Bill Venvertloh, 48, of Burlington, died at 9:45 AM Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born January 30, 1970, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Donald Lee and Gracie Ferguson Venvertloh. On October 10, 1998, he married Julie Heater in Burlington.

Bill was a Sergeant for the Burlington Police Department where he was employed for 21 years.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1988. He was a 1995 graduate of Western Illinois University with a degree in criminal justice.

Bill enjoyed going over to his Grandma Lettie Mae’s house as a boy to help with chores because he knew he would be rewarded with a feast of wonderful, homemade food. Boy Scouts were important to Bill and he achieved the rank of Life Scout. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved time spent coaching baseball for his boys teams, playing cards, fantasy football and baseball. He loved golfing with his brothers, and cherished the brothers annual bowling tournament where the winner took home not only a trophy, but bragging rights for the next year.

Survivors include his parents; his wife; two sons, Jacob Venvertloh and Samuel Venvertloh; two brothers, Neal (Kara) Venvertloh of Burlington, Dave Venvertloh of Lakewood, CO; mother-in-law, Barb Heater of Burlington; father-in-law, Ed Heater of New London; one sister-in-law, Kim (Chad) Kerr of Jefferson City, MO; two nieces and one nephew, Kiley, Chelsey, and Koby Kerr.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and two uncles.

Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Bill will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at the Burlington Memorial Auditorium with Reverend Simeon Counterman and Jill Larkins officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for his sons’ college education.

Delores E. Shoemate, 86, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 2:15 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2018 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, IA.

She was born on August 28, 1932 in Smithshire, IL the daughter of James A. and Mildred Paul Krow Sr. On October 25, 1951 she married John H. Shoemate in LaHarpe, IL. He preceded her in death on September 8, 2002.

Delores enjoyed cooking, embroidery, filling out number books and especially enjoyed visiting with friends and spending time with family. She was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Newberry of Dallas City, three sons, Jeffrey (Becky) Shoemate of Fort Madison, James (Teresa) Shoemate of Burlington, IA and John (Angela Schroeder) Shoemate of Fort Madison, five grandchildren, Lowell Newberry, Kandi Jo Newberry, Jessica (Alan) Menke, Samantha Shoemate and Gracie Shoemate, five great-grandchildren and one on the way, one brother, Richard Krow of Dallas City, one sister, Bertha Blindt of Biggsville, IL and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Sally Luder, son-in-law, Steve Newberry, two brothers, James Jr. and Harold Krow and one sister, Betty Kennebeck.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Larry Mencshel and Rev. Jim Luder officiating. Burial will be in the Harris Cemetery, Dallas City. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Banks & Beals where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established from the John Shoemate Memorial Kids Fishing Tournament or the Dallas City Disc Golf League. Donald Chamberlin, 61, of West Burlington died December 27, 2018 at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at Walker Mortuary and Cremation Services in Freeport, IL at a later date. Cremation has been accorded. Lunning Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Howard Stimpson, 70, of Burlington, died at 7:26 pm Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born October 27, 1948, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Earnest and Betty Gard Stimpson.

He was of Catholic faith and worked in advertising for several years.

Survivors include his sister, Sharon (Bob) Rady of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Per the families wishes, there will be a burial held at a later date at Carman Cemetery in Carman Il.

Wilma H. Groe, 97, of Burlington, died Friday, December 28, 2018 at her residence.
Born January 9, 1921 in Northwood, Iowa, she was the daughter of Henry George and Minnie Florence (Conger) Neilandt. She married Kenneth Groe July 6, 1941 in Northwood, Iowa. He died January 3, 1985.
Wilma graduated from Northwood High School. During World War II, she was a real life “Rosie the Riveter” working on the B-29 assembly line at Boeing in Wichita, Kansas. She also worked as a self-employed bookkeeper for Ken’s Skelgas and part-time as a sales clerk at Schramm’s for 14 years.
Mrs. Groe was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She belonged to Burlington General Federation of Women’s Club, PEO Chapter NI, King’s Daughters, civic music, and various church circles.
Wilma enjoyed playing Bridge and in her retirement years, traveling the world with her husband Ken. She had a passion for music that began early in life. She played the French horn for Northwood High School’s award winning band in 1936, and continued her love of music singing in the church choir for many years. Throughout her life Wilma was involved in all facets of Burlington arts, music and philanthropic organizations.
Survivors include nieces, great-nieces, great nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Chrystle White, Margaret Godfrey, Florence, Dale and Donald Neilandt; brother in laws; sister in laws; and special friend Judy Steward.
The funeral service for Mrs. Groe will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner and Mr. Gary Snider will officiate. Visitation will follow the service with a celebration of life at The Loft, 416 Jefferson Street, Burlington, IA. Graveside services and burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa.

Gary Lee Hobby, age 66, of Terre Haute, Illinois, passed away Friday December 28, 2018 at Solara Specialty Hospital in Brownsville, Texas. He was born October 23, 1952 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of William Lee and Pauline Louise Gittings Hobby. Gary was married to Nancy Tudor. They later divorced. On December 15, 1995, he married Marie Golliday in Lomax, Illinois. She survives.

Gary was a welder for J.I. Case Company in Burlington for many years, retiring in 2001. He also farmed near Terre Haute for many years. He had been a volunteer fireman for Lomax Fire Department, and later, the Terre Haute Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Lomax Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marie, two daughters, Amanda Jack of Stronghurst, IL, Laura (Nathan) Mehaffy of Danville, IA, four grandchildren, Peyton and Spencer Jack, and Dane and Marin Mehaffy, four step grandchildren, one sister, Peggy Nixon of Lomax, IL, and two nieces, Heidi Ruebush and Angela McConnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, with Larry Hobby officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute Cemetery, at a later date. A memorial fund has been established for the Terre Haute Fire Department. Loretta Arlene Schmitz, 91, lifelong resident of Burlington, died at 8:00 p.m., December 29, 2018 at West Point Care Center.
She was the only child of Roy and Alma (Weigel) Huppenberger, born December 1, 1927. On November 21, 1946 she married Paul Howard Schmitz at Spring Grove Church.
Loretta began work as a bookkeeper for First National Bank. She later worked at JC Penney and at Paul Schmitz Body Shop as her husband’s bookkeeper.
Loretta loved to sew, read, watch old movies, travel and also can and freeze the produce from the family garden. Quilting was her favorite activity. Loretta made many quilts for family and friends.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles, and First United Methodist Church.
Loretta is survived by her husband Paul; three daughters, Judith (David) Olmsted of Burlington, Cynthia (David) Mc Cannon of Gladstone, IL, and Pamella (Tod) Ferguson of Lomax, IL; one son, Thomas Schmitz of Taylorsville, IN; twelve grandchildren and twenty eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, and several aunts and uncles.
The funeral service for Mrs. Schmitz will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.
In lieu of flowers a memorial to West Point Care Center has been established.

Lowell Mohr, 82, of Terre Haute, IL passed on to his heavenly home at 7:05 p.m. December 29, 2018 at Genesis East, Davenport, IA.
He was born May 21, 1936 in Fort Madison, IA the son of Cecil and Faith Dugger Mohr. He married his sweetheart, Jane Butler, April 10, 1955. He missed her every day since she passed away May 30, 2017.
Lowell attended Tiawappity Grade School and graduated from Dallas City High School in 1954. He earned his American Farmer degree in 1956.
He was a lifelong farmer who believed pick-ups should be red and tractors green.
Lowell served on the Stockland FS board, in Henderson County Pork Producers and as Terre Haute Township Republican Precinct Committeeman for many years.
He was also a faithful member of the Terre Haute United Methodist Church.
Left to carry on his legacy of faith, family and farming are his daughter Annetta (Rowen) Ziegler of LaHarpe and son James (Joan) Mohr of LaHarpe; six grandchildren Benjamin Ziegler, Anna Ziegler, Sarah LeJeune, Justin Mohr, Morgan Parker, Tiffany Kissinger; four great-grandchildren Sawyer and Sage Mohr, Brinley and Cohen Kissinger; and three sisters Evelyn Corzatt, Erva Corzatt, and Roselyn Gonzalez.
Lowell was preceded in death by his wife Jane, his parents and one sister Gracia Waddill.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial will be in the Terre Haute Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Terre Haute United Methodist Church.

Wayne Hogberg, 87, of Burlington, died at 3:06 PM Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born October 28, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Joe and Ethel Hogberg. He married Joan Beverly Holst on May 6, 1951 in Burlington.

Wayne worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for 30 years before his retirement.

Wayne was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from January 16, 1951 until February 28, 1983. Following his service in the Korean War, Wayne served in the National Guard for 25 years. During his time in the military, he received several honors including, the Bronze Star with V, Korean Service Medal with 2 Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal.

He was a member of First Christian Church. He enjoyed boating, fishing and woodworking. Wayne was elected mayor of Burlington in 1972, and served for 10 years. He was a member of the Burlington City Council for four years and once served as the Chair of Steamboat Days.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Burlington; three sons, Shawn Hogberg of Chandler, AZ, Scott Hogberg of St. Peters, MO, and Steven Hogberg of Port Saint Lucie, FL; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Hogberg of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Susan; and two brothers, Harold and Carl Hogberg.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The funeral service for Mr. Hogberg will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2019, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the burial.

Karl Robert Thompson, 49, of Lomax, IL passed away at 6:08 PM Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

He was born October 16, 1969 in Burlington, IA, the son of Robert and Joyce Gustafson Thompson. He first married Sherri Jerzyk. They had two children, Shelby and Dugan. On March 8, 2005 he married Juliana M. Collins in LaHarpe.

Karl was a 1988 graduate of the Dallas City High School and a 1990 graduate of Southeastern Community College. He was employed at Ideal Ready Mix in Fort Madison, IA. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and singing karaoke. He especially enjoyed following his children’s sporting events and family gatherings where he would often grill a meal for the whole family. He was always ready to lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, Juliana, six children, Shelby Thompson of Chandler, AZ, Dugan Thompson of LaHarpe, IL, Dalton Thompson, Daniel Thompson, Isabella Thompson and Kinley Thompson all of Lomax, his mother, Joyce Thompson of Lomax, one brother, Kevin (Teresa) Thompson of Lomax, five sisters, Rhonda (the late Steve) Foley of Lomax, Melanie (Rick) Evans of Lomax, Leana (Karl) Yard of LaHarpe, Andrea Thompson of Cedar Rapids, IA and Marie (Robert) Berry of Lomax, his father-in-law, Claude Collins of LaHarpe, his brother-in-law Bill Collins of LaHarpe and sisters-in-law, Betty and Patty both of Burlington and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, a niece, Nichole Harman, his grandparents and mother-in-law, Rose Collins.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Dallas City Grade School Gymnasium with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Dorothea Lange-Vance, 92, of Nauvoo, IL passed away at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the Saint Vincent Nursing Home in Quincy, IL.

She was born on November 3, 1926 in Postville, IA, the daughter of George and Velma James Weber. She married William Lange, he preceded her in death. She then married Thomas Vance, he preceded her in death.

Dorothea was a longtime resident of Nauvoo. She had worked as a homemaker, at Casey’s as a donut maker and was an active member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo. Her family was most important to her.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Monnier of Hamilton, IL, three sons, Bernard (Nina) Lange of Donnellson, IA, Robert Lange of Council Bluffs, IA and Edward (Carol) Lange of Florida, twelve grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one sister, Verlie Smith of Las Vegas, NV.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, two daughters, Linda Henriksen and one in infancy, two sisters and two brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30AM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo with Father Tony Trosley as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Nauvoo. Katherine Elizabeth Maupin, 92, of Burlington, died at 7:00 PM Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born July 2, 1926, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Deane Leroy and Helen Margaret Hartman Geren. On September 3, 1960, she married Leonard Lindsey Maupin in Biggsville, IL. He died March 31, 2002.

Kay and her husband owned and operated Len’s Main Street Shell where she was the bookkeeper and was a homemaker.

She was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Hope Circle. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan living long enough to see her dream come true, the Cubs winning the World Series. She enjoyed fishing at Bruce’s cabin, feeding birds, watching trains go by, playing scrabble, and loved to cook, especially baking pies.

Survivors include one daughter, Sue (Tom) Birkenstock of Burlington; two sons, Bruce (Joyce) Maupin and Bill (Shawnna) Maupin both of Burlington; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Roth of Davenport, and Jean Biorn of Minocqua, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Friday, January 11, 2019, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral for Mrs. Maupin will be 2:00 PM Friday, January 11, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Kirk William Erickson, 72, of Burlington, died at 12:20 am Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born July 15, 1946, in Burlington, he was the son of William E. and Minnie Mae Swanson-Peterson Erickson. On September 1, 1984, he married Judy A. Moore in Burlington.

Kirk worked as the Director of Department of Human Services for Des Moines, Henry and Louisa Counties, Social Worker at Washington Heights, Park View and Prairie Ridge Care Centers and as a Manager of Rose Bush Assisted Living Center.

Kirk was a Danville High School 1964 graduate and a 1970 graduate of Kirksville College.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran from 1965 to 1967 aboard USS Independence and served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1967 to 1971.

Kirk was a really hard worker even after his heath problems. He built dollhouses for his grandkids and he and Judy built their own shed, screened porch and garage. Kirk loved traveling, going to Branson, dancing with Judy, boating on the river, country and gospel music and Gaither Gospel Hour. One of his favorite past times was watching the 34 Races. He loved Lionel model trains and he built a whole model in his basement. Kirk enjoyed going on outings every day with Judy.

Survivors include wife, Judy A. Erickson of Burlington, two daughters, Nicki (Randy) Stogdill of Burlington and Kathy Moore of New London; two sons, Mike Moore and Jeff Moore both of Escondido, CA; five grandchildren, Logan (Emily) Stogdill of Kingsland, GA, Layne Stogdill of Gladstone, IL, Kenzie Higdon of New London, Brendan Higdon of Burlington, and Kelsi Stogdill of Burlington; one aunt, one uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Kirk was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Bonnie Kinsey.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends during a visitation from 2:00PM until 4:00PM at the Messiah Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 12th, 2019.

Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at 4:00 PM after his visitation.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Special Needs Foundation.

James “Jim” Weinreich, 68, of Burlington died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Great River Medical Center.
Born December 15, 1950 in Burlington he was the daughter of Leslie C. and Madelon (Reid) Weinreich.
He worked as a truck driver for Golden Furrow Fertilizer.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending auctions. He was a 42 year member of “The Chosen Few.
Survivors include five sisters; Kathy Thomson, Linda Weinreich, Peggy Huggins, Diane Gonzales and Lani Hind; three brothers, Dean Weinreich, Dan Weinreich and Niki Hind; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Connie, one brother Chuck and his brothers from “The Chosen Few”.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held in North Walker Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

Kenneth Martin Nehring, 78, of New London, died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals.

The funeral service for Kenneth Nehring will be 11:00 Friday at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow at Burge Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday with family present from 5 – 7 PM. Mary Lou Dalton, 85, of Rockford, Illinois, formerly of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at Crimson Point Assisted Living Center in Rockford. She was born April 15, 1933 in Stronghurst, the daughter of Ed and Eva Hohstadt Bowen. On April 27, 1951, she married Donald C. Dalton in Stronghurst. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1998.

Mary Lou was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. She worked at Burlington Farm Machinery Company for ten years, and later was bookkeeper for Southern School District in Stronghurst for several years. She had lived in Stronghurst, Carman, and later, Mount Sterling, and moved to Rockford following the death of her husband. She loved growing flowers, singing in the church choir, cooking, bird watching, and playing Rook and Dominoes with family and friends. She was a member of the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ben (Vicki) Dalton of Byron, IL, Scott (Dianne) Dalton of Mount Sterling, IL, three grandchildren, Jake Dalton, Kendra Cox, Annie Dalton, three great grandchildren, Ascher Cox, Berkley Dalton, and Braxton Dalton, and two brothers, Harold “Tuffy” Bowen of Farmington, IL, and Larry Bowen of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Vince and Carl Bowen and one sister, Betty Norris.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until Noon Friday January 11, 2019 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. A graveside service will be at 12:15 p.m. Friday in the Stronghurst Cemetery, with Pastor Lisa Unger officiating. Ernest Eugene ‘Ernie’ Gerst, 81, of Wapello, was welcomed into Heaven by his wife, Judy, on Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2019, at the Klein Center in West Burlington. The son of Eugene ‘Ted’ and Sarah Irene Pontzius Gerst, he was born on May 12, 1937 in Louisa County. Ernie married Judith Faye ‘Judy’ Malcom on November 14, 1957 in Oakville. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2012.

Ernie graduated from Oakville High School in 1955. He was a farmer in Oakville for many years before driving a semi for Oakville Feed & Grain. He then worked for the Louisa County Conservation and drove the school bus for the Wapello Community School.

He had been a member of the former Lions Club in Oakville. He enjoyed mowing, and earlier with Judy, they enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, and just going places. Ernie was an avid Cardinal fan and Hawkeye fan.

His family includes four sons, Michael (Kay) Gerst of Wayland, Kirk (Judy) Gerst and Keith (Michelle) Gerst both of Wapello, and Ted (Krista) Gerst of Wheatland, Missouri; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; his brother, Kenny (Carol) Gerst of Wapello; his sister, Charlotte (Marion) Brown of Eldridge; and a special neighbor, Bev Stephens. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Judy.

The funeral ceremony for Ernie Gerst will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Pastor Steven Parker officiating.

The family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

Cremation will be fulfilled following the funeral.

Ralph V. Kemp, 80, of Burlington, died at 11:14 PM Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 9, 1938, in Terre Haute Township, IL, he was the son of Laverne B. and Mary Elizabeth Flood Kemp. On August 18, 1957, he married Sheron L. Thacker.

Ralph began his career at Lehigh Leopold Furniture and later worked for Midwest Biscuit Co., which became Shearer’s. He worked there for 30 years.

He graduated from Gladstone-Oquawka High School.

Ralph enjoyed going to auctions and races. He collected Carnival Glass, Budweiser and German Steins. He enjoyed working in the yard and gardening. He was a Fighting Illini fan. Ralph loved his job and considered everyone at work part of his family and was affectionately known as “grandpa” . He was a friend to everyone and was always there whenever someone needed him.

Survivors include his wife, Sheron; three daughters, Terri (Mike Overhake) Goble of Burlington, Sherri (Tim) Peterson of WI, and Brenda Boyd of Burlington; eight grandchildren: Jason, Danielle (Sean), Jenilee (Rich), Derek (Marlis), Tyler (Ashley), Justin (Bethany), Brittney, and Brandon (Adrian); eleven great-grandchildren and one on the way; two sisters, Linda Magnuson of Good Hope, IL, Mary Jo (Larry) Postin of Ellisville, IL; half-sister, Janet (Bill) Sly of Grand Ridge, IL; and half-brother, Wendell (Diane Carrier) Covert of Canton, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother and father, brother, two brothers-in-law and his mother-in-law and father in-law.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Gary Allen Burden, age 75, of Morning Sun, died with his family surrounding him, Wednesday evening, January 9, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. The son of Floyd and Hazel Schweitzer Burden, he was born on March 13, 1943 in South English, Iowa. Gary was married to Linda Holt. On December 17, 1994, he married Cathy King Barker in Morning Sun.

He served in the Iowa National Guard. As a member of the Local 150 Operating Engineers he worked as a crane operator with J & J Steel.

Gary was a member of the Allen Wright Hanft Post 100 American Legion in Columbus Junction, the Columbus Junction Masonic Lodge, and the KAABA Shriners. He enjoyed his John Deere tractors, tractor rides, farming, gardening, camping, fishing, boating, crossword puzzles, and simply being with his family.

His family includes his wife, Cathy; his children, Kelly (Kurt) Hand of Crown Point, Indiana, Melissa Meyer of New London, Amanda Kula of Mt. Pleasant, Shelly Kerr of Iowa City, Shelly (Jamie) Cromer of Wapello, Tom Barker of Wapello, and Stephanie (Mike) Coleman of Oxford; twelve grandchildren; one great grandson; a brother, Kenny (Betty) Burden of New London; and a sister, Jean Roth of Mt. Pleasant. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson; and five brothers, Lowell, Bob, Dick, Jack, and Bill.

Marcella Hardy Reed Ketcham, 83, of LaHarpe, IL died at 1:30am Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, IL.

She was born July 4, 1935 in Wayland, MO. She married C. Keith Reed on November 20, 1970. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1995. On February 14, 1997 she married Richard Ketcham in Dallas City, IL.
Marcella graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo in 1951. She received her Bachelors degree in 1965 and her Master’s Degree in 1985 from WIU.

Her teaching career began in Lomax, IL in 1958. She finished her 35 year career in 1994 at Dallas City Elementary School, touching the lives of hundreds of 2nd and 3rd graders. She was loved by all. She spent the next few years caring for her grandson, Garett. Marcella was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the church’s Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed playing bridge for 40 years, walking around LaHarpe, reading, cross stitch, knitting, quilting and puzzles. She also served on the board of the LaHarpe Carnegie Library.

She is survived by her husband, Richard, one daughter, Jean (Noel) Carden of Dallas City, grandson, Garett Worley, granddaughter, Erica Stewart and three great-grandchildren, all of Dallas City, nine step-children, Steve Ketcham, Colchester, IL, Steph (Fred) Doyle of Warsaw, IL, Andy (Vic) Schelin, Riverdale, IA, Kathy (the late Jim) Ketcham of Danville, IA, Janelle (Mehrdad) Yassan of Grand Prairie, TX, Angela (Mike) Pollock of LaHarpe, Robert (Heather) Ketcham of Dunlap, IL, Randy (Mary) Reed and their son, Dr. Loren Reed and Sheryl (Harry) Baker and their daughter, Meagan Orantes, 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one sister, Bernadette Hardy Brooks, two brothers, Paul and Ralph Hardy and her “2nd” mother, Eleanor Hudson. Also surviving are special nieces, Linda Brooks Housewright, Lila Brooks-Fritz, Julie Brooks Dombo and Jennifer Brooks Edholm and special nephews, Joseph Dean Brooks and James Daniel Brooks.

Marcella was preceded in death by her first husband, Keith, her mother, Clementine Hardy, step-son, Jim Ketcham and nephew, John Robert Brooks.

James Howard Small, MD passed away on Saturday January 19 at the age of 81 after battling cancer.

Born May 19, 1937 in Stratford, Ontario, he was the first child of Norman and Jessie (Hendershott) Small. Jim married Diana Louise McLennan in August, 1959. He graduated from Queens University Medical School in Kingston, Ontario in 1962. Jim did his general residency at the Royal Victoria hospital in Montreal, Quebec followed by his radiology residency in Orillia, Ontario.

Jim practiced radiology in Orillia, Ontario and Burlington, Iowa and the surrounding area for more than 45 years. He was very active in the medical community being a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, a member of the American College of Radiology, the American Board of Radiology, and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. In 2004, Jim was awarded the gold medal by the Iowa Radiological Society. He was known for his dedication to his profession and his family.

He loved the outdoors, had a great sense of adventure, and an infectious laugh. An avid reader and inquisitive mind, he enjoyed the thrust and parry of vigorous debate and was never shy to assert his opinion. He was known for his piercing blue eyes, his love of cattle and horses, road trips, pie making and family gatherings. He and Diana travelled extensively and enjoyed seeing the wonders of the world. Jim continued to travel, particularly favoring Italy for historic and gastronomic tours and Blues cruises for his love of music and to have a bit of warm winter sun. His love of music led him to volunteer with the Southeast Iowa Symphony. His wonder and joy for life will be sorely missed, as will his guidance and love.

Jim is survived by his son, Stephen Small (Louise) of Kansas City, daughter Suzanne Small (Baker Vail) of Connecticut, daughter Diana Small (Doug Dickson) of Chicago and Patricia Small of Detroit; five grandchildren: Jackson Small, Vojislav Ogarevic, Lazar Ogarevic, Abigail Ogarevic and Nathan Dickson; one sister Mary MacKinnon of Ottawa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Diana, son Andrew McLennan Small, and sister Corinne Matte.

There will be a visitation from 5-7 at Prugh Funeral Home at 317 N. 4th Street on Friday, February 8th, 2019. A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church at 1 pm on Saturday, February 9th, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Small family home, 1017 North 4th Street.

Memorials may be directed to the Great River Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Connie Allen Housman, 64, New London, died, January 22, 2019 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.

Mallery RaeAnn Doak, 23, of Burlington, died at 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 15, 1995, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Raymond Jay Doak and Karla Jean (David) Tarwater.

Mallery loved animals and going out on the river. She was a wonderful daughter, who was funny and loved to tease. Mallery’s family was very important to her and she loved to spend time with her siblings and cousins. Her daughters were her most prized and loved possession.

Survivors include her parents; two daughters, Brooklinn and Addisin; sisters, Molly (Kiano) Cooper, and Kendalyn DaVolt; brothers, Julian DaVolt, and Tavian DaVolt; grandmothers, Pat Doak and Patty (Dan) Broeg; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Jonathon Cooper; her grandfathers, Gary Doak and Glenn Polson, and one grandmother, Karen Peterson.

Laura Emily Pranger, 94, of Burlington, died at 10:10 AM Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

Born December 5, 1924, at her home in Augusta, she was the daughter of John William and Rosina Louise Bitsche Thele. Laura was the youngest of ten children to grow up on the farm in Augusta and Denmark. On October 18, 1947, she married Roy Edward Pranger in Augusta. He died July 25, 1990.

Laura worked at Sylvania Co., General Electric, and was an in-home daycare provider.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, D.A.V. Auxiliary, Navy Mothers, and a assistant at Shining Trail Girl Scouts. She was a volunteer for Human Services and volunteer driver taking patients to Iowa City. She enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, and bowling. She loved gardening, mushroom hunting, the Mississippi River, hunting and fishing at her cabin on the Skunk River. She traveled to Rome and Panama on a Canal Cruise.

Survivors include one son, Thomas W. Pranger of Harlingen, TX; one daughter, Annette L. Miller of New London; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Joan, two sons, Richard and Michael, four brothers and five sisters.

The family will receive friends following a 9:30 AM Rosary Service until 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Divine Mercy Parish – St. John the Baptist Church.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Pranger will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Dan Dorau as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Myrtle M. Strawser, 104, of West Burlington, died at 3:30 AM Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born December 15, 1914, in Blakesburg, IA, she was the daughter of Roy E. and Grace Allison Strawser.

She was one of the thirteen students that graduated from Numa High School in 1933.

Myrt worked in the warehouse of Benner Tea Co. and later worked for Burlington Medical Center in the Dietary Department, where she retired after 65 years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, and Eagles. Myrt enjoyed dancing the Waltz and Fox Trot, cats, birds, and all animals. Most of all she just enjoyed life.

Survivors include her half brother, George Strawser of Austin, TX; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Michael R. Brockett, 50 of Burlington, died Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Great River Medical Center.
Born February 15, 1968 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of David and Barbara Jean (Muller) Brockett and biological father, Wayne Durffee. He married Debra D. Malloy October 17, 1987. They later divorced. He married Connie Manning June 17, 1991. They divorced in 2000.
Michael currently worked at Harbor Freight. He previously worked as a welder, truck driver, at Ideal Concrete and Shipley Construction.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, singing karaoke, darts, pranking people, and playing with his dog Scooby. He loved his family, including grandchildren, had an extremely ornery personality and lived life to the fullest.
Survivors include three children, Samantha (Justin) Sommerfeld of Danville, IA, Neiko (Savannah) Brokett of Lomax, IL, Cheissia (Austin) Gee of Cedar Rapids, IA; six grandchildren, Axton and Marley Brockett, Mariska, Myah, and Makayha Malloy, and a grandson on the way; his father, Wayne Durffee of Land O’ Lakes, FL; sister, Debra (Harold “Joe”) Mondorf of La Harpe, IL, niece, Amber Curry of Burlington; nephew, Jason Belknap of Burlington; great nieces and nephews, Jaylynn Belknap, Marshall Belknap, and Peyton Mace; companion, Lori Skipton of Burlington; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and Scooby, his dog.
He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather.

Loren Edward Watson, 80, of Burlington, died at 12:40 AM Monday, January 21, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born May 15, 1938, he was the son of Edward Scott and Beulah E. Bailey Watson. On June 6, 1959, he married Shirley Hester at the Salem Friends Church.

He worked as a mechanic for the Hawkeye Motor Co., Arledge Motor Co., and retired from Shottenkirk GM Giant, Ft. Madison IA.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving overseas in Germany.

Loren was a quiet, reserved person and had incredible raw strength. He was a faithful worker, great handyman and could fix just about anything. He would always let his mom borrow his car. Loren was a master of many trades, loved camping, fishing and vacationing especially in Branson, MO, watching Westerns, MASH, and The Walton’s. He did not enjoy shopping. He was a fan of Dolly Parton and going to the Dixie Stampede, and seeing The Cajuns in the Silver Dollar City.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Burlington; daughter, Jeanette Watson of West Burlington; granddaughter, Katia Masterhan of Burlington; grandson, Scott Masterhan of Burlington; sister, Martha (Robert) Pratt of Salem; aunt, Imogene Dorsey of Mount Pleasant; sister-in-law, Bonnie Stotts of Morning Sun; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Oliver Goldsmith; grandparents; and brothers-in-law, Gene Stotts and David Hester.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, January 25, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Jill Arlene (Duttweiler) Blackwood passed away February 3, 2019 at home in Fort Myers, Florida surrounded by her family after a 3 year battle with breast cancer.

Born August 31, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Warren E. and Billie P. (Armson) Duttweiler. On August 25, 1968, she married Thomas W. Blackwood in Burlington.

Jill was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School. She attended Burlington Junior College where she earned her AA degree in 1967 and then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science at the University of Iowa in 1970.

During her career she was a teacher in the Burlington and Mediapolis, Iowa school districts as well as the Herlong, California district. She coached several sports in the area schools including the Burlington High School 1980 Iowa Girls Golf state championship team. She later went on to work at Sterzing’s alongside Tom. When they retired together in 2011 she was CFO.

Jill’s passion in life was for her family, golf and her community. She was involved with almost every activity her daughters were interested in throughout their school years and she and Tom never missed a sporting event or activity including earning her private pilot’s license in order to fly to Amy’s college volleyball games and golf meets. Jill’s golf accolades and involvement are extensive and include 2019 inductee to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, 2014 recipient of the George Turner Distinguished Service Award, over 30 years of volunteering with the Burlington Golf Club junior golf program, President of the Iowa Women’s Golf Association, volunteer director of the annual Wife-Husband Tournament for 13 years, the Iowa Women’s Amateur for 8 years, and the Iowa Senior Women’s Amateur for 4 years. Prior to being an accomplished golfer, Jill was an excellent tennis player including playing for the University of Iowa as the #1 singles and #1 doubles player.

She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the USA, was a Girl Scout troop leader from 1981 – 1992 and served on the Shining Trail Council of Girl Scouts board of directors from 1988 – 1994 in many roles including President. She served GSUSA as a National Operational Volunteer for many years traveling throughout the country training other volunteers and board of directors. Jill was awarded the first Women of Distinction award by the council in 2001 after receiving the Thanks Badge and Thanks Badge II.

Jill volunteered for and was a member of many organizations including the Burlington Area United Way, Burlington YMCA, Jennie Coulter Corporation, Burlington Athletic Booster Club, University of Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Advisory Council and the Norman Circle of Kings Daughters. Camp Lookout in Montrose Iowa was also a very special place.

Survivors include her husband Tom Blackwood of Ft. Myers, Florida, two daughters Julie (Matthew) Totten of Keokuk, Iowa and Amy (Kevin) Smith of Holland, Michigan, four grandchildren, Kingston Smith, Ethan Totten, Avery Totten and Abigail Smith; her sister Judy (John) Arledge of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, her mother-in-law Ruthe Blackwood of Burlington, Iowa, her sister-in-law Judy Toy of Hiawatha, Iowa and nephew David Toy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jill was preceded in death by her parents, her father-in-law Bill Blackwood, brother-in-law Kenneth Toy and son-in-law Andrew McDonough

Born October 25, 1939 in Burlington, he was the son of Charles Edgar and Edith Helen (Poggemiller) Friedel. He married Janice Kay Davis January 15, 1961 in Burlington. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2001.
Charles graduated from Burlington High School in 1957 and later, trade school for sheet metal work. He served in the United States Navy from June 9, 1958 until October 29, 1962 as a Signalman General stationed in Pearl Harbor. He was the owner of Charles Friedel & Sons Contracting, building many houses in the bottoms by Kingston. He was a commercial fisherman. Janice and Charles managed and operated The Zodiac in the early 1970’s. He was also employed at R.W. Cardella Mechanical Contractor as shop foreman in Keokuk, IA and various other shops in Des Moines County.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 91 for 59 years, retiring in November 2018. He belonged to the American Legion Post 586 in Sumner, MO, Sumner Sportsman Club, Friends of the Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and was a lifetime founding member of the D.W. Hunting Club of Triplett, MO.
Survivors include daughter, Gina R. (Miles) Erickson of rural Burlington; son, Mick (Teresa) Friedel of Mediapolis; grandsons, Justin and Matt Friedel of Mediapolis, Cole and Luke Erickson of rural Burlington; father-in-law, Floyd “Tode” John of Burlington; brother, Les Friedel of Burlington; significant other, Shirley Fountain of Sumner, MO; sister-in-law, Linda Friedel Muir of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Kenny Friedel; two sisters-in-law, Rita Friedel and Shirley Friedel.
The funeral service for Mr. Friedel will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2019 at Lunning Chapel. The Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 10th at Lunning Chapel.

Patrick William Mewes, 78, of West Burlington, died Sunday, February 3, 2019 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
Born October 3, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of Paul and Lena Louise (Patton) Mewes.
Patrick served as a police officer for the City of Burlington for 28 years, retiring in 1987. After his retirement he drove over the road for Shelman and Sons and drove a city bus until his final retirement at the age of 72.
He loved collecting old vintage die cast sprint racecar collectables and served as former president of the M.V.V.R.C.A. He enjoyed dirt track racing and hanging out with the “Smokin Aces”. He was well liked and never met a stranger.
Survivors include his daughter Tracy (Christopher) Nowlin of Gautier, Mississippi; two step grandchildren and one sister Mary Janney of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Scott and his life- long companion Chong Mathias.
A celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9th at the Burlington Gym. Mr. Ned Fry will officiate. A memorial has been established.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Janet M. Mayo, 73, of Burlington, died Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
Born June 9, 1945 in Keosauqua, IA, she was the daughter of Earl and Bernita (Rose) Siverly. She married Don Mayo on September 9, 1978 at Aldersgate Chapel in Burlington, Iowa.
Janet attended grade school in Bonaparte and graduated from Harmony High School in 1963. She loved playing basketball for Harmony. Janet was proud to be one of two women that were hired at Murray Ironworks. She worked as a client supervisor for Hope Haven until her retirement in 2004.
She attended Asbury United Methodist Church.
Janet enjoyed sewing and knitting. She could make anything. She was known to her friends and family as a master crafter. She was also an avid Hawkeyes fan.
Survivors include her husband of forty years, Don; two daughters, Jolene Paton of Lawrenceville, GA and Jaclyn Karzon of Bethlehem, GA; a son, Shane Mayo of Atlanta, GA; two grandsons, Blake Caraballo and Luke Paton, both of Lawrenceville, GA; two sisters, Judy Dee of Waukon, IA and Marlis Siverly of Portland, OR; her dog, Missy Mae; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 22nd at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Elizabeth Bell will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service. According to Janet’s wishes cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

Bradley Thomas Houston , 62, of Burlington, died at 11:58 PM Monday, February 18, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born September 8, 1956, he was the son of Clifford Russell and Wanda Wheeler Houston.

Bradley worked at Southeastern Community College in the STEP Program as an associate instructor.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving for 17 years.

Bradley enjoyed sports and was a Hawkeyes, Cowboys and Cardinals fan. He loved to watch “The Big Bang Theory”, do Sudoku and crossword puzzles and to collect baseball cards. He was a very proficient individual.

Survivors include his mother, Wanda of Burlington; brothers: Russell Houston of Burlington, and Matthew (Christine) Houston of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; son, Andrew Houston of Columbus, OH; daughter, Julie Houston of Columbus, OH; fiancée, Lisa Wells of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Mary Margaret Simpson, 83, of Burlington, died at 7:25 AM Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born October 10, 1935, in Bethany, MO, she was the daughter of Clarence Alton and Lottie Aliena Reynolds Stevens. On December 11, 1953, she married Harry Lee Simpson in Knoxville, IA. Harry passed away on August 17, 1970.

Mary worked for Marriott Food Service at Bankers Life & Principal Finance for 30 years.

She was a graduate of Fort Dodge High School.

Mary was active with children’s ministry at Capitol City Baptist and after that was an active member at New Testament Baptist. She retired in 1999, moved to Burlington and became active at Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Walter Lee Simpson of Charleston, WV; two brothers, Pastor Charles Walter Stevens of Fort Madison and Pastor Robert Lee Stevens of Sherbrooke, QC, Canada; one grandson; Michael Simpson of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, February 25, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Barbara Kay Kimmel , 79, of West Burlington, died at 6:12 am Thursday, February 14, 2019, at the Burlington Care Center.

Born April 3, 1939, she was the daughter of Margaret Landers Kemp and (step-father) Rawson “Bill” Kemp. On October 8, 1961, she married George in Christian Church in Lomax, IL.

Barbara worked at Champion Spark Plug for 33 1/2 years before retiring.

She was a 1957 graduate from Stronghurst High School.

Barbara loved horses and would ride show horses until she couldn’t get her feet in the stirrups anymore. When she couldn’t ride anymore, she kept raising and training them. She also loved dogs; mainly Dobermans, cooking, hosting all the holiday meals, fitness and family. Barbara loved George most of all. People would say that they were the model for love.

Survivors include husband, George Kimmel, nephew, Tony (Deb) Mattson of Oskaloosa, niece, Paula (Andy) Morrell of Bull Head City, AZ and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Edger Paul Mattson Jr.

Sammy Lorraine (Wallace) Blender, 83, of Raritan, Illinois, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. She was born September 5, 1935 in Raritan, the daughter of Leo and Martha (Walker) Wallace. On June 20, 1954, she married James Blender in the Raritan Baptist Church.

Mrs. Blender was a 1953 graduate of Media-Wever High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Monmouth College in 1970. She taught for twenty five years in the Burlington, Iowa school system, teaching the majority of time at Apollo and Oak Street Schools. She served as Raritan village trustee for over thirty years, and was a member of the Stronghurst Senior Citizens and the Raritan Firemen’s Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of the Raritan Baptist Church, where she served as moderator, Sunday school teacher, and in numerous other capacities. She was also a member of the King’s Daughters Association of the church.

Sammy enjoyed traveling, baking pies for her family, playing dominoes, cards and games, and mowing the grass, when she was able. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she loved unconditionally.

Survivors include her husband of sixty four years, one daughter, Jodi (Dave) Purlee of Mt. Carroll, IL, one son, Jay (Rhonda) Blender of Raritan, five grandchildren, Rob (Jenna) Purlee, Janel (Ryan) Bast, Kelly Purlee, Brandy (Tanner) Bigger, and Brent Blender, five great grandchildren, Carson and Kate Purlee, and Sami, Max, and Drew Bast, one sister, Ruth (Orlin) Olsen of Raritan, IL, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one great granddaughter, Aubrey Bigger, two sisters, Wanda Denton and Babe Stull, and two brothers, LeRoy and Jolly Wallace.

Mr. John Wayne Fisher, 81, of Dallas City, IL died at 5:15AM Saturday, March 2, 2019 at his home.
He was born August 4, 1937 in Vandalia, MO, the son of Harold and Laura Mae Fisher.
John grew up and attended school in Vandalia, Mo. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 45 years, retiring as an engineer. He also farmed near Pontoosuc, IL. He was an antique car and tractor enthusiast, enjoyed collecting coins and loved to go mushrooming.
Surviving are two sons, Donald (Mary Ann Purvis) Fisher of Lomax, IL and David (Clara Hnap) Fisher of Fort Madison, IA, three daughters, Darla Susi Fisher of Niota, IL, Niki (Eric Christenson) Fisher of Tucson, AZ and Johnna Jayne Fisher of Dallas City, six grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Jim Fisher of Washington state and one sister, Judy Neimeyer of Jacksonville, IL.

Betty Jane Rosenow, 85, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away at 8:05 a.m. Saturday March 2, 2019 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst. She was born June 27, 1933 in Carman, Illinois, the daughter of Myron and Garnett (Hehr) Waddell.

Betty was a licensed practical nurse and worked at Burlington Care Center for many years, retiring in 2000. After retirement, she worked at Casey’s Convenience Store in Burlington for four years. She loved to cross-stitch, play bingo, and was an avid collector of “Betty Boop” memorabilia.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy (Keith) Hancock of Media, IL, two grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Linda Sue Peavey, one grandson, Henry Edward “Jack” Forquer Jr, and eight brothers and sisters.

Nancy Lou Moore, 73, of Burlington, died at 12:44 AM Saturday, March 2, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 15, 1945, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Maurice and Adra Harrison Shipley. On August 1, 1964, she married Henry J. Moore in Burlington; he passed March 31, 1987.

Nancy was a homemaker. She also worked as a bar tender for The Dugout, Hot Toddies, and The Broadway.

Nancy enjoyed quilting, crafts, gardening, cooking and jewelry. She also enjoyed taking road trips, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with her family.

Gloria G. Ringblum-Runyon, 92, of Burlington, died at 1:08 PM Thursday, February 28, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 15, 1926, in Mediapolis, she was the daughter of Paul W. and Frances Sorber Jones. In May 1946, she married Charles Ringblum and they later divorced, he passed away on February 9, 1975. In August 1966, she married William Runyon. He passed away on February 13, 2013.

Gloria was mainly a homemaker, but she also worked at the Burlington Golf Club and in the late 1940’s she worked at the I.A.A.P.

She was a New London High School graduate.

Gloria enjoyed crocheting, gardening and feeding birds. She loved snuggling babies and attending grandchildren’s activities and family parties.

Survivors include three sons, Jay Ringblum, Ronald Ringblum and Damon Runyon all of Burlington; two daughters, Vicky (Russ) Hull and Robin (Bob) Ghrist both of Burlington; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie Davis of Davenport; eight nieces and nephews; pet bird “Sunny”.

Besides both her former husbands, Gloria was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Darlene Dumse-Lant and Goldie Cook.

The memorial service for Gloria will be 1:00 PM Friday, March 8, 2019, where the family will receive friends prior to the service at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Margie Joan (Hasten) Walker, 92, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe.

She was born on July 18, 1926 at the family home in Fountain Green Township the daughter of Carl and Jessie McConnell Hasten.
Margie attended eight years of grade school at Eagle School and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1944. She worked at Sheaffer Pen Company in Ft. Madison, Iowa from 1944 until 1947 and IAAP in Burlington, Iowa for seven years.

She married Lee Walker on August 23, 1947 in Carthage, IL. Lee preceded her in death on May 15, 2004. Together they had six children.

Mrs. Walker was a member of the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church, Club 16 and Senior Citizens Center in LaHarpe. Over the years Margie served on several of the church boards including Elders, Trustees and Deacons. She was a Sunday School Teacher in several different classes and assisted with Bible School for many years.

She loved her family and friends and has made a positive influence on so many people. Her strong Christian Faith has been witnessed by all who knew her.

Survivors include, two children, Carlene (Marshall) Adams of Little Swan Lake, Illinois, and Rick (Kim) Walker of Flanagan, Illinois, one daughter-in-law, Barb Walker of LaHarpe, one son-in-law, Dennis Castlebury of Plymouth, Illinois, nine grandchildren, Robbie, Ryan, Ronald, Jerod and Jason Walker, Carlee, Jacy, and Denna Castlebury and multiple great-grandchildren, as well as, many cousins, nieces and nephews. She loved them all!

Mrs. Walker was preceded in death three sons, Ronnie, Randy and Michael Shawn Walker, one daughter, Dixie Castlebury, four brothers, Lyman, Carl Jr., Jim and Bill Hasten and two sisters, Jean Blumer and Christine DeHaven.

Sandra Nelson, 76, of Burlington died Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at home.
Born November 2, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of William and Mildred (Brandenburg) House. She married Gary R. Nelson on December 10, 1940 in Burlington. He died December 4, 2005.
Sandra worked in production for I.A.A.P. for many years until her retirement in 2002.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting and loved spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids.
Survivors include one son Glenn (Denise) Nelson of Burlington; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, James House of Burlington; one sister, Pat Archer of Wataga, IL; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Shelley; one brother, William; brother-in-law, Don Archer; and one niece, Terri.
The graveside funeral service and interment for Mrs. Nelson will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 18th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Pastor Mark Schowalter will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the graveside service on Monday at Lunning Chapel.

Jacob Lee Fugate, 28, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born May 15, 1990, in Fort Smith, AR, he was the son of Kendall Fugate and Angie Lipcaman.

He worked in production at Borghi.

He attended West Burlington High School.

Jacob enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He loved to make people laugh, had a peacemaker attitude and was a straightforward person. He loved the LA Lakers, especially Kobe Bryant, and the Oakland Raiders.

Survivors include his mother, Angie, of Mount Sterling, IL; father, Kendall, of West Burlington; one brother, Jeremy Fugate of Keokuk; three sisters, Jessica Fugate of Palmetto, LA, Dawn (Dallas) Lewis of Keokuk, and Melissa (Matthew) Menefee of Billings, MT; many dear nieces and nephews and several aunts and uncles; maternal grandmother, Yvonne Swan of Mount Sterling, IL; and paternal grandmother, Bonnie Fugate of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandfathers, one uncle and two aunts.

Thomas L. Myers, 59, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away Sunday March 10, 2019 at Unity Point Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois. He was born June 22, 1959 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Robert and Evelyn White Myers.

Tom was a graduate of Southern High School in Stronghurst and Southeastern Community College of Nursing in West Burlington, Iowa. He worked as a registered nurse for Grady Memorial in Atlanta, Georgia for many years and later retired from East Side Medical Center in Snellville, Georgia. He moved back to Stronghurst in April of 2018. He enjoyed animals and bird watching.

Survivors include one brother, Rod (Laurie) Myers of LaHarpe, IL, one sister, Ramona (Bernie) Kremer of Louisville, KY, one sister in law, Angela Myers of Stronghurst, his special friend, Sheila Martin of Stronghurst, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Shirley Myers, and one brother, Terry Myers.

Born December 31, 1948 in La Port, IN, he was the son of Joseph and Bernitha (Huffman) Klinedinst. He married Karen Byers on April 12, 1969 in Wauseon, OH.
David graduated from Swanton High School in 1967. He resided in Delta, OH for 21 years and later Mediapolis, IA for 28 years. He worked as a machinist for Federal Mogul for 32 years and then as a para-educator at West Burlington Elementary School for 5 years before officially retiring in 2015.
He had a strong Christian faith. He loved spending time with his family. He was always a great servant of others and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, telling stories, and was known to be quite a jokester.
Survivors include wife Karen; daughter, Jody (Jeff) Camp of Newark, OH; two sons, Matt (Christine) Klinedinst of Colorado Springs, CO and Mark (Kim) Klinedinst of North Liberty, IA; nine grandchildren, Brody Camp, Briley Camp, Talon Long, Peyton Long, Paige Klinedinst, Jenna Klinedinst, Heather Slaughter, Kaleb Williams, and Wyatt Williams; one great-grandchild, Elizabeth; brother, Brent (Tina) Klinedinst;, and nephews, Brent Allen Klinedinst and David Klinedinst.
He was preceded in death by grandson, Caleb Camp; parents; sister, Grace Ashbaugh; and father-in-law, Vern Byers.
The memorial service for Mr. Klinedinst will be 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 15th at Lunning Chapel. Jeff Camp will officiate. According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel. Visitation will be 5:30 until the time of service.

Spencer Honsey, 89, of Burlington, died at 6:45 PM Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 5, 1930, in Lake Mills, IA, he was the son of Selmer Oliver and Ingeborg Theoline Knutson Honsey. On August 3, 1952, he married Lorraine Olena Gesme in Minnesota. Lorraine passed away in 1995. On June 29, 1996, he married Mary Evelyn Mahoney in Burlington.

Spencer was the owner of Spencer’s Service Station.

He graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1947.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from November of 1951 until 1953 as a CPL in the 40th Infantry.

Spencer was a member, council member and treasurer of Bethany Lutheran Church; he was also a member of F.O.E. #150 and American Legion. He was a board member for Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County for 52 years. He loved spending time with family and friends and had a passion for collecting Petroleum memorabilia.

Survivors include wife, Mary Evelyn Honsey of Burlington, two sons, Scott (Julie) Honsey of Des Moines and Jon (Sue) Honsey of Davenport; two daughters, Susan (Bob) Lagneaux of Polk City and Carolyn (Ron) Phillips of Burlington; one step-son, John (Melinda) Fuller of Maryland Heights, MO; two step-daughters, Candice (Dale) Travis of Maryland Heights, MO and Jana (Kyle) Morgan of West Des Moines; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harris (LeAnn) Honsey of Lake Mills, IA; three sisters, Dolores Fredericks of Scottsdale, AZ, Mayvis Johnson of North Wood, IA and Beverly (Maynard) Bidne of Emmons, MN; one sister-in-law, Berdine Honsey.

Besides his parents, Spencer was preceded in death by his first wife, one daughter, Christine Honsey, two brothers, Clinton and Homer, and two sisters, Palma Bendickson and Stella Larson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, March 18, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The memorial service for Spencer will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Hermansen officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at Bethany Lutheran Church. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church following the military honors. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Arthur Ritchey Adkisson, Jr., 73, of Nauvoo, Illinois passed away Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.
Arthur was born on March 26, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa the son of Arthur R. and Ruth Buelow Adkisson, Sr. On July 30, 1966 he married Dianne Wood at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo. She survives.
Mr. Adkisson was a graduate of the Warsaw High School, Warsaw, Illinois. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 – 1969 serving on a USS Destroyer. He received his Bachelors Degree from Western Illinois University. Art began his teaching career in Colusa, Illinois and finished his 33 year career at the Nauvoo-Colusa Elementary School. When Art wasn’t teaching he enjoyed helping local carpenters. Mr. Adkisson was a member of the Nauvoo American Legion where he served as an adjutant and was a charter member of the Nauvoo Jaycees.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne, one daughter, Brenda Adkisson of Nauvoo, one son, Lance (Shawna) Adkisson of LaHarpe, Illinois, two grandchildren, Abby (Braden) Shull and Brady Adkisson and two sisters, Susan Pryor of Lathrop, Missouri and Linda (Bob) Kiser of Gainesville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joan M. Ryals, 83, of Burlington, died at 3:41 PM Thursday, April 11, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 3, 1936, in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Lee and Irene Kelley.

She graduated from Ottumwa High School then continued her studies at Southeastern Community College.

Joan worked at Exide Batteries for 28 years where she met her best friend Cheryl Brobston.

Joan enjoyed cooking, traveling, going to the rodeo and dancing. She was a member of West Hill Methodist Church, Eastern Star and White Shrine. Joan loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen (Larry) Whitmore and Linda (John) Clark both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her two husbands, Paul Ryals and Cecil Davis, her significant other, Ernesto Puente, one sister, Joyce, and two grandsons, Chad and Eric Whitmore.

Rusty Anthony Maddox, 54 of West Burlington, died Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Born July 5, 1964 in Burlington, he is the son of Albert Allen and Vicki Lee (Giles) Maddox Jr.
He attended Burlington High School.
Rusty worked in construction, for various farmers, and in production for Riley’s Paint Company.
He was of the Christian faith.
He was a great outdoorsman. He loved nature. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and all outdoor adventure. Rusty enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his beloved grandchildren. His favorite pastime was baking cookies and sweets for the neighborhood children and friends. He was also known to be a little ornery on occasion.
Survivors include his fiancée, Amber Hand of West Burlington; two sons, Christopher West of Stronghurst, IL and Tyler Maddox of Kansas City, KS; his mother, Vicki Lee Maddox of Burlington; three siblings, Robert A. (Kimberley) Maddox of Las Vegas, NV, Robin A. Maddox of Cape Canaveral, FL, and Rochelle A. Maddox of Walker, LA; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Willis Lowell “JR” Kirk Jr., 54, of Burlington, died at 4:15 PM, Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Great River Medical Center.

Born November 1, 1964, in Oskaloosa, IA, he was the son of Willis L. and Patricia Sirovy Kirk. On August 5, 1994, he married Ann Marie Mesler in Oskaloosa, IA.

JR had held a variety of jobs including meat cutting, bouncer, manufacturing, and glass cutting.

He was a 1983 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and graduated from Southeastern Community College in 2004 with an A.S. in Web Design.

He enjoyed his family, pets, sports, and good humor.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; one daughter, Janette Yenchko of West Burlington; three grandchildren, Evelyn Marie, Claire Marie, and Logan James Yenchko; three sisters, Lorraine Kirk of Burlington, Patricia Kirk (Lennie Thompson) of Ankeny, IA, and Georgina (Terry) Gott of Oskaloosa, IA; very special family friend, Tina Musgrove; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Irene Heyland, 93, of Des Moines died on April, 10th, 2019 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa.

Born November 11, 1925 in West Point, Irene was a child of the depression and she carried those lessons throughout her life. She was the daughter of Adam and Mary Mueller also of St. Paul, IA.

She married John A. Link, Jr. on July 2nd, 1946 upon his return from active duty in the U.S. Navy in WWII. Together they had three children, Joyce married to Frank Kempker of Urbandale, Iowa, Judy, married to Jim McPartland of Brisbane, Australia and Jeff Link of Des Moines, Iowa. Irene and John bought a farm in 1960 and built a house for their young family. John Link died suddenly in 1967.

On October 19, 1970, Irene married Frank Heyland and moved to Burlington, IA. Irene and Frank raised his four surviving sons, Michael of Jamaica, Iowa, Richard of Weaver, Steven of Burlington, Iowa and Jon of Ft. Madison, Iowa.

Irene was an active member of St. Paul’s parish for decades taking pride in the annual bake sale and her special contribution of anise cookies. She was an avid bowler and was awarded Bowler of the Year in 2012. She was a long-time officer in the Burlington chapter of the National Association Railway and Veteran Employees including several years as its president. Irene was also a lifelong member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in West Point, IA.

She was a generous mother and grandmother giving her time and talents to making quilts, customizing sweatshirts and innumerable plastic canvass creations for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She loved walking in Crapo Park, Hawkeye basketball, playing Phase 10, Big Joe’s Polka Show and Wheel of Fortune.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, April 15 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Heyland will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 16 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Very Re. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Calgary Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the fellowship hall of St. Paul’s Catholic Church following the service.

Janet Jeanette Dobbs, 85, of Burlington, died at 7:21 am Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born February 9, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph and Bernice Wiley Losey.

Janet worked for Great River Kline Center for 20 years. She also worked for Northwestern Bell for four years and St. Francis Hospital for ten years.

Janet was a member of Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed going to garage sales, riding in the car with her family, turtle hunting, listening to country gospel music and vegetable gardening. Janet always said that vegetable gardening was her way of believing in tomorrow.

Mrs. Penny Kay Brewer, 76, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

She was born on May 28, 1942 in LaHarpe the daughter of Owen and Louise Dunn Collins. In 1958 she married Gary Woodside. He preceded her death in 1961. On April 3, 1975 she married Ronald Brewer at the LaHarpe United Methodist Church. He survives.

Penny worked in the dietary department at the Memorial Hospital, Carthage and also as a secretary at the Haeger Lamp Company, Macomb. Mrs. Brewer was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She enjoyed playing Bingo, watching game shows and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald, one daughter, Karri (Adam) Wallace of LaHarpe, one son, Joe Woodside of Tennesse, her mother, Louise Collins of LaHarpe and three grandchildren, Bryce Marsden, Myah Wallace and April Settles.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, two sons, Ronald Gregory Brewer and Jerome Woodside, her father, and one brother, Jerry Collins.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Nate McCarter officiating. Marcella Ann Whitham, age 82 of Mediapolis, died Tuesday April 16, 2019 at Prairie Ridge Care Center. The daughter of Arthur Lee and Armeda (Wills) Dameron, she was born August 26, 1936 at Burlington. On August 28, 1955 she married Kenneth Whitham at Burlington; he died November 25, 2013.
In earlier years she worked at various factories, and for the past 22 years she worked at the Apron Strings in Mediapolis.

Born February 22, 1972, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Marvin and Joann Schlag Marshall.

I, Jennifer Marshall Diewold, would like to take this time to thank you for the opportunity that I had to touch each of the lives of the people I met. I loved each and every one of my siblings, spouses and their children in my own individual way. My life mission was to always help as many people as I could. I had a very selfless approach on life. I wanted to believe that I was a very giving person and I always wanted to be someone’s sunshine on a rainy day. I loved everyone unconditionally and I definitely thought I could change the world one little thing at a time. I would like to think that I positively influenced the lives of people I met and interacted with. I loved everyone. Peace and love and don’t forget to hug a tree.

Janice K. Goins, 82, of West Burlington, died Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born August 7, 1936 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Kenny and Mildred K. (Bright) Lindgren. She married John Goins on November 23, 1964. He died May 11, 1982.
Janice worked for many years in housekeeping for the Holiday Inn and Pzazz hotels.
She loved collecting porcelain dolls and being outside doing yardwork. Her family and especially her grandkids were her life to the end.
Survivors include her five children; Johnnie Goins of West Burlington, Linda (Mohammed) Mammeri of New York City, NY, Theresa Bolin of West Burlington, Ron Lafferty of Burlington and daughter Susan; 16 grandchildren, Veronika (Robert) Young, Jonathan (Janelle) Lang, Justin (Amanda) Keever, Trey (Erika) Keever, Bradley Bolin, Brandon Bolin, Brandie Bolin and Nathan Goins; 32 great grandchildren, Shantel Schneiderman, Leland Faidley, Abigail Faidley, Rhet Faidley, Alexander Lang, Jacob Lang, Alyssa Lang and Preston Lang.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Robbie Lafferty, two brothers Richard Lindgren and Gary Lindgren and two great grandchildren.

Jeremy Lefler
Born October 4, 1977, in Cheyenne Wyoming, he was the son of Patricia Jo Guzman and Roger Wendell Lefler.

Jeremy worked as a bartender at the Stonegate Lounge and at the Burlington Golf Club.

Jeremy was full of life and had a happy spirit, always willing to help someone in need and he loved everybody and everybody loved him. He was also a prankster and full of jokes. Jeremy loved the outdoors, having bonfires and lighting fireworks. Most of all, Jeremy loved spending time with his family and friends especially his two children.

Survivors include his parents; two children, Jakson and Elayna Lefler; best friend and mother of his children, Christy Hofstetter of Burlington; one brother, Aaron Lefler and Michele Beard both of Burlington; two half-sisters, Carla Dickey of Florida and Whitney Lefler of Illinois, two half-brothers, Kai Lefler and Nathan Lefler both of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Jeremy was preceded in death by his cousins, Jamie Guzman, Jacob Frerichs, Matthew Duffie and Christopher Penrod.

Mr. Steven L. Anderson, 69, a 30 year resident of Hope Haven Surrey Home, died Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Born November 11, 1949 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Carl E. and Alice L. (Whitmore) Anderson.
Steven worked as a can sorter for Hope Haven. He was involved in Boy Scouts. He competed in the Special Olympics in Des Moines, IA. He enjoyed driving the tractor, wrestling, bowling, and watching the animals and birds at Surrey Home. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Dallas Cowboys and cheerleaders fan.
Survivors include two brothers, Dennis E. (Alva) Anderson of Burlington and Terry L. (Trish) Anderson of Orlando, FL; three sisters, Debbie Hughes of Lone Tree, IA, Vickie (Rick) Nebel of Wayland, IA, and Carol Costlow of Fountain, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and one brother, Wayne.
The graveside celebration of life for Mr. Anderson will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25th in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner will officiate.

Melvin DeLang, 87, of Burlington, died peacefully April 25, 2019.

Mel was born May 17, 1931 in Burlington, Iowa to Ira and Helen. He graduated from Burlington high school, attended Burlington Community College, and served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He married Joyce Funkhouser in 1952. They had four children together and later divorced. He worked at the Iowa Army
Ammunition Plant, DeLang Florists, and Prudential Insurance Co.
Mel married Cathleen (Cay) Meyer in 1980. Together they purchased the Iowa Tavern which became their life’s work until they retired in 2004.

Mel is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cay; four children Jade DeLang Hart (Brad), Gwen DeLang Jennison (Jeff), Drake DeLang (Kathy), and Drew DeLang (Becky); six grandchildren Alison Wetmore (Tom), William Hart, Jay Jennison, Dana, Guy, and Brayton DeLang; and two great grandchildren Jimmy and Grace Wetmore; a sister Patsy Martinson; nephews Terry, Gene, and Greg Martinson and a niece Renee Cudworth along with his many hunting buddies and their good friends from the Iowa Tavern. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Lee Martinson.

Those who knew Mel will remember him as an avid hunter (the 1963 World’s Champion Duck Caller) and a lover of the great outdoors, especially along the Mississippi. He shared that love with his kids, and many friends, young and old, who he took along on hunts and into the woods. We smile knowing he’s now in the Happy Hunting Grounds with his beloved labs—Stock, Deke, Zeb, Ben, and Kramer—at his side, the wind out of the northwest, working a flock of mallards.

The family would like to especially thank the compassionate staff at Ridge View Assisted Living who cared for Mel in his final months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ducks Unlimited – Burlington chapter and the Burlington Special Needs Foundation.

A memorial visitation will be held for Melvin on Sunday, April 28th, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home from 4:00PM until 6:00PM with the family receiving friends. The visitation will conclude with Military Honors.

Howard W. Degen, 66, of Burlington, died Friday, April 19, 2019 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL.
Born February 7, 1953 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Raymond William and Mellie L. (Lott) Degen.
Howard graduated from Wapello High School. He served in the United States Army stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War, driving a tank for border patrol between Germany and Czechoslovakia. He worked as a supervisor at I.A.A.P., Midwest Biscuit, J.I. Case Co., and metal working at Champion.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Howard enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and he loved his dogs.
Survivors include five children, Jacob (Jamie) Degen, Katie (Nate) Willeford, Jason Yacko, Tony Vanorder, and Haley Zart, all of Burlington; three sisters, Lois Hull of Hannibal, MO, Evelyn Beard of Winfield, IA, and Dorothy Bowers of Burlington; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three brothers-in-law; niece, Julie; nephew, Kevin; and great-nephew, Justin.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Degen will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27th at Lunning Chapel. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites.
Cremation has been accorded.

Marie Louise Carter, 84, of West Burlington, passed away at 12:55 PM Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born August 18, 1934, in Oakville, IA, she was the daughter of Arthur and Blanche Peterson. On July 12, 1953, she married Warren Carter in Burlington.
Marie held many jobs throughout her life. She worked as an accountant for a while, as programmer for NCR, and at Murray Iron Works for fifteen years. She also worked at Keystone for twelve years.
She was a 1952 graduate from Burlington High School.
Marie loved and enjoyed her family (and dogs) very much. She also enjoyed bird watching, fishing, crocheting and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Warren Carter of West Burlington, four sons, Ed (Dawn) Carter of Fort Madison, Robert (Kathy) Carter of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Philip Carter of West Burlington and Dennis (Susie) Carter of New London; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Marshal Peterson of Burlington, one sister, Arlene McCannon of Burlington and her beloved dog, Izzy.
Besides her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her two brothers, Richard and Leroy, and sister, Vi.
There will be a private family graveside service for Marie on Friday, April 26th at 3pm at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Timothy James Nichols, 55, of Carman, Illinois, died Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
Born December 28, 1963 in Burlington, he was the son of Jack and Sharon L. (Hand) Nichols Sr. He married Lisa Murphy in Burlington on May 25, 2002.
Tim attended Burlington High School. He worked as a fork lift driver for Industrial Service Corporation.
He enjoyed the river, hanging out with family and friends, playing horseshoes, and drinking beer. He was a St. Louis Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys fan.
Survivors include his wife Lisa; one son, Christian Michael Nichols; one stepson, Jason Rankin, both of Carman, Illinois; three grandchildren, Paul, Dylan, and Autumn; one brother, Jack Nichols Jr. of Burlington; two sisters, Cheryl Longshore of Burlington and Dianne Carlson (Rick Scholler) of Oakville, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Chris, Nick and Donnie; and his dog, Daisy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Jeff; sister, Sallie; and a nephew.
The memorial service for Mr. Nichols will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 5th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Casual attire is preferred by the family.

Randy Ray Frerichs, 68, of West Burlington, formerly of Davenport, died at 5:53 PM Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

Born October 25, 1950, in Burlington, he was raised by Irene Mildred Shafer Frerichs and Dale Conrad. On May 27, 1972, he married Barbara Guzman in Burlington. They later divorced.

Randy founded and operated R&B Transportation and Fastbreak Express.

He graduated from Burlington High School. He then graduated from Iowa State University with his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

Randy attended Harvest Bible Chapel in Davenport. He enjoyed sports; his favorite teams were the Lakers, Yankees and Northwestern and Iowa State Basketball. He was passionate about music and enjoyed playing the guitar. Throughout his life, he found great joy in helping others near and far.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Sarah (Tim) Riley of Eldridge, IA; son, Jackson (Jill) Frerichs of Davenport; grandchildren: Bella, Elliot, Greta, Parker, and Cormick; two nieces, Carole (Michael) Farber of Arizona and Kathy (John) Smith of West Burlington. He was also blessed with numerous extended family members and long lasting friendships.

He is preceded in death by his mother and Dale, his beloved son, Jacob Frerichs, one brother, Ronald Frerichs, and one sister-in-law, Bonnie Frerichs.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Carl Richard Shipman, 82, of Blandinsville, IL went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 9:20 a.m. The Elms Nursing Home in Macomb, IL.

Carl was born September 22, 1936, to Cecil & Margie Shipman at their home north of Webster, IL by Doc Kelly. He married Janet Thompson on May 5, 1963 at the 1st Baptist Church in Blandinsville, IL. Carl was a veteran of the US Army. He was a night-shift foreman at NTN Bower for over 30 years. Carl was well known as an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed life and had several hobbies including gardening, hunting and fishing with his sons and brothers, playing cards, camping with family and friends, and singing karaoke. He enjoyed all very much.

Carl is survived by his wife, Janet Shipman of Blandinsville, IL, two sons, Daniel (Nicole) Shipman, of Blandinsville, IL; Darren (Heather) Shipman of Gonzales, LA, one daughter, Lucinda Johnson (Don Carey) of Macomb, IL, 7 grandchildren: Nathan (Lacey) Shipman, Anthony Shipman, Nicholas Shipman, Lucas Shipman, Allyssa Johnson (Joe Gallagher), Alex Johnson (Heather Gonterman) and Ian Shipman and 4 great-grandchildren: Jaylee, Hope, Aiden and Jackson.

Carl was raised in a big, loving family with 3 brothers and 3 sisters: Mildred (Major) Lewis of Grayslake, IL; Cecil (Iola) Shipman of Ferris, IL; Clifford (Martha Jean) Shipman of Blandinsville, IL; Henry (Sonja) Shipman of Dallas City, IL; Shirley (Paul) Gorrell of Burlington, IA; and Carolyn (Vernon) Reed of Macon, MO. Although too many to mention, Carl also loved all of his nieces and nephews and had many good memories of family reunions and camping with his extended family at Spring Lake Park throughout the years.
Carl’s in-laws were his niece Angela Thomason, sister-in-law, Carolyn Strausbaugh and brother’s-in-law Larry and Donald Thompson.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Margie, three brothers-in-law’s; Marion Lewis, Vernon Reed and Donald Thompson and one sister-in-law, Martha Jean Shipman.

Carl never knew a stranger and couldn’t go anywhere without striking up a conversation with someone he knew. He was a friend to all and will be forever missed by his family and friends.

Sally R. Box, 81, of Burlington, died at 9:51 PM Monday, April 29, 2019, at the Genesis Medical Center East in Davenport.

Born March 30, 1938, in Burlington, she was the daughter of George A. and Dorothy M. Dreher Lewis. On June 13, 1959, she married Edward J. Box in Burlington.

Sally was a homemaker while her children were young. She later became a tax preparer for H&R Block for 28 years until she retired in 2015.

She was a 1956 graduate of Burlington High School

Sally was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, former bowling leagues, Flint Hills Golf League and served on the Golf Advisory Board. When she was a little girl, Sally was named Little Miss. Burlington. She loved to play bridge and go golfing. Most of all, Sally enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Edward; two sons, Michael J. (Marilyn) Box of Burlington, and Mark E. (Susan) Box of Ft. Collins, CO; one daughter, Mindy K (Glenn) Spiker of Burlington; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and two on the way; one sister, Patrica Freidman of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one Special Aunt, Marcella “Me” Norling, one daughter, Michele R. Garrett, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Letha L. Alliman, 81, of Burlington died Monday, April 29, 2019 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born September 6, 1937 in Augusta, Iowa she was the daughter of Frank and Mildred (Mullin) Fraser. She married Robert Alliman. They later divorced.
Letha worked for IRC/TRW and Titus Grocery. She later worked as the Assistant Manager for the Super 8 hotel for 23 years. Always working and never slowing down, she continued working in housekeeping for Catfish Bend Casino.
She attended First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ. She loved playing Yahtzee with her sister Marvel, going to the casino, playing cards and fishing. She especially enjoyed her time spent with the Widmer boys and appreciated their company and help in the last few years.
Survivors include her three grandsons; Chase Brewer, Christian Brewer and Cole McKeown; her godson, Caleb Titus of West Burlington; her three very special nephews, Rex Widmer, Rodney Widmer and Roger Widmer and one brother Jerry Fraser of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Leslie Dawn Alliman, three brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 7th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. A short prayer service will be held following the visitation. According to her wishes, cremation will be accorded following the service.

The funeral service for Mr. Bergman will be held at 10:30 Wednesday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Samuel Max Lant, 86, of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Oakwood Estates in Stronghurst, Illinois. He was born May 20, 1932 in Media, Illinois, the son of Samuel G. and Elsie E. Ahlers Lant. In 1972, He married Darlene Coombs. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2009.

Max served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and four Bronze Stars. He then worked as a plumber for Union Local 25 of Rock Island, Illinois for over 40 years, retiring in 1995. Max served as Mayor for the village of Biggsville for many years. He also served on the Biggsville Fire Department and the Biggsville Ambulance Service. He enjoyed camping, fishing, attending tractor shows, and collecting toy tractors. He was a member of the Biggsville American Legion and the Biggsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Debra (Mark) Lumbeck of Oquawka, IL, two sons, Marty (Joni) Lant of Northfield, MN, Jeff (Sarah) Lant of Burlington, IA, nine grandchildren, Jerad (Jamie) Johnson, Jena (Casey) Goff, Tyler (Emily) Lant, Taylor Lant, Zach Lant, Kaitlyn Lant, Todd Lant, Molly Cockrell, and Lucy Cockrell, two sisters, Gladys (Dan) Gulick of Kirkwood, IL, Phyllis Conner of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and one brother, Ivan Lant of Media, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Kathryn Wallace and Carol McGeehon, and one brother, in infancy.

Lois Edith Wallman, 99, of Spanish Fort, Alabama passed away on May 10, 2019. Born on Thanksgiving Day November 27, 1919 in Burlington, Iowa she was the Daughter of Arthur J. Schuholz and Agnes Johnson Schuholz. She married Joseph Jackson Snodgrass, in Burlington, Iowa, on December 27, 1944 he passed away February 7, 1958. September 2, 1972 she married Clifford Wallman of Yarmouth, Iowa who preceded her in death on December 10, 1995.
Mrs. Wallman was a graduate of Chariton High School and received her advanced degree from Stephens College located in Colombia, Missouri. After her college graduation she remained in Colombia, Missouri in the employ of Stephens College as Assistant Bursar in the school’s business office. Mrs. Wallman, later in her career, was a federal employee in both St. Louis, Missouri and in Miami, Florida and then a full time home maker residing in Burlington, Iowa.
Since 1942 she was a member of Messiah Lutheren Church in Burlington, Iowa. She was also a member of Ruth Circle, a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, founded the local Burlington chapter of Parents without Partners and was a volunteer in the church and community over the years.
Survivors include her daughters Lynn Wright of Austin, Texas and Julie Erickson Prall of Hudson, Ohio; a stepdaughter Corrine Roth of Yarmouth, Iowa; a son Joseph Snodgrass of Silver Hills, Alabama; three grandchildren Sinnana Jones, Nichole Wright, Todd Erickson and two great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. Wallman will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18th at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Susanne Smith will officiate. Interment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Dorothy M. Cole of West Burlington died peacefully in her home, Monday morning, May 13, 2019.
Born October 17, 1926 in New London. She was the daughter of John and Hope Van Osdol. She married Harold E. Cole April 10, 1976.
Dorothy was a graduate of BHS. While in high school, she started her career path in medical office work. That led her to 45 years of service with Burlington Hospitals as a medical secretary.
Dorothy loved the Lord and enjoyed worship. She cherished her family and friends. She loved giving of herself to help the needs of others. She showed kindness to all she met and shared her love of chocolate and ice cream.
Survivors include son Tracey (Julie) Barker of San Antonio, Texas; grandson Corey (Elise) Barker of Universal City, Texas; a great-grandson to arrive in July 2019; step-sons, Tom Cole, Eric Barker, and Tim Barker; step-daughter, Brenda Davey; sister, Delores Plummer; brother, John (Mary) Van Osdol; and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; son, Van Barker; step-son, Jimmy Cole; and two sisters, Doris Green and Dolly England.
Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2-4:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. Graveside Service at Memorial Park Cemetery will be Monday, May 20, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Elizabeth Bell will officiate.

Patricia Anne Blume, 84, of Burlington, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born August 28, 1934, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of Ralph Freeman and Inez Evelyn Peden Bell. On October 26, 1960, she married Wayne Alan Blume in Maryville, MO. Wayne passed away on April 13, 2018.

Patricia was a homemaker, worked for an oral surgeon in Omaha, Nebraska and at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute. She owned and operated Wayne’s Roller Land for several years.

She was a graduate of Clarinda High School.

Known as ‘Grandma Pat’ by the ones she loved, Patricia was a fantastic cook, making her mints and family-favorite scalloped corn. She was also a great baker, especially baking themed birthday cakes for her grandkids. She enjoyed the history of her family and life, and told many stories about herself and her upbringing, and held on to several family heirlooms. Being the proud grandmother she was, she loved to brag about her grandkids to anyone who would listen. She was a seamstress, making several outfits, as well as crocheting hats and sweaters. She adored her family above all else, keeping an eye out for everyone on Facebook, and getting everyone together for family picnics. Nothing made her happier than when the family was all together.

Survivors include her daughter, Julie Anne Coleman of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Kathy (Mike) Blume-Hoschek of Burlington; four grandchildren, Heidi (Derek) Boyd, Amy Blume, Garret Coleman, Abbey Coleman; three great-grandchildren, Justin, Austin, and Sydney Boyd; sister-in-law, Ellen Bell; brother-in-law, Wesley Blume of Clarinda, IA; several nieces and nephews; and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

Besides her husband, Patricia was preceded in death by one son, Delbert Joe, her parents, and one brother Ralph Bell.

James “Jim” Pentzel, 49, of Elkhorn, Iowa, formerly of Burlington died 3:34 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Born November 3, 1969 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of Mary Pentzel Lang.
He was a 1989 graduate of Burlington High School.
Jim worked as an automotive technician and most recently as a manager for a hotel in Elkhorn.
He loved to fix cars, attend the races at 34 Raceway, watching NASCAR and the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears. He was very proud of his children and loved his time spent fishing, camping and with his dog Toby.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents.

Randall Ray Moore, 71, of New London, died Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at his home.
The funeral service for Mr. Moore will be 10:00 Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, New London with Rev. David Mixon officiating. The family will receive friends at the chapel beginning at 9:00 until the time of the service. At 1:00 PM there will a graveside service with military rites at the Oquawka Cemetery, Oquawka, Illinois. A memorial has been established for the New London Country Club. Kent E. Reighard, age 59, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away Friday June 7, 2019 at his home. He was born August 23, 1959 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Edith Middleton Reighard. In 1980, he married Susan Jones. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2000. On July 17, 2017, he married Suzanne Jones-Butler. She survives.
Kent was a graduate of Mediapolis High School and Southeastern Community College. He owned and operated Wyatt’s Body & Frame in Burlington for many years. He served as a Boy Scout Leader for many years, and enjoyed gardening, setting up the annual Christmas lights and decorations, and was an avid drag racing fan. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne, mother, Edith Reighard of Burlington, IA, three daughters, Kim (Dave) Thompson and Krystal (Clint) McGaughey, both of Stronghurst, Jacinda (Zach) Hill of Media, IL, one son, Justin (Callie) Reighard of Raritan, IL, nine grandchildren, Morgan, Julian, Kaleb, Colie, Conner, Jaxson, Jenna, Caden, and Xander, one brother, Kory Reighard and one sister, Karla Andries, both of Burlington, three sisters in law, Sharon Jones, Michelle McMichael, and Christine Griffith, and many nieces and nephews.

Bonnie Jean Baldwin, 90, of Burlington, passed away at 6:44 PM Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born December 24, 1928, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harold G. and Edith J. Lindahl Miller. On August 20, 1950, she married Robert C. Penrose. He passed away on September 17, 1967. On March 27, 1976, she married James A. Baldwin in Burlington. He passed away on October 26, 2011.

Bonnie taught elementary school at Perkins & Sunnyside Schools in the Burlington School District; Spirit Lake Elementary & Thomas Jefferson School in Newton, Iowa. She was the owner of the Iowa Store at the Port of Burlington.

She was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School. She received her Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of Iowa.

Bonnie was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Burlington Rotary Club, Hetta Gilbert Auxiliary, Des Moines County Historical Society, Burlington Golf Club, the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders, Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Alpha Theta, former associate member of the Burlington Fine Arts League and former member of the Carthage Lake Club. She was also very active with the Greater Burlington Partnership. She was a big Hawkeye fan and enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, ice fishing, bridge and mah jongg. Aunt B made her Christmas gifts for her six nieces and nephews all by hand. She really put her all into the clubs and organizations that she was a part of.

Survivors include her niece, Cathy (Bruce) Bosley of CO, niece, Annastacia (David) Cowles of Decorah, niece, Chris (Mike) Cowles-Collentine of Burlington, nephew, David (Anita) Cowles of Michigan, niece, Molly Smith of Minnesota, one sister-in-law, Linda Wilson of Illinois; several great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, parents, one sister, Betty M. Cowles, and one nephew, Jamie Cowles.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Bonnie will be 1:00 pm Friday, June 14, 2019, at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Carl Mann officiating.

Milton Keith Foley, 94, of Burlington, died at 7:10 AM Thursday, June 6, 2019, the 75th anniversary of D-Day, at Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born November 22, 1924, in Plymouth, IL, he was the son of James Turner and Nellie Botts Foley. On September 14, 1947, he married Marilyn Joan Hilber in Quincy, IL, enjoying 72 years of marriage.

Keith was Vice President of Yetter Oil Company in Burlington for 32 years.

He graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana.

Mr. Foley served in the Air Force three years during WWII, one year during the Korean war, and eight years in the Air Force Reserve.

He was a member of the Parkside First Baptist Church. Keith enjoyed doing family genealogy and was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society. He was also a member of Friends of the Library and Civic Music. In the 1980’s Keith set up 3 scholarship funds in honor of the Foley/Hilber family. He was a Life Member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. In his retirement Keith’s business card stated: The Foley Castle, Retirement Consultants: Keith: King and Joan: Queen.

Survivors include wife, Jo of Burlington; daughters, Sue (Dwight) Foley Mulch of Burlington, and Kate (Christian) Foley-Beining of Healdsburg, CA; son, Mark (Michelle) Foley of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved siblings, two brothers and two sisters.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Monday, July 1, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

John Arthur Kohrs, 90, of Burlington, passed away at 4:35 AM Friday, June 28, 2019, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington, Iowa.

Born October 26, 1928, he was the son of Arthur Carl Kohrs and Josephine Ellen Finch Kohrs.

John was a Burlington High School graduate. He was active in many sports, chief among them tennis. He was a highly talented musician, focusing on the clarinet and piano. After high school, he graduated from the University of Iowa, and continued on for a higher degree.

He halted his academic career to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. He was in the infantry, later transferred to a M*A*S*H unit to serve the wounded.

After an Honorable Discharge at the end of the Conflict, John taught English and Rhetoric at the University of Iowa before transferring to the Medical Records Department at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from which he retired.

John was an avid scholar of the military. He studied Jane’s military intelligence books and periodicals. He had a special fascination for military aircraft; his favorites were WWII combat planes.

John enjoyed yard work, music, books; watching football and baseball, rooting for his beloved Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include one sister, Joanne Guest of Burlington, and one niece, Lynn Guest of San Francisco, CA.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

The Graveside Committal Service for John will be 1:00 PM Monday, July 8, 2019, at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Red Cross.

Wyvonne Elaine Byers, 70, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 10:35 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2019 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
She was born on April 29, 1949 in LaHarpe the daughter of Loyd L. and Nancy Moore Breiner. On April 29, 1966 she married Ike Lavern Byers. He survives.
Wyvonne enjoyed gardening, painting and crafting. She loved music particularly Elvis. She also enjoyed shopping and going to yard sales. Her greatest love was for her kids, grandkids, and her best friend and husband, Ike.
Survivors include her husband, Ike, three children, Troy Byers of Keokuk, Iowa, Michelle (Kelly) Smith of Albia, Iowa and Ike Byers Jr. of LaHarpe, three grandchildren, Olivia (Derik) Bronson, Isaac Smith and Elijah Smith, one great-grandchild, Isaiah Bronson all of Albia and nine sisters, Dorothy Plank, Pauline Jones and Joy Byers all of LaHarpe, Charlene Wilson, Lucille (Edward) Luton and Deanna Truelove of Blandinsville, Illinois, Patricia (Lewis) Huston of New Boston, Illinois, Marilyn (Pat) Cahill of Burlington and Jo (Don) Frye of Muscatine, Iowa.
Wyvonne was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lloyd “Gene” Breiner and three sisters, Louise Thompson, Thelma Figg and Virginia Kerfoot.

Lyla Jean Stout, 80, of Burlington, passed away at 4:47 PM Thursday, June 27, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born December 27, 1938, in Des Moines, she was the daughter of Velma Martindale. She was raised by her grandparents, John and Anna McKeown. On May 19, 1957, she married Wesley E. Stout in Burlington.

Lyla worked 25 years at Woolworth/Woolco, Scotty’s Restaurant for 13 years and Lincolnville 66 with her husband and son, Chuck.

Lyla was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church for several years where she was Deacon and an Elder. She enjoyed reading and watching wildlife from her deck. Lyla loved making her famous peanut brittle and giving it to her friends. She would always help her friends and neighbors.

Survivors include her husband, Wesley Stout of Burlington, one half-brother, Ed (Betty) Martindale of Havelock, NC, one half-sister, Mary (Marvin) Doty of Grinnell; four grandchildren: Todd Stewart, Jerry Stout, Tanner Stout and Samantha (Dustin) Walljasper; and three great-grandchildren: Axton, Meika and Brantley.

Besides her mother, Lyla was preceded in death by her beloved son, Chuck, half-brother, Harvey Martindale, and grandparents, John and Anna McKeown.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Graveside Committal Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating.

Ruth Janet Rowley of Burlington IA
Ruth was born April 17, 1918 in Knoxville, IL to Eben Swan and Hattie Louise (Peterson) Nelson, the second of 4 daughters. She passed away on June 17, 2019 at Oakview Nursing Home at age 101.

As a student nurse, she met the love of her life, Robert D. Rowley, prior to her graduation in May 1939. Ruth and Robert married Jan. 19, 1940 in Knoxville IL and moved to Iowa City for Robert to finish his M.D. Ruth worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and hospitals in San Diego CA and Galesburg IL while Bob served in WWII. Ruth and Bob returned to Burlington in 1957, when Bob opened his private practice in General Surgery.

Ruth was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Burlington, P.E.O.,and King’s Daughters. Ruth enjoyed attending Burlington Municipal Band concerts, Civic Music shows, SE Iowa Symphony concerts, and touring Broadway productions.

After Bob’s death from ALS in 1978, Ruth volunteered tirelessly for the ALS Society of America, counseling ALS patients. She established the Robert D. Rowley Healthcare Scholarship in his memory. She was awarded the ALS Society of America Volunteer of the Year Award in 1982 and was honored as one of the 9 Who Care by KCRG TV in 1998.

Ruth is survived by her 4 children: Dr. Stephen (Johanna Caslander) Rowley of Bainbridge Island WA, Dr. David (Janet) Rowley of Houston TX, Susan Beth (Michael) Aller of Ft. Collins CO and William (Cynthia) Rowley of Dubuque IA; 8 Grandchildren: Justin and Scott Aller, Kersten Barajas, Caitlin Cook, and Eddie, Erik, Evan, and Serica Rowley; 5 Great-grandchildren: Samuel and Daniel Barajas, Piper, Bodhi and Arbor Aller, in addition to 4 nieces, 1 nephew, and special Rowley family friend, Joyce Pilger.

She is preceded in death by her love, Dr. Robert Ditto Rowley, her parents, her 3 sisters: Bessie Irene Wright Sward, Kathleen ‘Lorraine’ Stephenson and Irma Louise Peterson, and by her dear sister-in-law Kathryn Maxine Rowley.

Patricia Ann “Patti” Ward, 63, of Burlington, died at 3:00 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2019, in Burlington. She fought a courageous battle against cancer, and was surrounded by many loved ones in the comfort of her own home before she passed away.

Born October 8, 1955, she was the daughter of Dale and Marjorie (Marge) Hallgren Westfall. Patti spent the majority of her childhood traveling, calling various Air Force bases home before finally settling in Burlington as home. Patti graduated from Burlington High School in 1973 and later attended Southeastern Community College. She then became a mother of four children from her first marriage with Samuel Kurrle. On May 22, 1993, she married her soul mate Tom Ward in Burlington. From that time on they loved deeply and defined what marriage should look like for their children.

Most of all, she loved her family and spending time and doing various activities with her children and grandchildren. She also was a dedicated care-giver to her mother for many years. Another joy of her’s was her very supportive and close group of friends. Outside of family and friends Patti enjoyed shopping, decorating her home, gardening, baking and cooking, traveling, camping, and her pet basset hounds. Patti was a member of Spring Grove United Methodist Church. She retired from Hy-Vee after 25 years, befriending many along the way.

Survivors include her husband, Tom of Burlington; two daughters, Amber (Jayson) Wulf of Burlington and Lindsey Kurrle of Burlington; two sons, Heath (Stacy) Kurrle of West Burlington and Dustin Kurrle of Elkhart, IA; seven grandchildren: Kyra, Regan, Marlee, Ti’Dale, Rose, Ara, and Lucy; one sister, Mary Dehner of Cheyenne, WY; one brother, Ron (Gina) Westfall of Argyle, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother-in-law, Randy.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Patti will be 10:00 AM Monday, July 8, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Sara “Jan” Garza officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

Helen K. Yaeger, 86, of Burlington died Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born December 7, 1932 she was the daughter of Roy and Clara (Luthy) Paulus. She married Raymond “Ray” Yaeger. He preceded her in death.
Helen worked for IRC/TRW and was a homemaker. She spent most of her time working at Yaeger Marina.
She was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include her son, Dan Yaeger of Burlington; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and Khloe “Buttercup” her pet Shih Tzu.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Duke Paulus, one sister Ruthie Spicer and sister-in-law Marie Paulus.
The memorial visitation for Mrs. Yaeger will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 5th in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
