Dorothy Irene Long, 97, of Burlington, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Burlington Care Center in Burlington, Iowa.
Born December 13, 1921 in Burnside, IL, she was the daughter of Adam and Pauline Weinreich. On October 16, 1948 she married Robert Long. He died October 8, 1990.
Mrs. Long was a member of the West Burlington United Methodist Church for almost 60 years. She taught children Sunday school and enjoyed other church work.
Her husband was in the United States Army for 23 years. She spent 16 of those years with their three children traveling with him to Vienna, Austria, Japan, and different states.
She worked 21 years at IRC-TRW. She was a Brownie Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, gardening, and embroidery.
Survivors include two daughters, Melinda (Gary) Smith of Burlington, IA and Kathy (Larry) Moore of Beulah, CO; one son, Gary (Ann) Long of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, a great-grandson and two nephews.
The funeral service for Mrs. Long will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9th at Lunning Chapel. Reverend Steven Parker and Reverend Elizabeth Bell will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m. at West Burlington United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, July 8th at Lunning Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for West Burlington United Methodist Church.


Philip LeRoy “Farfie” Bartleson
, 87, of Burlington died Sunday, June 30, 2019 at his home at Bickford Cottage.
Born September 17, 1931 in Forest City, Iowa he was the son of Harold and Caroline (Kristensen) Bartleson. He married Jewell “Julie” Buchanan on November 18, 1967 in Oquawka, Illinois.
Farfie was a 1954 graduate of Iowa State University. He served as a Captain in the Air Force. He worked as an electrical engineer for Sherm Smith and later for Murray Ironworks. He then began working for Mayo Clinic in the technology department until his retirement in April of 1997.
He was a member of First Congregational Church. He was very active with Travelogue and the Burlington Kiwanis Club. He was the driving force behind the beginning of the pictures with Santa and volunteered for many years at the pancake breakfast and for the free car seat checkups.
Farfie loved photography, traveling, camping, running in marathons and watching his favorite teams the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins.
He is survived by his loving family.
According to his wishes, his body has been donated to the Mayo Clinic Bequest Program.
The memorial funeral service for Farfie will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 10th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. James Francisco will officiate. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Mallory Cemetery, rural Wapello.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the Bickford Cottage of Burlington, Great River Hospice or the First Congregational Church.

Virginia Carlson, 93, of West Burlington, died at 8:35 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2019 at Great River Klein Center, where she resided.
Born January 29, 1926 in Galesburg, Michigan, she was the daughter of John David and Inez Esther (Black) Beck. She married Donald Jay Carlson August 27, 1955 in Denver, Colorado. He died May 28, 2015.
Virginia was a homemaker. She and Don were charter members of Westlake Christian Church- Disciples of Christ, Laurie, Missouri.
Survivors include three sons, David (Marcia) Carlson of Burlington, Jeffrey (Pam) Carlson and Russell (Lucretia) Carlson both of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Hines of Michigan and Verla Kohrman of Colorado; and one brother Wilbur Beck of Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one granddaughter, Carrie (Carlson) Ward; one sister, Naomi Tolf and one brother, Walter Beck.
There will be a memorial reception for Mrs. Carlson at Great River Klein Center 1-3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 13th and a memorial service at Westlake Christian Church- Disciples of Christ in Laurie, Missouri at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14th. Inurnment will be in Garber Memorial Cemetery in Laurie, Missouri.

Jean Koehler, 88, of Burlington, died at 4:30 pm Thursday, July 4, 2019.

Born May 6, 1931, in Bloomfield, IA, she was the daughter of Levi and Ruth Christy Chadwick. On March 22, 1953, she married Harry James Koehler in Burlington, Iowa. He passed October 3, 1991.

Jean worked for Sylvania for 20 years, Lehigh Leopold for 20 years, and Daisiannas for 10 years.

Jean was a member of St. Francis Auxiliary, YWCA, Church Circle and Moose. She loved ceramics, woodcarving, painting, making bird pins and gardening. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and repairing just about anything.

Survivors include her son, James (Becky) Koehler of Burlington; daughter, Patti (Steve) Koehler Sorensen of Bettendorf, IA; six grandchildren; five great-grandchidlren and one on the way; two sisters, Joyce Pence of Bloomfield, IA and Joann Hunter of Seymour, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Martin S. Chadwick, Carl Chadwick, Robert Chadwick and John Chadwick, five sisters, Doris Spurgeon, Mary Lee Lyons, Judith Chadwick, Jeanette Chadwick, and Alice Harden.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Jean will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Pastor David Yonker and Reverend Brooke Anthony officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the fellowship hall at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the burial.

Memorials have been established for the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Burlington Care Center.

Sharon Kaye Wolkenhauer, 73, of Burlington, passed away at 4:53 AM Thursday, July 4, 2019, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 15, 1946, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Daniel and Norma French. On March 23, 1962, she married Jerry Keith Wolkenhauer in Burlington.

She was a homemaker as well as a cook at Hope Haven.

Sharon enjoyed fishing, Diet Mountain Dew in a can, collecting snowman memorabilia and feeding the birds. She loved her grandchildren and gardening; she was known for having a green thumb.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry of Burlington, one daughter, Tammy (Steve) Ives of Hopper, IL, three sons, Derek (Kelly) Wolkenhauer of West Burlington, Dustin Wolkenhauer and Brent Wolkenhauer both of Burlington; ten grandchildren: Allison, Jeremiah, Siarra, Stefan, Braylin, Brooke, Taylor, Madison, Jessica and Hope and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Sharon was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia, and one grandson, Tyler.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Sharon will be 10:00 AM Friday, July 12, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Dave Pluster officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Mr. Ronald D. Van Niewaal, 84, of Burlington, IA, formerly of Lomax, IL died at 1:06pm Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.
He was born Oct. 25, 1934 in Pella, IA, the son of Fredrick J. and Icyle LaVeta Smith Van Niewaal. On August 24, 1957 he married Patricia A. Hartley in Pella.
Mr. Van Niewaal graduated from the Pella, IA High School and served in the US Navy from 1951 – 1954. He was a licensed plumber and began working with his father and later continued on his own. He was a member of the Union Local 63, Peoria, Il. He was also a member of the Lomax Haunted House Boys club.
Surviving are his wife, five children, Vikki Bowers of Lomax, Randy (Chi) Van Niewaal of Burlington, Rod (Jeannie) Van Niewaal of Gulfport, IL, Ronnie Walker of Fort Madison, IA and Melissa Walker of Fort Madison, 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and 1 nephew.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda and his half-brother.

Norma Jean Perron, 87, of Burlington, passed away at 8:57 AM Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born December 6, 1931, Iowa, she was the daughter of Raymond D. and Martha “Mattie” Johnson Malcom. On January 17, 1951, she married Charles Robert “Bob” Perron in Oakville, IA. Bob passed away on May 17, 2018.

Norma worked retail at JC Pennys.

She was a 1949 graduate of Oakville High.

Norma enjoyed fishing with her good friend Nell, socializing, dancing, playing cards and bingo. She loved traveling, especially to Branson. Norma was on the Casewives bowling team and several mixed leagues.

Survivors include four daughters, Loretta (Marc Olson) McDaniels, Rae Nebergall, Kim Peterson and Roberta “Robbie” (Chuck) Timmerman all of Burlington; eight grandchildren: Kelly Corwin-Curry, Jamie Corwin, Jennifer Corwin-Hall, Andy “Neb” Nebergall, Josh Peterson, Robert Peterson, Jeremy (Ginny) Timmerman and Cassidy Timmerman; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne (Mary) Malcom of Camanche, IA and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Norma was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters, one son-in-law, Joe Nebergall, and two grandsons, C.J. Timmerman and Josh Hall.

Family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Miriam Dorlee Verdow Heller, 82, of Burlington, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at her home.

Born July 4, 1937, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Paul and Leola Kemp Verdow. She was a graduate of Burlington Community High School. In 1956 she married Max Heller in Burlington. He died October 29, 1960.

Survivors include her children, Paul Heller of Boulder, CO, and Kathy Heller Boyd and her husband Mark of Branson, MO and two grandchildren.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Heller will be 10:00 AM, Monday, July 15, 2019, at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery

Theodosia “Dodie” Oleson, 99, of Burlington, died at 2:19 AM Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born January 3, 1920, in Arcadia, NE, she was the daughter of Guy and Ruth Jenkins Skinner. On October 5, 1938, she married Frank O. Oleson in St. Paul, NE. They spent 75 wonderful years together. He later passed in 2013.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church. Dodie played piano for her church and was a diligent pastor’s wife. She and her husband established three Evangelical Free churches in Iowa and Nebraska. Prior to their ministry, Dodie spent many years as a farm wife. Dodie was a dedicated homemaker, good cook known for her fried chicken, gravy, and pies. Her family and faith were the most important things to her. She opened her heart and her home to not only her immediate family but extended family and friends as well.

Survivors include her first son, Donald F. (Patricia) Oleson of Burlington; their children, Brent Oleson of Marion, Jeff (Jenny) Oleson of Jamestown, NC, Carrie Oleson (Justin Palmer) of Maple City, MI, Sarah Oleson of Jamestown NC, and Amy (Sergio) Gomez of Omaha NE, Erin Oleson of Burlington, Kevin Oleson (Annie Goble) of Burlington, Katie (Connor) Hoelzen of Danville; her second son, David G. (Christine) Oleson of West Burlington; and their children, Kenneth Oleson of Burlington, Ryan Oleson of Burlington, Micah (Keli) Oleson of Burlington, Heather Oleson (Lance Summers) of Burlington, and Lindsay (Christopher) Ramirez of Granite Falls, NC; 27 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dixie Deitchler of Glenwood, IA.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Alonzo Skinner, Don Skinner, and Gerald Skinner; and two sisters Betty Dyke and Helen Reafling.

Donna Mae Walters, 85, of Mediapolis, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 1, 1934, in Northfield, IA, she was the daughter of Clarence Isaac and Merle Elizabeth Luckenbill Kinsinger. On September 13, 1971, she married Donald Merlin Walters in Burlington. Donna and Don’s love for each other was a shining example of true love. Don passed away on April 22, 2012.

She graduated from Huron High School in 1953. She then went on to attend the Burlington Beauty Academy.

Donna was a beautician for several years.

She was a member of West Burlington Christian Church and was very dedicated to her faith. In her younger years, Donna loved playing basketball for the Huron Maidens. Everyone felt Donna’s hospitality when they were around her. She was incredibly kind, selfless, loving and enjoyed life. Donna liked to decorate with old antiques, was a master of preparing comfort foods and loved playing cards with friends and family. She also enjoyed sitting on the porch waiting for her paw-friend Willy. She loved flowers, especially pansies in the Spring.

Survivors include two sons, Jim (Jeff Keim) Walters of Chicago, IL and Jeff (Nan) Walters of Burlington; and one daughter, Julie McKee of Clarkston, WA; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda (Gary) Lord of Mediapolis; several nieces and nephews; and one special great-niece, Hadley.

Special thanks to her caretaker, Jean, and her niece Amanda.

Besides her husband, Donna was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel and Carla, one son-in-law, Rodney, and one nephew, Heath.

Richard “Dick” Knopp, 96, of Burlington, died at 12:02 PM Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born June 6, 1923, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of David and Ruth L. Friberg Knopp. On August 5, 1950, he married Phyllis A. Kelso in Burlington.

Dick worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1978.

He graduated Burlington High School in 1941.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II from 1943 until 1946.

Dick attended SS John & Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Association of Federal Retired Employees and AARP. He enjoyed yard work, fishing, hunting, and bowling. He was an all around great neighbor, known as “Mr. Fix It”. He also enjoyed keeping up with current events.

Survivors include his wife; several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Robert, Ned, and Joseph and one niece, Joani K. Sturms of Keokuk.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Prugh’s Chapel; 317 N 4th Street.

The funeral service for Mr. Knopp will be 11:00 AM Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Prugh’s Chapel; 317 N 4th Street with Rev. Fr. Dan Dorau officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Divine Mercy Parish – St. Paul’s Catholic Church Fellowship Hall following the burial.

Kathryn Lucille Walker Miller, 91, of Burlington passed away August 5, 2019 at Brookdale Senior Living in Memphis, TN,

Born March 13, 1928 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Richard Bates and Catharine Dorothea Wegener Walker. On Jan 19, 1947 she married Robert Henry Miller in Middletown. He passed away April 21, 1996.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and seamstress for years in Danville and then Burlington. She was a 1946 graduate of Sperry High School and was All-State in basketball for two years. She was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a member of the Burlington Moose Club for many years. As an avid traveler, she visited many places in the U.S with her friends. Hobbies included making dolls, collecting glassware and sewing for her family and others.

Survivors include two sons, Gary R. Miller of Whitefish, MT and Charles M. Miller of Poway, CA; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and one sister and grandson Joshua Miller.

Visitation for Kathryn will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM with the family to receive friends Sunday, August 11, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Burial will be at 11:00 AM on August 12, 2019 in Keokuk National Cemetery with her husband.

Dan Elmer Scott, 90, of Burlington, passed away at 8:45 AM Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 30, 1928, in Rome, IA, he was the son of Walter J. and Bertha Sophia Wilhelmina Danielson Scott. On June 27, 1950, he married Betty Lee Blake at the Methodist Church in Mediapolis.

Dan owned and operated Scott Insurance Agency and Ebert’s Supply Company.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and of Elks Lodge #84 and Lions Club. Dan was a kind, loving, ambitious man who was always willing to help anyone who needed it. He always took care of his parents and family. Dan grew up on a family farm, north of Rome, where he learned how to work with animals and developed his diligent work ethic. He carried that into all of the businesses that he owned. He loved taking vacations with his family every summer.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War from November 7, 1952 until August 20, 1954.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Scott of Burlington; one son, Mark (Deb) Scott of Middletown, two daughters, Mary Ellen (Jerry) Stamp of Iowa City and Diane Lee (Ravi) Scott of Saint Louis, MO; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Dan was preceded in death by one brother, James Lee Scott, and one sister, Beverly Kaighin.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Dan will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Tammi Wirt officiating. Full Military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in Parish Hall at Grace United Methodist following the service. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Sarah Oriano, 78, died Monday August 5th.
Sarah Lou Francis Oriano was born February 19, 1941, in Bloomfield, IA, to Marietta L. Horn and Austin M. Francis. The family moved to Burlington, IA, and in 1946 they headed to Lomax, IL, where at age five she started first grade because there was no kindergarten. She attended Lomax Elementary and then graduated from Dallas City High School as co-valedictorian in 1958. Sarah participated in music, drama and most scholastic events. In 1958-59 she attended Burlington Junior College.
Sarah married Hugh A. Oriano at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in 1960. She worked at Yetter Oil Company in Burlington until 1969 when she finished her Associate’s degree at Southeastern Community College. She then graduated in 1972 from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL, earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in English with minors in journalism and linguistics. Mrs. Oriano’s teaching career began at Horace Mann Middle School, and after five years she transferred to Burlington Community High School where she served an additional twenty-four years until her retirement in 2001.
Mrs. Oriano loved ballet; musical productions; shopping; collecting Majolica pottery and china; going to lunch with her friends; making “goodies” for her five grandsons; and traveling. With her husband, she traveled internationally throughout Canada, Mexico, and countless domestic destinations as part of his work. The Orianos were “Winter Texans” for thirteen years before Hugh’s death in 2014. After his passing, Sarah sold the family home of 42 years in Burlington when she moved to Riverside, Iowa, to be near her son and his family. For the last several years, she also enjoyed living between her home in Iowa and with her daughter and her family in Texas where she cultivated numerous friends and became known as the “Biggest Little San Antonio’s Spurs Fan.” Sarah was a member of ISEA, NEA, and Blackman Chapter 302 of Eastern Star.
Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, and three of her four sisters: Christi M. Doran, Leslie A. Roberts, and Diana M. Shaw. She is survived by her son, Anthony C. Oriano (Julie Richardson), of Riverside, IA and by her daughter, Dr. Angela Oriano (Robert Bradshaw) of League City, TX. She is also survived by her five grandsons: Nash, Noah, and Nicolas Oriano and Christian and Gabriel Darnall, along with her sister, Mrs. Carolyn Sutton (Howard) of Lomax, IL, brother-in-law Mr. Howard T. Shaw, Dallas City, IL; her children-in-law Larry Darnall, Austin, TX and Denise Headrick Miller, Iowa City, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM with the family to receive friends Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Sarah will be 1:00 PM Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Carman Cemetery.

Yoshiko Fair, 88, passed on August 5, 2019 at Oakville Nursing and Rehabilitation in Burlington, Iowa.
She was born on April 30, 1931 in Tokyo, Japan. She was the middle child of five to Gantaro and Sakako Nito Ishii. She grew up in Japan and met and married Michael F. Fair on December 24, 1952 in Tokyo while he was stationed there during his time in the United States Army. She came to the United States in the fall of 1953.
She became a United States citizen and raised four children in Sharpsburg, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was a very beautiful, caring and kind person; a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a talented seamstress and loved to knit and crochet. Her children were her top priority, and she made all of her their clothes as they grew up, even making prom dresses for her girls in high school. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her friends and family. She was an excellent cook, and was always hosting a dinner, party, or holiday. Yoshiko was also and avid gardener, and a devout Christian who loved Jesus with all her heart. She moved to Iowa to be near her daughter in her old age.
She is survived by three daughters, Susan (Joseph) Krezelak of Seattle, Washington, Sabrina (Paiva) of Burlington, Iowa, Christine (Charles) Seibert of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and one son Michael F. Fair of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to the Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home Crematory.

Wayne Junior Crandall, 85 of Wapello, formerly of rural Oquawka, died at 3:55 p.m. on Monday, August 5, 2019 at Wapello Specialty Care, where he was a resident.
Born February 17, 1934 in Lewistown, MO, he was the son of Audrey and Almina Crandall. He married Geneva M. Miller on January 9, 1954. She died July 3, 1991. He married Helen Wesely on July 31, 1992. She died February 13, 2019.
Wayne worked in appliance and heating/air conditioning maintenance for Brockway, Arnold’s and Fox Appliance.
He was a past member of the Eagle’s Lodge.
Survivors include one daughter, Deb (Ken) Chenoweth of Burlington; three grandchildren, Nicholas (Sara) Chenoweth, Diana Chenoweth both of Burlington, and Jamie Chenoweth of Milan, IL; six great-grandchildren, Brock, Noah, Dylan, Bradie, Carter, and Savanna; two step-sons, Terry (Lisa) Woodyard of Wapello, IA and Sean (David) Woodyard of Chicago, IL; and one brother, Donald Crandall of Stronghurst, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, and one sister in infancy.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Truie Clark Johnson, 65 of Burlington, died at 9:07 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Great River Klein Center.
Born September 29, 1953 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Truie K. and Patricia M. (Pence) Johnson. He married Amy Pohlpeter in December of 1979. They later divorced.
Truie graduated in 1972 from Burlington High School. He worked as a CMM Inspector in the Quality Control Department for J.I. Case Co. for 34 years until his retirement in 2008.
He was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Malta Masonic Lodge #318, A.F. & A.M., and United Auto Workers Local 807. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and being outside enjoying the fresh air.
Survivors include his daughter, Melissa (Nate) Jones of Burlington, IA; granddaughter, Landry; and mother, Patricia Johnson of Burlington, IA.
He was preceded in death by his father, Truie K. Johnson.
The funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 8th at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Tammi Wirt will officiate.

Trudy Jean Gall, 65, Milton, Wisconsin, former long-time resident of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Monday, July 29th at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

The daughter of Leo and Virginia (McCann) Archdale, was born in Peoria, Illinois on September 2, 1953. Trudy attended school in Washington, Illinois where she met the love of her life, Rickey Gall. They were married November 30, 1970 in Peoria, Illinois. After Rick got out of the service, Rick and Trudy relocated to Biggsville, Illinois where they made their home and raised their children.

Trudy enjoyed staying at home raising her kids and babysitting many others. She was a caretaker for a dear elderly couple, waitressed at Country Fun, was a medical receptionist for Dr. Lindo and later for Eagle View Medical Center. Her greatest joy was spending time with friends and family.

Surviving are husband Rickey Gall; children: Karen Gall (wife of the late Chad Gall), Heather (Mike) Swisher, L.D. Gall, Rudi (Aaron) Cole, Hollie (John) Allen, and Karlie Hedden;
grandchildren: Rebecca Gall, Kaitlyn Lant, Todd Lant, Kylie Cole, Hunter Shrader, Gavin Cole, Alyson Gall, Annie Cole, Riley Shrader, Sadie Gall, Logan Boughton, Nova McIntyre; sisters Judy Bailey, Jackie Sherman, Angie Slater and father in law Dale Gall.

David Lee Robinson, 72, of Burlington, passed away at 3:30 AM Saturday, August 3, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born February 17, 1947, in Keokuk, he was the son of Howard Burrell and Vivienne Robinson On August 25, 1973, he married Linda Salek in Burlington.

David worked as a welder at JI Case, in the Appliance Department at Lowes, sales at Montgomery Wards and Zales Jewelry.

He was a 1965 graduate of Keokuk High School.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War.

David was a member of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and playing chess. David loved all of his kids and family.

Survivors include his mother, Vivienne (Elder Fred Starling) of Burlington, wife, Linda Robinson of Burlington; three daughters, Rea Robinson of Schaumburg, IL, Elisha Robinson of Spring, TX and Tracie (Troy) Currie of Des Moines, three sons, David Lee (Alice) Robinson, Jr. of Des Moines, David Earl Robinson of Milwaukee, WI and Brandon Robinson of Huston, TX; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; one aunt, MarScine Brown of Burlington and many cousins.

David was preceded in death by his father.

Carolyn Sue Larmay, 79, of Burlington, died at 12:33 p.m. Sunday, August 11, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born October 3, 1939 in Iowa City, IA, she was the daughter of Albert and Esther (Hannagan) Trueper. She married John Frederick Larmay on November 10, 2001 in Hollywood, FL. He died October 24, 2002.
She worked as a homemaker.
Carolyn was a member of Heritage Baptist Church.
She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, board games, puzzles, gardening and loved to read her Bible. She was an animal lover and always looked forward to spring and the renewal and birth it brought. She dedicated her life to her family.
Survivors include five children, Kimberly (Mike) Cipoletto, Dee Dee Larmay, both of Burlington, Christy (Sam) Elsheikh of Davie, FL, Charles (Linda) Freland of Tamarac, FL and Mark Freland of Palm Coast, FL; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends in church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Mrs. Velma R. Whitman, 82, of Burlington, died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, August 11, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.
Born February 5, 1937 in Del Plain, AR, she was the daughter of Afton and Virginia (Galligher) Davis. She married Jerome J. Foley August 10, 1957. They later divorced. She married Harry Stout on April 8, 1974. They later divorced.
She worked at the I.A.A.P. in production and laundry for 20 years.
Velma was a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed shopping, gardening, and was an avid reader. She was a wonderful cook, dog lover, good listener and never knew a stranger. She could always find the perfect gift for everyone.
Survivors include six children, Debbie (Dennis) Dickson of Burlington, Dee Dee Anderson of Longmont, CO, Anne (Dennie) Weaver of Burlington, Francis James Foley of CO, Jeff (Kathy) Foley of Gladstone, IL, and Cheryl (Jason) Perry; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Jimmy Davis of AR, Neva Cochrel of CA, and Donnie Davis of MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, W.C. Davis.

Candace (Candy) Cuthbert-Boyle, 69, of West Burlington, died at 5:08 AM Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington after a courageous eleven year battle with cancer.

Candace was born on July 30, 1949 in Ft. Madison, IA. She was the daughter of Milo and Dorothy Folger Cuthbert.

On January 6, 1996 she married Philip Boyle.

She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1994 with two Bachelor degrees, Psychology and Sociology, where she distinguished herself academically with a 4.0 GPA for 6 years, making the Dean’s list every semester. She was the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, mentored students, and was published in the annual college literary journal. She was an officer in the Student Senate every year and belonged to a variety of clubs and fraternities, too many to list, many of which she presided over in the role as President and other offices.

Candace was employed in a variety of jobs prior to, and during college, including clerical, retail, and manufacturing. Upon graduation she entered the field of social services and served as a Family Therapist and Skill-Development Specialist, providing services to children and their families. She loved her profession and formed bonds with many clients over a career span of twenty years. After her retirement several children she served continued to reach out to her as adults. She was a loving caregiver for most of her life. She was of the Catholic Faith.

She loved gardening and the beauty of the Boyle yard was amazing. She was a huge animal lover and advocate and was known to rescue and take in every stray. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, jigsaw and word puzzles. She enjoyed the pursuit of learning and was an avid reader. Most of all she enjoyed the company of friends and family. She loved to cook and entertain, especially at the camp site.

The joy in her life was her only grandchild, Kaden. He was the love of her life and she glowed in his presence. She often credited him with being her reason to fight for her life.

Survivors include her husband, Philip Boyle, of West Burlington, IA, one son, Brendan Glenn Butts, of Burlington, grandson, Kaden Glenn Butts, and his mother, Danielle Myers of West Burlington; one sister, Ann Gardner, of Enterprise, Oregon; several nieces and nephews, including Dean A. (Elaine) Fuller, Shane Fuller, Renee Adams and her daughter, Kristy, all with whom she shared a very special bond; many great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; several cousins; mother-in- law, Jaunita Boyle of Burlington, and sister-in-law Cecilia (Darrell) Clevidence, of Galesburg, IL; too many special friends to list, and of course, her “baby-girl”, Sassy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Barry Cuthbert, one sister, Gloria Fuller, and special brother-in-law, Robert (Poppsie) Gardner.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Otis Lee Shipley,77, of West Burlington, passed away at 3:25 AM at Great River Hospice House, in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born June 4, 1942, in Lock, OH, he was the son of Maurice Barton and Adra Harrison Shipley. On July 7, 1962, he married Peggy Ann Schwerin in St. Paul’s First United Church of Christ in West Burlington.

Otis was a supervisor over the metal works and tool room and he was a tool and die maker at Champion Spark Plug for 23 years.

He was a 1960 graduate of Burlington High School then attended Southeastern Community College.

Otis was a member of Carthage Lake Club for many years and St. Paul First United Church of Christ. He enjoyed fishing, hunting golfing and could fix anything. Otis loved his children, family, grandchildren and friends. He always said, “I never belonged to a lot of organizations, but spent my life with my children”.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Shipley of West Burlington; three sons: Dan (Dee) Shipley of Burlington and Doug (Cheryl) Shipley and Wade (Laura) Shipley both of West Burlington; six grandchildren: Tyler, Anna (Austin) Kelzer, Emma, Luke, Austin and Samantha; one great-grandchild and the light of his life, Waylon Kelzer; two brothers, Tom (Elaine) Shipley of Des Moines and Jim Shipley of West Burlington; four sisters: Lora Parks of Macomb, Judy (Doug) Coyle of Middletown, Velma (George) Johnson of Burlington and Rhonda (Mike) Miller of West Burlington; many nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Sally Hand; and his life long friend, Dick Garnjobst. After moving to Illinois 20 years ago, he also became acquainted to the Russell family and they became like a second set of brothers to him.

Besides his parents, Otis was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry and Johnny, and two sisters, Carolyn and Nancy.

Donald Ray “Butch” Brent, age 75, of Stronghurst, IL, passed away peacefully with his family on Sunday, August 18th, 2019. He was born in Burlington, IA, at the Burlington Hospital on January 4th, 1944. Don was the son of Forrest Donald Brent and Anna Mary Louise Bielser. He married Beverly JoAnne Morris on July 11th, 1964, at the Methodist Church in Stronghurst, IL.

Don graduated from Union High School in 1962. He worked on the Brent family farm and at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for four years. Don and Beverly enrolled at the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, in 1966 and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration in 1977 from Western Illinois University. Don immensely enjoyed a 28-year career in education at Dallas City High School where he served as a physical education and driver’s education teacher, coach, athletic director, and principal.

Don was an avid outdoorsman, fishing enthusiast, and waterfowl hunter who loved spending time with friends and family in Mother Nature. He also had a passion for athletics and thoroughly enjoyed the friendships made during his competitive high school, college, and slow pitch softball days. When he wasn’t enjoying the great outdoors, Don loved to play cards with his family and friends. Don’s greatest joys were his children and grandchildren who he dedicated his life to ensuring their well-being in all areas of life.

Survivors include his twin sons, Lonnie (Brenda) Brent of Kirkwood, IL, Rodney (Amanda) Brent of Gladstone, IL, one daughter Natalie (Tyler) Blindt of Gladstone, IL; 14 grandchildren – Brandon, Madeline, Mitchell, Jackson, Spencer, Grace, Preston, Logan, Emily, Matthew, Molly, Lucas, Lilly, Sophia; one sister, Donna Olson of Oquawka, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Beverly, grandson, Landon Michael Brent, and a brother-in- law, Nile Olson.

The funeral service for Mr. Brent will be at 2 PM on Sunday, August 25th, at the Stronghurst Christian Church with Rev. Steve Minkler officiating. Suzanne Marie Wood, 57, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Macomb and Nauvoo, Illinois passed away August 5, 2019 at her home.

She was born on December 23, 1961 at St. Joseph Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa the daughter of Tom and Mary McKoon Wood.

Suzanne loved shooting hoops and playing horse with anyone she could talk into it. She also shared a love of Elvis, Bread, Anne Murray and The Carpenters with various other family members,

Heath Allen Smith, 50, of West Burlington died 2:43 a.m. August 19, 2019 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born May 30, 1969 in Tampa, Florida he was the son of Johnny Earl and Florence “Flo” (Grimmett) Smith.
Heath loved everything to do with Broadway musicals. His favorite being, “Hello Dolly”.
He is survived by his mother, Florence “Flo” Smith of West Burlington; two sisters, Stacy (Richard) Duffy of Burnside, Illinois and Rebecca “Becky” Smith of West Burlington; one brother John Smith of West Burlington.
He was preceeded in death by his father and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22nd at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2:00p.m. until the time of service. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
Inurnment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington.

Carol Esther Hill, 79, of Nauvoo, Illinois fell asleep in the Lord at 7:45 a.m. Friday, August 16, 2019 at Maple Grove – Hancock Village in Carthage, Illinois surrounded by her loving family.

Born on October 6, 1939 in Billings, Montana, to Cecil Allen and Myrtle Alice (Sherwood) O’Banion. On August 19, 1959 she married Jake Hill, son of Jacob and Magdalena (Michaelis) Hill, in Billings. He preceded her in death on December 12, 2008.

When she was 3 years old, she, her parents and her brother, Ralph Richard, moved to Seattle, Washington and resided there while her dad worked in the Navy ship yards during World War II for several years and then returned to Billings.

As a youth she trained in tumbling, acrobat, and tap dancing and participated in numerous recitals and competitions. She loved the mountains in Montana and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with her parents and relatives. As a teenager she spent summers working on her aunt and uncle’s ranch. She graduated from Billings Senior High School. She, her parents, and brother joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1950.

In 1968 Jake and Carol built and moved into a new home in Nauvoo. In 1969, Dr. J. LeRoy Kimball, the President of Nauvoo Restoration, Inc. asked her to be the secretary for Nauvoo Restoration, Inc. that began her career with NRI. However, her greatest joys were her sons and their families. She always looked forward to their evening get togethers. She loved to cook for the family.

She had various church positions, that of a teacher, President of Relief Society two times, President of the Young Women two times, Stake Relief Society Counselor, and Seminary teacher.

She retired from NRI in 2003 as Administrative Assistant, Director of the Historic Sites, Director of Conservation, Home and Historic Site Interior Director and Office Manager for NRI.

One of her hobbies was oil painting and participated in art competitions. She became an avid genealogist and found joy in researching family records and attending the Nauvoo Temple.

Survivors include four sons and their families: Rickie Allen (Kathryn) Hill of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Jared Jake (Amy) Hill of Nauvoo, Illinois; Jason Scott (Allison) Hill of Maricopa, Arizona; Jed Aaron Hill of Nauvoo, Illinois; and daughter-in-law Brielle Hill of Nauvoo, Illinois. She is also survived by sister-in-law Martha O’Banion, brother-in-law Adam Hill, and two sisters-in-law Rosie Freeck and Minnie (Jim) Steffan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son: Jeffrey Roy; and brother: Ralph O’Banion.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 23, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois with Bishop Robert Barlow officiating. Burial will follow at the Nauvoo City Cemetery. Carolyn Rae “Moo Moo” Nuss, 85, of Mediapolis, died at 4:25 AM Monday, August 26, 2019, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born April 28, 1934, in Columbia, MO, she was the daughter of Raymond and Josephine Schmidt Audsley. On May 6, 1955, she married Mark David Nuss in Burlington, IA. He passed on December 26, 2009.

Carolyn was a homemaker.

She enjoyed camping, painting, ceramics and drawing. Family time was especially important to her and she loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her two sons, Steve (Sue) Nuss of Burlington and Jeff (Debbie) Nuss of Danville; one daughter, Debra Moore of Sperry; Six granddaughters, Sommer (Chase) Burroughs, Shelbie (James) Doty, Melissa (Josh) Edgington, Jackie Hartweg, Chelsie Mason and Jamie Shilling; two grandsons, Tony Mason and Ryan Nuss; two step-granddaughters, Sarah Lue and Amy Tappendorf; one step-grandson, Chris Tappendorf; twelve great-grandchildren: Jack, Jacob, Finley and Emrey Burroughs, Whitney and Britney Doty, Isaiah, Jordan, Makiah, Beckett and Leighton Edgington, Charlotte Hartweg; two step-great-grandchildren: Noah Lue and Jacob Tappendorf; one brother, Paul Audsley of Lincoln, NE; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Julie Ann Mason; one great-grandson, Jackson Edgington and one sister-in-law Pam Audsley.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Carolyn will be 10:00 AM Friday, August 30, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. Charles Berthold Hanson, 84, of Bellingham, WA, died at 10:10 PM Friday, August 16, 2019, at Peace Health St Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham, Washington.
Born April 10, 1935, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he was the son of Albert Hanson and Emily Halfpap Hanson. He married Norma Cavell on October 6, 1962 in Laurel, IA. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1953 and attended Fort Dodge Junior College for two years. He then attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1957. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1957 to 1960. Chuck worked as a mechanical engineer for the Parsons Company in Newton, IA for 14 years and the J I Case company in Burlington, IA for 23 years along with 6 years as a Consultant Engineer. Through his career he designed construction equipment including backhoes and skid steer loaders. He had 12 patents related to this work.
Chuck was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, Iowa. He and Norma joined in 1975 and in the ensuing years, he served 9 years as a Deacon and 6 years as a Ruling Elder. He was also an active member of a men’s weekly Bible study for many years.
He was a member of the local Toastmasters group and was very interested in working on the genealogy of his family. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren watching and hearing about their sports/school activities and sharing stories. He was a talented gardener and raised delicious green beans, potatoes, tomatoes, asparagus, onions, rhubarb and squash. He also enjoyed reading, trips to the library, sharing about history, learning new skills such as public speaking, oil painting through an enjoyable course at SCC, walking at the high school track and later enjoyed exercise with the local Parkinson’s Support Group which he spoke of often. He was a big fan of the Iowa State Cyclones, Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mary (Greg) Adler of Ferndale, WA and one son, Mark (Lijuan) Hanson of Bellevue, WA; and three grandchildren, Curtis Adler, Keira Hanson, and Lia Hanson. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Nancy Sue Fleming, age 80, of Burlington, died at 9:24 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born September 25, 1938 in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Charles R. and Thelma M. (Sutherland) Chambers.
Nancy graduated from Burlington High School and attended Southeastern Community College. She worked as an electrical designer at G.E. for 28 years until her retirement in 1998 and then later held a private investigator license.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She was known as a master quilter and loved sewing, shopping, snow skiing, boating on the Mississippi River, and traveling. She enjoyed race car driving, winning the Powder Puff race in 1967 at the 34 Raceway.
Survivors include two sons, Mike (Freda) Chambers of Snowflake, AZ and Donnie Goble Jr. of Burlington, IA; four nieces, Pam Luder of West Burlington, IA, Linda Stien of Atkins, IA, Vickie Riche of Bentonville, AR, and Sue Miller of Las Vegas, NV; four nephews, Gary Conor of Las Vegas, NV, Jim Morris of Danville, IA, Rodney Riche, and Chuck Riche, both of AR.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, three sisters, and one nephew, Ronald Chambers.
Visitation for Nancy will be 9:30 a.m. until the time of service, with the family present. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 29th at Lunning Chapel. Paula Kay Clark, age 63, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away Saturday August 24, 2019 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born February 16, 1956 in Milan, Missouri, the daughter of Leonard and Frances Gardner Bunch. On July 1, 1977, she married Robert Clark in Kahoka, Missouri.

Paula was a graduate of Milan High School. She lived in Stronghurst since 1977, and was employed as the Activity Director at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and flowers.

Survivors include her husband, two sons, Westley (Jacque) Clark of Stronghurst, Darick (Brittany) Clark, of Springfield, IL, her mother, Frances Bunch of Milan, MO, and four grandchildren, Kolten, Keller, Audrina, and Vivienne Clark. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Michael Bunch.

Lucinda I. Heater, 76, of Burlington died Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at her home at Burlington Care Center.
Born April 16, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Paul E. and Ethel I. (Pforts) Heater. She married James Hammer April 6, 1964, they later divorced. She them married Tom Edmonds in June of 1985, they later divorced.
Lucy was a nurse, medical aide and then a housekeeper for Danville Care Center until her retirement in 1996.
She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved to make jewelry and pillows out of wash rags. She collected frogs and loved working on the farm with her second husband and meals and time spent with family.
Survivors include two daughters Renee (Damion) Piper of Phoenix, Arizona and Glenna Nordstrom of Burlington; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three brothers, Eugene (Cheryl) Heater of Mt. Pleasant, Ed (Cindy) Heater of New London and Howard (Debbie) Heater of Danville; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
The memorial funeral service for Lucy will be 5:30 p.m. Friday, September 13th at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Dean Graber will officiate. Inurnment will be held at Long Creek Cemetery on Saturday, September 14th. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Mr. Robert H. “Bob” Frank, 93, of Burlington, died at 1:37 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Burlington, IA.
Born February 5, 1926 in Burlington, he was the son of Lewis Sr. and Mathilda (Wagler) Frank. He married Donna Garmoe on November 15, 1952.
Robert was a farmer and worked as a machinist at Beames Welding.
He was a member of Sperry United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and time spent with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Donna Frank of Burlington; five daughters, Karen Duncan of FL, Debbie Boggs of KY, Connie (Craig) Schmidt, Robin Frank both of Burlington, and Michelle (Darin) Hauswirth of Sperry, IA; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Marilyn Anderson of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.
Family will receive friends 1:00-1:45 p.m. Saturday, September 14th at Lunning Chapel, followed by processional to Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, where a graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m.

Jeremy Allen Hoover, age 37 of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away at 10:16 a.m. Tuesday September 10, 2019 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born June 29, 1982 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Billy Charles and Melinda Kay Thomason Hoover.

Jeremy had worked for several years at REC Recycling in Stronghurst. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, music, and especially enjoyed spending time with his son.

Survivors include his son, Dakota Hoover of Stronghurst, his parents, Billy and Melinda Hoover of Stronghurst, one sister, Olivia Hoover of Stronghurst, grandfather, George Vaughn of Mediapolis, Iowa, and grandmother, Dorothy Hoover of Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Bonnie Vaughn and paternal grandfather, Charles Hoover.

Patricia A. “Pat” Schier, 82, of Burlington died 5:45 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2019 at her home.
Born January 15, 1937 in Altamont, Missouri the daughter of Willard and Lydia (Horton) Brown. She married Joseph Schier Sr. on June 11, 1955. He died July 10, 1989.
Pat worked for Vista Bakery. After her retirement she continued to work for Farm King.
She loved being outside sitting on her deck in the hot sun, taking care of her flowers and shopping.
Survivors include her four children; Debbie Cantazaro of Mesa, Arizona, Deanne Schier, Joseph (Tracy) Schier Jr. and Patty Jo (Steve) Hellberg all of Burlington; ten grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother Bill Brown and one grandson T.J. Elmore.

Linda Kay Siefken, 71 of Burlington, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Great River Medical Center.
Born July 21, 1948 in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of LeRoy “Herman” and Marjorie (Lange) Siefken.
She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish- SS John and Paul Catholic Church.
Linda loved dogs and enjoyed spending time with family.
Survivors include one sister, Peggy (Bill) Wirt; one brother, Gary (Peggy) Siefken; three nephews, Andy (Nicolette) Siefken, Matt (Alicia) Siefken, and Joe (Jennifer) Siefken; one niece, Jessica Wirt; four great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 12th at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul Catholic Church. The Very Reverend Father Marty Goetz will be celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Franklin Earl Newsom III, 47, of Dallas, passed away at 5:08 PM Monday, September 2, 2019, in Texas.

Born March 5, 1972, in Columbus, OH, he was the son of Franklin Earl Newsom and Beverly “BJ” Jean Savage Newsom. On July 6, 1991, he married Shawna DeWeber.

Franklin worked as a construction worker and a plumber.

Franklin was a free spirit who enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his father, Franklin Earl (Vicky) Newsom, Jr. of Burlington, mother, Beverly “BJ” Jean Newsom, step-mother, Marjory Ruth Wyatt, wife, Shawna Newsom of Las Vegas, two daughters, Rayana Newsom of Las Vegas and Asia Adams of Columbus, OH; four grandchildren: Brielle, Antonio, Alex and Raiden; three step-brothers, David Ward, Jason Ward and Tony Ward, two step-sisters, Jeanene (Marsha) Wyatt-Richards and Kellie Ward; one uncle, Kevin Newsom, one uncle, Kevin Newsom; six aunts: Carol Newsom-Huston, Sandra Kail, Linda Clum, Sharon Newsom, Beverly Newsom and Diane Newsom; and one nephew, Freedom Mills.

Franklin was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James and Christine Savage, paternal grandparents, Franklin Earl Newson Sr. and Georgeanna Scott-Newsom, one sister, T’an Marie Newsom, one brother, Travis Earl Newsom, and two aunts, Penny Konhler and Gloria Jean McNeil.

James Edgar Wills, 90, of Burlington, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born August 15, 1929 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Horace Edgar and Virginia Lou (Finke) Wills. He married Shirley Ann Bohle October 17, 1954 in Burlington.
James graduated from Burlington High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as PVT 1st Class. He worked as an engineer for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 38 years until his retirement in 1991.
He was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ.
He was a member of Des Moines Lodge #1 A.F. & A.M., Kaaba Shrine Temple, 32° Mason, and the Iowa- Illinois Amateur Radio Club.
He was a Chicago Cubs fan, Minnesota Vikings fan and animal lover, especially his boxers. He loved time spent with family.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wills of Burlington; two daughters, Vicki K. (Jim) Stinemates of West Burlington and Tamra D. Darnall of Burlington; two granddaughters, Bailey Darnall and Whitney (Chris) Beals; one great-granddaughter, Veda Beals; and one brother, Charles Wills of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.

Wayne J. Hartman, 95, passed away on September 8, 2019 surrounded by his family at Great River Hospice House.

Born in Lebanon, IA, on April 11, 1924 he was the son of Charles (Swede) Harold and Evelyn (Ellen) Wire Hartman. He grew up living in his grandparents’ home in Cantril, IA. Later, Wayne and his parents moved to Burlington.

He married the love of his life, Martha Mae Willson on February 9, 1951. They met by chance one day when Martha got off work at Schramms and was waiting for the bus. Friends introduced them, Wayne offered her a ride home and they were inseparable ever since. They has many wonderful years together before Martha was diagnosed with Alzhiemers. Wayne cared for her faithfully until his health no longer allowed him to.

Wayne graduated from BHS and then was drafted to serve in WWII. He served in the Air Force and was stationed in England, France and Germany. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was in the 404th fighter squadron. Upon his return to the U.S., he finished college earning an engineering degree. He was first employed by Burlington Instrument Co. and later the IAAP. He was instrumental in the design of the Iowa Loader. He retired from the IAAP after a 30 year career.

Wayne was a quiet man who devoted his time to his family. He worked hard to provide a great life for his wife and daughters. He loved new inventions and marveled how today’s cars can answer phones and give you direction to anyplace you want to go. Wayne’s mind was still sharp and he loved sharing Air Force stories, reminiscing about teaching his daughters to ride their first bikes an going on family drives. In his spare time he was a master of calligraphy writing. Every birthday card and letter always had his special lettering. He loved new cars, big band music, football, WWII documentaries and most of all his family.

He is survived by three daughters, Vicki (John) Cameron of Shawnee, KS, Nancy Hartman of Olathe, KS and Cammy (Duane) Kelley of Burlington, one brother, Bruce Hartman of Bovey, MN; three grandchildren, Paul Cameron of Leawood, KS, Brynn (Brandon) Brinkman of Gardner, KS and Ruth (Adam) Bennett of Neosho, MO; and two great-grandchildren, Rhett Bennett and arriving soon, Valerie Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and parents.

The family would like to thank Dr. Niehaus, the second floor nurses at Great River Medical Center and especially the Hospice staff. We greatly appreciated your support and care.

Monte Green, 68, of Burlington, died Sunday, September 29, 2019, in Burlington.

Born September 5, 1951, he was the son of Lyle and Myrtle Denning Green.

He worked at Heartland Packaging.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Darrell E. Tarrence, 76, of New London, died Sunday, September 29, 2019 at his home.

John W. McNamee, 89, of Sperry, passed away at 9:15 AM Sunday, September 29, 2019, at the Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Burlington.

Born June 2, 1930, in Iowa, he was the son of Fred and Sarah Bass McNamee. On March 2, 1954, he married Louise H. Siefken at St. Mary’s in Dodgeville, IA.

He was the maintenance manager at LaMont Limited for 35 years before retiring at the age of 79.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War.

John was a member of Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. He was a wonderful woodworker and made a lot of wooden furniture for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was a great father and husband. He always had a dog throughout his life and had a special place in his heart for his dog, Toby. He was a great problem solver and very creative in his problem solving, could fix anything and would teach his kids and grandchildren to fix things. John was truly a self-made man. He also played the organ throughout his adult life, including ten years at church.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Louise H. McNamee of Sperry; four children: Fred McNamee of Rochelle, IL, Cathy (Paul) Ziglar of Danville, John (Rhonda) McNamee, Jr. of Indianapolis, IN and Bob (Jean) McNamee of Wetumka, AL; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Missy.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for John will be 10:00 AM Thursday, October 3, 2019, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father Daniel R. Dorau as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Jacquelyn Louise Stevenson Gittings died in Janesville, Wisconsin on September 12, 2019 after a brief illness.

Born in Burlington on August 30, 1946, she was the eldest child on John Milton and Marian Mae (Roan) Stevenson. Jackie attended the Stronghurst, IL school system and in High School, she was a cheerleader.

In the early 1960’s she married Lyle Gittings of Dallas City, IL. They later divorced.

For more than 40 years, she lived in Janesville, Wisconsin. There she spent more than 20 years working at Mercy Health Assisted Care in Janesville. She enjoyed spending time with friends and she was an avid sports fan, following the Chicago Cubs and the Green Bay Packers.

She is survived by her two sons, John Stevenson Gittings of Dallas City, IL and Michael Owen Gittings of Janesville, WI; one daughter, Julie Lynn Little of Dallas City, IL; one brother, Jay (Shirley) Stevenson of Springfield, IL; 13 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, John Ronald Stevenson, and son, Gary Wayne Gittings.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home on Division Street in Burlington, The Reverend Doctor Joyce Beaulieu will officiate. Burial will be in Carman Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh-Thielen following the burial.

Susan Diane Keith, 68, of Burlington, died at 2:30 AM Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at her home in Burlington under the care of Great River Hospice.

Born March 6, 1951, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Henry Charles and Helen May Gladman Ohlmutz. She married James House in June 1968, they later divorced. On May 26, 1984, she married Terry Lee Keith in Burlington.

She worked in food service at various restaurants including Long John Silvers, Arby’s, Orange Julius and in the kitchen at the Danville Care Center.

Susan was a member of Moose Lodge #579 and the Studebaker Car Club. She enjoyed looking up ancestry, dancing, and karaoke and was a die hard Chicago Cubs fan. She also loved dogs, particularly, dachshunds.

Survivors include husband, Terry of Burlington; daughter, Kathy House of Burlington; step-daughter, Amber (Ryan) Long of Iowa City; two granddaughters Becca Dunlap and Lindsey Jackson, two step-grandchildren, Ava and Aiden; brother, Dennis Ohlmutz of Burlington; sister, Marilyn Gerth of Arizona; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Willie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, David and Larry Ohlmutz, and one daughter, Teresa.

Ashley Crist, 33, of Columbia, MO died Saturday, September 28, 2019.

Born December 9, 1985, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Douglas “Doug” Wayne and Cynthia “Cindi” Ann Albright Crist.

She was a very caring, compassionate and kind mother who loved her children. She was very smart and loved to swim. She liked taking trips to Six Flags, and the Zoo, where she developed a love for animals. Ashley was always looking for animals to save, and even nursing several back to health. She even found and befriended a deer in the field by her childhood home, who would respond to the name Bambi and even got close enough for the deer to eat out of her hand. Ashley had a very special place in her heart for her Aunt Linda, her cousin, Jodi, and her 95 year old Grandma Betty.

Survivors include her parents, Douglas and Cynthia Crist of Burlington; four daughters, Mackenzie, Makayla, Makenna, and Makynleigh; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Frank and Tillie Albright, paternal grandfather, Donald Crist, and one sister, Jessica Crist.

Harold B. Walker, 95, of Burlington, passed away at 9:07 PM Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born October 6, 1923, in Middletown, he was the son of Jay Earl and Laurel Fern Short Walker. On August 4, 1943, he married Nadine Calvin in Danville. Nadine passed away on September 9, 2018.

Harold farmed for 12 years and then worked for General Electric for 20 years.

He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving during the World War II from April 12, 1944 until April 4, 1946.

Harold was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed woodworking, especially birdhouses, and gardening.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Kay (Ervin) Imm of North Liberty; three grandchildren: Jackie, Wendy Imm and Maria (Matt) Diffley; three great-grandchildren: Anna, Kate and Nolan Diffley and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his beloved wife, Harold was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ronald Walker, one sister, Betty Laughlin, and one infant sister, Florence Walker.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Megan Danielle Schultz, 40, of Johnston, IA died at 6:12 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born August 27, 1979 in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of James William Schultz and H. Karen J. (Randall) Bower.
Megan graduated from Union High School in Biggsville, IL and Iowa State University, majoring in Microbiology and Animal Science. She worked as a lead customer service representative for Voya Financial in Des Moines, IA.
She was confirmed and baptized in the Methodist Church.
Megan was a lover of all animals, but held a special place in her heart for cats, especially her cat Lacey. She belonged to the Cat-N-Around Cat Club and was a supporter of the Des Moines County Humane Society. She was kind and welcoming to everyone she met. She remained positive through all of life’s obstacles. She enjoyed many artistic activities, and challenging her mind with puzzles and games. Above all, she loved her family and cherished time spent with them.
Survived by her mother and step-father, Karen and Tim Bower of Fairfield, IA; father, James Schultz of Burlington, IA; sister, Brittany (Nathan) Oakley, and niece Caroline Oakley of Des Moines, IA; two brothers, Aric Bower of Fairfield, IA and Hunter James Schultz of Burlington, IA; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and second cousins; grandfather, Rodney (Lyn) Schultz of Galesburg, IL; and Step-grandfather, Albert Keever of Oquawka, IL.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jacqueline Kuhl, Page and Shirley Randall, and Wayne and Audrey Bower.

Born January 9, 1938, in Moline, IL, she was the daughter of George Graham and Beatrice Nelson Corman.

She was a 1956 graduate of Burlington High School.

Virginia did clerical work for JI Case for 30 years and Burlington School District for 8 years.

She was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church and also attended Riverside Baptist Church. She loved going to garage and yard sales, church functions and was the Historian of West Hill Church. Virginia enjoyed learning about the history of Des Moines County and was a member of Friends of the Depot.

Survivors include her brother, Roger (Dorothy) Corman of Colorado; one nephew, Brian Corman; one niece, Leslie Conley; several cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Janet Louise Stadtlander, 92, of Burlington, died at 9:00 PM Saturday, October 5, 2019, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.

Born January 16, 1927, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ed and Clara M. Bergman Stadtlander.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1944.

Janet started working in October of 1994, for Northwestern Bell where she held several different position before she retired in September 1981. She was in Telephone Pioneers and was the treasurer for many years. It later became the Telecom Pioneers.

She was a member of Community of Christ Church, secretary of the church and Sunday School, for many years. She also belonged to Farm Bureau and RSVP. Janet enjoyed eating out, Civic Music and crocheting scrubbies.

Survivors include her friends from Community of Christ Church and Burlington Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant brother who lived for 28 hours and died in 1922.

The Graveside Committal Service for Ms. Stadtlander will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with High Priest Suzan Standberg officiating. Those wishing to attend the service will meet at the Sunnyside Avenue gate prior to the service for a procession to the gravesite.

John Verle Fenton, 56, of Burlington, passed away at 2:40 PM Sunday, October 6, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City surrounded by family.

Born October 25, 1962, in Burlington, he was the son of Verle L. and Esther Frances Mutchler Fenton. On June 28, 1991, he married Brenda LeDuc in Burlington.

After graduating high school, John completed a four year electrician apprenticeship.

John was a licensed journeyman electrician.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church. John enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, riding his motorcycle and going to flee markets or gun shows. He liked to watch TCM, classic movies, comedies, especially Two and a Half Men, Everybody Loves Raymond and Seinfeld and NASCAR, particularly Kyle Busch. John was an avid listener and participant of KCPS Radio.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Fenton of Burlington; three children, Jessica Davis, John Eric (Shantae) Fenton and Nicole (Nathan) Fritz all of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Jashira, Alexis, Parker, Isaiah, Dawson, Jaylynn, Jasmine and Ava; one brother, Steve (Lisa) Fenton of Burlington, three sisters, Becky (Phil) John, Lorayne Fenton and Dianna Fenton all of Burlington and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Phillip Elmer Rappenecker, 90, of Sperry, Iowa died Monday, October 7, 2019 at the Great River Medical Center.
Born June 15, 1929 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of Edward Charles and Lucy Mae (Springsteen) Rappenecker. Her married Dorothy Stout on February 26, 1949 in Burlington, she died November 5, 2008.
Phil was a dairy farmer for most of his life. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish ~ St. Mary Catholic Church, Dodgeville. He loved gambling, fishing, coon hunting, driving his golf cart around and spending time with his family.
Survivors include three sons; Tom (Laurie) Rappenecker, Bob (Julia) Rappenecker and Kevin (Mary Kay) Rappenecker; four daughters, Luann (Mike) McLaughlin, Cindy (Mike) Walker, Connie Bloom and Jackie (Mitch) Meyers; daughter-in-law Gina Rappenecker; 24 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; one sister Geraldine McCartney of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Rick Rappenecker, one daughter Patty Buttell, son-in-law’s, Bill Buttell and Terry Bloom, four brothers and two sisters.

Lucile Maxine Ebert, 89, formerly of Burlington, died at 12:45 am Thursday, October 3, 2019, at the Marigold Rehab and Health Care Center in Galesburg, IL

Born May 6, 1930, in St. John, KS, she was the daughter of Ray Sherman and Elna May Wear Wilson.

Lucile taught in Missouri for 14 years, in Illinois for 17 years, and at Southeastern Community College for two years. She also worked at the Women’s Abuse Center, Brain Rehab Hospital, and was a foster parents, ministers wife and associate pastor for five years.

She was a 1948 graduate of Langdom High School, Langdom, Kansas; 1953 graduate of Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma receiving her B.S. in Religious Education; 1959 graduate of University of Illinois, Normal, Illinois receiving her B.S. in English Education and a 1979 graduate of University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls receiving her M.S. in English.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she had been active in the church choir, being the church organist, writing for the church paper, calling on the sick and worship leader. She enjoyed Silver Singers, where she played the organ and perform vocals. She also enjoyed writing poetry, needlework, tutoring at Corse Elemetary, walking four miles a day, dancing, reading and crosswords.

Survivors include one daughter, Debra Rae (Michael) Haworth of Burlington; one grandchild, Todd Haworth; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ruth Irene Bromley of Washington, IL; two nieces, Delores and Jeannette, and two nephews, David and Tim.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and one son.

Thomas W. Smith, 79, of Burlington, formerly of Fairfield, IA, died at 9:07 a.m. Thursday, October 10, 2019 at his home.
Born May 5, 1940 in Terre Haute, IN, he was the son of Ernest and Margaret (Fry) Smith. He married Sylvia McClure on February 13, 1960 in Washington, IA.
Tom and Sylvia resided in Fairfield, IA from 1968-2008, and Burlington, IA from 2008- present. Tom worked for Prudential Insurance as an agent for 31 years until his retirement in 1998. Following his retirement, Tom was a part-time bus driver for senior citizens, disabled students, Burlington Care Center, and the Burlington YMCA. Tom never met a stranger. Highlights of his day were hugs from the YMCA program children and his relationships with the residents and staff of Burlington Care Center.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sylvia of Burlington; two daughters, Marcia (David) Carlson and Paula Hull both of Burlington; son, Thomas Smith II of Franklin, IN; five grandchildren, Jay Carlson of Minneapolis, MN, Amy Carlson of Baltimore, MD, Ashley Hull of Chicago, IL, Stephanie Hull of Burlington, IA, and Samuel (Amy) Smith of Dixon, MO, three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Suse Ann (Bryan) Fitzgerald of Dayton, OH.

Sherry K. Knutson, 75, of Burlington, passed away at 6:45 PM Thursday, October 10, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 12, 1944, in Mobile, AL, she was the daughter of Wendell Faye and Betty Jean Sea Bright. On May 12, 1972, she married Theodore Knutson, Jr. in her parents’ home in Disco, IL. She and Theodore were married for 16 years before they divorced.

Sherry worked at Raid Quarries for three years, Wayne Carpenter, an accounting firm, Champion Spark Plug for 42 years and Kohl’s for two years.

She graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1962 then attended Burlington Business School where she graduated in 1963.

Sherry was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed collecting antiques, going to flea markets and antique shows and watching The Food Network, Law and Order, the old Perry Mason shows and dog shows. Sherry and her brother worked on genealogy that has helped them contribute a lot of information to their family books and they would spend all day at the library researching old newspapers. Cecil Alton wrote a book about the Alton family using the information that Sherry collected and turned over.

Survivors include her daughter, Katrina “Katie” Fay Knutson and granddaughter, Amira both of Burlington and one brother, Charles (Sally) Bright of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Patricia Anderson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Light refreshments will be available during the visitation.

Helen Jane Torrance, 87, of Gladstone, Illinois, passed away at 5:34 a.m. Friday October 11, 2019 at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born August 18, 1932 in Colusa, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle Briscoe Russell. On March 21, 1953, she married John Franklin “Frank” Torrance. He preceded her in death on August 6, 2006.

Mrs. Torrance lived in the Gladstone area since 1955. She was a homemaker, and assisted her husband in the operation of the family farm. Besides raising a family, she was the bookkeeper for the farm operations and the local drainage district. For many years, she designed and sewed clothing for the entire family. She raised vegetables in the family garden and enjoyed cooking, ceramics and weaving. She attended the Gladstone United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Jane Torrance of Normal, IL, three sons, Michael (Frances) Torrance of Chillicothe, MO, Russell (Connie Sue) Torrance of Gladstone, IL, Mark (Leanne) Torrance of Biggsville, IL, one daughter in law, Angie Torrance of Avon, IL, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three sisters, Mildred Jones and Louise Link, both of LaHarpe, IL, Donna Bennett of Sperry, IA, and one brother, Robert Russell of LaHarpe, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Ervin Torrance and two brothers, Albert Lea “Pee Wee” Russell and Delmar Russell.

Visitation for Mrs. Torrance will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday October 17, 2019 at the funeral home, with Rev. Howard Ross officiating. Burial will follow in the Raritan Cemetery. Richard Robert “Dick” Fischer, 89, of Burlington, died Monday, October 14, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born February 14, 1930, in Fairfield, IA, he was the son of Robert Farrell and Mildred Louise Hiatt Fischer. On January 30, 1993, he married Elaine Mary McKenzie Gates in Burlington, Iowa.

He was a 1948 graduate of Fairfield High School. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Company I, 35th Infantry Regiment where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Upon his return to Iowa, Dick explored various careers including that of a delivery driver for Curtis Candies which resulted in the development of an insatiable sweet tooth. While he loved the Curtis Candies product, encouragement from a law enforcement acquaintance led him to apply to the newly opened Burlington Airport. To Dick’s great surprise, he was immediately hired and began a long and distinguished airline career with Ozark Airlines, later to become TWA. Many of his friendships began with people who passed through his airport.

Dick was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he had served on various committees and as a trustee. He was also a member of the West Burlington Lions Club. In his younger years, he coached baseball. Dick enjoyed reading, watching Iowa sports, coin collecting and traveling. He also like to attend the Old Thresher’s Reunion every year.

Survivors include wife, Elaine Mary Fischer of Burlington; son, Michael (Evelyn) Fischer of Huntsville, AL; two step-sons, Stephen Jon Gates and Michael Francis (Mary) Gates both of Burlington; two step-daughters, Theresa Rae (Eric) McCrory of Wildwood, MO, and Sandra Sue (Damon) Wick of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren, Jacob, Jon, Joe, and Judy Gates, Alec McCrory, Lauren and Logan Wick, and Joshua Fischer; two great-grandchildren: Aiden Fischer and Samuel Gates; one brother, Ronald (Sue) Fischer of Fairfield, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, Ally Faye Fischer, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Schupick.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Fischer will be 10:00 AM Friday, October 18, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Debra L. Kinney officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held a First Presbyterian Church following the burial.

A memorial has been established for the Lions Club Kidsight USA program.

Judith “Judi” Weinreich, 72, of Burlington, passed away at 8:50 AM Saturday, October 12, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born November 3, 1946, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edwin Carl and Mildred Lucille Eversman Schwenker. On June 7, 1970, she married Kenneth Alan Weinreich in Burlington. He passed away on January 7, 2019.

Survivors include two daughters, Michele (Ron) Willson and Shawna Weinreich both of Burlington; one granddaughter, Merideth Isabelle Willson; three brothers, Terry Schwenker of Cape Coral, FL and Joel (Debbie) Schwenker and Mike (Melissa) Schwenker both of Burlington; two sister-in-laws, Joyce Schwenker of Burlington and Connie Weinreich of Kansas City; 11 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Tom and Randy Schwenker, one sister-in-law, Dori Schwenker, one brother-in-law, Merv Weinreich, and one nephew, Pat Rehm.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 PM, where the family will receive friends Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Shirley Lou Smyth, 92, of Burlington, died at 3:13 PM Saturday, October 12, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 5, 1927, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Milo and Margaret Behne Garrison. On June 6, 1948, she married George Edward Smyth in Burlington. He passed July 27, 2007.

She worked in many different places in Burlington, including the Telephone Co., Sylvania, Antennacraft and Conifer Corp.

She was a member of First Christian Church. She loved family get to-gethers for birthdays and every holiday. She and her husband George loved their model T and car club gatherings. They loved to travel together after their retirement.

Survivors include her son, Jerry (Catherine) Smyth of Omaha, NE; daughter, Cheryl (Kenneth) Rosenbury of Topeka, KS; grandson, James (Joni) Rosenbury and 4 great grandchildren of Fargo, ND; granddaughter, Karen (Alex) Bloemer and 3 great grandchildren of Omaha, NE.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Daniel Floyd Robbins was born on October 1, 1941, in Burlington, Iowa the son of Floyd Earl and Elizabeth (Long) Robbins. On August 5, 1962, Daniel was united in marriage to Norma Bryant in Biggsville, Illinois. He worked for HON Industry for 32 years as a welder. Daniel enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, watching Westerns and was an avid Cubs/Hawkeye fan.

Daniel will be deeply missed by his wife, Norma of Grandview; his children, Daniel DeWayne “Bub” (Michelle) Robbins of Oakville, Robin LuAnn (Leo Jr.) Axtell of Grandview, Angela Jean Robbins and significant other, Tim Hathaway of Grandview, JoAnna Lynn (Mark) Bennett of Wapello and Denise Danielle (Jason) Loose of Blue Grass; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and two nieces, Diana Kay Beall of Blue Springs, Missouri and Sandy Mullens of Monmouth, Illinois.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Johnathan; half-sister, Virginia I. (Robert) Smith and half-brother, Bill Robbins.

Cecile Marie Graber, 95, of Burlington, died at 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Burlington Care Center.
Born September 27, 1924 in Trenton, IA, she was the daughter of John Raymond and Ida May (Schadt) Ridinger. She married Kenneth Wayne Graber on March 21, 1945 in Trenton, IA. He died October 11, 2005.
Cecile was of the Christian faith.
She was a homemaker. She loved cooking, sewing, gardening, flowers and enjoyed music.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Widmer of Wayland, IA and Rebecca (Fred) Barrionuevo of Cedar Falls, IA; one son, Daniel (Betty) Graber of Burlington, IA; one grandson, Todd (Marcia) Widmer of Iowa City, IA; and two great granddaughters, Sadie and Claire.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and son-in-law, Stanley Widmer.
The funeral service for Mrs. Graber will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 21st at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Jim Hughes will officiate. Interment will be in Green Mound Cemetery, Trenton, IA. Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral service, where family will receive friends.

Larry Dean “Dino” Reynolds, 62, of Burlington, passed away at 4:11 PM Sunday, October 13, 2019, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Donnellson.

Born April 28, 1957, in Burlington, he was the son of Cecil Eugene and Marjorie Ann Springsteen Reynolds. On December 9, 1988, he married Kathi Hawk in Mediapolis.

Larry worked as a Draftsman for Ceco Building Systems in Mt. Pleasant over 23 years.

He attended Mediapolis High School. After completing his GED, he graduated the Drafting Program at Hamilton Technical College.

Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, arrow head and rock hunting, playing cards, cooking and drinking beer. He liked to participate in Civil War re-enactments with his wife and family. Larry loved his pet rabbits and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Kathi Reynolds of Burlington; five children, Adrianna (Stryder) Thomas of Burlington, Sarah Long of Mediapolis, Joshua (Amanda Searsen) Long of Keokuk, Justin Long of West Burlington and Stephanie Wilson of Burlington; his mother, Marjorie Ann Reynolds of Sperry; three sisters, Nancy (Jeffrey) Jacobs of Sperry and Debra LeGrand and Sherry (Gary) Schmooke both of Colona, IL, two brothers, Dennis (KC Hall) Reynolds of Myrtle Beach, SC and Walter “Wally” (Michelle) Reynolds of Kingston, IA; and 13 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father and two brothers.

Robert “Bob” Grant Stevenson, 62, of Burlington, died peacefully at his home in Burlington on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.

Born December 5, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of A. Grant and Loretta Margaret (Abel) Stevenson.

Bob was a 1975 graduate of Burlington High School and a graduate of the University of Iowa.

Bob worked as a salesman at Burlington River Terminal until his Dad sold the business. Bob then went to work for ConAgra until his retirement.

Bob was a wonderful son. When his dad was no longer capable of driving himself, Bob would take him out to the farm everyday. Bob was especially dedicated to his Mom, visiting her daily. He was close to his family, nephew and nieces. He was always present at holiday gatherings and family get togethers. Bob had two cats who he loved. Bob was an avid sports fan. He particularly loved the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan. Bob had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time with his loyal friends.

Survivors include his mother; three sisters, Cheryl (Chris) Lienau, Renee (Mike) McCarthy, and Gina (Tom) Ryan; one brother, Tom Stevenson; one nephew and several nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Bob will be Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish – St Paul’s Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Internment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date. Following the Mass, a time of food and fellowship will be held at The Drake.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Divine Mercy Parish.
