Jose Faire Viterbo, 70, of West Burlington, died at 12:34 PM Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Great River Hospice House.

Born July 20, 1948, in Cagayan, Philippines, he was the son of Mercy Faire. On November 21, 1999, he married Aileen Red in Las Vegas, NV.

He worked for more than10 years as a pharmacy tech for Skye Pharma.

He enjoyed singing, watching movies on Netflix, cleaning his car and connecting on Facebook.

Survivors include his wife, Aileen of West Burlington; two sons, Jlen Viterbo of West Burlington and Bengie Viterbo of the Philippines; three daughters, Christy Viterbo Llorca and Theresa Viterbo both of San Diego, CA, and Victoria Viterbo of the Philippines; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

There will be no formal visitation or service. Burial will take place at a later date in the Philippines.

Karen Louise Hedges, age 78, of rural Oakville, died Monday morning, September 24, 2018, at her home. The daughter of Verner and Violet Gustafson Amenell, she was born on January 22, 1940 in Burlington. She married Sandy Hedges on June 10, 1962 in Mediapolis.

Karen graduated from Huron High School in 1958 and from the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing. After spending two years with Sandy in the Army they returned to the farm and started their family.

She loved to entertain in her home and hosted many gatherings of various clubs and friends. She hosted three foreign exchange students along with many relatives and friends from Sweden. Karen and Sandy took many trips to Sweden, Norway, and Denmark to visit her friends and make new ones.

Karen was a lifetime member and very active in the Mediapolis Immanuel Lutheran Church. The church was the cornerstone of her life. She was also a long-time member of the Huron area Golden Hour Study Club.

Her family includes her husband, Sandy; three sons, Steve & Dina Hedges of Guttenberg, Jeff & Kim Hedges of Oakville, and Dave & Angie Hedges of Mediapolis; six granddaughters; two step grandsons; a brother, Dick Amenell of Spokane, Washington; and a sister, Pauline Jarrard of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Judy Thomas.

The funeral ceremony for Karen Hedges will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis with Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating. Burial will follow at the Hawkeye Cemetery rural Oakville.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Memorial gifts will benefit Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Phillip Thomas “Tom” Anhalt, 72, of Burlington, died at 5:15 PM Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born January 22, 1946, in Burlington, he was the son of Phillip T. and Jean Edna Bischoff Anhalt. On August 30, 1968, he married Alice Clifford in Knoxville, IL. Together, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

He worked for Murray Iron Works as a draftsman.

He was of Presbyterian faith. He enjoyed cars, boats and motorcycles. He could fix anything. In 2014, he took a cross-country car tour with his son in a 1970 Ford Mustang. Tom was proud of his four granddaughters, and was so excited to meet his expected grandchild.

Survivors include his wife, of Burlington; one son, Tad (Jen) Anhalt of Earlham, IA; one daughter, Jenel Ransford of Burlington; and four granddaughters: Cora, Audrey, Ruby and Evelyn. One grandson (the expected one) Michael Thomas Anhalt born September 24, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM with military rites at 6:00 pm followed by a short celebration of life service with food and fellowship to follow in the Prugh-Thielen Community.

Memorials have been established for the Blackhawk Auto Restorers Club and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Larry Dale Jacoba, 81, of Yarmouth, died Friday, September 28, 2018 at his home.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Prairie Grove, West Burlington with Rev. Kathleen Wohlers officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday at Elliott Chapel with the family present from 5 – 7 PM. A memorial has been established.

Richard Ray “Rich” O’Neill, 55, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, September 28, 2018 at his home.

The funeral service for Rich O’Neill will be 10:00 Saturday at Elliott Chapel. According to his wishes his body will be cremated following the services and inurnment will be at a later date. Visitation will begin at noon Friday with the family present to greet friends from 5 – 7 PM. A memorial has been established for FFA Chapter, Mt. Pleasant. Clinton A. Walker, 66, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of New London, died
Monday, October 1, 2018 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.

October Louise Reed, 103, of Burlington, formerly of Davenport, died at 12:23 AM Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born October 1, 1915, in Montrose, IA, she was the daughter of David and Myrtle Dresser Wardlow. On November, 23, 1935, she married Lloyd Elmer Reed in Montrose. He passed on January 28, 1992.

October was a homemaker.

She was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Survivors include four daughters, Marcine Jones of Burlington, Sandra Bak of Burlington, Linda (William) Selby of Burlington, Susan Reed of Bettendorf, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Richard Reed, two sisters and one brother.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

There will be no visitation or services.

Clinton A. Walker, 66, Mt. Pleasant, formerly New London, died Monday, October 1, 2018 at Great River Hospice House.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 October 11 at Elliott Chapel with Pastor Kathleen Moore officiating. According to his wishes his body has been cremated. Judy Arledge Jacobs, 78, of Burlington, died at 9:00 AM Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation.

Born August 15, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Arnold G and Frances Clair Moorman Arledge. On August 27, 1960, she married James Andrew in Burlington, Iowa. Then on March 17, 1995, she married James Andrew again.

Judy was an excellent artist, mostly oil paintings. She enjoyed fishing and riding horses, “she was practically born on a horse.” Judy loved the stock market, golfing and playing cards. Judy liked designing and was the interior designer for her family members homes. She also loved landscaping and even owned a landscaping company, J-Mar Gardens.

Survivors include her husband, James Andrew Jacobs of Burlington; one son, Jeffrey A (Nancy) Jacobs of Sperry, IA; one step-daughter, Sarah Jacobs of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren James, Jessica, and Josie; two brothers, John (Judy) Arledge of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Jim Arledge of Granbury, TX; several nieces and nephews; and her favorite dog Mack.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one step-son, Benjamin Jacobs, one sister, JoAnn Fleming.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 PM Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Jacobs will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Wally Reynolds officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Ruth Marie Kuepper, 97, of Burlington, died 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born August 23, 1921 in Cadillac, Michigan she was the daughter of Roy E. and Mildred (LaVeine) Watson. She was a 1939 graduate of Cadillac High School and a 1943 graduate of Mercy Hospital Nursing School in Burlington. She married Henry P. Kuepper on October 25, 1944 in Avon Park, Florida. He died May 14, 1990.

Ruth was a registered nurse. She worked in the surgery department at Mercy Hospital and Burlington Medical Center. She retired from Burlington Surgeons Inc. in 1989. After her retirement she returned to work for J.I. Case for 10 more years.

Ruth was a baseball fanatic! She loved watching the Chicago White Sox and Notre Dame football. She enjoyed reading and completing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her four children; Christine M. (David) Swaim of Cherry Valley, Illinois, Phillip (Mike) Kuepper of Connecticut, Jane (Tim Gardin) Kuepper of Burlington and Amy (Ed) Schulte of Muscatine; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.

The Celebration of Life for Mrs. Kuepper will be 1p.m. Wednesday, October 10th at Messiah Lutheran Church. Rev. Susanne Smith will officiate. According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Loris Ellen “Susie” Meeker, age 90, of Burlington, died Friday, October 5, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

The daughter of Charles Herman and Margaret Helda Bohlen Schulte, she was born on October 10, 1927, in Peoria, IL. She married Clyde Edwin Meeker on June 10, 1950 in Easton, Illinois.

She graduated from Sherman Valley High School in Easton, IL in 1945. She attended Normal University, received a teaching degree and taught school two years in Easton. Her husband farmed near Manito, IL and in 1959, they moved to Oakville, IA. In 1993, they moved to Mediapolis.

Susie was a devoted wife and mother, an avid reader, and enjoyed embroidery. She was a member of Kingston United Methodist Church.

She is survived by four sons, Kenneth Meeker of Mt. Carroll, IL; Charles Meeker of St. Charles, MO; Richard (Carol) Meeker; and Randy (Christina) Meeker both of Burlington; one daughter, Claudia (John) Schweizer of Ft. Collins, CO; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman Schulte of Williamsville, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; her parents; a brother; two sisters; and three sons, Scott, William and Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Monday, October 8, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Loris “Susie” Meeker will be 11:00 AM, Monday, October 8, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Zeleny officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery at a later date. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service.

Donald Paul “Butch” Kobs, 85, of Danville, died Friday, October 5, 2018 in West Point.

Peggy Lynn Pullins, age 57, of Stronghurst, IL, passed away Friday October 5, 2018 at her home. She was born February 17, 1961 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of Donald and Rosada Jane Feikert Carnes. On November 2, 1993, she married Daniel Lynn Swisher. They later divorced. On May 19, 2007, she married James G. Pullins. He preceded her in death on May 2, 2018.

Peggy was a 1979 graduate of Southern High School in Stronghurst. Following high school, she worked at Methode Electronics in Carthage, IL for several years. After Methode closed, she attended Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, IA, where she earned her Associate Degree. She currently worked as a Title I Associate for West Central School #235 North Campus in Biggsville. In her spare time, Peggy enjoyed visiting her son, Zach, cooking, gardening, caring for her cats, and doing anything outdoors. She was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Zachary Swisher, of Chatham, IL, one brother, Donald (Carla) Carnes of Media, IL, three sisters, Donna (Terry) Painter and Treasa Pence, both of Stronghurst, and Bonnie Jo Carnes, of Chapel Hill, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James Pullins, ex-husband, Daniel Swisher, and one brother, James Edward Carnes.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday October 9, 2018 at Banks & Beals, with Steve Minkler officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst Cemetery. Vincent Marlow “Vince” Seaver, 47, of Hamilton, IL, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 near Donnellson, IA.

Vince was born on September 23, 1971 in Keokuk, IA, the son of William Joe and Mary Jo Bollin Seaver.

He was a 1990 graduate of the Nauvoo-Colusa High School. Following high school Vince attended Vatterott College. He was currently employed by Paperpak where he worked as a Maintenance Supervisor. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Keokuk Art Center. Mr. Seaver enjoyed photography and displayed his photography in several shows, riding four wheelers, NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt Jr., the Denver Broncos, traveling and especially traveling to Colorado to see his brother, Lucas, and sister-in-law, Julie.

Survivors include his parents, William Joe and Mary Jo Seaver of Nauvoo, fiancé, Jean Starr of Hamilton, two brothers, Joseph (Michelle) Seaver of Montrose, IA and Lucas (Julie) Seaver of Black Hawk, CO and one niece, Emily Leann. Vince is also survived by “his girls” – Golden Reteivers, Ella and Holly.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Nauvoo with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Hamilton, IL. Karen Edna Burdette, 68, of Burlington, died Friday, October 5, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Born October 19, 1949 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, she was the daughter of John and Edna Burdette. She was engaged to Tom Mosena and previously married to Bob Hand.

She attended Ft. Madison schools. In 1999 Karen retired from being a hairstylist and childcare provider. She was a homemaker who created a loving home for her children all her life. Karen was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed spending time with the ones she loved, especially her children. The sunshine of her life were her grandbabies. A golden blessing arrived in her last year when she became engaged to her fiancé, Tom. Celebrating joyful times with her loved ones, particularly Christmas, made her happy. Listening to music was a favorite pastime. Everyone knew Elvis was her favorite.

Survivors include fiancé Tom Mosena of Burlington, IA; five children, Bruce (Stacey) Yurth of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Tami (John) Gaines of Burlington, IA, John (Jenny Wiegard) Hand-Hanson of Burlington, IA, Rob Hand of West Burlington, IA and Joni (Dustan) Fenton of Burlington, IA; seventeen grandchildren; two brothers, Steven (Paula) Burdette of Ft. Madison, IA and Jim (Rosie) Burdette of Wever, IA; and one sister, Debra (Dale) Nelson of Oskaloosa, IA.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and husband, Bob Hand.

The funeral service for Ms. Burdette will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October, 11, 2018 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Scott Collier will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 10th at Lunning Chapel.

Randy Longcor, 61, of West Burlington, died October 7, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born March 30, 1957 in Oelwein, Iowa he was the son of Oliver Bertrum and Bonnie Darlene (Savage) Longcor. He married Debbie Tapscott on November 8, 1978 in Burlington.

Randy was the Branch Operations Manager for Univar USA for 38 years.

The most important things in Randy’s life were his family and friends. He loved watching and going to the movies with his grandchildren and enjoying popcorn. He loved grilling, dancing and singing karaoke. He was an amazing man, brother, husband, dad and grandpa.

Survivors include his wife Debbie Longcor of West Burlington; five children; Angie (Zach) Bowman of Burlington, Jamie Longcor of Rock Island, IL, Rhonda (Justin) Huntington and Tory Johnson (Toby Kindig) both of Burlington and Crystal (Nick) Overton of Liberty, MO; step daughter Amanda Lee of Arizona; 15 grandchildren, two great grandchildren with one on the way; two sisters, Linda Harryman of Burlington and Shelley (Larry) Stattler of Russellville, AR; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Kenny Harryman.

The Celebration of Life for Randy will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 12th at Lunning Chapel. A special friend of the family, Kathy Mashburn will be assisting with the service. Interment will be held in Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois. Visitation will be 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 11th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Merkel Cell Carcinoma Research.

Alice Mae Harris, 74, of Burlington, passed away at 8:10 PM Saturday, October 6, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born August 27, 1944, in Gary, IN, to Edward and Margaret Roberts. She was the second of six siblings. She met her future husband, Max Harris, in Chicago at an Arthur Murray dance exhibition. They wed in 1965, and she relocated to Burlington. She worked for the Hawkeye newspaper for many years before retiring. She was a talented artist and loved gardening.

Survivors include three brothers, Edward Roberts Jr. of Hebron, IN, James Roberts of Penargyl, PA, Henry Roberts of Burlington; one sister, Linda Lyon of Portage, IN; many nieces and nephews, and her dearest friend, Jim Letts of Burlington.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Edward and Margaret, her brother George and her husband, Max.

The Graveside Committal Service for Alice will be 10:00 am Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.

Donations can be made in her name to Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

Terry D. Kilbourn, 87 of New London, died Wednesday, October 10, at the
Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.  Services are pending at
Elliott Chapel, New London.

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Snyder, 91, of rural Burnside, IL died at 5:25 AM Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at her home.

She was born February 10, 1927 in Cuba, IL, the daughter of Chester Arthur and Adah Frances Haigh Bartlett. On March 15, 1943 she married Glenn LeRoy Snyder in Rushville, IL. He preceded her in death on October 19, 1991.

Dorothy attended school in Colchester, IL. She and her husband farmed near Burnside for many years. In 1981 they established Quality Machine Quilting and to date over 11,000 quilts have been stitched. She and her family traveled extensively in this country and in Holland, Brussels and France. She and her husband often portrayed Santa and Mrs. Clause at area nursing homes, schools and parades. She enjoyed cooking, baking pies and especially cherished times with her family.

She is survived by eleven children, Beverly Stephen) Brunk of Denmark, IA, Barbara (Edward) Burford of Warsaw, IL, Betty (Rene) Medina of West Point, IA, Becky (Larry) Flowers of West Burlington, IA, Chester (Joyce) Snyder of Colusa, IL, Billie Jo (David) Mosher of Fort Madison, IA, Bonnie (Gene) Willdrick of rural Dallas City, IL, Brenda Womack of Fort Madison, IA, Dale Snyder of rural Burnside, IL, Bea (Alan) Huls of Wataga, IL and Glenn (Terry) Snyder, Jr. of Buffalo, MN, 32 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Patricia Faye Knapp of Visalia, CA.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, one brother, three sisters, two grandsons, Kevin Snyder and Aaron Huls, one great-granddaughter, Mikhaila Palmer and one great-grandson, Matthew Brookhiser.

Services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Nancy Love officiating. Burial will be in the Harris Cemetery, near Dallas City. Craig “Squeak” Strawhacker, 66, of West Burlington, formerly of Oakville, IA, died at 1:26 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2018 at the Great River Hospice house in West Burlington, IA.

Born April 29, 1952 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Donald David and Doris Ann (Hartman) Strawhacker. He married Carol Ann Johnson on December 26, 1970 at Oakville Methodist Church.

Craig graduated from Wapello High School in 1970. He worked as a welder at J.I. Case Co. for many years until his retirement in 2010.

He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the UAW Local # 807. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, baseball, football, Nascar, drag racing, funny cars and playing in the Men’s softball league for Brown’s Oil. He also enjoyed watching T.V. among his favorites were James Bond movies, Bonanza, and Matlock. He enjoyed watching Jonah and Cameron in sports, even soccer.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years Carol; son Chris (Jill) Strawhacker of Ames, IA, their children Jonah and Cameron; son Curt Strawhacker of West Burlington; and sister, Brenda Strawhacker of Dothan, AL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, half-sister Linda Reiman Wiley, half-brother Wendell Reiman and many four legged furry companions.

Lillian Iona Sorenson, 101, of Burlington, died at 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Wapello Specialty Care.

Born March 2, 1917 in Missouri Valley, IA, she was the daughter of Arthur and Gertrude Ochampaugh. She married Lloyd Sorenson on July 13, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 3, 1985.

After high school Lillian attained her degree from Teacher’s College in Gunnison, CO. She worked as a teacher until her marriage to Lloyd. She was then a homemaker until her husband’s passing, when she worked in retail at Schramm’s in the seamstress area.

Lillian enjoyed her rose garden. At Christmas time she was always excited to see her family’s excitement at the lighted and musical Christmas cards she gave them.

Survivors include a son, Larry Sorenson and a daughter, Linda Sorenson, both of Burlington, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother Floyd, and four sisters Helen, Dorothy, Grace, and Beatrice.

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Sorenson will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 19th at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Lunning Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

E. Eugene Smith, 88, formerly of Middletown died 11:18 p.m. October 12, 2018 at Great River Medical Center.

Born July 14, 1930 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Elmont Sylvester and Gladys Marie (Marlette) Smith. On September 16, 1951 he married Wanda Strahn in Keokuk, Iowa.

Eugene was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a veteran of the Iowa Army National Guard serving in the Red Horse Division from 1947 until 1968.

He started working at the West Burlington Railroad shops for C.B. & Q Railroad in 1949 at the age of 19. After his retirement from the railroad he began working for Broeg Heating and Air for 14 additional years. After retiring from Broeg Heating and Air conditioning business he went into his own business remodeling homes.

He managed little league baseball in Middletown and worked with the Cub Scouts for several years. He was a member of First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ and was very active with the church serving as deacon, working with the world outreach, membership committee and served as Chairman of the Trustees.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Sq-N-Aders and Circle B Prominaders Square Dance Clubs. He enjoyed bowling, square dancing, camping, reminiscing with his sisters about life on the farm, woodworking and spending time with his family whom he loved very much.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Smith of Burlington; five sons, David (Laura) Smith of Bedford, TX, Gary (Kay) Smith of New London, IA, Steven (Shari) Smith of West Burlington, Mark Smith and Bradley Smith both of Burlington; one daughter, Lyn Phillips of EauClair, WI; one sister, Elaine (Ronnie) Cooper of Kahoka, MO; 17 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Wanda Hollenbeck and Gloria Polen.

The graveside memorial funeral service and inurnment for Mr. Smith will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 19th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Rev. David Yonker will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites.

Sherry Lynn Wade, 70, of Burlington, died at 1:00 PM Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the her home.

Born August 12, 1948, in Moline, IL, she was the daughter of Francis M. and Bernie Tilton Strahn. On November 21, 1984, she married Donald Eugene in Burlington. He died on November 1, 2011.

Sherry enjoyed crocheting, crafts, sewing, operating her own t-shirt press and designing images for shirts, aprons, bags and other creative ideas she had. She also enjoyed reading and was a huge Stephen King fan.

Survivors include her son, Eddie L. Wade of Burlington; two sisters, Stephanie Dingman of Burlington and Lois Hedges of Port St. Lucie, FL; three nieces, Mindy (Arron) Doane, Becky Douglas, and Michelle Dingman all of Burlington; one nephew, Brian (April) Wade of Burlington; two great-nieces, Amber Douglas of Des Moines and Autumn (Taylor) Grafton of Carman, IL; three great-nephews, Michael Douglas of Burlington, Kristofer (Megan) Walters of Burlington and Zach (Gabby) Harris of Kansas City, KS; and many other extended family members.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Wade will be 10:00 AM Monday, October 22, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Eleanor R. Denning, 108, of Donnellson, died at 2:04 PM, Sunday, October 21, 2018 in Donnellson.

Born November 5, 1909, in Franklin Township, Des Moines County, she was the daughter of John and Mathilda (Westerbeck) Schilb. On June 1, 1944, she married Conrad “Coonie” Paul Denning in Washington, DC. He died November 5, 1999.

Following her education, Eleanor was self-employed as a beautician at many locations. She later became a Wave in the Military. For most of Eleanor’s life, she owned and operated a century farm with her husband.

Eleanor and Coonie donated 200 acres to the State of Iowa for the Denning Conservation Area. In 2001, after the passing of her husband, she added a playground in her name at the conservation site.

Survivors include six nieces and two nephews.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers and 6 sisters.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Friday, October 26, 2018 at Peace Lutheran Church, 13646 Beaverdale Rd, West Burlington, Iowa .

Carroll J. “CJ’ Kentch, 56, of Dallas City, IL, passed away Friday, October 19, 2018 at her home.

CJ was born February 21, 1962 in Burlington, IA, the daughter of Edward Eugene and Dorothy Ruschill Kentch. She married Gary Rea, they later divorced.

She was a 1980 graduate of the Nauvoo-Colusa High School where she played basketball and softball. CJ enjoyed gardening, cooking, spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter, Jaylyn. She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. She looked forward to going to and camping at the Tri-State Rodeo every year. She had been employed at Hagy’s Bar in Dallas City.

Survivors include, one son, Blake Rea (Tammie Poole) of Dallas City, granddaughter Jaylyn Rea, one step-grandson, Quinton Poole, mother, Dorothy Henson and her friend and companion, Stan Markham, of Dallas City, two sisters, Carla Kentch of Dallas City and Christi (Roger) Kentch Newbanks of Niota, IL, two nephews, Billy Dewein and Clark Rutledge, two nieces, Rashei (Will) Stuekerjuergen and Curstin Rutledge and two great-nephews, Christian Stuekerjuergen and Chace Loveall.

She was preceded in death by her father, one brother Curtis Kentch, step-father, Daniel C. Henson and a great-nephew, Dante Stuekerjuergen.

Mary Frances Lehman, 85, of Burlington, died at 3:50 PM Sunday, October 21, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born October 2, 1933, in Agency, IA, she was the daughter of Oscar and Florence (Nordgren) Rill. On August 25, 1956, she married George William Lehman in Agency, Iowa.

Mary worked in food service in the Burlington School System for 20 years and IAAP in payroll for 6 years.

She graduated High School in Agency, IA.

Mary greatly valued her family and friends. She was of Methodist faith and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was active in the Girl Scouts of America, Rainbow Girls Organization, and Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include husband, George of Burlington; three daughters, Diana (Doug Conner) Lehman of Salem, Anita Lehman of Des Moines, and Amy (Troy) Dodge of Burlington; four grandchildren: Amanda, Ryan and Trent Gorrell and DeLana Dodge; three great-grandsons: Gavin Bencze and Marcus and Rayden Gorrell; and several nieces and nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Dorothy Jeane Metz and Virginia Annabelle Gibson.

John Michael Ertzinger, 70, of Burlington, died at 12:38 AM Saturday, October 20, 2018, at his home.

Born March 28, 1948, in Burlington, he was the son of Leo Henry and Ruby May Kirby Ertzinger. On June 8, 1974, he married Beverly “Bev” Joyce Hartley in Burlington. She died on April 9, 2012.

John started at Murry Iron Works, which went through many name changes, and he retired as a machinist after 30 years.

He loved his grandsons, family and friends. He was Jeff Gordon and a 34 Raceway fan. He enjoyed hunting, coon hunting with his dogs, playing bingo, roller skating, and singing Karaoke (even though he could not always carry a tune). He was a member of Machinists Local 1010.

Survivors include his daughter, Melissa (Jared) Sommerfelt of Burlington; two grandsons, Dakotah & Kohltin Sommerfelt at home; three brothers, Wayne “Bud” Ertzinger and Randall “Randy” P. Ertzinger both of Burlington, Dale (Sue) Ertzinger of South East Muskegon, MI; one sister, Rita Kuhen of San Diego, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Daniel, and one sister-in-law, Veronica Ertzinger.

Verona M. Dean, 88, of Burlington passed away on October 28, 2018. She was the daughter of Lavern Triplett and Verna Martha Lawson.

Survivors include one daughter, Teresa Vaughn; one grandson, Andre Vaughn; two sisters, Frances Thomas and Evelyn Wilkerson; two brothers, Larry Miles and James Jones; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Terry Vaughn.

Ruth C. Stein, 89, of Burlington, died Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Bickford Cottage.

Born June 24, 1929 in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Sam and Sonia L. Chanen. She married Irvin M. Stein on March 27, 1949 in Burlington, IA. He preceded her in death on June 18, 2015.

Ruth graduated from Burlington High School and Northwestern University. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Temple Israel, T.T.T., the Rotary Club and the Hetta Gilbert Society. She served as Past Matron of EC Blackmar #306 O.E.S., Past Grand Organist of the Grand Chapter of Iowa O.E.S. and Past President of the Burlington United Way. She was recognized as Woman of the Year by the Girl Scouts of America.

Survivors include two sons, Loren C. Stein of Burlington and Randall C. Stein of Northglenn, CO; granddaughter, Amy (Vic) Wirtz of Cleveland, OH; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Laura and a brother, Frank Chanen of Chicago, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of sixty-six years, Irvin; and daughter Elaine Patterson and her husband Amos.

The funeral service for Mrs. Stein will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 1st at Lunning Chapel. Interment will follow in the Burlington Jewish Cemetery. Thomas Russell Wayman, 59, of Burlington, died at 10:05 PM Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born January 16, 1959, he was the son of Charles Russell and Dorothy Farrell Wayman. On September 4, 1982, he married Leslie Gilmer of Rolling Meadows, IL.

He started his career in the grocery industry at Eagle Foods and more recently worked at the Hy-vee in Burlington.

Thomas was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He enjoyed classic rock, reading and WWI and WWII history. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Paisley.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie; one son, Brandon Wayman of Red Wing, MN; one daughter, Lauren (Adam) Moyers of West Burlington; granddaughter, Paisley Moyers, and one grandchild on the way; one brother, Mike (Nancy) Wayman of Maricopa, AZ; one sister, Candy (Don) Olson of Anchorage, AK; three nieces and three nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Born October 29, 1939, in Monmouth, IL, he was the son of Hope Leander and Gayle Lonina Carter Eland. On March 8, 1969, he married Betty Rosaline Vass in Las Vegas, NV. She passed on October 27, 2017.

Ed enjoyed fishing and trains. He had a curiosity for how things worked and could fix anything that moved. He liked traveling, especially with his wife; his favorite trips being to Turkey and Italy.

Survivors include his two daughters, Dawn Fedor of Missouri and Laurie (Steve) Rathbun of Wever; step-son, Frank (Michele) Kiener of Norwalk, IA; step-daughter, Lana (Richard) Butler of Norfolk, VA; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth G. Wasson and Caryl Kerr both of Mt. Pleasant.

Donald Leight, 86, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at his home.

Born April 30, 1932, in Le Claire, IA, he was the son of Clarence and Lorine Chandler Leight. On July 31, 2004, he married Marilyn Fullner in Keokuk.

He retired from Case Co. in Bettendorf after 30 years working as a tool and die maker.

Donald was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from December 11, 1952 until December 10, 1954.

He attended First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and softball, bowling, playing cards, shooting pool and dancing.

David H. Chubb, 89, of Burlington died Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at Burlington Care Center.

Born February 26, 1929 in Burlington, he was the son of Jacob and Hilma (Hoglund) Chubb. He married Bess Dalrymple on April 20, 1952, she died November 17, 2005.

David was an Army veteran. He worked as a photographer for National Studio and continued on as a photographer for J.I. Case for 30 years. After his retirement he worked as a draftsman for Great River Medical Center.

He was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church, Eagles Aerie #150, Moose Lodge #527, Des Moines Masonic Lodge AF&AM #1, Shriner’s, American Legion, VFW, the Jazz Club and a former member of Carthage Lake Club.

He loved to golf, and earned 6 hole-in-one’s! He enjoyed bowling, archery, target shooting, coin and stamp collecting and was a musician. He treasured his time wintering in the South in Gulfport, MS.

Survivors include his special cat Mz. Chubb; three children, Valerie (Steve) Bohlen of Ames, IA, Jan Chubb-Parris of Burlington and Ken (Pat) Chubb of Gardner, KS; seven grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; companion, Mary Lou Kitterman of Burlington; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter in infancy, son-in-law Steve Parris and one brother James Chubb.

The funeral service for Mr. Chubb will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 9th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David Bracht-Wagner will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Masonic Rite will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 8th at Lunning Chapel followed by visitation with the family present until 8:00 p.m.

James L. Wensel, age 82 of Carman, Illinois, passed away at 7:06 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at his home. He was born February 3, 1936 in Spickard, Missouri, the son of William and Wilda Elliot Wensel. He was married to Shirley Madison. They later divorced. On July 11, 2007, he married Marjory Beasley. She survives.
Mr. Wensel lived in Carman since 1965. Prior to that he lived in the Central City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa area and worked for Blahnik Construction for many years. He served from 1956 – 1958 in the United States Army, stationed in Okinawa. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #38 and Laborers Local #43, both in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of, and former Commander of, the AMVETS Post #37 in Central City, Iowa.
James was an avid fisherman, and always donated his catch to the local church or AMVET organization. He loved restoring and repairing guns. He was well known in the Carman area for his beautiful yard, and when able, he assisted in the care of the Carman United Methodist Church grounds.
Survivors include his wife, Marjory, two sons, Richard Wensel and Jay Wensel, both of Cedar Rapids, two daughters, Nancy Wensel of Cedar Rapids, Melissa Wensel of Seattle, WA, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters, Judy Valasky of Madison, WI, Sherry Wagner of Minneapolis, MN and one brother, Jonathan Gabriel of Duluth, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Twylla Thomas, and one brother in law, Bill Wagner.

Mildred Frances Andrews, 99, of Burlington, died at 1:58 PM Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born April 21, 1919, in Dallas City, IL, she was the daughter of Elias Thomas and Mary May Barrett Sly. On May 2, 1942, she married John Fredrick Andrews in Kahoka, MO. He died on November 25, 1992.

She was a member of the Faith United Presbyterian Church and the Burlington Police Auxiliary Association. Mildred enjoyed quilting, baking, cooking, playing bingo and word search puzzles.

Donna L. McCannon, 80, of Lowell, died Friday, November 30, 2018 at the Donnellson Health Center.

According to her wishes, there will be no formal services and her body has been cremated. Visitation will begin at 9 AM on Saturday, December 8 at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family receiving friends from 11 – 1 PM. Inurnment will be held in Lowell Cemetery at a later date. Marie Caroline Paulus, 91, of Burlington, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018.
Born May 3, 1927, she was the daughter of William H. and Marie C. deBoer Bresser. On October 17, 1946, she married Warren Roy Paulus on his return from serving with the US Navy. Warren passed away on April 13, 2003.

Marie was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School.

During the war, she worked at Midwest Biscuit Company and later was a part time clerk at Ryder’s Confectionery.

She was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ, an SCC basketball ticket holder and a Chicago Cubs fan. Marie enjoyed walking, reading, going to the casino, playing card games with her family, watching Jeopardy, going on trips and attending events of her grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons, Robert (Lily) Paulus, David (Patricia) Paulus, James (Stephanie) Paulus, all of Burlington, and John (Debra) Paulus of Biggsville, IL, seven grandchildren Melody Paulus, Kammi Paulus, and Kerri Huffman of Burlington, Jackie (Shanae) Paulus of Chicago, IL, Caleb Paulus and Jared Paulus of Biggsville, IL, two great-grandchildren, Alex Kane of Ames, Elijah Kane of Burlington, two sisters, Joan Drish of Clearwater, FL, Virginia Jurss of West Bend, WI, two extended family members, Mark Billups and Brandon Billups of Burlington, sister-in-law, Helen Yaeger of Burlington, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Lois Bence and Elaine Ryder.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Prugh’s Chapel, downtown. A procession will follow for the graveside committal service at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Reverend Brice Hughes officiating.

David Wayne Ballinger, 67, of Burlington, died at 5:20 PM Friday, November 30, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born September 19, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Len Pearl and Martha Mae Carpenter Ballinger. On October 14, 1972, he married Jean Elizabeth Sherwood in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

David worked as an assembly worker at G.E. from 1973 until his retirement in 2007.

He graduated from Burlington High School.

David enjoyed working on old cars and was mechanically gifted. He really enjoyed rebuilding a ’52 Willys with his friend, Bill Conn. He also enjoyed all things antique, especially Winchargers, and would show them at Midwest Old Threshers. David would go to flea markets, auctions and swap meets. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing Canasta with his family, eating peanut butter cookies, Hershey Hugs and anything with rhubarb.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Burlington; two daughters, Anne (Paul) Wilson of Iowa City and Susan (Alan) Reinier of Cedar Rapids; son, Steven (Bonnie) Ballinger of El Paso, TX; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Kaitlyn “Kade”, Caecilia, Katherine, Isaac, Annalise and Andrew; sister, Carolyn (Reverend David) Stout; brother, Mark (Dana) Ballinger; three sisters-in-law, Sharon Ballinger, Shirley Ballinger and Linda (Dana) Pogemiller; brother-in-law, Bill (Lana) Sherwood; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Carl and Les Ballinger.

Rodney Joseph Harr, age 64 of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Thursday November 29, 2018 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born April 16, 1954 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Roger and Marlene Siegfried Harr.

Mr. Harr was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. He was employed for the past 30 years at Modern Welding in Burlington. Prior to that he had worked for Charlie Beard Painting Services in Stronghurst for several years.

Survivors include one daughter, Kayla Harr of Grundy Center, IA, one son, Benjamin Harr of West Burlington, IA, his mother, Marlene Harr of Stronghurst, three grandchildren, Lilly Grace Furniss, Lucy Joy Corvaia, Elliott Blaine Corvaia, two sisters, Sandra Leibli of Burlington, IA, Linda Detrick of Gladstone, IL, and two half-brothers, Terry Smith of Palestine, Texas and Jerry Smith of Stronghurst, IL. He was preceded in death by his father.

Jeanne Kettelkamp, age 94, of Stronghurst, Illinois passed away Saturday December 1, 2018 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst. She was born February 14, 1924 in Kirkwood, Illinois, the daughter of Clarence J. and Evelyn M. Winebright Talbott. On June 2, 1946, she married James A. Kettelkamp in Stronghurst.

Mrs. Kettelkamp lived most of her life in Stronghurst. She worked as a cook for the Media-Wever and Southern Schools from 1964 until 1980. She was an active member of the Stronghurst United Methodist church, where she provided aftercare for school children at the church. Church and family were the most important things in her life.

Debbie L. Engler, 61, of Burlington, died Saturday, December 1, 2018 at her residence.
Born August 5, 1957 in Iowa City, IA, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Diehl) Dougherty. She married Donald F. Engler February 11, 1978 in Iowa City, IA.
Debbie graduated from Iowa City High School and attended acting school at the University of Iowa. She was a homemaker.
She was of the Christian faith. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. She enjoyed feeding birds, and acting in her younger years. Her seven cats were very dear to her and she especially loved her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Donald; two daughters, Valerie Engler and Laura Zurmuehlen all of Burlington; six grandchildren, Sara, Audrey, Kolton, Ryan, Cameron and Jacob; mother, Mary of Iowa City, IA; and two sisters, Diane Dougherty of Iowa City, IA and Kathy Dougherty of Tulsa, OK.
She was preceded in death by her father and daughter, Sandra Engler.

Martha Marie Morse, 79, of Mediapolis, formerly of Burlington, died Monday, November 26, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care Center.
Born November 26, 1939, she was the daughter of Otis F. and Helen I. (Miller) Underwood.
Martha attended school in Burlington. She worked at Great River Klein Center for 18 years and other area care facilities for a total of 40 years as a Nurse’s Aide.
She was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting scrubbies, and sewing.
Survivors include daughter, Debbie Payne of Mediapolis, IA; son Mark Morse of Ft. Madison, IA; seven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; siblings, Gerald “Pete” Underwood of Cedar Rapids, IA, George Underwood of Ft. Madison, IA, Sandra Parton of Burlington, IA, Ramona Underwood of Bloomfield, IA, and Ruth Fischer of New London, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Lori; son, Ricky; two brothers, Robert and Garry; and two sisters, Phyllis and Loretta.
The memorial service for Mrs. Morse will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 5th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

Marion Elizabeth Wiele, 94, of Burlington, died at 7:43 pm Sunday, December 2, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 8, 1924, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank O. and Freda Kurtz Hunger. On December 27, 1951, she married Richard H. Wiele in Burlington. He later passed on May 9, 2008.

Marion worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell for 23 years, and then for Hope Haven for 20 years. For years, while at NW Bell, she worked split shifts, driving from Danville to Burlington and back twice a day in order to be with her kids when they got home from school. In the 1980’s, she owned and operated the Fullife Nutrition store in Fareway Center. She also ran a site for Southeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging for a number of years.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1942. She then attended Iowa Wesleyan College and Iowa State Teachers College.

She was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers. An excellent seamstress and cook, Marion was creative through artwork and love watching Wheel of Fortune.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynne Klaus of West Des Moines and Diane Morrison of Mediapolis; one son, David Wiele of Burlington; two grandsons, Jake Klaus and Daniel Morrison; one granddaughter, Savanna Billups Wolf; two great grandsons, Chase and Liam; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 5 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Somer Syrene Dingman, 36, died Friday, December 7, 2018 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 AM, December 27 at Elliott Chapel, New London with Mrs. Alisa Brouwer, Celebrant. Friends may call after 9 AM at the chapel and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private family burial of her cremains will be held at Burge Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Hope Haven Ertz Home.

Her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of her caregivers who have provided love and support over the years.

Jack Leland Wehrle, 84, of Burlington, died at 10:01 AM Saturday, December 8, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 7, 1934, he was the son of Walter and Anna Hoffman Wehrle. On November 22, 1959, he married Mary Joann Clemens at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point.

Jack touched many lives during his 32 year career in education, becoming many people’s favorite principal. He worked for several schools in the Burlington Community School District, holding many titles throughout, ending his career as principal of Burlington High School. His influence was so well recognized, BHS named their library after him. He was inducted into the Burlington Community School District Hall of Honor in 2002. After retiring from education, he worked for ADDS for 20 plus years. Jack dedicated over 50 years of his life to serving his community, and he was a mentor to many, and made a positive impression on people of all walks of life.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, and was stationed in Germany during his time in the service.

He was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He was a former City Councilman and member of the Burlington Municipal Waterworks board. He was passionate about education and loved to work with kids, even spending his summers teaching. Jack was a people person, he loved small children and holding babies. He loved traveling, especially to Europe even visiting where he was stationed, and enjoyed family vacations to the Ozarks and Wisconsin Dells. He liked music, going to Steamboat Days concerts and reading war stories.

Survivors include his wife, Joann of Burlington; four sons, Tony (Dana) Wehrle of Rock Island, IL, John (Laura) Wehrle of Burlington, Eric (Amy) Wehrle of Tampa, FL, and Patrick (Amy) Wehrle of Fort Madison; two daughters, Ann (John) Carl and Maria (Mark) Brockway both of Burlington; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger (Susan) Wehrle of Jacksonville, FL, and Jay “Pete” Wehrle of Mount Pleasant; five sisters, Betty Ensminger of Mount Pleasant, Kay (Jack) Behmer of Urbandale, IA, Diane (Bob) Olazek of Plainfield, IL, Elizabeth Kerr of Mount Pleasant, and Ginny (Jim) Ritchey of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shirley Wehrle.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 4:30 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Wehrle will be 10:00 AM Friday, December 14, 2018, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Burlington. James L. Schrock, 82, of Aurora, CO passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, December 3, 2018. He was born at home in rural Oakville, IA on December 29, 1935 to Noah and Hattie (Lanz) Schrock.

Survivors include one brother, Edward of Mediapolis, IA; six sisters, Ada Banwart of Mediapolis, IA, Lois Wiegand, Dorothy Schrock and Janet Beik of Burlington, IA, Alma Langland of Ottumwa, IA, and Eleanor Knobloch of Tremont, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Robert, and a sister Anna. A bachelor all his life, he took great interest in the lives of his many nieces and nephews and their children.

When he was three years old, he got his right hand caught in a pulley. One doctor suggested amputation; however, his father took him to a surgeon in Burlington who was able to salvage the hand even though it remained somewhat crippled. That did not prevent Jim from participating in sports at Huron High School.

After graduating from high school in 1954, he spent two years in the Army and later graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. He worked at various jobs in Los Angeles, CA and Chicago, IL. He moved to Aurora, CO in 1971 and was a very successful realtor for Moore Real Estate and eventually for ReMax Alliance. He was still a realtor at the time of his death and had no plans to retire.

Family and friends meant a lot to Jim. He faithfully stayed in touch with old friends. He loved reunions with his siblings or classmates each year when he visited his hometown in Iowa. He also loved sports, reading, traveling, eating a good steak, playing board games and taking naps.

Jim attended the Apostolic Christian Church of Aurora, CO.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Lunning Funeral Chapel in Burlington, IA. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Burlington, IA. There will be a memorial service at a later date in Aurora, CO.

Christine Brunk Carver, 67, of Burlington died December 6, 2018 at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington after a lengthy battle with Huntington’s disease. According to her wishes, her body has been deeded to the University of Iowa for research.
Christine is survived by her mother Eileen Peterson of Burlington; two daughters, Michelle Brunk Godwin of West Burlington and Stacey Simmon of Moline, Illinois and five grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of life and graveside inurnment at Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Milton E. “Red” Beardsley Jr., 74, of Burlington, died Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at his home.
Born April 12, 1944 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of Milton Beardsley Sr. and Frances Hill. He was a 1962 graduate of Burlington High School. He worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for over 21 years.
He was of the Christian faith.
He was an avid car enthusiast, especially Chevy’s and was a Dale Earnhart Sr. fan.
Survivors include his daughter Staci (Chad) Ralston of Las Vegas, Nevada; one grandson Derrick Mehaffy; one brother Charles (Linda) Beardsley of Corpus Christi, Texas and one sister Marilyn Tadlock of Wapello.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The memorial visitation for Mr. Beardsley will be 6 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 13th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Mr. Quinn Pence, 79, of Dallas City, IL died Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 11:03 AM at his home.

He was born March 27, 1939 in Dallas City, the son of Virgil R. and Ethel Mae Dickson Pence. On February 20, 1974 he married Nancy Gilpin in Dallas City.

Quinn graduated from the Dallas City High School in 1957. He started farming at an early age and continued throughout his life. He also ran a saw mill for several years, cut timber and raised livestock. Quinn served on the Dallas City School Board for twelve years.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, three daughters, Twila (Jeff) Peitz of Fort Madison, IA, Gwen (Bill) Scanlan of Fort Madison, Amy (John) Curran of St. Louis, MO and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vanessa Ives, one brother, Dick Pence an infant sister, Bonnie Jo Pence and his parents.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Aaron Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris Cemetery. Marjorie L. Mellinger, 90, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care Center.
Born April 24, 1928 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank Lee and Helen Louise (Burgess) Walker. She married Elwood Mellinger in October of 1948. He died April 29, 1977.
Marjorie graduated from Burlington High School and Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught in a one room school house, worked at Sylvania and was the librarian for the Mediapolis High School before she retired.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mediapolis. Her pastimes included camping, reading, and knitting.
Survivors include two sons, Dwight (Mary) Mellinger of Burlington and Duane (Jeanne) Mellinger of Port Aransas, TX; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Walker of Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, and two sisters.
The graveside service and interment for Mrs. Mellinger will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 14, 2018 at Kossuth Cemetery. Rev. Dan Baker will officiate.

He was born April 27, 1920 in Helsingborg, Sweden, the son of Zander and Hilda Akerman Hoffer. On August 20, 1956, he married Dolores Issacson in Monmouth, Illinois.

Mr. Hoffer attended schools in Sweden. He served in the Swedish Army Cavalry during World War II, protecting the Swedish border. He immigrated to the United States in 1948 and became a U.S. citizen on May 17, 1955. He lived in Monmouth, Illinois until 1965, when he moved to Stronghurst. He was employed at C.E. Neff Company in Stronghurst for 41 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst and the Stronghurst Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores of Stronghurst, 2, nieces, 2 nephews, 5 great nieces, 5 great nephews, and one cousin, all of Sweden. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Curt Hoffer, one sister, Ing-Gunnell Nolberger, and one sister in law.

Brett Alan Hill, 55, of rural Danville, formerly of Burlington, died at 10:32 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Great River Hospice.

Born April 1, 1963 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Robert and Bonnie (Goodwin) Hill. He married Cynthia McAllister on July 1, 2005 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Brett graduated from BHS and achieved his Automotive- Diesel Truck Technology Mechanic certification at Lincoln Technical Institute in Des Moines. During high school he was employed with Hill’s Conoco Station. He worked at Ruan as a diesel mechanic and in the maintenance department at Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Mt. Pleasant. Brett became a professional Pressman while working for The Hawkeye Newspaper. He was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union.

Mr. Hill was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ. As a youth, he was a member of the scouts. He loved animals and was a member of the National Wildlife Federation. Brett was the campaign chairman for the American Diabetes Association annual drive in his neighborhood. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hunting deer, squirrels, turkey, and mushrooms. Brett enjoyed riding his Harley, repairing and restoring cars with family and friends. Brett loved watching NASCAR, attending concerts, and helping others. His grandchildren all held a special place in his heart, he was honored to act as grandfather to many other children.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia, a daughter, Ashley (Mark Stolze) Carr of Ankeny, IA; bonus daughter, Barbara (Ellis) Codjoe of Ottumwa, IA; bonus son, Anthony (Sara) Barrett of Plumas Lake, CA; grandchildren Kirra, Eva, Aria, Jacob, Matthew, RieLynn and Madison; his parents of Terlingua, TX; sister, Katrina Harvey of Fargo ND; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; two brothers, David Troy and Clint Robert; and sister, Dianne Kathleen.

The Celebration of Life Service for Brett Hill will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday December 15th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 14, 2018 at Lunning Chapel. Cremation will be accorded after the service.

Judy Ann Cole, age 76, of Smithshire, IL, passed away Wednesday December 12, 2018 at her home. She was born January 22, 1942 in Aledo, IL, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret Olson Farm. She married Max Cole in Biggsville, IL.

Judy was a graduate of Biggsville High School. She worked in the Smithshire post office for many years. She was an active member of the Biggsville United Methodist Church, where she had served as secretary, leader of the United Methodist Women, and head of the Church Memorial Committee. She was also active in the Smithshire United Methodist Women. Judy loved to play bridge, and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Survivors include her husband, three sons, Rick (Shari) Cole of Davenport, IA, Brad Cole of Lake Mills, WI, Mike (Susan) Cole of Kansas City, MO, four grandchildren, Daniel, Jessica, Allison, and Jake Cole, two brothers, Bob (Gwen) Farm of Alexis, IL, Don (Donna) Farm of Monmouth, IL, five sisters, Fran (Denny) Hamm of Rockford, IL, Margaret (David) Yez of Monmouth, IL, Pat (Larry) Russell of Gladstone, IL, Connie (Chuck) Larimer of Monmouth, IL, Debbie Farm of Denver, CO, and one brother in law, James (Teresa) Cole of Texas. Larry R. Johnson, 78, formerly of Danville, residing in West Burlington, died December 11, 2018 at Great River Klein Center.
Born July 22, 1940 at home in rural Burlington, he was the son of Ralph and Fern Johnson. He married Sandra K. Wolford on June 29, 1985 at West Burlington Christian Church.
Larry graduated from Danville High School. He went on to attain his BS and BA degrees from the University of Denver. He served in the United States National Guard. After college Larry started his career as an FBI agent in Chicago. He also worked for United Airlines in Chicago, as a farmer and was a civilian employee at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, working as an administration officer.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in West Burlington. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, was a die-hard Cubs fan and had a tremendous love for his family and friends.
Larry is survived by his wife, Sandi of West Burlington; daughter, Tami Rogers of Danville; grandsons, Cody Rogers of Mt. Pleasant, Matt Rogers of Danville, and Jessy Hand of Denver, CO; son, Jochen (Alex) Dingfelder and granddaughter Anna of Germany; great grandchildren, Liam, Josiah and Ella Skye; sister, Dorothy Swedenburg of rural Danville; special friend, Teresa Giffin; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and their beloved dog, Kassie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Beverly Jean Buras, 69, of Burlington died 6:45 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Burlington Care Center.
Born April 21, 1949 in Great Falls, Montana she was the daughter of Paul James and Josephine Mary (Ballatore) Hamill.
She was a 1967 graduate of Great Falls High School.
She was of the Catholic faith.
She loved playing slots at the casino and Bingo, coloring intricate pictures and rooting for the New York Giants. She was a member of Eagles Aerie #150.
Survivors include her three children; Ty (Sabrina) Buras of Burlington, Joseph Fritz-Buras (Allison) of Galesburg, Illinois and Kimberly John Buras of North Liberty, Iowa; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister Patricia “Pat” Burger of Burlington and one niece Sandra Kaleva of Great Falls, Montana.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 21st at Burlington Care Center.

Norma J. McAlister, 83 of Danville, died Thursday, December 13, 2018 at her residence.
Born September 17, 1935 in Bridgewater, IA, she was the daughter of Clem Alfred and Neva M. (Smith) Sinner. She married Gene Leslie McAlister on May 6, 1955 in Council Bluffs, IA. He died September 13, 2016.
Norma graduated from Bridgewater High School and attended Business College in Omaha. She worked at Sylvania, National Research Bureau, as a bus driver and cafeteria worker at Danville School. She owned and operated Fun Tyme Tavern.
Norma was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed league and individual bowling, going to the casino and playing Bingo. She was a member of the Eagles Club.
Survivors include daughter, Leslie Fraise of New London, IA; three sons, Mick (Diana Foster Walker) McAlister of Cedar Rapids, IA, Rick (Cathy) McAlister of Middletown, IA and Barry McAlister of Burlington, IA; stepdaughter, Debra (Kevin) Shepard of Overland Park, KS; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie McCall of Mediapolis, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother.

Leona Mae Schmeiser, 91, of West Burlington, died Friday, December 14, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born November 10, 1927 in Des Moines County, IA, she was the daughter of Campbell William and Anna Ruth (Wehage) Granaman. She married Robert John Schmeiser October 15, 1966 at Salem Lutheran Church in Des Moines County, Iowa. He died April 12, 1981.
Leona graduated from Sperry High School and received her B.A. degree in Education from Iowa Wesleyan College and Master’s Degree in Corrective Reading from Northeast Missouri State College. Mrs. Schmeiser taught school for 43 consecutive years, retiring in 1989. She planned and implemented the first corrective reading program for the West Burlington School system.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She served as a past council member, Sunday school teacher, Bible School teacher and on the Evangelism Committee. She was a former member of the West Burlington Education Association, ISEA and NEA, having served offices on the local level; past International Reading Association, state, and local member, having served as local president; Alpha Delta Kappa, Iowa Sigma Chapter; and charter member of the W.E. Arnold Memorial Scholarship Board.
Survivors include one brother, Lester Henry Granaman from Sperry, IA; one sister, Doris Ann Housman from Burlington, IA; nephews, Glenn Granaman, Gary Housman and Jeff (Kathy) Housman, Butch Schmeiser and Lee Edwin Schmeiser and Bill Siefken; Nieces Gail (Herb) Murry and Mary (Mike) Permann, Debbie Schmeiser, Nancy Baugher; great-nephews, Richard McCauslin, Layton Housman, Kelton Granaman and Ben Schmeiser; great-nieces, Kelli, Jennifer, and Stephanie McCauslin, and Angel Oak and Great-Great Nephews and Nieces.

Frances “Fran” Louise Kost, 96, of Burlington, died at 4:10 AM Monday, December 17, 2018, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born December 1, 1922, in Leon, IA, she was the daughter of George W. and Grace Green Lamphiear. She married Leonard Kost, they later divorced.

Fran retired in 1995 after 41 years at J.S. Schramm Company. She later worked at Montgomery Ward from 1999-2002.

She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Tanya (Jay) Doyscher; grandson, Dion Kost; great-grandsons, Blake Campisi, Joseph (Chelsea) Schwartz, and Seth Kost; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Leonard Kost; infant son, John Edward, beloved son and daughter-in-law Larry G. and Sharon K. Kost; sister, Jane Northcut, infant sister, Martha Lamphiear, brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Oleta Lamphiear, Howard and Beverly Lamphiear, and Glen and Laura Lamphiear and sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” and Alan Losee.

Born October 24, 1939 in Blandinsville, Illinois he was the son of Edgar B. and Mildred O. (Oard) Burkett. He married Nancy L. Cross on February 4, 1961 in Middletown.
Glenn was a graduate of Blandinsville High School and Western Illinois University.
He served as Assistant Vice President for First Star Bank, First National Bank and US Bank for 35 years. After retirement he worked for Heritage Pharmacy delivering to various nursing homes and hospitals.
He was of the Lutheran Faith.
He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #150, the Burlington Kiwanis Club, Jaycees and the American Beekeeping Association.
Survivors include his wife Nancy Burkett of Burlington; one daughter Diana (Terry) Schneden of Burlington; one son H. Glenn Burkett III of Burlington; two grandsons, Austin and Jeremy; one brother Frank Burkett of Dallas City, Illinois and one sister Phyllis Shepard of West Burlington.

Wanda Rae George, 89, of Burlington, died at 4:15 PM Sunday, December 16, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born December 13, 1929, in Sperry, she was the daughter of William and Daisy Wagner Johnston. She was married to Wesley Cone for 20 years, together they had one son, Dudley. On May 25, 1973, she married Lewis George in Galesburg, IL.

Wanda taught 2nd grade in Middletown for 28 years and then finished her career teaching 4th grade at Sunnyside Elementary in Burlington for 4 years.

She earned her Bachelor’s from Iowa Wesleyan and Her Master’s Degree from Western Illinois University in Macomb.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Wanda enjoyed cooking, being outdoors, family gatherings, fishing, traveling, going on cruises, and listening to music. She loved animals, especially her Corgi, Billy, but most of all, Wanda loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include her son, Dudley W. (Leanne) Cone of Burlington; three grandchildren, Jared (Emily) Cone, Sarah (Mike) Spens and Ross Cone, and three great-grandchildren, Ben, Haley and Oliver.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, parents and brother, Wayne Johnston.

Mr. David Dean Bouge, 69, of Burlington, Iowa, died at his home December 16, 2018.

Son of Everett and Evelyn Bouge, he was born July 9, 1949 in Fort Madison, Iowa. A family man through and through, David married Debra Lynn Stone June 24, 1990 and is survived by his two sons David “D.J.” (Alex Hohman) Bouge of Burlington, Iowa, and Dylan (Emily) Bouge of Mediapolis, Iowa. A truly incredible father, David was active in Scouts and Little League while his boys were young and an avid Iowa State, Bears, and Cubs fan. He was a Burlington High School graduate, class of 1967, of the Protestant faith and an incredibly hard working man having worked for Champion production for 14 years followed by American Ordinance for the last 7 years come January.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Debi, who passed away September 20, 2016, and his parents.

Services will take place in Burlington, Iowa with a funeral service officiated by Reverend Dean Graber 10:00 am Saturday, December 22nd at Lunning Chapel. Interment will follow directly after in Aspen Grove Cemetery followed by a luncheon, location TBD. Visitation to be held at Lunning Chapel Friday, December 21st 5:00-7:00pm.

Larry Bumgardner, 73, of Burlington, died at 11:18 am Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at his home in Burlington.

Born October 24, 1945, in Wapello, he was the son of Max Delzell and Lillian Laurene Buffington Bumgardner.

Larry worked for Case for 37 years in the Paint Department.

He attended High School at Wapello Community High School as well as Burlington High School.

Larry was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Eagle’s Club. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, teach kids how to fish at Crapo Park and to kid and joke around with friends and family. Larry loved to sing his favorite old songs and Vegas shows.

Survivors include son, Jason (Heather) Bumgardner of St. Helens, IL, son, Max (Christinia) Bumgardner of Petersburg, IL, daughter, Natalie (Chris) Eid of Fort Madison, six grandchildren: Dustin, Gage, Bryce, Skylar, Dayton and Alexander; sister, Patty Peck of Beloit, WI.

Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his two sisters, Linda Peterson and Sally Dinsmoor.

Larry Eugene Pender, 77, of Burlington, died at 4:47 PM Monday, December 17, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington surrounded by his family.

Born August 16, 1941, in Milton, IA, he was the son of Phil F. and Velma Carter Pender. On April 28, 1964, he married Barbara Jean Adams in Memphis, MO.

Larry worked for Philco Ford in Fairfield and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1960 until 1963.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Burlington; two sons, Kevin Pender of Donnellson, and Kenneth (Tracy) Pender of Burlington; daughter, Karen (Gail) Hoskins of Kirksville, MO; brother, Leo (Pat) Pender of Moline, IL; two sisters, Marcella (Bill) Prevo of Bloomfield, IA, and Marlene (John) Henry of Memphis, MO; and four grandchildren: Gauge, Mikenna, Treah and Hunter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mildred, Marge, and Mary; and four brothers, Lester, Lawrence, Lowell, and Lynn.

The funeral service for Larry will be 2:00 PM Sunday, December 23, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Tracey Burgus officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Milton Sunnyside Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the continued care of the Milton Sunnyside Cemetery.

Rosa Mae Harris, 78, of Burlington, died Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born January 6, 1940 in Belzoni, Mississippi, she was the daughter of Robert Russell and Lela (Hales) Powers. She married Glenn J. Harris on August 29, 1959 in Burlington.
Rosa Mae was a member of the Burlington Church of Christ. She was a faithful Christian leaving behind a legacy of faith and values. She loved spending time with family, playing games at family gatherings resulting in good laugh until you cry “belly laughs” and being involved with her grandchildren’s lives. She enjoyed walking at the mall and shopping. One of her favorite things as a servant of God to do was to visit shut-ins. Her kind words, positive attitude, and generous heart have made a difference in the many lives she touched.
She is survived by her husband Glenn Harris of Burlington; one daughter Brenda (Dave) Kirchner of Rock Island, Illinois; one son Jay (Joi) Harris of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Ryan (Sara) Kirchner of Kittery, Maine, Josh Kirchner of Rock Island, Illinois, Justin (Haylee) Harris of West Burlington, Joel (Teylor Norris) Harris of West Burlington and Jordan (Jamie Forrett) Harris of Burlington and one great granddaughter Harlee Jo Harris.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers Jimmy, Tommy and Albert Powers.
The funeral service for Mrs. Harris will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 21st at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David Baker will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 20th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

T.K. “King” Ford, 67, of Burlington, died from complications of pneumonia at 6:43 PM Thursday, December 20, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 5, 1951, in Grand Forks, ND, he was the son of Truxton King “T.K.” and Ruth Mitchell Ford.

He held many jobs over the years including being a computer tech, clam diver in the Mississippi River, mechanic and long-distance truck driver. T.K. spent most of his life in Iowa City.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1969. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa.

He was an accomplished guitarist and member of bands including “TKO and The Rollers”. He loved computers, music of all kinds (his favorite being rock) and was an accomplished water skier, with his best event being the slalom.

Survivors include father, Truxton King “T.K.” Ford of Burlington, sisters: Jan (Les) Edwards of Lincoln, NE, Merry (James) Wiseman of Burlington; brother, Daniel (LuAnn) Ford of Wellman, IA; ten nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

There will be no visitation or services at his request.

Penny Clark,70 , of Burlington, died Thursday, December 20, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 26, 1948, in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of James Henry and Alberta L. DeLong Clark.

Penny was a CNA and physical therapy tech for Burlington Care Center for over 18 years. She had also worked for Sickles Cleaners, U.S. Navy, Marshall’s, Sun Air Care Center in Panorama City, CA, and Laurel Hill Nursing Home in Grant’s Pass, OR.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1966. She later attended Southeastern Community College and graduated with an Associate of Science Degree

She was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from October 1, 1967 until October 1, 1976.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoying spending her time sewing, reading, gardening, and baking; but most of all she loved being with family.

Survivors include mother, Alberta L. Clark; daughter, Kathleen (Mike) McRoberts of Mazeppa, MN; brother, Kenneth Mitchell of Mediapolis; sister, Peggy Turner of Dalton, GA; niece, Michelle (Brian) Clarke, great nephew Harrison and great niece Danica of Quincy, IL; and cousins, Dan and Joyce Brehm.

She was preceded in death by her father and step-father, Stanley Lyle Brehm.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Doris Hoelzen, 89, of Burlington, died Sunday, December 23, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 16, 1929, in Neenah, WI, she was the daughter of Earl and Lydia Wilms Hughes. Doris grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm.

At age 10, while attending Crescent Lake Bible Camp in northern Wisconsin, Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior.

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in journalism.

Doris was the managing editor of Horse World magazine, a national saddle horse publication, for five years.

She married Keith A. Hoelzen on January 28, 1956. Together they operated Triple H Ranch, a purebred Polled Hereford operation, for more than 35 years and showed cattle at major shows throughout the United States.

Doris was a High School teacher in Oakville for two years and realtor for over 30 years.

Survived by son, Hugh, daughter-in-law, Carolyn, and grandson, Jared.

The Graveside Committal Service for Doris will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery, with former pastor and family friend, Dean Graber, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Cedarville University.

Betty Jean Everman, 88, of Burlington died December 21, 2018, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis, Iowa. Born December 18, 1930 in Garden Grove, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harry G. Lang and Lura R. Thompson Lang.

On October 12, 1951, she married Karl C. Everman at Corydon, Iowa. Betty and Karl moved to Mediapolis in 1962 where they remained until his death in June 1994. Betty moved to Burlington shortly after.

Betty graduated from Allerton High School in 1948. She was a homemaker, beautician and worked many clerical jobs throughout her life.

Survivors include two daughters; Linda (Dan) Anderson of Burlington and Eve Steele of Mount
Pleasant; four grandchildren, Stacy, Tami, Corey and Ashley; three great-grandchildren, Abby, Lyla and Michael; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother, Robert Lang, and a sister, Giovonna Lang.

A private graveside service with the family will be at the Kossuth Cemetery.

Robert Lee Hamann, age 79 of Morning Sun, died Friday December 21, 2018 at OSF HealthCare Center in Peoria, Illinois. The son of Edward and Ethel (Connolly) Hamann, he was born in rural Morning Sun. On May 22, 1963 he married Patricia Duffy at Morning Sun.
He was a graduate of the Morning Sun High School and attended auto mechanic trade school. He worked at Hawkeye Group in Mediapolis for several years.
He enjoyed trap shooting and was a former member of Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include; his wife of Morning Sun; one son Randall Hamann of Morning Sun; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one daughter and one granddaughter.
Cremation has been accorded and no services are being planned.
A memorial for local school youth trap shooting has been established.
