aaberg (Hallowell), 69, died peacefully after a brief illness in Corinth, Mississippi on April 6, 2018.

Pat was born on January 18, 1949 in Muscatine, Iowa to Henry (Hank) Rhea and Lillian Marie (Green) Hallowell. She graduated from La Harpe High School in 1967. She graduated from the College of the Ozarks with two degrees in teaching. In 1974, she joined the Army and was assigned to Fort Dix where she served as a Recreational Specialist. She was transferred to Tripler Army Base in Hawaii and was honorably discharged as an Staff Sergeant. Due to injuries sustained while on Active Duty, she was designated as a disabled veteran.

She received her master’s degree while in Hawaii in 1982. She moved to Fruitland Park, Florida on a permanent basis in 2001 where she cared for her mother until her death in 2007. She was a member of the American Legion Post 219 in Fruitland Park. On November 9, 2004 (Veteran’s Day), she married Donald Martin Aaberg. They moved from Florida to Adamsville, Tennessee in 2010.

Pat had a passion for painting. She painted many pictures for family and friends, specializing in pastels. She was known for her quick wit, infectious smile, magnetic personality and her kind and compassionate spirit.

Pat was preceded in death by her father, Hank, her mother, Marie and her brother, Donald W. Hallowell and her stepson William Aaberg. She is survived by her husband Donald, and her beloved grandchild Liberty Jane Bean and many lifelong friends including Margaret Haecherl of Nashville, TN, Kathy Butler of Blandinsville, Ill., and Betty Quigle of Smyrna, TN.

Pastor Paul Hughes, 92, of New London, died Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at
Great River Hospice, West Burlington.  Services are pending at Elliott

Samuel W. Stevenson, 83, of Gladstone, IL died at 12:10 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at home.
Born October 22, 1934 in Carman, IL he was the son of Arthur Wendell Stevenson & Esteline G. Munson Stevenson Griffin.
He married Bernita M. Weigert of New London, IA on September 28, 1957. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary last year.
He was a graduate of the Gladstone-Oquawka High School in 1952. After graduation he worked one year at the Iowa Ordnance Plant and in 1953 enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served 16 months in Korea. He was discharged in 1956 having attained the rank of Buck Sergeant.
After he was discharged he returned home and became a life-long farmer of the family farm. In his early years he served on the ASC Board in Stronghurst, IL and was a member of the Carman Methodist Church and Hend-Co Hills Country Club. He loved animals and always adopted the stray dogs and cats that came to the farm. He was very much a family man and loved socializing with all his friends and relatives. They knew they could always count on him for help. He collected Native American artifacts that he found on the farm, liked to play cards, attend all the activities of the children and grand-children, liked to watch-old time movies and listen to country music. His favorite singers were George Strait and Patsy Cline.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Bradley (Lynne) Stevenson of Galesburg, IL & Brian Stevenson (Sherri Marshall) of rural Gladstone, IL, five Grand-Children, Paige & Tyler Stevenson of New London, Haley, Chelsea & Riley Stevenson of Galesburg, IL, three sisters, Berniece Pettinger of Burlington, Marie Meeker of Mediapolis, Angeline Anderson of Dunnellon, FL, three sisters-in-law, Nancy Stevenson of Gladstone, IL, Kay Stevenson of Oquawka, IL, Dolores Stevenson of Burlington, as well as several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grand-parents, parents & four brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gladstone Methodist Church or Henderson County Health Department Hospice.
Visitation will be 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Sunday, July 24, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Stevenson will be 10:00 AM, Monday, July 23, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Howard Ross officiating. Burial will be in Carman Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Gladstone Methodist Church following the burial.

Thomas William Sater, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, July 27, 2018 at Savannah Heights, Mt. Pleasant. He was born January 20, 1949 in Mt. Pleasant to William O. and Helen E. Warth Sater.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 3rd at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Trey Hegar will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 9 PM on Thursday at Kimzey Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 5 – 7 PM. Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant; Midwest Old Threshers; and Dover Museum, New London.

Sharon Kay Borton, 73, of New London, died Thursday, July 26, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family.

The funeral service for Mrs. Borton will be 2:00, August 4th, at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating. Interment will follow at Burge Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 AM, Saturday at the chapel with the family present to greet friends from noon – 2:00.

Rodney Cratsenberg, 65, of LaHarpe, IL passed away July 31, 2018 at the LaHarpe -Davier Health Care Center Apartments.

Rodney was born September 3, 1952 in LaHarpe the son of Roland and Margaret Johnson Cratsenberg.

He was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school he received his bachelors degree from Western Illinois University. He worked as a Spanish Teacher at the Rushville High School, Rushville, IL. He later worked as an auctioneer, realtor and farmed with his father, Roland. He was a member of the LaHarpe Lions Club, LaHarpe Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellow’s, and the LaHarpe Christian Church where he sang in the choir. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and music and singing. Rodney was a caring, selfless and strong Christian man.

Survivors include several cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the LaHarpe Cemetery with Nate McCarter officiating. Odd Fellow’s Rites will be conducted at the graveside. Masonic Rites will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday, August 6 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe followed by visitation with the family until 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church. Anne Armstrong, 89, formerly of Burlington, passed peacefully at 3:15 AM Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the Brighton Gardens of Omaha in Omaha, NE.

Born April 29, 1929, in Denver, CO, she was the daughter of William C. and Anna M. Traudt Horst. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1947.

On October 15, 1948, she married Roderick William Armstrong in Burlington. He passed away July 24, 2013.

Anne was a secretary and later became a Executive Assistant to the Plant Manager at Mason Hanger Silas Mason. She was recognized for her outstanding performance as National Secretary of the Year while working there.

She unequivocally loved her children and grandchildren and wanted them to have fun. She enjoyed waterskiing at the islands on the Mississippi river and taught many of the family how to decorate Christmas cookies and make pies. A long time Jeopardy fan, she enjoyed game shows and recently discovered Cash Cab.

Survivors include one daughter, Carol Thistlethwaite of San Francisco, CA; two sons, Roger (Colleen) Armstrong of Burlington, Eric (Hillary Parker) Armstrong of Carter Lake, IA; four grandchildren, Roderick Armstrong, Nathan Armstrong, Erin Armstrong Hernandez, Christy Lucas; two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one son-in-law, and one great-grandchild.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Armstrong will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Dean Graber officiating.

Larry Lee Kane 81, of rual LaHarpe, IL died at 4:05 AM Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the Oak View Nursing and Rehabilitation in Burlington, IA.
He was born near Stronghurst, IL on September 7, 1936, The son of Everett and Nedra Logan Kane of Lomax, IL. On May 6, 1961 he married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Ann Cassell in a military wedding at Ft. Benning, GA.
He received his early education in Monmouth, Il and graduated from Dallas Ciy High School where he was chosen by the American Legion to attend Boy’s State in 1954. After several years of college, he enlisted in the Armed Forces, attended Officer’s Candidate School and was later sent to Germany. Returning to the States, he completed his college education and graduated from Iowa Wesleyn College. Thus, began his 36 year career with General Electric Co. In Burlington, IA and Mt. Laurel, NJ. After retirement in 1999, he enjoyed spending his winters in Naples, FL.
A man of friendly manner, genial personality and good character, Larry was a credit to his family, his church and his community and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted family man, living his whole life entirely for his wife and children. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating with his friends and working in the timber and especially going mushrooming. He and Mary Ann were animal lovers and were known for raising orphaned baby raccoons and German Shepherds. He took great pride in maintaining his home, garden and yard. He was an avid reader. He and his wife especially enjoyed summers spent hiking in the Grand Tetons in WY.
Larry was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City where he had served on the church board and lectured and ushered for many years. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Nauvoo, IL.
He volunteered for 17 years with the Boy Scout program in LaHarpe, taking many hikes and camping trips. He served as a Scout Master and was chairman of the Board for both the Cub and Boy Scouts for many years. In 1976, he was the recipient of the District Award of Merit from the Saukee Area Council of Boy Scouts for his service to the youth of the community. He still continued to conduct the annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby car races for many years thereafter. He guided his two sons through the ranks of Eagle Scouts and was instrumental in supervising the building of the Boy Scout Cabin on the site of Ft. La Harpe in 1976, which is still in use today.
In 1993 he was awarded the La Harpe Summerfest Humanitarian Award. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word, always opening doors for his beloved wife.
Survivors include his wife and three children: Gregg Kane, Hinsdale, IL; Jennifer Junker, Warrenton, MO; Shawn Kane, Austin, TX. Eight surviving grandchildren include: Jessica, Sarah, Ethan, Will Kane; Jakob and Sawyer Junker; and Jade and Jazmyn Kane and his nearly like a brother, Greg Wisslead. He will be missed by his devoted four legged companion, Skye, who will not understand his absence. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, August 3, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City, IL with Father Tom Szydlik officiating. Buria,l with military rites, will be in the Gittings Mound Cemetery, rural Dallas City. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where a prayer service will be held at 4:30 followed by a visitation with the family from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Harry Thompson, 83, of Burlington, died at 1:05 AM Monday, August 6, 2018.

Harry F. Thompson was born October 2, 1934 in Burlington; the thirteenth child of fourteen born to Grover Cleveland and Catherine Burrows Thompson.

He was a Burlington High School graduate in the class of 1953.

He married Mary Jo Brenneke on February 14, 1954. Harry and Mary Jo were the parents of three children; Pamela, Jeffrey, and Rebecca. Harry and Mary Jo later divorced.

He married Judy Young Estes on September 17, 1976 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They repeated their vows on October 13, 1976 in Burlington. Judy’s daughter, Kim Diamond, adopted Harry as the father she’d always wanted.

Harry worked for White House Dairy, Atlas Warehouse, drove a moving van for Allied Van Lines, and was a bus driver for Trailways Bus Lines. He retired in 1996.

Harry enjoyed horse trading and fishing. He liked gaming on the computer and was a great pool player.

Harry was preceded in death by his wife Judy on September 12, 2001; step-daughter Kim on June 24, 2006; his brothers: Richard, Dale, Kenneth, James, and 2 infant brothers, and sisters Virginia, Mary, Betty, Doris, Dorothy, and Helen.

Surviving is his sister Patsy Schmeiser of Winfield and Mt. Pleasant; and two sister-in-laws, Shirley Thompson and Patty Thompson Curtis.

Also surviving are his daughters: Pamela Moore and Rebecca Thompson of Burlington; one son, Jeffrey (Deanna) Thompson of rural Wever; and his special companion Norma Tomey and her daughter, Barb Graham and grandson Jacob.

He is survived also by five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; Many nieces and nephews.

Per Harry’s wishes cremation will be accorded and there will be no formal visitation or services at this time.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Mr. Ben Oliver Heap, 92, of Media, IL died at 1:30 PM Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
He was born July 4, 1926 in Media, the son of Perry Oliver and Mary Sullivan Heap. On April 30, 1949 he married Katherine Masters in Burlington, IA. She preceded him in death on May 10, 2001.
Mr. Heap was 1944 graduate of the Media-Wever High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He farmed near Media for most of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Ideal Hunting Club.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Judy (Don) DeLaney of Hurdland, MO and Susan Heap of Media, 1 son, Alan (Jeanie) Heap of St. Cloud, FL, 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, 1 brother, James Heap and his parents.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, IL with Steve Minkler officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, near Media. The family will meet with friends, Tuesday, from noon until time of services at the funeral home. Kathy (Cornic) Bartoe, 67, of Burlington died Friday, August 3, 2018 at her home.

Born August 8, 1950 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Virginia (Grupy) Cornic. She married Robert “Bob” Glick. They later divorced.

Kathy graduated in 1968 from Burlington High School. She worked as a teacher’s associate at Corse School for several years until 2015. She was previously also a building permit inspector for Collier County in Naples, Florida for many years. She was of the Methodist faith.

She loved anything and everything to do with Elvis Presley. She enjoyed watching Nancy Grace and crime shows. She loved the color pink, poodles and her cat “Lucy.” She loved listening to 50’s and 60’s music and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her three children; Jason (Lisa) Glick of Ft. Harry Thompson, 83, of Burlington, died at 1:05 AM Monday, August 6, 2018.

Harry F. Thompson was born October 2, 1934 in Burlington; the thirteenth child of fourteen born to Grover Cleveland and Catherine Burrows Thompson.

He was a Burlington High School graduate in the class of 1953.

He married Mary Jo Brenneke on February 14, 1954. Harry and Mary Jo were the parents of three children; Pamela, Jeffrey, and Rebecca. Harry and Mary Jo later divorced.

He married Judy Young Estes on September 17, 1976 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They repeated their vows on October 13, 1976 in Burlington. Judy’s daughter, Kim Diamond, adopted Harry as the father she’d always wanted.

Harry worked for White House Dairy, Atlas Warehouse, drove a moving van for Allied Van Lines, and was a bus driver for Trailways Bus Lines. He retired in 1996.

Harry enjoyed horse trading and fishing. He liked gaming on the computer and was a great pool player.

Harry was preceded in death by his wife Judy on September 12, 2001; step-daughter Kim on June 24, 2006; his brothers: Richard, Dale, Kenneth, James, and 2 infant brothers, and sisters Virginia, Mary, Betty, Doris, Dorothy, and Helen.

Surviving is his sister Patsy Schmeiser of Winfield and Mt. Pleasant; and two sister-in-laws, Shirley Thompson and Patty Thompson Curtis.

Also surviving are his daughters: Pamela Moore and Rebecca Thompson of Burlington; one son, Jeffrey (Deanna) Thompson of rural Wever; and his special companion Norma Tomey and her daughter, Barb Graham and grandson Jacob.

He is survived also by five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; Many nieces and nephews.

Per Harry’s wishes cremation will be accorded and there will be no formal visitation or services at this time.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Bruce Donald Wilson, 54, of Burlington, died at 1:21 PM Sunday, August 5, 2018, at home.

Born September 18, 1963, he was the son of Donald E. and Dorothy Jean Neff Wilson. On December 1, 2006, he married Sherry L. Williamson.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from January 11, 1985 until December 31, 2010, retiring after 26 years.

Bruce was a sports fanatic. He was a Cubs, Bears, and Hawkeye fan. He was a great pool player, he also enjoyed playing Nintendo with his kids. Bruce was a jack of all trades, he could fix anything. Bruce had a great sense of humor, he loved people, most of all his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry, of Burlington; one daughter Heather(Scott) Summers and one son Blake Wilson both of Goldsboro NC; one brother, Daniel Wilson of Burlington; three sisters, Linda (Michael) Vorwerk of Hamilton, NJ, Sharon (Tony) Stuart of New London, Lori Warner of Charlotte, NC; one brother in law Andy Prawitz.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ann Prawitz and Debbie Derby.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM, Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Wilson will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 9, 2018, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir led by Sue Hackenmiller. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Burlington. Full military honors will be rendered by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.

Lois Mae Dowell, 95, of Burlington, IA, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Oakview Nursing Home in Burlington.
Lois was born on January 21, 1923, in Sperry, IA, the daughter of Hazel and William Granaman. She married Leon Dowell on July 27, 1938.
Lois grew up on a farm near Sperry and attended Sperry Consolidated School. Her parents taught her the importance of family and the value of hard work, and she never forgot either lesson.
She was employed by GE for several years and then worked at Champion Industries, where she worked for 32 years before retiring at the age of 70. Her supervisor once said she was his most dedicated employee, rarely missing a day and always giving more than 100% effort to the job.
She was a member of Sperry Methodist Church and later attended Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington.
She was an avid gardener for most of her life, sharing her produce and canned goods with friends and family. She also loved to cook and bake bread. No one at her table ever went hungry. She was also a talented seamstress.
Throughout her life, she devoted much of her time and energy to her children and grandchildren, who she loved to be with and help any way she could. She was small in stature, but known for having one of the biggest hearts anyone could ever have.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Gary Dowell of Burlington, and Larry Dowell and his wife, Dorothy, of Lakewood, IL. Other survivors include seven beloved grandchildren: Sheryl Mark of Sarasota, FL; Brent Dowell of Reno, NV; Greg Dowell of Lake in the Hills, IL; Todd Dowell of Grain Valley, MO; Wendi Stewart of Middletown; Dawn Thurman of North Liberty; and Brian Dowell of Burlington. She also leaves behind 11 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and five step great great grandchildren.
She is also survived by one sister, Betty Brockway of Burlington, and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son Monte; two granddaughters, Brandee Dowell and Mindy Dowell; two sisters, Evelyn Murguia and Shirley Hales; and one niece.
The Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Tom Stuart Hainey, 71, of Burlington, died at 8:45 AM Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born December 31, 1946, in Muscatine, he was the son of Vern Lee and Ruth F. Partington Hainey.

Tom was a welder/fork truck driver at J.I. Case Co for 30 years before retiring.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from January 31, 1964 until January 20, 1967.

He was a member of the UAW local #807 and a past member of the Lions Club in Illinois and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed working with livestock, the outdoors, the Dallas Cowboys, reading westerns, listening to country music, and loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. Tom dreamed of owning his favorite car; a 1957 Ford Thunderbird.

Survivors include his two daughters: Christina (Scott) Erickson and Kimberly Orton both of Burlington; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one on the way; one brother, Lee (Mona) Hainey of Wapello; four sisters, Nancy Wehage and Barbara Beeding both of Wapello, Betty Bockman of Zephyr Hills, FL, and Kathy Wickham of Cedar Rapids; several nieces and nephews; and his life-long friend, Jack West.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers-in-law: Jerry Wickham, Bill Beeding, Dale Wehage, and Bill Bockman.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Monday, August 13, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Mary Alice Parker, 78, of Burlington, died at 8:45 AM Friday, August 10, 2018, at her home.

Born October 30, 1939, in Missouri, she was the daughter of Curtis Leo and Eathel Octavia Palmer. On August 26, 1962, she married William Wayne Parker in Burlington. He later passed on April 14, 2013.

Mary worked at Midwest Biscuit Company and for Lamont Limited. She retired after over 30 years of service.

Mary enjoyed gardening, embroidery, playing card games, and animals, especially birds. Her favorite was the red cardinal. She also enjoyed going to see her son and grandson’s baseball games, and taking them to go see Bee’s games. She adored spending time with her friends and family.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin (Kimberly) Parker of Burlington; Tony (Amy) Parker of Bismarck, AR, one daughter, Belinda K. Parker of Burlington, six grandchildren, Kirstie, Brady, Tyler, Justin, Kyle, Jesse, and Erica, four great-grandsons, Ayden, Jackson, Asher, and Arden, one sister, Kay Palmer; one aunt, Lucille Manning; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters; Wilma Cain, ArlaMae “Chubby” Palmer, and Darlene Courtney.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Jack R. Krasuski, 70, of Burlington died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, August, 9, 2018 at Great River Medical Center.
Born September 17, 1947 in Burlington, he was the son of George H. and Blanche M. (Schulz) Krasuski. He married Becky G. Ellerhoff August 26, 1978 in Middletown, IA. They later divorced.
Jack grew up attending First Methodist Church. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1965. His senior year he was a sprinter on the track team that travelled to the Drake Relays and State Track Meet, where he received many medals. He went on to graduate from Burlington Junior College and University of Iowa with a BS in Accounting. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War with boots on the ground. He worked for Murry Ironworks and in 1985 began working for Ceco Building Systems in Mt. Pleasant, IA, as a controller, retiring April 2010.
Jack belonged to the Shoquoquon Boat Club, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and VFW. He loved deer, duck and pheasant hunting, mushrooming and fishing. He enjoyed fishing and on Lake of Woods, Canada. He enjoyed watching sports, playing on a pool league, playing cards, boating and golfing. He loved spending time with his daughter and nephews. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Bears fan, and also cheered for whatever team Kurt Warner was playing for. He never missed Jill’s sporting events or concerts.
Survivors include daughter Jill Krasuski of Minneapolis, MN; sisters, Karen (Arlo Halsey) Fairchild of Hugo, MN, and Joyce (Kim) Wagner of Topeka, KS; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; many cousins and friends; and aunts, Dorothy Kelly of West Burlington, IA and Kathleen Mason of Baraboo, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Cheryl A. Loring, 63, of Burlington, was called into heaven at 5:57 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Great River Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Born October 12, 1954 in Ottumwa, Iowa, she was the daughter of Virgil and Doris (Sipes) Curtis. She married Edward E. Loring on March 7, 1974 in Jacksonville, IL.
Cheryl graduated from Pekin High School in 1972 and later attended Keokuk Nursing School. She was a self-employed house cleaner for 37 years. She was a member of Harmony Bible Church, Burlington. Her hobbies included swimming, fishing, and spending time with her grandchildren, sending cards for any and every occasion, kayaking, taking photos of family members for lasting memories and eating ice cream. Cheryl loved everybody and was a very caring wife, mom, grandma and sister. Her kindness was not a weakness, but rather a strength that was infectious, making everyone around her happier and better.
Survivors include her husband Edward of 44 years; daughter Brandi (Andy) Blunck and grandsons Devin and Carter of Davenport, IA; son, Brandon Loring and grandson Baily of Burlington; sisters, Linda O’Rourke of Osprey, FL, Elaine Woosley of Bloomfield, IA and Janice Anderson of Wayland, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant sisters.

Martha Lynn Smith, 65, of Burlington, formerly of Louisiana, died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Great River Hospice House.

Born on March 7, 1953 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Roy Charles and Betty Elaine (Hopewell) Ertz.

Martha graduated from Burlington High School and received her teaching degree from Southern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA. From 1980-87 she served in the United States Navy as a computer programmer, stationed in Japan for three of those years. She later resided in Louisiana and worked for the water department in the administrative office.

Martha was of the Catholic faith. Her hobbies included fishing and reading. She always enjoyed a good shrimp boil and visiting Lake Pontchartrain. She loved riding around the countryside looking at the Mississippi River, and had a special interest in helping children.

Survivors include her son, Beau (Rose) Barker, active military command SGT Major, training at Fort Bliss, TX; grandson, Nolan; siblings, Roy T. Ertz of Glendale, AZ, Robert “Bo” (Laura) Ertz of Columbia, MO, Mary (Gordon) Cho of Aiea, HI, Timothy (Becky) Ertz of AL, Angela (Kirk) Angeron of Hammond, LA, Mark Ertz of Burlington and Joe (Christine) Ertz of West Burlington; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

John E. Osborne, 80, of West Burlington, died at 4:50 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
Born April 24, 1938, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of William Harold and Margaret Marie (Fitzgerald) Osborne. On September 29, 1956, he married Carolyn K. Peterson in Burlington, IA.
John graduated from BHS in 1956. John started his career as a tool & die maker by trade. He worked in management positions for Coppes-Murray in Burlington, Caterpillar in Mt. Joy, Iowa and finished his career retiring from Burlington Northern Railroad in West Burlington.
John enjoyed serving as a volunteer fireman for many years in Blue Grass, IA. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge #579, coached sports for his children and was an avid Hawkeye, Green Bay Packer and Nascar fan.
John was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle & friend. He has filled our lives with joy and will be missed by so many.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn of 62 years; two daughters; Dawn (Junior) Sweeney of Blue Springs, MO, Angela (Brent) Hicks of Celina, Texas; one son; Darl (Diane) Osborne of Davenport, Iowa: six grandchildren; Brent, Theresa, Dustin, Danielle, Darrin “Biggie Boy”, Taylor “TJ”; Seven Great-grandchildren; Evelyn, Ava, Vincent, Joey, Elena, Chris Jr., Marcus; two brothers; William Jr. and James of Burlington.

Merle Tisor, 71, of Burlington, died at 8:38 AM Sunday, August 19, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born September 22, 1946, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, he was the son of Donald Merle and Faye Ballinger Tisor. He married Janice Vandiver in April of 1967. They later divorced. On May 14, 1988, he married Connie Bock Lyons in Naples, Florida.
Merle worked on the line at General Electric for 38 years and later retired.
He graduated from Burlington High School in 1964. He attended SCC.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from 1966 until 1969.
Merle enjoyed golfing and fishing. He also loved walking his dog, Jake, his forever friend.

Survivors include his wife, Connie; two daughters, Amanda (Adam) Fawcett, and Michelle (Corey) Graham, both of Burlington; two step-sons, Sean (Tara) Lyons of Anchorage, AL, and Christopher (Michelle) Lyons of Kansas City, KA; one step-daughter, Amanda (Francisco) Sanchez-Losada of San Diego, CA; seven grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and two half-brothers John and Teddy McCully.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his father-in-law Richard Bock.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. Tisor will be 7:00 pm Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker officiating. Frederick Clyde West Sr., 84, of Burlington, IA, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.

He was born July 28, 1934 at the Burlington Hospital. His parents were Percy Harmon and Minnie Sourwine. He was raised by Walter D. West and Minnie Sourwine West Ballard in the Oakville area. His stepfather was Robert Ballard.

He was a member of Latty Evangelical Church. He started school at Huron School, then attended Latty one room school through eighth grade. He went to Oak Street School in Burlington, IA his freshman year then transferred to Sperry Consolidated School his Sophomore year and graduated there in 1952.

He married Iowna Kay Russell in 1954. They divorced. He married Rita Frederick in 1973.

He worked many jobs but ended his career as a salesman for Sweetheart Bakery after 30 years. He enjoyed his family, gardening (well known for his tomatoes) his ’56 Ford, Smith Auctions, and was very proud that he donated 200 pints of whole blood. He was the family photographer.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; six children, Pamela Walz (Larry Covington) of Mt. Vernon, IA, Rhonda (Richard) Rowe of Jonesburg, MO, Fred West Jr. (Abby) of Mediapolis, IA, Walter “Wally” (Seanne) West of Sperry, IA, Curtiss (Kellie) West of Burlington, IA and Carla Dee (Edward) Shannon of Bartlett, IL; sixteen grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Marie West Wolbers of New Port Richey, FL; one brother, Robert (Martha) Ballard of Wytheville, VA; ex-spouse, Iowna Kay West of Burlington, IA; son in law, Tom Walz of Burlington, IA; many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ben West, and one grandson, Jordan Frederick West.

Virgina M. Cleland, 89, of Burlington, died at 8:58 PM Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at the Great River Klein’s Center in West Burlington.

Born June 23, 1929, in Broomall, PA, she was the daughter of Alvin and Mary Britton Cleland. She married Donald R. Mackie in Topeka, KS, they later divorced.

She retired from the Burlington Basket Company, where she worked for 30 years.

She graduated from Broomall High School in Pennsylvania.

She was of Christian faith. She enjoyed gardening and reading and loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Rick (Vicki) Mackie of Port Charlotte, FL, Jeff (Kathy) Mackie of Burlington, and Tom Mackie of Norwich, England; 7 grandchildren: Jenny (Opie) Stark, Sara Mackie (Kody), Josh Mackie (Brit), Matthew Riffel (Mike), Erin Riffel (Mike), Jessie Mackie and Brandon Mackie; 6 great-grandchildren: Alex, Avery, Lawson, Josie, Mason and Sienna; one brother, Jack (Mary) Cleland of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Connie, and her twin sister, Jeanett.

Kathleen Elizabeth Swander, 81, of West Burlington died Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in her home.

Born July 26, 1936 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Webster Harvey and Florence Elizabeth (Pearson) Eads. She married Albert Leonard Swander on September 30, 1972 in Burlington. He died February 20, 2004.

Kathleen worked as a Secretary for 33 years for the Des Moines County Department of Human Services. She retired in 1988. She was a graduate of Huron High School and attended Burlington School of Business. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was an avid sports fan, primarily girls’ softball. She was known to attend and even travel to out of town games to watch. She loved watching TV, playing games and going out to eat with her extended family. She was very devoted to caring for her mother and husband and cherished her dog Pierre.

Survivors include two nieces; Nance Tucker of Peotone, Illinois and Karen Shannon of Ocean Side, California; niece-in-law, Nancy Eads of West Point, Iowa; sister-in-law Ellen Eads of Kankakee, Illinois; two great nieces and two great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, James Eads and two nephews, Jim R. Eads and Michael Eads.

The memorial funeral service for Mrs. Swander will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, September 1st at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Ryan Cosgrove will officiate. Inurnment will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Lisa Hall, 51, of La Harpe, died at 7:04 AM Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born December 13, 1966, in Macomb, IL, she was the daughter of Mason Dayne and Cecilia Catherine Leighty Hall. On May 24, 1997, she was united in life with Robbin Todd as soul mates.

Lisa enjoyed watching Demolition Derby races and NCIS, she liked to cook and go fishing. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family.

Survivors include her mother, Cecilia; life partner, Robbin of La Harpe, IL; one daughter, Christina Hall of La Harpe, IL; two brothers, Thomas (Michelle) Hall and David (Tina) Hall both of Burlington; one grandson, Mathias Wisener; her chosen sister, Jessie Reynolds of Burlington; four nieces: Brianne, Katie, Kyra, and Julia; one nephew: Kyle; many great-nieces and nephews; several cousins, aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Friday, August 31, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Esther Melvin Shoemate, 87, of Macomb, IL passed away Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb.

She was born January 3, 1931 in LaHarpe, IL, the daughter of Lyle Franklin and Ethel Louise Schultz Melvin. On May 29, 1948 she married Bill Shoemate. They later divorced.

Esther was raised in LaHarpe where she attended school through her junior year and graduated from the Warsaw, IL High School. She then attended the College of Commerce in Burlington, IA. She worked at the Post Office in Table Grove, IL, and for 21 years she worked as a bookkeeper for Farm King in Macomb. She served as the Farmers Township Auditor for 2 terms and was also the treasurer for the village of Table Grove. She was a member of the Maple Avenue Christian Church in Macomb.

Surviving are one daughter, Carol (George Newman) Dodds of Plymouth, IL, one son, William (Janice) Shoemate of Quincy, IL, five grandchildren, Lexy Deford, Matt and Jamie Dodds and Sarah and Alex Shoemate, two great-great-grandchildren, James Robert Dodds and Kayden Alexander Dodds, one sister, Erma (Monte) Geddes of Mediapolis, IA, one niece, three nephews and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Melvin and her parents.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Donnie Case officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery. James Merlin Larson, age 75 of Wapello, died Friday August 31, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House. The son of Merlin and Evelyn (Gipple) Larson, he was born August 15, 1943 at Muscatine. He married Betty Mullen Bohling November 18, 1988 at Wapello.
He was a graduate of the L&M high School He served in the US Army from 1966-68 during the Viet Nam War. He worked as a union pipe fitter. He was a member of the Louisa County area Viet Nam Veterans.
Survivors include: his wife Betty of Wapello; one daughter Lynette Larson of Muscatine and a son Greg Larson of Muscatine; four step children, Margaret Kamm, Jacqueline Bohling, Melanee Shirlow and Terry Bohling; five grandchildren; two brothers Jack and Mark of Mediapolis; He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Leonard.
The funeral service will be Wednesday September September 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with Rev. Dan Schoepf officiating. Interment will follow at the Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00-11:00 prior to the service. A general memorial has been established in his name.

Richard (Dick) Lee Eckhardt, 82, of Burlington, died at 6:40 AM Thursday, August 30, 2018, at his home in Burlington after an extended battle with cancer.

Born October 15, 1935, in Lomax, IL, he was the son of James and Cora Lillian Pershing Eckhardt. On April 12, 1958, he married Ellen Mae Huffaker in Ft. Madison.

Richard was employed for 38 years as a supervisor with Mason Hanger/Silas Mason Company retiring in 1996. In 1997, he began working part-time for the City of Burlington until 2002. He also served one term as city councilman from 1982 until 1985. Dick was a 1953 graduate of Dallas City High School and attended the University of New Mexico for three years. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from 1953 until 1957.

Richard was a member of Divine Mercy Parish Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #568 4th Degree, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #150 and Moose Lodge #579. He was active in American Little League Baseball as a manager, assistant manager and player representative. Dick played fast pitch softball, golf and pool. His enjoyment also included watching Hawkeye Athletics along with many NCAA sports. He was a car and airplane enthusiast. Richard had a special place in his heart for spending time with his family and friends.

Dick served on the Parish Council for SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, served on the Notre Dame School Board and also was an usher and lector at church.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen; three sons, Dennis (Annette) Eckhardt of Bettendorf, Jay (Julie) Eckhardt of Ft. Madison, and, Richard (Kristin) Eckhardt of Bettendorf; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother-in-law.

Family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM, Monday, September 3, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Eckhardt will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. James Jr. Woodside, 87, of LaHarpe, IL, passed away 5:43pm Friday, August 31, 2018 at the Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL.

James was born on July 26, 1931 in Burnside, IL, the son of Lloyd James and Dorothy Turner Woodside. On September 2, 1951 he married Correna Vradenburg. She preceded him in death on February 6, 1982. On April 10, 1984 he married Deloris Burford Comstock. She survives.

James was a graduate of the LaHarpe High School. He worked as a tractor mechanic for over 40 years. He and his brother-in-law, Gale Powelson, owned and operated LaHarpe Tractor Repair Service for many years. He also taught tractor mechanics at Carl Sandburg’s Fountain Green school. Mr. Woodside never met a stranger, had a great sense of humor and was still a farmboy at heart. He enjoyed raising cattle and would treat them like pets, often naming them. He loved visiting the Smokey Mountains, reading, working in his yard, driving his truck, which was his pride and joy and visiting with friends over coffee at the restaurant.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris, one son Lee (Ginger) Woodside of Tennessee, IL, two daughters, Kay (Michael) Aldridge of Mackinaw, IL and Denise Woodside of Carthage, IL. one step-son, Stephen (Linda) Comstock, of LaHarpe and one step-daughter, Julie (Rich) Gacke of Davenport, IA, one granddaughter, Michaell (Matt) Zimmerman, six step-grandchildren, Marinda (Terry) Lund, Kyle Gacke, Brian Gacke, Adam (Ashley) Gacke, John Aldridge and Tony Comstock, three great-grandchildren, Ryann, Charlie and Jack Zimmerman and two step-great-grandchildren, Bo and Scarlett Gacke.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, two grandchildren, Sherry Woodside and Steven Aldridge and three brothers, Gary, Jerome and Wayne Woodside.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Roy Samuel Frownfelter, age 95 of Mediapolis, died Saturday September 1, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis. The son of Plin and Minnie (Myers) Frownfelter, he was born February 17, 1923 at Burlington. On September 12, 1954 he married Devene Partington at Wapello, she died September 15, 2007.
He was a 1942 graduate of the Mediapolis High School. He worked on the high school work crew and drove a school bus .He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII from 1943-46. In early years he worked in constructing the IAAP and was a lifelong farmer. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include: one daughter Janice (Hal) Jensen of Altoona; one son Keith (Edna) Frownfelter of Mediapolis; four step grandchildren, Angie Jensen, Melissa Jensen, Scott Stanton, and Pete Stanton; He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers Howard, Max and twin brother Ray; a stepdaughter Bobbie Jo Royal;

Joan “Joni” C. Smith passed away on August 31, 2018 at Dobson Ranch Hospice of the Valley, Chandler, Arizona. She was born on August 31, 1943 to Elmer and Carol Melcher Giese. She grew up in Burlington attending Notre Dame and Burlington High Schools.

On September 27, 1986 she married Gary Smith. They renewed their vows on June 28, 2010, which was their 25th wedding anniversary.

Joan was a life- time member of St John’s Catholic Church and after moving to Mesa, AZ she joined Christ The King Church. Joan was a 4H leader when her daughters were young. Joan was an excellent seamstress not only making all of her daughters clothes. She entered a beautiful coat in the county fair winning a blue ribbon. She also helped with music boosters.

Joan retired from Wagner Elevator where she was a business manager. After retirement Joan and her husband moved to Mesa, Arizona where she enjoyed golf, reading, taking long walks and spending time with friends. They returned to Burlington every summer to see their beloved daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren who were the greatest joy of her life.

Joan is survived by Gary, her husband and daughters Beth Anne (Terry) Partridge of St. Charles, IL, Christina Sue (Dave) Warren of Ankeny, IA and Amy Pilger of Burlington. She is also survived by her brothers James (Carmel) Giese of Houston, TX and Jerry (Sandy) Giese of Burlington, IA, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren expected in February, and 3 step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her in laws and a great granddaughter.

There will be a visitation for Joni will be Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM with a Memorial Celebration at 10:00 AM at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Dorothy Mae Cratton, 82, of Burlington, died Sunday, September 2, 2018, at her home.

Born July 26, 1936, in Charleston, MO, she was the daughter of Allen and Corrine Phillips Swayzer.

She retired from J.I. Case after 20 years of service.

She was of Baptist faith and was a member of Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Her favorite color was lavender. She loved to socialize with her beloved church family and friends and to attend card parties with her dear friends, M.L. (Skeeter), Sister Vern, Aunt Maggie, Aunt Carol, and Rev. Lewis. She also enjoyed gardening and cooking for her church. She loved to watch “Golden Girls”, Steve Harvey shows and loved Lifetime channel. She enjoyed the blues and gospel music, especially Ranch Allen and Lou Rawls. Dorothy’s love for her family was rivaled only by her love and belief in God. It was seen in her interactions with others and her time spent in the Word, knowing Him and seeking first, His glory.

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda (John) Jenkins of Burlington, Joyce Aron of Iowa City, and Cheryl McMillan of Iowa City; four sons, Sidney (Chris) Swayzer of Burlington, Allen (Andrea) Swayzer of Burlington, Bobby (Karen Schaffer) Cratton of Dubuque, IA, and Ricky (Leslie) Cratton of Burlington; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Paige of Battle Creek, MI; one brother, Eugene Ferrell Jr. of Michigan City, ID; and special daughter, Juanita Brown of Burlington.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her step-mom, Big Momma Willie Mae Swayzer; one daughter, Kay Swayzer; one granddaughter, Brittney Redd; two sisters, Liz and MaryAnn; two brothers Odell and LeRoy; and best friend, Linda Harris.

Mr. John Arnold Gasser, 76, of Burlington, died at 12:36 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born on October 25, 1941 in Dexter, MO, he was the son of Oscar and Opal Gasser. He married Mary Ann Kneedy on December 10, 1963 in Bettendorf, IA. She preceded him in death on August 22, 2010.

John graduated from Louisville High School in Louisville, KY. He worked at Alcoa for 38 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He also belonged to Knights of Columbus and was a Union member. He enjoyed watching television, riding his golf cart, grilling, family cruises and dearly loved his wife of 46 years, Mary Ann.

Survivors include two daughters, Amy (Douglas) Beavers of Burlington, IA and Christine Bichler of Kaukauna, WI; two sons, Michael (Ellen) Gasser of La Harpe, IL and Ed (Amy) Gasser of Fishers, IN; eight grandchildren, Warren Snook, Hannah Snook, Emily Beavers, Courtney Janotta, Justin Bichler, Jarrod Bichler, James Gasser and Kathryn Gasser; his mother, Opal Gasser of Memphis, TN; sister Anita (James) Richardson of Memphis, TN and brother David Gasser of TX.

He was preceded in death by his father, wife, son Stephen and a brother.

Mr. John L. “Jack” Voyles, 83, of New London, died Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington. Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Vera Kathryn Fedler, 91, of Burlington, died at 4:25 am Friday, September 7, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 21, 1926, in Montrose, IA, she was the daughter of Charles Grover and Cecelia Cathryn Slattery Brown. On September 10, 1949, she married Leroy James Fedler in Ft. Madison, IA.

Vera worked at Schramms for 27 years and for Schaeffer Pen for 18 years.

She graduated from Montrose High School.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. In her free time, Vera enjoying playing golf and cards. She loved to dance.

Survivors include her husband, Leroy James Fedler of Burlington, one son, Jon William Fedler of Lexington, MO, daughter, Kathy Fedler (Timothy) Moorman of Mead, CO, and two grandsons, Zachary and Nicholas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Junior Brown; and two sisters, Marjorie Brown, and Dorothy Pezley.

Nadine Walker, 94, of Burlington, died at 1:25 PM Sunday, September 9, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born May 13, 1924, in Chadwick, MO, she was the daughter of Walter Robert and Cora Elizabeth McNiel Calvin. On August 4, 1943, she married Harold Burdette Walker in Danville.

Nadine was a homemaker.

She was of Christian faith and was a member of Long Creek Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with her husband and family.

Survivors include her husband, Harold of Burlington; son, Ronald Lynn (Sharon) Walker of Florida; daughter, Sherry Kay (Ervin) Imm of North Liberty; brother, Jerry Gene Calvin of St. Augustine, FL; two sisters, Jean DiBoye and Velda Darbyshire of Sedalia, MO; three grandchildren: Jackie, Wendy, and Maria (Matt); and three great-grandchildren: Anna, Kate, and Nolan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Sonny, Jr., Ralph, Ted, and Armand; four sisters, Chloe, Edna, Dorothy, and Norma Geraldine.

Wesley Harold Cross, 91, of Burlington, died at 10:55 am Saturday, September 15, 2018, at the Burlington Care Center.

Born July 25, 1927, in Iron Mountain, WI, he was the son of William and LaVena Moyers Cross.

Wesley was the owner of Cross Construction. He built many, many homes in Burlington. When he retired from carpentry, he opened Country Junque Store, and later sold antiques all over the nation.

He was of the Christian Faith. He founded and was the president of Burlington Coin Club and Burlington Singles Club. He enjoyed fishing, stamp collecting, coin collecting but most of all, Wesley loved reading and antiques. He collected books and was an avid reader; he loved to learn. Wesley loved reading his bible and studying scripture. He enjoyed going to auctions, restoring antiques and hauling them all over the country. He loved sharing stories about going to Europe with his children.

Survivors include his daughters, Peggy A. (Earl) Stott of Burlington, Dorothy (Hosea) Winters of Burlington, son, Dennis (Theresa) Cross of Bowen, IL, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, one brother, William (Dorothy) Cross of Florida and one sister-in-law, Leona Cross of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Rodney; two sisters, Eveline Johnson and Waneta Cline; four brothers, Charles Cross, Chester Cross, Walter Cross and Lloyd Cross; and one great-grandchild, Makynna Stott.

Janet H. Smith, 84, of Burlington passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at her home, after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Born December 11, 1933 in West Liberty, Iowa, she was the daughter of Dr. Edward E. and Naomi (Musser) Hale. She married Dr. Gary Smith on September 18, 1955 in West Liberty. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1996.

Janet graduated from West Liberty High School in 1951 and from the University of Iowa in 1955 with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She worked as a nursing supervisor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics until her retirement in 1964.

She was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of Lotus Chapter O.E.S. of West Liberty, a lifetime Girl Scout and belonged to the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Her many hobbies included traveling, entertaining, golfing, bowling, and in her younger years, playing 6 on 6 basketball. She had a passion for sea turtle rescues, and above all loved taking care of her family.

Survivors include son Craig (Julie) Smith and grandchildren, Adam, Hannah, Samantha, and Josh of Burlington; son Brian (Renee) Smith and granddaughter Ruthie of Burlington; daughter Dr. Suzanne (Christopher) Bradbury and grandchildren Regan, Lance, and Lucas of San Diego, CA; sister Mae (Robert) Collins of Ft. Myers, FL; and brother Dr. James Hale of Boonville, AR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Michele Smith, sister, Ruth Skelley and brother, Edward Hale.

The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 20th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. David Bracht-Wagner will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Virginia Marie Knopp, 97, of Burlington, died at 5:18 PM Sunday, September 16, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born February 4, 1921, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry Ferdinand and Marie Winifred Patch Burk. On December 9, 1945, she married Paul Edward in Aledo, Illinois.

She worked as a secretary for the planning and zoning board of West Burlington and the Hawkeye.

She was a Burlington High School graduate and a graduate of Woodruff Business College.

Virginia was a member of First United Church of Christ. She was an Elder at the Church and on the Consistory, as well as, a member of AARP, Ruth Circle, 4-H, a Boy Scout assistant leader, Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and was treasurer of Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed reading, eating chocolate and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Craig E. (Claudia) Knopp of Murrieta, CA; one daughter, Beth E. (Mike) Wiley of Lomax, IL; five grandchildren: Ryan (Caroline) Jones of Danville, Zachary (Molly) Weyrick of Wasraw,IL, Curtis (Brooke) Knopp of California, Carrie (Bill) Klain of Arizona, Cameron Knopp of California; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and special friends Terry and George VanHagen.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one granddaughter.

As per Virginia’s request, she has donated her body to The University of Iowa Hospital for research.

A memorial service will be held for Virginia at a later date and a Graveside Committal Service will be at Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Linda J. “Lynn” Huss, 67, of Gladstone, Illinois died September 15, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Born July 4, 1951 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Stanley and Celine (Powell) Fisher. She married Charles J. Huss on June 19, 1970 in Burlington, Iowa.

Lynn was a production operator for I.A.A.P. for 20 years. She retired in 2003. She also worked at the Burlington Basket Factory, and was a part-time janitor at West Central Middle School. She was a graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School.

In 1967 she helped organize the Burlington Ski Kats. She was show coordinator for 4 years and served as queen twice at Kenny’s Roller Ranch. She competed for Fort Madison Rodeo Queen in 1969. She was in the choir at St. Paul Catholic School for 8 years and was excellent in track at Burlington Notre Dame. She received many awards in water skiing (jump, trick and slalom). She was a member of Iowa National Barrel Horse Association District 5 and an extensive award winner at horse shows such as Lomax Saddle Club and Des Moines Saddle Club just to name a few.

She is survived by her husband Charles Huss of Gladstone, Illinois; two daughters, Dawn (Mike) Akers and Amy (Brian) Bole both of Gladstone, Illinois; two sisters, Pat (Mike) Clawson of Pell Lake, Wisconsin and Nancy (Dan) Dvorsky of Rio Rancho, NM; three granddaughters, Brooke (Dustin Vancil) Akers, Brianna Akers and Nikki Bole and one grandson Justin Bole.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20th at Lunning Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following visitation.

Reception to follow at Gladstone Community Building in Gladstone, IL.

Mary Cheryl “Tootie” Rittler, 81, of Burlington, died at 4:45 PM Monday, September 17, 2018, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born December 7, 1936, in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of Alvin M. and Mary Virginia Stuck Rittler.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.

Survivors include one sister, Donna R. Pence of Burlington; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Richard Rittler.

The Graveside Committal Service for Miss Rittler will be 1:00 PM Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with her cousin Rev. Father Michael T. Phillips officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington area Catholic Schools.

Lawrence J. “Larry” Lepic, 97, of West Burlington, previously from Bellingham, Washington and New London, Iowa, died at 2:32 AM Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born December 19, 1920 in rural Mauston, Wisconsin, he was the son of James V. Lepic and Lillian Slauf Lepic. He graduated from Lane Technical High School, Chicago, Illinois in 1938.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Chanute Field, Illinois in 1939, where he completed technical courses as an Aircraft Machinist and Aircraft and Engine Mechanic. His next duty assignment was as an Aircraft Crew Chief on Curtis P-36 and P-40 aircraft at Wheeler Field, Hawaii in the famous 18th Pursuit Group. Later, in 1941, he was transferred to the Hawaiian Air Depot, at Hickam Field, to assemble aircraft engines. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and participated in the Battle of Midway. Upon returning to the Mainland, he married Mary Helen Ward in Chicago, Illinois on January 2, 1943.

Mr. Lepic entered the Flying Cadet Training program in June, 1943 and studied in the College Training Detachment at the University of Syracuse, New York. Cadet Colonel Lepic was commissioned 2nd Lt. and received his multi-engine pilot wings in April, 1945. His first assignment was as an Aircraft Engineering Officer at Lincoln AAFB, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lt. Lepic separated from the US Air Force in 1947 and Managed Victoria Novelties, Inc. in Victoria, Texas. He was recalled to active duty in 1951, where he instructed pilots in B-25s. In 1953 he transitioned into B-29s as Aircraft Commander and flew bombing sorties over Korea.

During the Cold War he flew B-47s and finally completed his military service flying B-52s and Evaluating Combat Ready Crews. Major Lepic retired after 25 years of very trying, but exciting service for his country.

His next endeavor was Director of Aviation for the Bellingham International Airport, Bellingham, Washington retiring in 1981, with the dedication of the new terminal building.

He owned a series of airplanes with the last one being his favorite, a new 1976 Mooney. He enjoyed salmon fishing, playing golf in the summer and skiing in the winter. In the meantime he and his wife traveled all over the world. His contributions to the community were many, including serving in Officer’s chairs to include 15th District Commander of Washington State, Veteran of Foreign Wars. In 1972 he served as President of the Washington Airport.

Beginning in 1982 he and his wife spent their winters in Arizona, where they attended numerous dances, cultural functions and continued in the aviation field as President of the Apache Junction, Arizona Airport Commission. His family’s genealogical research included 639 relatives. He lost his wife of 55 years in 1996, from a battle with cancer. He was fortunate to remarry L. Marjorie Scovern on June 28, 1997 in Yarmouth, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Scovern-Lepic of West Burlington; one son, Kenneth Lepic of Bellevue, WA; two stepchildren, Marilee (James) Byczek, and Robert (Bobbie) Scovern; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, James, Lester and Ervin and his first wife, Helen.

Larry wishes to express his love and gratitude to his Iowa family and friends for their outstanding support and caring. He thanks the Southeast Iowa Community for the World War II Tour to Washington, DC.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM, Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home

The funeral service for Mr. Lepic will be 3:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Kathleen Thomas officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Offutt Air Force Base. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

Memorials have been established for the Shriner’s Children’s Fund and Burlington Public Library.

James Pritchard Sheagren, 93, of Burlington, died at 7:59 PM Friday, September 21, 2018, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born January 9, 1925 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Carl Harry and Elsie Lee Pritchard Sheagren. On September 12, 1948, he married Vera Louise Lauck in Indianola, Iowa.

Jim was a licensed funeral director and owner of Sheagren Funeral Home. He ran the funeral home with his son, Roger.

He was a graduate of Burlington High School and the St. Louis School of Mortuary Science.

He was the oldest member of the Grace United Methodist Church where he was active with their men’s club and Homebuilders Sunday school class. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association for 71 years, the Grotto Shrine, the Des Moines Lodge #1, a lifetime member of the Des Moines County Historical Society, a Chamber of Commerce ambassador, Burlington Lion’s Club, Chairperson of the Burlington Sesquicentennial celebration, 33rd Degree Mason, past Worthy Patron of E.C. Blackmar Chapter 306 and Des Moines County T.B. He was a Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader and belonged to Romeo “retired old men eating out.”

Jim was a very social person. He loved going out in the mornings for coffee and donuts with friends. He was a faithful friend, keeping everyone connected. He belonged to several bridge clubs, was very knowledgeable of Burlington history, and was proud of his Swedish heritage. Jim loved sweets, especially pie. He loved decorating for the holidays and attending auctions on Saturday mornings.

Survivors include three sons, Craig (Cathy) Sheagren of Monmouth, IL, Joel (Kim) Sheagren of Blaine, MN, Roger (Lynn) Sheagren of Burlington; 10 grandchildren, Carie (Tyson) Geertz of Whispering Pines, NC, Stephanie (John) Marron of Rolling Prairie, IN, Ben (Jennifer) Sheagren of Chicago, IL, Michael (Sarah) Sheagren of Evansville, IN, Andy Sheagren of Chicago, IL, Samuel Sheagren, Mathea Sheagren both of Blaine, MN, Connor Sheagren of Anchorage, AK, Eric Sheagren of New York, NY, Adam Sheagren of Iowa City, IA; and 10 great grandchildren, Danny, Robin, Laura, Becky, Abbey, Jacob, Lonnie, Gus, Tad, and Thomas.

Besides his wife, Vera, he was preceded in death by his parents and one infant daughter, Cathie Lee Sheagren.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with Masonic Rites to be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Sheagren will be 10:00 AM Thursday, September 27, 2018, at Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend David Bracht-Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Grace United Methodist Church following the burial.

Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Historical Society and Grace United Methodist Church.

Dolly Evelyn Phillips, 83, of West Burlington, died at 11:15 AM Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born April 28, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William and Edith Baker Burtalo. On September 11, 1950, she married Walter Edward Phillips in Lincoln, IL. He died May 7, 2007.

She enjoyed gardening, and her favorite flowers are Philodendrons. She loved to cook and solve crossword puzzles. Dolly had a love for all animals, but her favorites were horses and dogs.

Survivors include two sons, Larry O Phillips, Donald E Phillips of Cherokee, IA; three daughters, Terry L Phillips, Linda S Milton, Judy L Vancil all of Burlington, 16 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one son Walter, three brothers, William, Edward, and Ruben Burtalo, two sisters, Mary Devine and Virginia Marsh, and one infant sister.

Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM with the family to receive friends Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Carl W. Kalkbrenner, 84, of West Burlington, died 10:54 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2018 at his home.

Born December 21, 1933 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Carl A. and Auguste (Mangl) Kalkbrenner. He married Doris M. Hingst on December 30, 1956 at First United Church of Christ in Burlington.

Carl went to school in West Burlington to the 8th grade and graduated from BHS in 1951. He attended Burlington Junior College. He worked a short time at I.O.P. before being drafted into the Army in 1954. Carl completed Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood and Camp Chafee. He was stationed in Japan, Germany, and Korea during the Korean Conflict as SGT before coming home in 1962. He served a total of 7 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Carl was a testing Engineer for J.I. Case proving grounds for 31 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, West Burlington. He was a member of the VFW, NRA, past member of Ducks Unlimited.

Carl & Chet Mason helped get the first swimming pool in West Burlington. He got equipment to build the W.B. track. He served on the church council and help get the first girls little league softball in W.B. Carl built their first home in West Burlington in 1962. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and their cabin on Fetters Island.

Survivors include his wife Doris M. Kalkbrenner of West Burlington; daughter, Lisa (Ron Pforts) Kalkbrenner of West Burlington; son, David (Lisa) Kalkbrenner of Winfield; two step grandchildren, Bailey and Forest Hesseltine; two sisters, Ingeborg Zaiser & Rosemary Scarff of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.

The funeral service for Mr. Kalkbrenner will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 25th at Lunning Chapel. Pastor JudyAnn Morse will officiate. The inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery with Military rites by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

A memorial has been established for St. Paul United Church of Christ and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
